Does anyone know the best way to make this effect in procreate?

SHIFT makes things happen! Well done video. I learned so much. Would love it if you could explain the function of "multiply". Also, I have the darnedest time cutting objects out of jpegs in PS. I use my pen tool exclusively because I don't know how to control the magic wand. Do you have a tutorial for that?
Hat off lab (5 months ago)
Really great effect... and so simple!
OUdaveguy (8 months ago)
There are a lot of tutorials on how to achieve this effect on YouTube, but this is the clearest, most concise one I've come across! Great upload and thanks for sharing!

Thankyou Teela!

My text box keeps on becoming the clipping mask instead of the text. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Eleni Kelley (1 year ago)
Is there any way to make the stroke of the top most layer transparent, instead of white? For placing on certain color tshirts?
lady bikinii (1 year ago)
i love this video so much !!!!!
Kristina Stapelfeld (1 year ago)
Great tutorial, Teela! I love the effect, could you explain how to make the drop shadow longer? I tried to use the blend tool on the lined text but it stopped me because of the clipping mask.

What if we want to create a transparent stroke/gap around the letters? (rather than a white stroke that may show on a colored background)?
Igor Margato Vargas (1 year ago)
For that you can use a copy of the text as a mask in the Transparency settings of the hatched shadow. :)
Abby Gust (1 year ago)
How would you create the gap between the letters and the hatching if your type was on a textured background or something that you couldn't color match?
Igor Margato Vargas (1 year ago)
For that you can use a copy of the text as a mask in the Transparency settings of the hatched shadow. :)
Tuan Le (1 year ago)
Can this be done in INDESIGN? if yes do you have a video of it? or can you make one?
Michael Cobbs (1 year ago)
Wonderful tutorial.
Paul Smith (1 year ago)
Hi Thanks for the Video..Could you tell me how you placed those swatches on the Artboard? thanks
Paul Smith (1 year ago)
Thanks  I figured as much but I thought there was a way to drag & drop or something..Thanks
Funkiemunkytootiedo (1 year ago)
If you know the color values that you want to use, just select your rectangle tool and make the squares, then fill them with the colors you will be using. I used to wonder the same thing when I first started using Illustrator.
zeB Conate (1 year ago)
Hello. I was wondering if you can do the Adele 25 font. Thank you
Katherine McBride (2 years ago)
This is great, thank you for taking your time explaining! My only issue is that my slices wont "send to back" I've gone through the tutorial twice and cannot figure it out. Any suggestions?
Teela Cunningham (1 year ago)
If they're on their own layer on top of everything else, that would cause it, so I would check for that :)
Russ stassin (2 years ago)
It says my text is very complex when I try to make it a compound mask, and it only makes one of my letters into the compound mask, the rest of the text is non existent.
Donovan Carter (2 years ago)
Thanks! :-)

Hi, i was wondering how the image with "Hello" on it was made: https://designschool.canva.com/blog/light-and-shadow/ Great tutorial!
Teela Cunningham (2 years ago)
Oooo, that's a good one! It was created in Photoshop with a bunch of nice layer styles, looks like a motion blur and some crafty blending. I'll put it on my list!

Now I know to press shift when using the eye dropper tool so it changes what I want it to change (in this case the stroke, not the fill). Thanks.
Bryan Kayne (2 years ago)
You have no idea how helpful you have been. You're the first (of many) that I can understand and follow as a beginner. Thank you so much! I'll be watching your other videos and subscribing.

Great and clear explanation! Is there any way to have a no-fill text? My gold hatch shows through when I have outlined text and I don't know how to make it not show. Thanks!

