Q&A: Moving Cross Country

636 ratings | 8726 views
Hey guys! I want to say hello to you. I've been posting on Instagram for a little while with updates (so check there, if interested) ((Instagram: _marykale)) but decided to sit down in front of the camera to chat a bit about why we left San Diego and chose Chicago. I went ahead and inserted some pictures to bring you guys up to speed a little. I need to film another Q & A where I can touch base on everything else you guys have asked for. Minimalism now,y veganism now, and a few other topics seemed to be the most requested. BUT, of course, leave any other questions down below. And if I wasn't thorough enough on something here, please ask! It's hard to cover everything you have on your mind and not get sidetracked. P.S. Forgive me for the time away! It was really a tough decision though it may have seemed straightforward here. Life is tricky business. Insta: _marykale

Totally know what you mean about feeling like a failure moving back to home state. My husband and I moved from NJ to OR for 10 months. We loved it...at first. Jobs weren't there and the constant drizzle was depressing. We ended up coming back to NJ. What was worse was having to move in with my husband's parents for three months until we could get on our feet again. We stayed in NJ for 7 years and got the moving itch again. This time we moved to NC. The weather was nicer, but hot. It turned out to not be for us, and after two years we moved back to NJ. We've been in our home state for 5 years now. We have a 4-year-old daughter and are probably staying in NJ...at least until retirement, ha like that will ever happen this day in age.

Hi Mary! So glad to see you back on YouTube. I'm loving your glasses, where can I find them? Thanks!

What do you think of Evanston, my husband and I are strongly considering moving to Chicago metro and we are really interested in the area but know many people familiar with the area.
alovetart (10 months ago)
It's beautiful with a lot of educated, friendly family-centric people. Gorgeous homes, large (very old) trees and the lake. Love it
Mony0425 (11 months ago)
Glad to see you back. I saved your channel and kept checking in to see if any activity. I need to link up to your Instagram.

Your video has made me miss Chicago so much! We lived in the South Loop/Museum Park area. I absolutely love Chicago, especially during the holidays. Congratulations on your move!

Welcome back to Chicago!
mbarda (1 year ago)
So great you moved back! I'm in the Gold Coast currently. So much to do and the city is changing so much.
mbarda (1 year ago)
Yes! I have been there a few times and it's so lovely. The piano is what I love most about it.
alovetart (1 year ago)
Have you been to the Argo tea in the gold coast? Where Rush and Wabash split, on that huge median (north of Chestnut)? There's a piano outside, it's beautiful. Makes me love the city 43902843902 over.

It's so much fun! I hadn't done it before. Crazy how many things are out there that you just don't know about.

I'm glad you are back Mary! I remember that you mentioned a book about parenting long time ago. Since you mentioned parenting style in this video, I was wondering what is name of the book? Hugs!
alovetart (1 year ago)
I don't remember mentioning a book but I have mentioned Avital here on YT! The Parenting Junkie. I LOVE her.

Mary, I used to live in s.d. That is my hometown. I never lived downtown. Looks like u lived near the Amtrak station. What communities did u live in, if u don't mind me asking. Old Town had changed after we left. Have u been along the miracle Mile in Chicago?
alovetart (1 year ago)
We moved there and started out in Mission Valley. We bought a house in Otay Ranch but quickly sold it because the burbs just weren't for me. We lived downtown by the marina mostly. Old Town seems the same as it was 8 years ago when we visited. Touristy and cute. We love the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, the MCA (museum of contemporary art) is right there. The lake is close, so much to see.

