How to Create a Holographic Background in Adult Coloring Books

Images in Introduction drawn by Johanna Basford, Hannah Lynn, and Hanna Karlzon in the order of appearance. I decided to experiment with something brand new on camera - a holographic background! Watch and see what happens when using a metallic Prismacolor colored pencil and some Hologram glitter paint! ~~~Products Used in This Video~~~ Secret Garden by Johanna Basford - http://amzn.to/2j49RZh Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils 72- http://amzn.to/2AXgOCp 132- http://amzn.to/2j3n7gV 150- http://amzn.to/2kych2B Staedler pencil not available from Amazon, but you can try: - Koh-i-Noor Progresso Set - http://amzn.to/2kvWyRM - Prismacolor Ebony (12) - http://amzn.to/2B2gDWg Crafter's Choice Paintbrush Set - Get these at Walmart; they are FAR too expensive on Amazon. Hello my name is Hal and I am a disabled vet and sometimes I shake a lot with my hands. So I have these unwanted pen marks with gel pens and it really messes up my picture and I was wondering if there is any tips or tricks you can help me with. I am doing an elephant right now and one of my pens smeared so it's a mess. I tried white out but sometimes it just doesn't work. Please help if you can thanks Hal (USN/RET/DAV)
I like the video except when the artist takes so long doing one thing for thirty minutes. I rather see several techniques in that same time.

Erin, this video came up in my recommendations the other night and I watched it in fascination. On a whim last night I checked my local Wally World and found not only the FolkArt Extreme Glitter paint in Hologram, but also in Gold and in Sequin Black $1.97 ea.. I think I have found my new FAVORITE Art Supply! The Hologram looks great over ANY color; it reflects quite green over the dark colors but it's absolutely beautiful. My favorite though is painted right on the plain paper.. .it's got just a hint of lavender and is simply gorgeous. The GOLD is fabulous plain too.. or over warm colors (skip the Sequin Black, it's just super glossy, but not reflective or glittery ). I'm gonna save a fortune on never having to buy a glitter gel pen again.. LOL!!!
Simple Art for Adults (3 months ago)
I absolutely LOVE these glitter paints, too! I have a bunch of colors, but I think the black and the hologram are my favorite. I believe I also have red, blue, and of course purple... because purple everything. Haha.

Hi Honey! I do all kinds of videos on colored pencils and you can find them on my channel. I don't have that coloring book, unfortunately, and I'm not sure where I would find it. I have a lot planned for the next few weeks, so be sure to stay tuned.

Just started watching yr video..it was FANTASTIC❗❗ Amazing what a little extra effort can do on a page & really enhances it...of course, on yours the pic itself was very very nice but it just really made it unique❗ I like that...tks much once again for the great tutorials, I get sooooo much from them & can't wait to try..ps..where did u happen to get your paint palette??? I did try the link but it took me to the Secret Garden coloring book😵 Could have been something I totally did myself?? Tks again, Cat

Very nice picture ! And by the way...agree or disagree...your videos are very informative and I think, beautiful. Don't ever change, well, not for anyone else, anyway. I do want to watch you grow and improve, so we can too !

I know you say you are not a colorist, but just an amateur. How about an amateur colorist? You are down to earth and very personable. I say, "You're Amazing!" I love your videos and your attitude. Thank you for sharing your time and your style.

I think the video is great. i am a neeb to all the extras when it comes to coloring, I have lots of cheap pens and pencils, would like to make my pages look nice but these coloring pages assume ppl can afford Prisma colored pencils or paints or this thing and that thing. I would love to see a broke persons page.Someone who went with roseart pencils (is what I have) and all the off brand gel pens. i think your pic turned out amazing tho...but is there a way for us who have cheap stuff to make it look similar? ... I have cheap colored pencils and gel pens.. I'm not trying to pity pary but I just don't have that kind of money. Not for Prisma (even tho I lust over the 160 pk) nor anything else any good.

I subbed to your wonderful channel! Love your videos. Honestly, I could never thumbs down anyone's video. You youtubers take so much time, energy and guts to put yourselves out there in front of so many people To help people. How could I thumb down someone for that? They really need to remove that entire idea. Great videos! Learning so much!

I am very glad I found your page. I enjoyed you talking with us as you showed your work. I was wondering if you could tell me who the person was who did the wood paneling that you spoke about her also doing the stainless steel. I couldn't really hear her name or channel. Thank you in advance.

