Amazing Transformation of a Shelter Pet - The Story of Jimmy. Adopt Rescue Foster

3983 ratings | 1012311 views
http://www.andymathis.com Jimmy is one of the dogs I rescued from Macon Animal Control during their Pardon Week back in November. I adopted him and took in 3 other dogs to foster. I hope this encourages people to consider adopting from a animal shelter or rescue group if they are thinking of opening their heart and home to a pet. If you want to read about the 4 from the beginning, they were introduced on my blog here- http://andymathis.blogspot.com/2011/11/pardoned-pooches.html You'll also find their photos in my flickr photostream- http://www.flickr.com/photos/andymathis 07/01/12- Update. I reported this on my own blog and Facebook page, but I see I didn't update the video. A few days after this video was posted to Youtube, Jimmy developed very severe and unexpected complications from the heartworms he was being treated for. He seemed to be doing well on the outside, but had major issues with his heart and lungs according to his pathology report. When this was uploaded I totally expected him to be around another 10 years not realizing that he would only be here a few more days. I decided to leave his video up. If it encourages someone to adopt, rescue, or foster a shelter pet, he would want that. Please share the video if you have a second- it might help another pet in a similar situation.

He’s beautiful and I’m certain he got a wonderful home. I’ll look for an update. I got my kitty from a Humane Society and love her to pieces. I was told by a worker that she and her brother were somewhat feral and she had to work with them for 5-6 weeks. She’s a beauty and a momma’s girl. Please go to shelters and rescues to find a pet that needs you.

Rip....i wish we all could stay in the same page but everyone is different. We have so many people living in this world why can each family member just helps adopting one dog instead of leave them at shelter stay in their cage no fun, can't be outside. Please let's get together and helping them for a better life.

To everyone... adopting is the best feeling in the world!  We've chosen adopting twice and I guarantee it is so fulfilling to see the transformation of a dog who is 'lost' and given up on life, to wagging its tail again and feeling the love!  They all just want to be loved, and to be with you.  Both of ours were great with our kids and loyal beyond words. The rewards are 100-fold!  So please ... don't shop - adopt!

I would only ever go to an animal shelter to find me a dog. I have had two, both from the same shelter. I knew the nano second I saw each of them I would give them a home. I have by far the best deal. In return for food, water and a bed..... or the couch.... I get unconditional love and loyalty, companionship and they even get taken for walks so I get some good exercise.

I adopted a dog who I finally got to take home last week. He's never been abused, but is under socialized and extremely fearful. After six days here, he finally left his room for the first time yesterday, but now today he's back to hiding, and not touching his dry food. Very afraid of going outside, too - I feel guilty carrying him outside when he's clearly scared, but he refuses to go to the bathroom inside, so I don't know what to do. How long does it take a typical dog like this to adjust? I feel bad that he's spent almost all his time for the past week lying in a corner, doing nothing but being afraid.

Instead of a trembling animal going to be put down, he got his chance to be a happy dog. However briefly this can happen, and whatever illnesses the animals have when they wind up in the shelter - blessings to all the kind folks who say, "Let's take him/her in". Woof!!

can someone tell me what happened to jimmy fur baby dog?
Kristie Stewart (2 years ago)
Dr. Andy Mathis I am so sorry to hear about Jimmy boy. You did everything you could to save him. Jimmy was a handsome fur baby and I just loved Jimmy when I first saw him on your video and the beautiful music playing. I know Jimmy and my Rusty fur baby 18 years old when he passed away from 90 % liver cancer in 2003. He showed no signs of being so sick until one day he started vomiting and we rushed Rusty to the hospital and he was kept overnnight to run a lot of tests on him. As any pet lover knows. It was one of the hardest things we had to endure when he passed away. Thank you for everything you do for animals. And GOD bless you.
Dr. Andy Mathis (2 years ago)
Hi Kristie- he developed two fatal side effects from heartworms- caval syndrome and DIC. Either one is bad enough but two . . . .towards the end of the video where he is playing with Ginger and Daisy. that snippet of video was taped 6 days before he passed away. The complete video was posted on a Wednesday, and he passed away the Sat-Sun of the next weekend.

manthasagittarius1 (2 years ago)
This is the second video of yours now where I see you calmly sitting in the cage space with a timid dog, just sort of "minding your own business" as you acclimate the dog with your presence and share a bit of companionship (and food) without any pressure directly on the animal to interact or accept contact. In the other one you are actually just eating with the dog (as I noticed, with amusement, out of the same type of steel bowl as the dog had). This is very warming to see, and it seems like pure common sense to offer this stage of psychological treatment in the enclosed safe space -- but I've never seen anyone else actually enter the pen or cage and eat with the dog before. Did someone teach you this, or did you just start doing it spontaneously? I would love to hear.

this was amazing, so sorry to read that his life was cut so short. major hugs for that... i was surprised to hear the song as about 2 weeks ago i had sent a similar video of a dog getting out of a shelter to a few friends of mine explaining that it represented how i felt when Jesus rescued me. the joy is unspeakable, and if i had a tail it would never stop wagging! thank you so much for what you do. God bless you.