Welcome back to the Midwest!! And YouTube! I missed you! How odd is it to say that? It's like we're friends. :)
alovetart (1 year ago)
hehe thanks, Jessica! It feels good to be back. I always come to a point when I truly feel like I'm done making videos and I can move on without the thought of trying to film - but then I find it again. Thanks for being here to watch! xo

I really don't know what the future holds! I think I'm going to all the products I've been wearing the past 5 months in the little kit I pull out to do my makeup. I no longer have the malm desk and reuse my favorites. xo

My husband, 8 month old daughter and I just moved from San Diego to Maryland. I definitely know how you feel with moving!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Oh wow! Where are you from originally? I hope you enjoy the fall and winter. Buy the right gear to keep warm! xo
Nemixtli (1 year ago)
My family loves Chicago!! We went there for our honeymoon in May years ago and just last year we took a family trip in December and walked around in the snow, hopping on and off the L and absolutely loved it!!! Took our 4 year old to the indoor fair at Navy Pier and she had a blast! Would love to go back again with her over the summer so she can see the not so cold side of Chicago but it was awesome!!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Oh, that sounds lovely! Navy Pier is a fun place - we don't go enough since it's not right off the el but really should. Glad you enjoyed! xo
Poenut (1 year ago)
Mary!!! *nearly knocks you over with virtual hug* 💖💋💖💋💖 It's SO wonderful to see your beautiful warm smile within the youtube screen again, love 😊❤. I'm so happy that you've made your way back home to Chicago. I think that was where you were ultimately destined to end up after all your travels anyway. It's always been "home" to you. I can relate because the deep Southern country farmland where I grew up will always be home to me. When I dream (literally) of "home", I dream from there. I miss it so much-especially now being stuck in the noisy city (im polar opposite of you lol). Anyhoo...thank you for filling us in! You look lovely and Annabelle has gotten SO BIG!! 🙊💖...so pretty...like her mama 😊
alovetart (1 year ago)
Awwww! Thank youuuuuuu!!! We sure are polar opposite, I would enjoy the middle of nowhere type home for a weekend, only. haha! XOO

Congrats! I've been wanting to visit Chicago for the longest even though I'm in Minnesota. I even interviewed for U of Chicago back in the day. I've been through it never to it. Loved San Diego too when I visited last year
alovetart (1 year ago)
Oh, I hope you visit sometime. It's really beautiful and with so many things to do.

So happy to see a video from you :) I'm so happy to see you back in Chicago. I think people need to grow and move and I'm glad you've lived in different places, I think about that all the time with me in New York. I've only ever been to Chicago once, I want to go back!!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Please do visit, Rachel!!! There's so much to see. And I'd love to know what you think compared to NY. I've only been once when I was a freshman in college - so I know practically nothing about the vibe. xo

I'm so glad to see you back & happy! I've been watching you since you lived in Chicago the first time & you're one of my all-time favorite YTers. You shouldn't regret moving to CA for even a second. Everything happens for a reason & that move made you appreciate Chicago that much more (I guess it's that whole "don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" thing) I'm in CT & getting excited for fall weather too--hopefully next week! <3 :)

i moved from tx to seattle, drove here with no plan and into a hotel. eventually rented a house and found a job. But it is terrible here, everyone is so cruel and horribly racist. The income divide is heartbreaking and im planning on moving in the summer, dont know where yet. Either Chicago, Houston, or somewhere in CA. You made a good choice by not moving to WA. (=
alovetart (1 year ago)
OH man, I haven't heard anything like that about Seattle. We really enjoyed it.
marianne (1 year ago)
Welcome back Mary! So very happy to see you here again and hear your calm voice. I love the way you express yourself and look forward to more videos from you. I have also moved a bit and have enjoyed all the places I've lived. I know exactly what you mean about missing the energy and culture of a big city. I hope you will share more as we get into fall and the holidays.
Nice to see you again! I grew up in Detroit, but have no desire to be back there. We love Chicago.... the whole family are Cubs fans! However, home for us in in northern BC and Vancouver is my most favourite city of all time. I love to visit, but prefer the spreadout roominess of the North. Enjoy all your new adventures and revisiting old favourites1

Yea!!! I never thought to look on any other social media. Just happy to see you are well and safe.

Thank you for shedding such a positive, beautiful light on Chicago. It has flaws - as all major cities do - but Chicago is so special and full of culture and open minded people. I love my city and I'm so thrilled to share this space with you. Welcome home, Mary. 💗💜
Fatty Cakes (1 year ago)
I'm surprised that you'd spend so many years in a city that lacks culture. Curious what you were referring to when you say 'inspired.' Inspired to do what?

