I love speaking up for mental illness and advocating but I can never get behind a cute anime girl who cuts herself as a mascot....it’s like these people are making fun of everything I’ve went through and what thousands have went through....

Girl: This is so cute what does it say? Man: I wanna die... Me: Perfect where do I get one! No, but really. I have been struggling a lot with depression and suicide. If we did this in America, we would be taken to a mental hospital. If you have a problem in America they think you are crazy. People never take me seriously. Just remember. I am there for you.

This is beyond heartbreaking. I'm Japanese and I'm so lucky to be born in a country where they recognize mental illnesses as a serious thing. My parents didn't take me seriously at first as well.

Elements of the same issues in Japan are in America. If anyone says that these people would get more help in America, I would be hard-pressed to flat out agree. In one way, I'd say having a style, a platform for people who share the same mindset can feel seen and feel included is a good thing, but I also believe this can be very harmful. Adding "cute" things to something wicked or destructive is how people become enabled, desensitized, and usually placated. They get ATTENTION and temporarily sated, but do not get help and perhaps even be perceived by people on the outside as "okay", "normal", and "happy". Think of extremes like incels, pro-anorexia groups, Hikikomori, etc. People of the same issues become enabled by people of the same issues. I've seen this in art communities. One fandom I've seen this in is the Furry fandom. I'm an outsider who ended up researching and scouting among some online forums only to find people who already had serious mental health issues are enabled rather than helped in this fandom (and no, not all people or all of the fandom is negatively impacted). Some people are enabled because they now have this fursona that they escape behind. They spend more effort and energy supporting their online persona/fursona because it gets them attention rather than seeking help. I was very put off with how this fandom is open and inclusive, yet some people exhibited awful online etiquette by being overtly sexual, putting all of their personal identity out into the world, and especially dumping their emotional strife onto strangers or anyone who will listen. I'm not here to bitch about the Furry fandom. (It has it's place for people, it DOES help people, and it's a way of expression.) I only offer it as one example of seeing how these "labels", "groups", "fashions", etc can sometimes enable people the wrong way rather than helping them. It's a really sad thing. I myself have depression/anxiety but have been to counseling for almost a year trying to find myself again. The world has populated so quickly, has so much outside stimulation, and people are seen as one ant of a million, that we become numb to our own internal lack of peace, we forget to breathe, and we wonder why we feel alone when we ARE one in a million.

America/ Western countries' "support system" doesn't work. I'm from America and I feel much better about life living in Japan than I did in America. In America, in New York, is where I had to hide things or be ostracized. Therapists never helped me - they either overprescribed medication, or told me things like it's my fault, or that I could only feel better by going vegan. I feel just about the opposite of everything people always say about Japan being "all conformist except for those weird goth people" (and you can't pretend this video isn't condescending), etc. In Japan, there are a lot of different subcultures and the kind of diverse art that no one would allow in America. ... I've also had a lot of suicide attempts, and I still want to die pretty much constantly, but in Japan, I feel like there can be a future for me, and for the art that I want to create, in ways that America or Western countries would never allow.

Imagine you buy one of those badges and bring it back to your own country, and show your classmates and one of them who is Japanese half saw that 😂
YoNiceSkirtXOXO (5 days ago)
Sorry but it's time for Japanese to wake up. by watching this video I really think that the Japanese live in another dimension ... This is what leads to the confinement of society and of oneself. This "Yami kawai" is absolutely not the way out of depression, heal or denounced depression, society ...  It is even worse, it is to lie to oneself, to imagine a bubble, a world that is absolutely not suited to them, since it contains& have "decorations" which reminds suicide, death ... I do not see what is worse than that ... The clearest example of what they do is like breaking things and hiding them under a carpet... They must consulted doctors, if there is not in Japan, travel. The problem is that they want to live in "their tranquility", the more time passes, the worse their conditions and that leads to isolation, lack of emotion, of life, then begins depression, emptiness, obscure ideas , rejection of everything ... then suicide. We are in 2019, the Japanese do not know that young people is the future, do not they know that in many countries thanks to young people, the mores of their countries have change thanks to them. It is not always saying the same thing that things will move "society is like this or like that", society is also them. It's simple, if you do not agree, show and let yourself be heard that you are not agree. The others are the others, you are you. Being excluded, so what? Do you live for others? The world is not big enough?
I never knew Yami Kawaii was used as a form of therapy. When my mom and I went to Japan, I bought tons of Yami Kawaii things and I still have them. It makes me sad to look at them now.

