5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

30661 ratings | 2771921 views
Please Note: Young People Wear Many of These Styles Throughout Europe. These tips are geared toward 35+ year old travelers. Thanks for watching! Grab a Wolters World Shirt http://www.woltersworld.com/shop Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe. 1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead? 2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US. 3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or "skinnier" fit than in the US. 4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts. 5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles. Please Note: This Video is for 35+ year old US travelers heading to Europe. Young Europeans do wear most of these styles and trends, but the 35+ European crowd do not wear them to the same extent. And the locals won't care what you wear, so this is more to help you blend in a bit better. Great travels to you all & Thank you for all the comments & subscriptions.

+Bernard Kay unless in you in a sketchy part of a big cities you are perfectly fine in America. Hit if you start walking in area with bar windows and a lot of graffiti turn around..Most people who do get shot are drug dealers and drug buyers. Sadly though most them are 16 to 20 years olds addicts.

Most of this only really applies to Italy, maybe France too. Italians and the French are sticklers for fashionable, elegant appearances, "figura" as the Italians say, and much more so than the rest of Europe. Northern and Eastern Europe is much more casual.

Fat men and women from the US wear athletic outfits even when they have never been inside a gym, they think they are working out just by wearing it 😆😂🤣
Chachi Shapiro (5 days ago)
Darkwash Jeans and an oxford shirt. I’ll also opt for a pair of simple white sneakers. This is pretty much my uniform and when I’m in Europe wearing this, no one knows I’m an american until I start speaking.
vavavoom111Q (6 days ago)
This doesn't apply for Slovakia/Czech republic. We wear sports clothes, sneakers, baseball caps etc. Actually, here in SR, we make fun of people that wear slip-ons, flats or other fashion shoes for hikes in high tatras and other mountains, because if someone gets injured on easy hike, it is 9/10 cases bad shoes that caused it and many of them are foreign tourists that probably expect we have nice flat roads in mountains

In eastern Europe (the slav countries mainly) a lot of people wear tracksuits.

Step 1. Don't refer to Europe as a homogeneous zone when it consists of 50 countries various native languages currency zone and differing cultures. Scunthorpe and Venice are hardly comparable.

Counterpoint: wear something you're comfortable in. of course, don't be exposing genitals 'cause your shorts are too short, it's common sense. If you like caps, wear them, if you like your university jumper, wear it. Pickpockets are EVERYWHERE, not just Europe. Keep your eye out, be comfortable, but don't let paranoia stop you from interacting with locals, chances are the person next to you in a train station or whatever is just trying to get through their day too.

I'm an Arab and visit Europe at least twice a year ..I was in London and Paris a month ago..%90 of people in both cities were tourists..you can see Arabs Japanese Chinese German Italian and many more..you can figure it out from their looks or the language they are talking. Nobody said oh look millions of foreign tourists let's rob them..!!!! What makes Americans so different?
Facina (9 days ago)
I just want to know what to wear so no one blows me up or kidnaps me. I hear Europe has a real problem with new arrivals.
Romano Benini (9 days ago)
These tips are correct and important for Italy !! Believe in mr Wolters. And Not only of 35+ in my opinion . In Italy we think the commonplace that American tourists are slovenly and rude . No flip Flops or Shorts expecially in the churches and no plush or Sports clothes or leggins in a good restaurant and no pajama in the supermarket! Please !! Everyone in Italy thinks that American dont respect Italy and Italians for this reason ! If you dont worry about style or fashion please have care about the places You are or visit in Italy .