Happy to see another video! I'm glad you are feeling back at home. We are going through the same sentiment about moving. Last Aprily husband and I quit our jobs and sold everything in northern California. We have been traveling the U.S., Canada and Europe since. We can go back to where we were or go to Honolulu to where my husband has a job offer. We are deciding right now. Tough choice but we will see what life holds.
Anna Dovey (1 year ago)
Hi, Mary! I missed you! So glad to see a post again. I myself am contemplating a move to another city (only 2 hours away) in NC, regarding job opportunities...and I must say I have many anxieties about taking the leap. That being said, hearing your moving story inspires me. It's nice to hear it's normal to have concerns about moving like that and I think that worry makes us all better prepared. I don't think your living in San Diego (and anywhere for that matter) are any sort of failure. It was simply a part of your life and you have many cherished memories and lessons from your time in those places. I hope to see more posts and I'm going to follow you on instagram! Take care friend and enjoy this new chapter of your life!

Oh my gosh! I was at work when the notification for this video came up and I actually yelled out loud "Oh my gosh, she's back!!!" My co-worker came in to see what the fuss was about. Hahaha. I am SO happy to see a video from you again. I have missed you. Will you continue to make videos? I have missed your talks on minimalism. I wish you well in Chicago! My husband and I live in Northern California but we want to move out of here in about 3 years so we are saving. Thanks for the encouraging words about moving to somewhere new.

Our Summer vacation with our kids was a trip to Chicago. We stayed at the Palmer House downtown, took in museums, sky ledge, architectural tour, parks, arts festival - had an absolutely wonderful time!
insitetrak (1 year ago)
If I had to choose a location other than my hometown of San Francisco, it would be Chicago! It has a special place in my heart so I can totally understand when you mentioned the art scene and diversity. One of my favorite place is Tahoora Sweets on Devon Avenue, the best falooda, I've ever have. Its a rose drink with ice cream! (✿◠‿◠)
Vanessa McFall (1 year ago)
So happy to see a video from you! :) I was just re-watching some of your earlier minimalism videos and your review of the Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up book and had a question: Has minimalism, veganism, moving to Chicago, etc. changed your opinion about having a second child? You mentioned in your KonMari review and a Q&A (in 2015) that you wanted another baby, but was wondering if after changing so much of your lifestyle, if you felt the same? Apologies if that's too personal, just genuinely curious.
Lisa Nelson-Jones (1 year ago)
I also need to add I believe there is a time in our lives we need to stretch our wings and find what pushes us to our limits, but then comes a time we need to be closer to our roots to put down our own roots...it is innate, I believe.
Lisa Nelson-Jones (1 year ago)
What an interesting and awesome life experience! Life is definitely a journey! So happy to see your calming/peaceful self on here!

No one is a failure if they follow their heart. You are one of the bravest people I know. Most people don't have enough courage to move, change, grow etc. You learn from every experience. You are a wonderful, caring, loving person who has the strength to go for it, not just sit on the sidelines and wish. So happy you have decided to move back to Chicago.