I’d give her a cat if I was her husband. It’s something that brings her happiness and joy and keeps her from falling back into depression. Plus your giving the animal a life it deserves. Such a small price to pay to save someone’s life.

Karyn Garnett (7 days ago)
I think there's also some other dimensions to this...for example, people refuse to take you seriously if you're "cute," it is frustrating and maddening, so I think a bit of rebellion and anger is natural. Nobody hears you or takes you seriously, in your younger life, and they keep shutting you down and your thoughts and ideas....well, that would lead to depression and repressed anger. When you are not allowed to be yourself and are just told you're cute...this is a way to fight back. Maybe the grandparents who witnessed the atomic bombs, have no time for the younger generations' "problems" ....

Idk why but in the middle of this video I just started getting teary eyed for these people. Although there are no resources for them since mental illness is considered taboo, their escapism or therapy like fashion can help them cope. I was in awe. I really hope these people find happiness one day.

A S (10 days ago)
This breaks my heart... I was suicidal and in a deep depression. Started taking anti depressants a few months ago and it has litterally saves my life. Infact I am happy. It's understandable that you try to bring joy into your life by petting animals and dressing happy but once your hormones are imbalanced there is little to do besides get help. It's a brain injury. You wouldn't tell someone with cancer to ignore the disease. No amount of petting my dog, going to the gym, eating healthy helped. Japan is a beautiful country but they need to take this epidemic seriously 🧡
Nero Bruno (11 days ago)
If you're depressed and suicidal you have other things to do than pose for photos, upload them, dress up, attend conventions etc, etc. This reeks like that women in Fight Club that visits those meetings.... The truly depressed and suicidal of Japan have simply been made into a MEME or fad and their real world misery is being MILKED to sell to people that don't seem to have worries like financial debt, employed poverty, unemployment, losing the house or homelessness. This looks like misery-porn. I hope I'm wrong. I really do.

Expressing your self is fine finding a way to cope with it is even better but they need medical therapy it's depression after all
Karen M (11 days ago)
I used to think these persons were weird and over acting, until I passed through it. I've always had problems to deal with my emotions, so, when I experienced heartbreaking it was impossible to me to handle. I was depressed, I disconnected some times, but I didn't wnt to die. I didn't want people to see me sad, I didn't want to be rude. So, I unconsciously push myself so hard to show kindness. My voice were softer, I'd apologise about everything I did or didn't. My classmates would notice, and some would laugh; but I rather being childish and kind than rude and sad. It's a psychological kind of defence, so, I respect the way people act or talk or wear. As long as they are good human beings to each other.
j. D. (11 days ago)
Really insightful ending. Also, the whole "I love you, I kill you" thing strikes me as possibly a more blatant form of psychological corrections. ( medium.com/@zulie_rane/the-psychological-reason-you-love-to-squeeze-cute-things-cd25a907294c ) I was thinking that, given when we are overwhelmed with positive emotions our brains balance out by sending out seemingly inappropriate aggressive thoughts ("you're such a cute baby, I want to eat you up" :P), it would be nice if the same thing happened on the other side when we are experiencing extreme negative emotions. Maybe that is precisely what they are accomplishing here.

Misery Go Round (12 days ago)
It's sad that people can barely Express themselves with being shunned by their own people. Here where I live, that kind of dressing is very abnormal and people will and are not afraid to call you out, make you feel terrible, and publicly humiliate you just because you don't dress normally. I wore a face mask to work because I was sick, and I got weird looks, people scoffing behind my back, and telling their children "ugh... dont ever be like that". IT WAS A SIMPLE FACE MASK due to a FLU. Such ignorance. I love this style because for me, while I find it adorable, I can wear my misanthropy on my sleeve without pretending "im normal, like everyone else". But at the end of the day, the mean words still hurt, and I'm back to pretending I'm like everyone else because I just dont want to be looked at at all anymore.
Himawari (12 days ago)
I thought it was just yume kawaii...whats the difference between yami and yume?
Menhera Archive (1 day ago)
Yumekawaii (dreamy cute) is an umbrella term covering all japanese pastel aesthetic, Yamikawaii was derived from it as opposite aesthetic. It's basicly like Sweet Lolita vs Gothic Lolita.