Thanks for the lesson. Pretty easy and the quality of the video and audio is great. If you don't mind me asking (as I see you use ScreenFlow)...what size resolution do you record at and what are your export resolution settings from ScreenFlow? They look great. Thanks.
Devin Chaves (2 years ago)
Should have done this in the appearance panel. You could retain editable text with this same look.
XACO TACO (2 years ago)
fantastic tips from all of you. thanks.
Mike Bryan (2 years ago)
+Teela Cunningham (Every-Tuesday) Here's how you do this using the appearance panel: 1. Create a pattern of the gold hatch. The quickest (but not the cleanest) way I've found is to draw a diagonal line, with a 1pt stroke. Color it how you want to, then hit Object --> Pattern --> Make. In the resulting tool box, Select "Brick by Row" from the drop down bar, and enter .1 for the width and the height. This pattern will look ok, but may scale a bit janky. You can always tweak it later. 2. Select your text, go to the Appearance panel. Create a fill that has the Dark Grey color. 3. Then underneath that, create a new fill with the hatch pattern you just made. 4. With the Hatch Pattern fill selected, click the fx button, go to "Distort & Transform" --> Transform. Enter a negative value for the horizontal and a positive value for vertical. I used .05" as an increment. 5. Next create a new stroke in the appearance panel, make it white, set the stroke to an appropriate thickness. 6. Go to the Graphic Styles tab and, with your text selected, open the context menu on the side and select "New Graphic Style" Once you have your graphic style swatch, select it and in the context menu again, go to "Save Graphic Style Library." Presto! Now you have a custom, non-destructive, text-selectable hatched drop shadow effect that you can use on any document wherever you like. Cheers!
Devin Chaves (2 years ago)
+Teela Cunningham (Every-Tuesday) Not the same style, but the techniques are the same here. Have a look at this Ai file. https://www.dropbox.com/s/yzxwrli4copj3yq/Hatched%20Text.ai?dl=0
Teela Cunningham (2 years ago)
+Devin Chaves If there's a way to get this exact kind of hatch effect using just the appearance panel, I'm all ears :)

Awesome Thanks great tut!!
Mary Stoiana (2 years ago)
I need some help if it doesn't bother you. When I hover over the line about to make the blend, the plus doesn't come up but an asterick does. What did I do wrong?
Mary Stoiana (2 years ago)
Appreciate it, I will try that method because the method I was using from this video only works on and off-ly.
Xolcin (2 years ago)
+Mary Stoiana The Blend tool is just one way to create blends. Try this method: Select your two lines with the Selection Tool. Go to Object > Blend > Make. You should see lines appear between the two. Now, go to Object > Blend a second time, and select Blend Options this time, and edit your blend. I like to turn on Preview to see my changes live.
Teela Cunningham (2 years ago)
+Mary Stoiana hmm, i'm really not sure. I've never had that happen before, and I can't seem to replicate it :(

Great tutorial! Although in the original I think the shadow text is larger than the black text. Just a thought, in case someone wants to make it more like the original
GLASSARTZ62 (3 years ago)
Thanks Teela!   Have a great weekend.  Bob
GLASSARTZ62 (3 years ago)
Great video, suppose you wanted the lines going through the front of the letter? I have tried your steps but can't seem to get it to work. Thanks Bob
Teela Cunningham (3 years ago)
+GLASSARTZ62 Ah, I gotcha. For those, you'd use the blend tool, blending together 2 lines that have a small stroke weight and increase the number of steps for your blend (like 100+). Mask it into text like the line gradient tutorial and you'll get closer to that Map type :)
GLASSARTZ62 (3 years ago)
Teela, Yes I'm trying to do lettering this is like the letter treatments on the Sanborn Insurance Map books. This is my email address I can send you a picture or you can tell me how to post one here. Thanks Bob [email protected]
Teela Cunningham (3 years ago)
+GLASSARTZ62 Hey, do you have an example of what you'd like to achieve you can share? Is something like this video what you're looking for? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5qiUJste8E

Jimmy Nichols (3 years ago)
I think the font is Trend that they used for the original piece.
Teela Cunningham (3 years ago)
+Jimmy Nichols I think Brandon nailed it below with Neutraface - Trend is a super close match, but the 'S' is slightly different :)