We did temporarily consider Paris... hehe
alovetart (1 year ago)
haha! Yes, we did. I was thinking of that when I was practicing for this video but it seemed like it was SO long to begin with. hehe
JoyfulBeauty (1 year ago)
We moved from Las Vegas to Chicago a couple years ago. We now live in the city and it has not been easy. I don't think it is the weather that brings difficulty. We have a one year old child. It is just so difficult to bring a baby that does not know how to walk in the city. To push a stroller around in the crowd and onto the trains is not always an easy task. And not all the train stations are handicap accessible. That part has been extremely difficult for us, and the crowdedness is hard to get used to. Driving is no longer a breeze considering how crowded the neighborhoods could be. I think it's something that I took for granted when I lived on the west side. I wonder if there's is such a thing called homesick. It's like you're just used to the lifestyle that you grew up with, and then that's on the bottom of your heart what you love the most. It's like I moved out there for an adventure, it's completely different and awesome even though it is difficult. I don't regret my decision, but I will forever miss the lifestyle over there.
JoyfulBeauty (1 year ago)
Mary Kale Thank you for not getting offended by my comments. Do you mind sharing what social media accounts you are following to help you see all the fun places or festivals that are going on? I feel I constantly only hear those things after the festival is over. Haha. I jut have no idea what platform people are getting those info from.
alovetart (1 year ago)
The crowds would be overwhelming with a stroller! I wore Annabelle until I could no longer carry her and that worked for us in busy parts of CA. xo
alovetart (1 year ago)
OH that's not negative at all, it's real. I know that we don't bring a stroller around downtown for that reason! I would think everything would be accessible but it's not and that's unfortunate. I think it's a great age for Annabelle, she loves to people watch and ride the el. I can see how that would be tricky for you and you were in the heart of it all. xo
JoyfulBeauty (1 year ago)
I just realize how negative my comment might seem like. I didn't mean it that way. I love Chicago, I just miss my way home too. Before we had a child, we lived at 405 North Wabash. That was probably my best year ever. Everything was accessible everything was so beautiful. There are so many options so many things to do. But I think a child definitely changed my life so much. Living in the city with a child is no easy task. But once she gets a bit older to Anabelle's age, things will be fun again I'm sure. Then she can enjoy and appreciate what the city could provide rather than just sitting in her car seat staring at the sky all day when I push her around through the crowd. 😂😂😂
Daniela Milan Souza (1 year ago)
Spot on, Mary! I moved with my family to Chicago from Brazil 4 years ago and I just love the city. We live in Wicker Park close to the blue line and it's just perfect. Everything is walking distance and commuting to the loop or O'Hare is super convenient. Like you I fell in love with the city because of the art and museums. I nerd out on all the buildings, public art and galleries. We even bought a membership to the Art Institute. I love taking my 5 year old daughter there. The Chicago Architecture Foundation tours are the best. Also not to miss are all the Frank Lloyd Right and Art Deco buildings. There are a couple of architecture events coming up - the Chicago Architecture Biennial and Open House Chicago, try checking them out! I live close to the 606 (the elevated park) and cycling there is so much fun. Winter can be hard, especially for us used to tropical weather, but it's a matter of getting used to it, hanging on and praying spring comes soon. I also love that each neighborhood is unique. You can be a tourist in your own city for a long time until you have a chance to visit them all. Most of the violent crimes happen on the South Side. We're seeing and increase in crime in the neighborhoods. There's so much the city could do to empower the poor/crime ridden communities. There are a lot of activists working on it too. As far as crime goes, as usual I'm street wise and avoid being out late at night. I feel very safe especially having lived all my life in a big city in Brazil. I love how you embrace your happiness and are not afraid to pursue it, even if it means moving a lot. I wish you all the best and I hope you get to enjoy your stay here.
alovetart (1 year ago)
Hi Daniela! You know the newer Chicago more than I do, it's been so long. So much has changed even though I've only been away nearly 6 years. You have made some really interesting suggestions here - I love the Art Institute and I really need to check out the 606. I imagine we will become a biking family come next spring! I just feel like there are so many options, so many ways to explore the city and still have more to see. I totally agree about crime and wish I would have touched on some - I know that that's on people's minds when they hear of Chicago and don't know the city. I used to work in Bucktown on Damen and loved that area! I need to go back to all the places I used to go to check it out. So much catching up to do! The hardest months are Feb-Apr. But maybe we can plan a little get-away then or hope Metin's job brings him back to San Diego and we can tag along! Thanks for the comment!

I was honestly really afraid of being stuck when I knew deep down I was ready to move on. We were lucky to be renters and the owners had us month to month after the first year! xxoo

Thanks for the little part about where to visit in Chicago! I’ll also check out Instagram. I’m going to Chicago in November for work but I’m also going to make a little trip out of it. So happy for you Mary! Glad you’re doing well!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Let me know if you need other suggestions! Check out the Violet Hour off the blue line for some classy drinks. If you like Thai, Noodles in the Pot on Halsted - Pad See Ew with tofu medium spicy, specifically. AND spring rolls, oh my goodness. I've had thai all over this nation and nothing compares! xo

My husband and I moved back to Indiana three years ago. It's been an adjustment and probably won't stay here forever but it is what it is. Happy to see you back on YouTube. I miss your videos.