I ordered a cheap set of prismacolors on eBay that came to me from Mexico they came in a plastic case w a see through top I figured they would be like the scholars but I don’t have those I just have regular premiers ..... the silver in that set though OMG its amazing! The pencils are still really pigmented they just aren’t as soft (still not really hard though) I love having more colors to choose from too:)
Sassy Girl (10 months ago)
Ok thanks
Sassy Girl (10 months ago)
Hi would modge podge extreme glitter work the same way
Simple Art for Adults (10 months ago)
Hey, Sassy! I've never used it to be honest, so I can't say for sure. If it dries nice and hard (meaning it doesn't stay sticky when it's dry) then I don't see why not. This is holographic paint, which is why it has the holographic looking background, but you could use just glitter paint or glitter glue, I would assume.
ajwspjs2 (10 months ago)
Love your videos! And, I like that you talk through them. You don't go into personal info that has nothing to do with coloring. Usually, I MUTE videos with music because I like soft instrumentals, and most of the time people have to choose FREE music that's annoying, otherwise they get hit with copyright. I LOVE hearing your opinions. I may not agree with them, but you always explain WHY you have the opinion you have. And, since I'm not the "color-pencil-opinion-police"...it's good. Thank you SO much for taking your time during your videos. I'd rather have them longer than shorter, but again...just an opinion. Keep on posting! I'm slowly making my way through your videos learning as I go. I'm a beginner with colored pencils...so I really like how slow you take things sometimes!!! Take care.
Simple Art for Adults (10 months ago)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :) I do sometimes talk about personal things though... usually in color-and-chat videos I'll talk about random things going on, something funny that happened, etc. I love videos like that... feels like I'm sitting next to a friend hearing about her day while I'm working on my own page. Opinions are always welcomed here. :) I don't agree with all of them, of course, but I do respect them. I just color slow! Haha. I've found that when I really rush things, it's when I make mistakes or when things turn out in a way I didn't expect.
Melissa Long (10 months ago)
Hey Erin! I really love this picture! The way you colored the flowers was really cool...it looks like you added lots of details with gel pens maybe? A video that focused on those types of embellishements would be really great! Keep up the beautiful work 😁
Simple Art for Adults (10 months ago)
Sure! I'd be happy to do some videos on how I embellish with gel pens at some point. :) Thanks for the idea, and thanks for the compliment, too! <3

Reviving a relatively old thread at this point, but rumor has that if you don't have haters you're doing something wrong. Let 'em hate, they probably need to go get f... you get the idea (decided to keep this one PG13 lol). I love and appreciate what you do and I have learned so much from you. Your videos are the first I recommend to people looking to learn tricks and techniques when working with pencils, and other select mediums.
Simple Art for Adults (10 months ago)
LOL! That's funny, and yes, you're right. Unfortunately there are those who, after blocked and comments deleted, continue to make new accounts. Like I've said to others, I'm not sure whether I should be angry that these people won't just let it go or flattered that they spend so much of their time and energy just finding ways to get under my skin. In any event, it's one of my New Year's Resolutions... to not let negativity and whatnot drag me down. <3 Thanks for taking the time to comment. It really does mean a lot!
Amy Anna (10 months ago)
Simple Art for Adults anyone leaving nasty/snarky comments needs blocked and comments deleted. Don’t let it happen on your happy place. I just started watching you and I certainly enjoy your knowledge and nice personality. You don’t ramble? If you do? They have a finger and can make it go fast forward? Lol!🤣Ahhhh! Crazy....you are in charge of your own channel. If you did something really wrong then yeah they can complain. You haven’t done anything wrong except probably taught them something! Lol!🤣🌹♥️💯‼️
Simple Art for Adults (10 months ago)
Thanks, Amy! You're very right! I'm not fretting about them anymore at all. Just letting it be what it is and hoping those who come to my channel to troll or leave nasty/snarky comments find some happiness in their lives. <3