Mark, my biggest travelwear question I've never been able to get an answer to. Does a guy need to bring a suit jacket or sport coat (Not suit) To wear to church or a nice restaurant in europe?
Margaret Swartz (15 days ago)
What bullshit. I'm a 58 year old grown ass woman and I'm going to wear what I want to wear. I mean really do we ask the French not to wear berets when they come here?
Martin Shillitoe (15 days ago)
Europe is not a single culture. It’s 50 different countries and everyone is different!! And this tips are nonsense. You can wear all these things and not look out of place.
You don't have to "fit in", you just have to be yourself. We in Spain use T-shirts with US university names on them, why you can't?; we really don't pay any attention to tourist's clothes, in fact is nice to see different ways that comes from other parts of the world, so have a good time!
In english has to be fashionist not fashionistA. A fashionist is a maker, leader, specialist in, or follower of fashions. You don't say novelista but novelist, likewise journalist, artist and so on. It doesn't matter that people is using it, is wrong and sounds ugly. And that applies to any spanish word used in english, sounds pretty bad
Lisa Joline (16 days ago)
When I was in Rome I could wear whatever I wanted because having blonde hair and blue eyes immediately gave away that I m a tourist anyway 🤦🏼‍♀️😂
Paul Roberts (16 days ago)
Having previously lived in London for so long, I can tell you that US tourists can be spotted a mile away just because of how you dress. Japanese tourists also instantly recognisable by the fact they move around slowly in tightly formed groups taking photos like they're going out of fashion!

I lived in Europe for many years, in Germany, the Netherlands, and Ireland. This advice is a bunch of baloney. Europeans, at least in all the places that I have visited, wear comfortable clothes, including ball caps, sweat pants, khakis, and running shoes. They wear whatever they want. Yes, an American logo shirt or cap MIGHT mark you as a tourist, or an expat, like I was. if anybody bothers to notice. Europeans are also not out to get you if you are American, even the criminals are just as likely to target a native as they are you. What they are looking for is an easy target, just like in the US. In the years that I lived there, I was never robbed or pickpocketed. Europe is a very diverse area of the world, and there are many foreigners there, including Americans. The population mostly doesn't give a shit where you're from.

Alexandru Saulea (23 days ago)
Thats what I thought in the first time, but a sad storry now, when I went to Sweeden (I am from Romania),all my traveling passangers were gypsies who go there for begging, and when I came back, all the other passangers were not gypsies but from my own people,THIEVES! Only me and one guy were tourists
Jag Sidhu (23 days ago)
Why go to a place where I have to worry about getting robbed just because I am wearing a baseball cap. Plenty of awesome places in this beautiful country of ours.

Thank you for mentioning athletic wear in Europe. We always think such people are on their way to the gym /football training or that they are underdressed. Good videos!
Trabber Shir (26 days ago)
Having spent most of the last 2 years wondering around Europe, I think your recommendation against khaki is very regional. My cargo pants identify me as a tourist, but when wearing my khakis I have been mistaken for a local by European travelers while in Ireland, Britain, and Germany. Although I may be a little younger than your target audience. Some other places khakis were definitely out of place however, Bucharest comes to mind.
David Gamache (26 days ago)
Personally, I'm proud to be an American and I hope everyone I meet knows that I am. Why are you so ashamed to be who you are?
Oleg GG (26 days ago)
You wear a white underwear under t-shirt = you are american. You wear recognizable t-shirt instead of underwear under a shirt and collar is crumpled = you are american

As a European I can say that you can wear whatever you want in Europe. Baseball caps? Yes sir! Khakis? Absolutely! Adidas hoodies? Certainly!
nongthip (28 days ago)
As someone who has had a Seattle Seahawks baseball cap surgically attached to my head for a couple of decades, I just can't imagine to lose it for the sake of "blending in" anywhere on earth. Trying to hide one's American-ness is often futile. Remember "Rusty" in National Lampoon's European Vacation with the beret? As for athletic gear I am currently in Thailand wearing fake Adidas track pants and a bright red DCSHOECOUSA-logo hoodie. In the UK this kind of gear is more associated with drug dealers and other shady characters. My Irish friend refers to my Adidas pants/jackets as "Thug gear", like I'm an extra in some Guy Ritchie ganster movie. Anyway, thanks for the video =)