Mary Kale We are originally from Indiana but moved to PA and Idaho for my husbands work. We loved living out west but moved back because of family. We always found ourselves flying back to the Midwest; no one would come visit us. 🙁

mandy22f (1 year ago)
Yay! So happy to see again on here! Glad to hear you guys are doing great :) My family and i were in the exact same position a few years ago. My husband wasn't born and raised in the Netherlands, but i was born and raised in Amsterdam. I'm a city girl by heart, i need culture, markets, diversity and museums! We moved to a different place years ago and i just wasn't happy. We also decided to move back closer to Amsterdam and i feel like i've found myself back again! I felt insecure and numb in the city where we used to live and didn't know who i was anymore. I don't see it as a failure (although a few people actually said how unfortunate it was and basically it had been a waste of time, can you believe that?) to me it was a huge life lesson, i've learned so much about myself. What i want, want i need and like in life and how important it is to live in a place where you feel happy and "you" especially with having kids. You need to be happy and healthy (mentally) so you can be a happy and healthy mom! :) xoxo
alovetart (1 year ago)
That's so true! Were you in a small town for a while? What was different for you? I'm glad you found your way back. I've been to Amsterdam and it was my FAVORITE of all the cities we went to long ago. Frankfurt, Vienna, Brussels. Loved them all but something about Amsterdam. Loved it. I'm glad that you didn't listen to those people and knew that it was best for you. And you are who you are now because of all of the decisions you've made. xo

I loved this video and can relate so much, but on opposite locations. I'm from AZ originally, spent a ton of time in California, and have always known I would "settle down" in California. But, I fought that for a long time, and have lived in NYC for the past five years. And I've gotta say, my soul hurts. I hate it here, even though I have a life and loved ones here. But I miss the desert, lifestyle, and climate. I miss friendly people. I had a big life event happen recently that was terrible, but I'm taking it as my cue to make the big move back "home" to CA. I thought it would feel like a failure too, but I am too busy now being excited for all the things I have missed. I can feel my soul healing already. This video came at a great time for me, and I appreciate your honesty! So glad you are in a place you love!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Thanks for sharing that, it really is hard to move back. It's just such an emotional rollercoaster and hard to deal with all the emotions. I hope that the move back goes smoothly for you and you settle and heal even more. xo
Kathleen Sauer (1 year ago)
You guys took an opportunity for an adventure to go to SD! How Terrific ! Many people are afraid to leave the comfort of a place they know well & move somewhere where they do not know anyone & strike out on their own. In my view , this was a rousing success ! You did it! You experienced a new place , started a family , bought & sold a home, altered your eating style, ventured into minimalism ! You created an entire life there & lived it to the fullest without the cushion of family close by . Again, Success! By choosing to relocate again, you have embarked on yet another adventure... it just happens to be closer to where you grew up... but again , you have chosen a place you have fondness for, & one where you will thrive once again with your family. What a rich history you are creating for Annabelle! And you are modeling for her that one does not need to always stay in one place; one can follow their heart & seek happiness in a new environment , make new friends & have new experiences! It's all very exciting! Good for You!🌸 So happy to see you back ! I just started to follow you on IG! Yay!

So happy to see you! No decision is permanent. I admire your family that you make a decision and if that decision doesn't work, you make another decision. You are so smart!

Good for you guys for being able to move basically because you want to, and to be comfortable with change like that. It's not an easy thing to do and sure takes some courage. Equally good for you deciding to "move home". I've always lived in/near the city I'm in and we are close to both sides of our family. I do wonder but it would be like to move away from everyone but I don't think I could. Glad you guys are happy with your decision to move. I know you're not big into social media as much anymore but I sure enjoyed seeing you on YouTube again. Take care :)

Thank you! I'm lucky to have a supportive hubs that's all in with me. It helps a ton. xo!