I liked it much better with a white background before you put the silver pencil on it. Have you tried the glitter paint by itself on a white background? I was just wondering how that would look. I use Stickles sometimes, but I think the glitter paint you used would work better on some projects. Thanks for the video!
Art By TessieJo (11 months ago)
I'm glad you shared your experiment! I was always afraid of failure so I didn't use to do that, but it can be fun if I try to loosen up! After your video, I took a huge bottle of holographic glitter and added it to a ton of glue with a little water thinking I could make that work, and I put it all back in the glue bottle. I tried it this morning and only got a few flakes in the sample. I'll try to store it upside down then try it incase the glitter went to the bottom. Maybe the glitter just wouldn't come out of the tip, I don't know. I think I'll try mixing it up then applying it with a brush. I used about a cup of glitter, so much that it made a thick paste. I guess there is no substitute for the paint you used LOL.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Thing is, the paint isn't "holographic" really, and I knew that. It's just a green-ish glitter that reminds me of those hologram stickers we bought back in the 80s and 90s... lol. :) I thought maybe the metallic silver would make the hologram effect pop, and it does to a degree. Much easier to see it in person than on camera. I'm usually a fan of light backgrounds myself, and I prefer soft pastels to anything else. I felt the need to experiment, though, so I did. Haha.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
I have tried it by itself. Most of these dry clear with just the glitter left behind, so it could have been cute if I would have done it alone with several layers of the paint. :D
Melissa Mackey (11 months ago)
That turned out amazing! I never would have thought to do something like that😃
Meredith (11 months ago)
Want to add, some of the glitter paint does have a tint of color to the paint. Not all, but some - orange, yellow, one of the blues, pink and one of the greens all leave a tint of color.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Thank you, Meredith! I do have a green I'll have to be careful of.
Meredith (11 months ago)
LOL thanks! I dab (which is not needed for this particular holo paint, and a couple more), and I use tooth picks a lot when it comes to sparkle/glitter paint. It does take a really long time :( But it dries within minutes. My daughter is in Junior High and rarely has homework. All her classes now use chrome books, she only has one class with a textbook now. Love the outcome of your picture!!!
Meredith (11 months ago)
lol, those tiny little place, it comes in handy for sure! I just keep a tiny little medicine cup here with some in it for easy access lol. Can also use them to wipe fresh paint off a black line (work) when you have an "oops" moment lol... I have a lot of those :P
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Thank you! I totally forgot about toothpicks, too. LOL!
Joan Porter (11 months ago)
I dont care for some people doung these vedios who talk too long about their personal life.. frivolous things and repeating things over and over not related to what they are doing. On the otherrhand ienjoy and appreciate the new ideas people come up with and tbe knowledge of some of the the fine art artists.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Hi Joan! Thank you so much for your honesty and openness in your comment. It means a lot, and when people actually tell us what it is they don't like about our videos, we're in a better position to either improve what we do or help you find something you might like a little better. It's my goal to be relatable - not professional. In other words, I'm just like everyone else. I have a job, a family, kids, health issues, etc. I want the people watching my channel to know they aren't alone, that we all have lives, and that we all work hard to fit what we love into the hustle & bustle - and into our budgets. That's just who I am and what makes this entire venture fun for me. If I had to be professional in every video, I would likely stop making them. Just as there are people who don't like it when we talk about our lives, there are others who do, and they prefer it over a professionally-done video or one with nothing but music in the background. It's absolutely wonderful for you to have a preference, but just keep in mind that everyone you see on YouTube is an individual - just like you - and we're all different. The wonderful thing about YouTube is that if you don't like the way one person does things, you might like the way someone else does them, instead. If you're interested in learning without so much chit-chat, I'd suggest watching Coloring Bliss (Jennifer is WONDERFUL!), Peta Hewitt, Pam Proctor, The Frugal Crafter (though she does a lot of things besides coloring, I've learned a great deal from her) and others. If you just want to watch someone color a page to music and relax, you might try Julie's Passion for Coloring, Chris Cheng, or Shirley XL. Y. Hope this helps, Joan! Happy coloring! <3

