OK, maybe not supermodels, per say, but men began fashion modeling before women did. IceWeirdo (3 years ago)
In French, we still use mannequin alongside of model and modeling is "mannequinat" (pronounced like man-ki-na) in French.

Maybe it should be called the Council of American Fashion Designers
MewWolf5 (3 years ago)
That makes sense that they were originally called mannequins instead of models.  In French the word for model is still "mannequin."

And in the next episode of HowStuffIsSpelled: "per se".

Why does having pins and needles hurt so much?
Basically what it means is that model and marketing will target men even more know which is going to set a new unhealthily skinny beauty ideal for men and eating disorders like annorexia and bulimia will just rise in numbers even more :( I just want us to get away from that Western Beauty Ideal of being way too skinny and bony for all genders and sexes. (And we should get away from gender-specific marketing anyway...)

Men's Fashion Week isn't a new thing... It is new in the US

Don't you find it sexist that female fashion models make so much money than male fashion models. I mean, name me a single super model man?
Tyrone Thomas (3 years ago)
i have a question for you. what's with emotions. everyone has them and everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to them. i have been described as a logical/analytical person and this seems to be a factor in why i cannot really understand complex emotions. i know myself and can tell when something isn't quite right but overall emotions make no sense. they sometimes even cause me to do stupid things. on a side note i think you are awesome.

How do you call out adults on sexist, racist comments without sounding rude?

+BuellStreetBlaster thanks! because we definitely need more of those people!
Raine Sarita Rucker (3 years ago)
I'm pretty sure she did a video on that, though I can't find it now...
Cheeza Rose (3 years ago)
The French word for model is "mannequin" we do you use the word model from time to time but only recently and only if we are refering to "super models" in the american way ! The real word is still "mannequin" the plastic human size displays in clothing shops are also called "mannequin" by the way !
SteelCityFilms (3 years ago)
We get it lol. Men started a lot of these feminine traits but unfortunately they moved to common women things. Gender rolls suck. I wish guys and girls could wear what they want, love who they want, and just be themselves.

Men seemed to be the first everything lol, this might be like a video to make men a little uncomfortable and show that they did certain things.. but there's still male super models now, so.. if that was part of the intent it would only work on silly ignorant people, but still, interesting video. I liked the part about "mannequins" because I suppose that's where the term for the store front mannequins came from.. don't know how they came up with the word though.. doesn't seen to be an etymology on the google definition. Unless that's the french version of the word "manikin" which comes from a dutch word for "man" as in.. mankind, humankind.. not necessarily males.. which is why mannequins are unisex and so is the term.. used for french models today and the store front doll things regardless of gender..

+emilyshmelimy You'd have to see them to know them I think.. same with me and male models and female models.. like.. I got some names like Kate Moss and .. and... okay well there's one so far, but I can't match their faces either, I think she has a "british" gap between her front top teeth (could of went with hillbilly but I didn't) I remember her in an ad for something.. but yea I can't match the faces when I hear the names, maybe because I only hear about them and never see them.. same with anything really.. sport, for people who don't watch many movies there's actors and shit (or if they don't care about remembering the actors) or watch any of that American TV like E and other crap... Okay I just read your second half of your comment then.. and it's pretty much what I just said.. so I probably could of just said "I agree".
emilyshmelimy (3 years ago)
+Gilbert Flowerface the only male model that I could name off the top of my head is Gabriel Aubry and the only reason I know his name is because he dated and had a baby with halle berry. I think there would be some male models whose faces I would recognize but I wouldn't be able to connect a name to the face.

+emilyshmelimy A number of people call the top male models "supermodels" but technicallyyyy.. I'm not sure what makes them super, in the industry they probably aren't classed as "super", partially I'd say because it sounds a bit weird for a male.. sounds a bit female dominated.. that's why you hear terms which are more obviously male, like.. "male model" so you know they aren't a female lol. But we could just bring out the google dictionary.. "A successful fashion model who has reached the status of a celebrity." Plenty of celebrity male models so technically they are supermodels according to that.. but still no where near as many female ones and no where near paid the same but still.. I think they should bring out the plus sized male models lol, that one is a longgg way off. I'd also like them to bring back the 80's and 90's female models before they got super duper skinny.
emilyshmelimy (3 years ago)
there are male super models?
Smiles (3 years ago)
Isn't it kind of common sense that men did mostly everything before women? Not saying it's fair.
Suzanne (3 years ago)
The French word for model (male or female) is actually still mannequin.
Stefan Marinkovic (2 years ago)
+montagnarde1794 In Serbia we call them "Manekeni", which is the same
BlueHypothermicReality (3 years ago)
super interesting, wouldnt it be cool if thats where that word manikin came from? man-ikin...
BlueHypothermicReality (3 years ago)
+E. Regottaz cool, ive only been to Nice, Carcassone and Paris but i have a friend that im pretty sure went to school near there.
BlueHypothermicReality (3 years ago)
+E. Regottaz cool french from where?
Siberius Wolf (3 years ago)
+BlueHypothermicReality Oh crap, right.. I was actually going to tell someone else earlier the same thing you just said lol.
BlueHypothermicReality (3 years ago)
+Gilbert Flowerface weird though im not surprised that there isnt a female version, "man" is often used to signify all huMANs. like in MANkind, humankind or in expressions "men" is used synonymously to people. like "the fate of men" u know that we arent talking about men literally.
Siberius Wolf (3 years ago)
+BlueHypothermicReality Yea google definition etymology is coming up with dutch, so it's weird they didn't come up with a new term for females.. maybe it was just a known and easy word to make unisex even though it's kind of another word for "man" in a weird way.. and the store front mannequins are unisex too.. or manikins.. the google definitions for each are slightly different..
OneManWolfPack (3 years ago)