I'm so happy that you've found your way and that Chicago was what your were looking for. You've also helped put my mind at ease. I recently moved out of my parents house in florida and moved to cali. Although I share a place with my brother it was a difficult transition having my parents so far away. But like you said you have to experience different things and that's always what I tell myself if I start to regret something.
sliu54 (1 year ago)
Mary Kale I don't regret it at all! Even though I get home sick it's definitely something I needed to do. I live in between San Diego and Los Angeles.
alovetart (1 year ago)
I hope you don't regret this change but it's okay if you do. Big picture, this is a part of your life. You have much more life to live and enjoy what's in front of you if you wan. Where are you in CA? Take this time to explore when you can, get the most out of it if it doesn't feel permanent.

Thanks for sharing! ..I'm in Chicago, love some aspects, but hoping to get back to Santa Monica...Wrigleyville just isnt safe anymore:(.

Glad all is going well Mary! My son (17) is going to Chicago this weekend to tour U of Chicago & Northwestern. I'm hoping he hates them both because that's just too far from this Houston mama! Ha!Ha! I know it's a really cool city though.
alovetart (1 year ago)
haha! He will love Northwestern. I used to work there and it's gorgeous! But I hear you, I will have a really hard time when Annabelle goes away to college. Our plan is for her to go to Concordia or another Canadian university since my hubs is Canadian. SO FARRRR. ugh. :) xo

Curious to know what your favorite parts of San Diego are?
Jenn (1 year ago)
Mary Kale yes I love cocktails at Wavehouse! When my friend from Vegas would visit me in San Diego, we would go there so she could soak up as much beach time as possible!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Oh that's a good one! I love Coronado for the beach and a really beautiful stroll. I love PB (pacific beach) when you want to watch people practice surfing at the Wave House. Or OB (Ocean beach) to watch surfers off the pier. I love the zoo and went all the time. I love Balboa Park!

I went to Indiana with my husband for Formula One race in 2001, and ended up driving to Chicago for just one day. Fell in love with the city, told my husband that if we were to ever move, this is where I would want to go. We live in LA, raised our boys here, and my husband is a business-owner, so we aren't going anywhere, but I would make a move without a second thought if I had the chance. My mom is in Chicago right now with a tour, and she is absolutely taken aback by it. She told me that she gets why I fell in love with it way back when. I envy you for having the guts and the ability to move there! Can't wait to learn more about it from you! Best of luck to you and your family in this new life chapter!
alovetart (1 year ago)
There's just something about it, I take Annabelle to the city constantly because it just gets me all worked up in a good way! I just love it and I'm glad to hear that you and your mom do, too! I hope she's here tomorrow and longer because the weather will cool and she will see how gorgeous fall is here! LA is a fun place and I wish I had seen more. We had a friend in Venice so we'd visit and walk the beaches, etc. but didn't fully see the city. Hopefully one day! Any suggestions in case we make it that way?

Thank you Colleen!! For sure, I will hopefully be filming Friday and uploading a few days afterward. Nights are a little tricky for me to upload, I'm still figuring out why I'm dizzy because I don't believe it's vertigo anymore. Soon! xo

Welcome back to the Chicagoland area. I didn't realize how much Chicago gets bashed until I lived on the east coast for a year. Love my city. It's not perfect, but it's so beautiful and full of open-minded people.
Sonia S. (1 year ago)
It doesn't have the highest murder rate in the country...that's a common misconception because of how it's portrayed in the media. From 2010-2015, it was in 18th place. 2016 was a bad year for the city and it was in fourth place with St. Louis having the highest rate. It had the highest total number of homicides, which is of course very sad, but it's going to take some time to get over racist redlining that created high-poverty areas where most of the homicides take place. It's not Trump's fault that the city struggles to recover, but it is his fault for oversimplifying the problem and just saying that feds are coming to Chicago when it's going to need different interventions to work through it all.
Fatty Cakes (1 year ago)
Chicago has the highest murder rate in the country. That's not Donald Trump's fault.
alovetart (1 year ago)
Yeah... our current president doesn't help matters when it comes to Chicago's reputation. It's a great place to live.
PaintThosePiggies (1 year ago)
It was nice to hear your journey back. My husband's family all lives in Chicago and although we live 2.5 hours away, I've been asking him of we should move there. I was a nomad as a kid never spending more than 3 years somewhere, so being here 12 years really makes me want to move!
alovetart (1 year ago)
Come on over, it's a great place to live!