Shannon Coppersmith (11 months ago)
I just found you a week ago or so. I love you. I like your style and the way you color. And it’s nice when you chat with us. Thank you for making videos! Oh and I just joined your fb group too! When I don’t like a video I don’t really push thumbs down button. I just kinda skip or ignore it. I can’t find anything in the videos of yours I have seen so far that would make me dislike anything. I don’t know. I think people complain too much. Lol. They take everything so seriously.
Shannon Coppersmith (11 months ago)
Simple Art for Adults wow. Thankfully I didn't watch their video. Haha. Yes exactly. I may love prismacolors and I know other people dislike them. And that is ok. I love that we are all unique and each have our own coloring style and coloring supply preferences too. I absolutely love how this page turned out. It reminds me of my holographic nail polish. Lol. I love the sparkle. Awesome job Erin! Xoxo
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Hi Shannon! I'm so glad you're here and I'm even more excited that you're in the Facebook group! We have so much fun there. The only time I'll ever give someone a thumbs down is because of their attitude. I watched a video earlier this week where someone basically told people they were stupid if they preferred coloring in a certain way with a certain product. That deserved a thumbs down, and I hope others did the same. We're all here to support one another - not make people feel bad for how they choose to relax at the end of the day. In fact, I think that might be the ONLY video I've ever outright disliked. Otherwise, thanks so much! Like I always say, there are 20 or more ColorTubers out there, and we're all unique. If you don't like one, find another you do like! There's no need to watch someone's videos if you don't like their style, you know? I won't take it personally. Haha.
Janet Greaves (11 months ago)
I love the chatty type of videos and those who instruct while explaining their coloring/artistic process. I must say that I do not enjoy the speed-throughs, I don't find that helpful, but that's just me. So, I say chat away as I love it! :)
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
The speed coloring is okay with me in some cases. Like when Peta Hewitt did the background on the grasshopper (such amazing work!), she sped it up in chunks so we didn't have to sit through the entire layer of a color. Then she slowed it down when she changed colors, explained what she was doing, and sped it up again. That's just fine with me. I think speedpaints are fun to watch, too, but ONLY when they aren't considered "tutorials". It's very hard to make a proper tutorial when you're doing everything 4x faster than people would do it at home. :)

I have trouble holing things that are too skinny. Do the funky grips help?
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
They sure can! The little foam pencil grips are like 10/$1 if you have a Dollar Tree or 99-Cent Store nearby. They help tremendously!
Janet Greaves (11 months ago)
You're awesome Erin, and I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm a new subbie :) This is helping me a lot, because some of the Adult coloring books with the very intricate designs are challenging for me visually speaking, as I get headaches. So seeing your technique here, might help a lot! I'm going to try this with my Creative Cats coloring book. One thing I can say about the "thumbs down" there are just some folks who go and thumbs down or give 1-2 Star Reviews (books, for example) just to be unkind. In the publishing world, we call them "Trolls". Just thought I'd throw that in there, so don't worry if you see thumbs down, it could be just some trolls who are just being mean. Keep coloring! :)
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Thanks, Janet! I'm so happy you've subscribed! I really hope the technique helps... I find myself avoiding books if things are too small and intricate, but this can really help. As far as people disliking the videos, that may be true... but I did just wanted to say that if people have complaints, they're welcome to bring them to my attention.
Daryl Lynn (11 months ago)
Are you using something behind that page? When doing groceries I compared wax paper to parchment. Something I can use under my hand. Parchment says it's waterproof. So I'm gonna give it a go for under my hand and under my picture when using gelpens. Do you only use the plastic cutting sheet from dollar tree only? Have you tried parchment?
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
I'm using a silicone cutting mat I got at Dollar Tree and cut to fit the book! It provides a hard surface. Parchment paper might work for you, but be very careful you get the kind that doesn't have any wax or anything added to it. Some do, and some don't. When I'm working with Prismas or "smeary" pencils, I put a sheet of tracing paper under my hand. Otherwise, I'll just use the cutting mat.

The lady I watch for mixed media is Mariam small art. I don't know if she could tell us how not to get ripples. Or maybe the frugal crafter?
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Well, when you're using wet media, you're supposed to use paper designed for wet media and stretch it beforehand. Can't really do that in a coloring book, unfortunately, so we just have to use our wet media sparingly and then let the page dry fully.
Coloring Victory (11 months ago)
That turned out beautiful. I like using the hologram extreme glitter but some of the other colors I have tried have larger flecks of glitter and ends up looking blobbed on. I love your color choices for the flowers. I may have to try that. Watching these videos is helping me get out of my color rut.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Good afternoon! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos - and I 100% agree! The Hologram color is my favorite from that entire Folk Art Extreme Glitter line. I'm now glad I wound up with a giant bottle I couldn't send via USPS. Hehe.
Pamela Miller (11 months ago)
I really enjoy your videos. I really appreciated the prismacolor tutorial on how to blend and layer etc. They are also my favorite. I don't think there is a pencil out there that beats them in color vibrancy. I would like to learn different ways to do backgrounds. Sometimes when u Finnish that background it really takes it up to another level.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Hi Pamela! For me, the simplest way to do a background is with some inexpensive chalk pastels. I'll do a tutorial on it someday when I have more time to dedicate to it.
Daryl Lynn (11 months ago)
I'm gonna date myself but my favorite part of the day is when I had the day off and the kids came home. the 1st question was what sucked about today. And teach me your favorite part of your day. They're grown and gone now and I miss that.🐕
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
What sucked about today? Hmmmm... well, it was one of those days where everything felt like it was at least twice as difficult as it should have been, to start. My favorite part of the day is early in the morning before anyone else wakes up! It's my time for peace, quiet, and of course... COFFEE! Mine will be grown soon, too... it's just crazy how fast they go from infants to adults.

