On this episode, we discuss MLA style, including what it is, who uses it in their research, some important things to remember when writing a paper in MLA format, what's new in the 8th Edition of the MLA Handbook, and how to format in-text citations and a works cited page. MLA style is often used by scholars in the humanities and the liberal arts. The humanities and the liberal arts consist of subjects like English literature, rhetoric and composition, cultural studies, and foreign language studies and literature. You will probably use MLA style if you are writing a literary analysis, a persuasive essay, a literary criticism, an expository essay, or a research paper for the humanities. In addition to these topics, we cover: A few things to remember when using MLA style, such as keeping 1-inch margins on all sides. What's changed in the 8th Edition, for example, how MLA has been adapted for digital research. The format of in-text citations, and how they are needed if you are paraphrasing or directly quoting a source. How to complete a Works Cited page, including how the second and subsequent lines are indented. Of course, it's no replacement for actually reading a copy of the MLA Handbook yourself or looking up those little details when you need them. Think of this video as a first look at what's changed, whether you're a teacher or student. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/KfQ8/

[Select 720p for sharper images.] Learn how to create an annotated bibliography. We'll also talk about how to document online sources. I believe the format conventions regarding Internet sources will continue to evolve, so this video may be revised later. Also, in my opinion, it's OK to skip a line between bibliographic entries. The music is copyright-free music from GarageBand. 2015 REVISION: Sometimes a jpg file name is nonsensical, like when it's just numbers; that jpg title conveys no useful information to the reader. So, in those cases, I recommend using a description of the image, e.g. Movie still from Iron Man. Now on Twitter @mistersato411

*MLA formatting is for liberal arts and humanities, generally. *APA is for the social sciences, generally. I have heard of a few science instructors requesting APA, but I wouldn't say that this is the norm. *Chicago (CMS) is most often used by historians and book publishers. *If you have a science assignment or a subject not otherwise mentioned, consult your instructor. There are many other style guides available--too many to mention here. *Note that these are general guidelines. Your instructor may want something different, and it is well within his/her right to do so. *Thanks to the fine folks at the Online Writing Lab at Purdue University. Your website is top-notch!

I teach at an all girls school. This video was originally made for my students, hence I say, "Good morning, ladies." If you leave a comment complaining about that statement, then I will delete your comment. Go work on your paper. (Also, you don't see my students complaining about that "All men are created equal line" in our most famous national document.) Set up your spacing, then write a body paragraph using short and long quotes from a novel or short story in MLA style. I have made a new version of this video that is easy to read. This is a quick video tutorial for setting up a Word 2010 document in MLA format. A lot of professors grade strictly when it comes to format of an essay. Unfortunately, students are often so busy focusing on writing their paper (at 3:00 AM the night before it's due) that they don't have time to worry about properly formatting it. This video shows how to set up the typeface, font size, line spacing, and paragraph spacing for MLA format. It also covers how to set up the initial heading and page numbers. If you need to know how to set up a Works Cited page or format citations for webpages, articles from databases, or books, I have another video that covers those topics: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4deiZvUJ3U Hopefully this video will help.
