Is It Better to Have a Functional or Product Unit-Specific Business Structure?
When aspiring entrepreneurs envision their future companies, they tend to think about the products they will build. Not too much time is spent thinking about the fact that if the company grows, they will have to introduce a management layer into the organization. These changes introduce many new levels of complexity into company-building, so a recent KPCB Engineering Meetup gathered Mike Curtis, VP of Engineering at Airbnb, Jeff Huber, SVP at Google X, and Alex Roetter, VP of Engineering at Twitter, on a panel moderated by KPCB Partner Mike Abbott to share tips and tricks from those who have been through the process.

Labor Markets and Minimum Wage: Crash Course Economics #28
How much should you get paid for your job? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Your skill set, the demand for the skills you have, and what other people are getting paid around you all factor in. In a lot of ways, labor markets work on supply and demand, just like many of the markets we talk about in Crash Course Econ. But, again, there aren't a lot of pure, true markets in the world. There are all kinds of oddities and regulations that change the way labor markets work. One common (and kind of controversial one) is the minimum wage. The minimum wage has potential upsides and downsides, and we'll take a look at the various arguments for an against it. Crash Course is on Patreon! What is Gross Domestic Product (GDP)?
Picture the economy as a giant supermarket, with billions of goods and services inside. At the checkout line, you watch as the cashier rings up the price for each finished good or service sold. What have you just observed? The cashier is computing a very important number: gross domestic product, or GDP. GDP is the market value of all finished goods and services, produced within a country in a year. But, what does "market value" mean? And what defines a "finished good"? These, and more questions, percolate inside your head. Meanwhile, the cashier starts ringing up the total, and you’re left confused. An array of things pass by you — A bottle of wine. A carton of eggs. A cake from the local bakers. A tractor, of all things. A bunch of ballpens. A bag of flour. In this video, join us as we show you how to make sense of this important economic indicator. You’ll learn how GDP is computed, and you’ll get answers to some pretty interesting questions along the way. Questions like, “Why are the eggs in my homemade omelet part of the GDP, but the eggs my baker uses are not? Why does my bottle of French wine contribute to France’s GDP, even if I bought it in the United States?” Most importantly, you’ll also learn why polar bears aren’t part of the GDP computation, even if they’re incredibly cute. So, buckle in for a bit—in the following videos we’ll dive into specifics on GDP. USA vs USSR Fight! The Cold War: Crash Course World History #39
In which John Green teaches you about the Cold War, which was occasionally hot, but on average, it was just cool. In the sense of its temperature. It was by no means cool, man. After World War II, there were basically two big geopolitical powers left to divide up the world. And divide they did. The United States and the Soviet Union divvied up Europe in the aftermath of the war, and then proceeded to spend the next 45 years fighting over the rest of the world. It was the great ideological struggle, with the US on the side of capitalism and profit, and the USSR pushing Communism, so-called. While both sides presented themselves as the good guy in this situation, the reality is that there are no good guys. Both parties to the Cold War engaged in forcible regime changes, built up vast nuclear arsenals, and basically got up to dirty tricks. If you had to pick a bad guy though, I would point out that the USSR had no intention of bringing Laika the Cosmonaut Dog home alive. That poor dog never had a shot. Sorry to disappoint, but the economist t-shirts are not a real product. Thanks to Raoul Meyer for the YUGOGAL photo. Now, the last couple of weeks have been difficult in the world of pro cycling. The top level looks relatively healthy, but go down to the 2nd division teams and things aren’t as rosy, with a multitude of teams stopping at the end of the year. There are many reasons why that might be the case, but fundamentally could it be because pro cycling sponsorship doesn’t give a good enough return for the investment? The world tour isn’t short of sponsors but how effective is this sponsorship? To asses this we have a quick test! The Tour of Britain is on at the moment and it’s got a star-studded lineup. A full roster of sprinters, Quickstep have a showstopper of a team, as do Team Sky. Given that one of the stages starts just 20km away, we let James off the leash to go and see what he could find. We’ll start cycling shorts with an interesting bit of news coming from Cycling Science on Twitter. Research published in Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism. Tested whether carbohydrate really does delay the onset of fatigue in trained cyclists. The conclusion was that yes, it does, in MEN, but weirdly, not in women!