I love watching videos with music. I turn sound off though and either play my own music or turn tv on. This came out cool.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
I do too! I get in different moods for different videos during the day. I watch the ones with music after I put my supplies away and I'm ready to wind down. They relax me. I watch tutorials in the evening hours when I'm done with all my housework and such and I can pay close attention without worrying about the laundry. I watch my color-and-chats in the morning most of the time while I have my coffee. It's just the way I like to do things. Hehe.
Daryl Lynn (11 months ago)
I've seen some people that do mixed media use it and if I m remembering correctly it dries clear and just leaves the sparkle.

Wonderful video, Erin! And your picture is gorgeous! I was looking at similar brushes to those but wasn't sure about them. Might have to get them now, it looks like they give you a lot of control.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
They are very nice brushes! My main gripe about cheap brushes is the bristles falling out or fraying after the first use, but you won't have that with these. They were a bargain, and I will buy them again as needed. While I don't recommend them for fine art, of course, they work very well for something like this.
dcdaydreamer (11 months ago)
Wow! I LOVE this! Simply gorgeous! I’ve been afraid to use paint in my Johanna books but now I’m looking forward to trying this—so thanks for sharing this! I kinda get what you mean about the yellow because the other colors make up a beautiful “cool” palette—but for me the yellow actually carries your eyes around the circle so you don’t miss all the pretty details!😊
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
Thank you! That's what I was trying to do... make something pop a tiny bit. I wasn't sure how I felt until the sparkle went down. I feel like it all came together. :)

Michelle Banaszak Tried your idea and it works great ! Thanks for the simple and effective way to flatten out our buckling paper !👍

They are brave enough to dislike but too chicken to explain which would leave their name.

That's a brilliant idea! For the record, this one went back to flat when it was dry, so no buckling. :) That's the plan - do what I like. However, if there's a common theme and something people don't like, I'd really like to know. We ALL need constructive criticism, and simply leaving a thumbs-down without saying anything isn't constructive. I'm not complaining - I'd just like to know what's making people unhappy so I can address it. :)

I like it when the colorist has a running conversation and kinda talks about technique or medium or just random conversations about other colorists they talk with. I do follow a few that just have music and text and I end up muting them.
Kyralae Bredi (10 months ago)
I'm with you...no music. I do watch a few colorists that have no voice over and music so I just mute the channel and watch the process and color choices. Channels that don't show or post the colors I just pass on by.

Hi, worst of all is where there is music and talking and you can't mute in case there is useful info and most people have their own preferences in music. So my choice woul be no music at all. I do find your tutorials very helpful and informative, thankyou.
Simple Art for Adults (11 months ago)
I sometimes prefer the ones without talking, but because of that music on loop, I also have to mute it. At least put different music in there or something... lol.

WOW! That turned out awesome!! I should send you some of my blingy rhinestones from when I was doing nails for you to glue on a few of the smaller flowers. You should frame that one, Erin, it's stunning!!
Diane Knuckles (11 months ago)
Yeah, I meant for framing it!

I have some stuff like that I got for cardmaking! I'd just be afraid it would make it hard to color the other pages in the book because the stones would create a "bump"... kinda like the Princess and the Pea.

I'm happy to see you doing this video. I have been wanting to get that Holographic Paint and it will be nice to see how it reacts.

It turned out better than I thought it would, but I'm thinking about going in with another coat.

This video loaded yeah 😊 I like the picture, and the yellow is nice.

LOL! Glad this one worked for you! YouTube says the other video is "fixed", so there's nothing more I can do for that one, unfortunately.