I have a feral dog. She was living in the woods behind where i work. She was starving and very aggressive only because she had to protect herself no one else would. It took two weeks before she would come near me without snarling. This was in January now she's my little girlfriend. She still has a few issues with strangers and is very protective of me. It took months for her to ried in a car and she still shakes a little at first but after a few miles she's ok. She is very smart and well behaved for the most part. She is sleeping under my desk now. You did a good thing taking that dog my feral dog gives me so much joy.

+newhuskytwenty Your English is excellent! My parents were Italian immigrants who came to Australia in the early 1950s. I was born here. I am ashamed to say that my spoken Italian is terrible but I can understand what is said. In fact I can also understand some Spanish because, in some ways, it is similar to the Calabrian dialect. I thought about adopting another dog to be a companion for my Staffy but she is a very jealous dog and does not like any other dog coming near me. I think she wants me for her daddy and no other dog is allowed near her daddy. My veterinarian said not to adopt a companion dog as she was a "one man dog". I looked at the link and saw all the lovely dogs on offer for adoption in Pamplona. I especially liked this one: http://www.pamplona.es/verPagina.asp?IdPag=1669&Idioma=1 because she looks a little like my dog. I live in a suburb of Australia's second largest city. Most shelters here have a "do not kill" policy but some local municipal dog pounds will put dogs down after 90 days if no one claims them. Here is a shelter close to my home run entirely by volunteers. I make donations to their charity every year: https://www.aaps.org.au/?page_id=2191

+tripsadelica I'm from Spain and we don't have real dingos, only in Australia. I knew where was that name from before to choose the name of that true angel of love, really tender and sweet, as usually all huskies are. Yes, I agree, we can't solve all that injustice by ourselves but if we all adopted one single dog there were not stray dogs. I usually adopt the most beautiful and I feel guilty about the fate of the ugliest but I live in a small city and its shelter doesn't put down many of them. They are kept a lot of time and usually find an owner. Here are the avalaible now, just for curiosity: http://www.pamplona.es/verPagina.asp?idPag=475&idioma=1
tripsadelica (2 years ago)
Thank you for your kind wishes. Personally I find it very difficult to enter an animal shelter because I usually end up wanting to take all the dogs home. I can't bear the thought of a dog suffering. I am very soft in that regard. This is because I know how very deeply a dog loves its master without qualification and to see dogs that have been betrayed by useless owners really infuriates me. Yes, I agree...dogs live far too short lives. I wish that scientists could genetically alter them to live the same time span as a human. When I look at my dog I fear for her. I would do anything to slow her ageing down...but life is the way it is and when a dog dies your heart is always going to be broken. I checked out the picture of Dingo. What a handsome dog he was! I bet he was a very loving dog. Did you know that "Dingo" is the name for my country's wild dog? Dingoes are fascinating creatures. They look like a bit like the Shiba Inu or the Akitas of Japan and they do not bark. Contrary to what the media will tell you they are not dangerous to human beings and if you manage to get a puppy from a Dingo litter they make very good pets. Anyway...best wishes to you once again. I have always found that people who love dogs are the best of our human race.
newhuskytwenty (2 years ago)
+tripsadelica Your dog is a fighter, I hope she will do 18 with all your care. Yes, but even 16 is never enough, they break your heart when they pass away. I adopted him with eight months at the local shelter, exactly the age which had the present when I saw him at the same shelter. It seems there are people who only want puppies. His name was Dingo and is here: http://www.huskycolors.com/white.html
tripsadelica (2 years ago)
+newhuskytwenty Your husky lived for 16 years? That's a wonderful lifespan for a dog that size. You really must have looked after it very well. I salute you! I have a English Staffordshire Terrier X Jack Russell. All the colouring of a Jack but the build and look of a Staffy with longer legs. She is now 13. She has survived cancer ( a sarcoma ) and a popped ACL joint (surgically repaired). I love her with all my life. I hope she makes it to 18. She has a C5 injection every year as well as the heart worm shot. She also has monthly injections of Synovan to prevent arthritis and I give her two capsules of New Zealand Green-lipped mussel extract every night wrapped in a cheese slice. The mussel extract is excellent in preventing muscular inflammation. Oh...she also has a big spoonful of natural yoghurt with AB culture every night as well. I just looked up a picture of your type of dog. Very beautiful creature. I wish you all the best and a long life for your dog. God bless you.

Just subscribed to your channel. Saw one of your videos once before with you eating with a scared dog. It was great that you adopted Jimmy. Even though his time with you wasn't long it was probably the best time in his short life. I can tell by your vidios you must be a great vet. Oh and by the way I thought the song was good.
