Footage courtesy of Facebook.com/stratusimagery Stunning images of the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, visible across parts of the United Kingdom, were captured at Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland on Monday night. The colourful phenomenon was visible across Scotland and Northern Ireland and as far south as Oxfordshire. Aurora Borealis is the result of collisions between gaseous particles in the earth's atmosphere and charged particles released from the sun. Like what you see? The phenomenon is caused by eruptions on the surface of the Sun, and this most recent activity has been unexpectedly strong. The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, occur about 60 or 70 miles above the earth’s surface —about 10 times higher than a jet aircraft flies — and can extend hundreds of miles into space. The most common colour displayed is a brilliant yellow-green, but the aurora borealis can also produce red, blue and purple patterns. An Aurora sometimes referred to as polar lights or northern lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions. Auroras are produced when the magnetosphere is sufficiently disturbed by the solar wind that the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma, mainly in the form of electrons and protons, precipitate them into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere), where their energy is lost. The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emit light of varying colour and complexity. The form of the Aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions. The Northern Lights Driver's eye view preview

06:12
Video125.co.uk Take a ride aboard an InterCity 125 High Speed Train (HST) from Edinburgh to Aberdeen. Filmed in1996, this is a journey of great contrasts. Starting out from Scotland's capital through the valley of what used to be an artificial loch, our train calls at Haymarket in the west of the city before turning north towards the greatest and most iconic railway structure in the UK, the Forth Bridge. We see it from the Driver's cab, the best way to appreciate the incredible structure, in fact the track deck is the only level horizontal plane on the entire bridge. After crossing the Firth of Forth, we turn east to run up the North Sea coast towards Dundee. To get to Dundee we have to cross the River Tay and this is achieved by means of the longest railway bridge in Britain. Paul Coia's narration reminds us of the terrible disaster that destroyed the first bridge here - remains of which are shown in this preview. All the while, our HST is followed by a helicopter for some amazing camera angles. At Montrose we encounter a single line due to the topography of the area. We learn of the river bridge that was constructed yet never saw a revenue earning train. The final run into the Granite City takes us through the town of Stonehaven with its delightful harbour. The train was named The Northern Lights and ran daily from Kings Cross taking over seven hours and running for over 500 miles. Arriving on the East Coast in late afternoon, with the sun setting in the clear sky, this really is The Northern Lights.

You might be able to see the Northern Lights in the UK tonight

05:09
GET your cameras at the ready as the aurora borealis will be visible from parts of Britain tonight.Forget going to Iceland, Sweden or Norway – stargazers across certain parts of the UK might be able to glimpse the spectacular Northern Lights tonight.  The largest solar flare in a decade occurs on Wednesday September 6, according to scientists. According to Alistair McLean, Managing Director of The Aurora Zone, the Northern Lights might be visible from the UK again tonight. He said: “The CMEs’ arrival is expected to trigger a G3 magnetic storm in the atmosphere which, in turn, will create more prolific Northern Lights displays in northern territories and maybe some sightings in areas well beyond the usual boundaries. “It is, therefore, a possibility that the Northern Lights could even be viewed in Southern England.”Both the Space Weather Prediction Center and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) believe outstanding displays will occur tonight (September 8). However it's very dependant on the weather so keep your eyes glued to the weather guide – rain and cloud will prevent it from being visible. The Aurora Borealis, form when charged particles from the sun penetrate the earth's magnetic field and collide with atoms and molecules to create bursts of light. The Northern Lights are is most commonly spotted in Norway and Sweden but recently solar activity has been increasing with the light shows occasionally visible in the skies above the UK.Northern Lights travel expert, Jonny Cooper, founder of Off the Map Travel, said: "The beauty of nature and the Northern Lights is it's difficult to predict. "We would recommend finding a spot with clear dark skies away from any pollution, look north and be patient. "It just takes a break in the cloud to see the Aurora and it's well worth the adventure."Seeing the Northern Lights topped Brits’ Bucket Lists, in a recent survey with 45% of people saying it was their number one travel goal – so make sure you jump on a train and head north this evening. Top tips for seeing the Lights: 1. Wait until at least 30 minutes after sunset, due just after 6.30pm 3. Wait until the cloud clears and for your eyes to get used to the darkness 4. Stay far away from artificial light sourcesIf you're a bit too far south to spot the lights tonight, start planning a trip to Iceland. November to March is the best time to visit and you have more of a chance of seeing them if you go at a time of the month when the moon is small. It's a good idea to stay somewhere that has outdoor hot tubs as you can sit out in the warm and watch the night sky for any glimpses of the phenomenon.

Red and green lights were visible from the north of Scotland to as far south as Jersey. The incredible sight was also visible in places such as Gloucestershire, Essex and Norfolk. They were also spotted in southern parts of Norway on Tuesday in another unusual display, as the lights don't usually shine as brightly in the south. Northern Lights UK: Is the breathtaking Aurora Borealis still visible TONIGHT?

04:14
A powerful solar storm erupting from the heart of the solar system triggered last night one of the most beautiful spectacles of nature. The Aurora Borealis as seen in the Northern Hemisphere, is a rare occurrence caused by the dance of electrically charged particles in the atmosphere. The interplay of plasma released above the magnetic north pole leads to various hues of green, blue, yellow, red and violet to paint the sky.Last night was the first time since November 2017 that Briton were given the chance to see the swirling lights in person, and it could be a long time before we witness them again. Related articles BBC News: Northern lights expected in British skies tonight Northern Lights UK tonight: Where can you see the Aurora Borealis? Will the Northern Lights be visible tonight?Unfortunately the latest Aurora outlook is not looking good for the UK and the rest of Europe.According to the hourly Aurora Service forecast, the Northern Lights are currently soaring above the northern reaches of Canada and Greenland.Locals living int he northernmost parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland might stand a minimal chance of seeing the lights as well.Geomagnetic activity tracked by a team of scientists at Lancaster University’s Department of Physics, indicates the lights peaked last night around 6pm. Activity has since been in the lower levels but has not completely dropped off.Nathan Case, a physicist and AuroraWatch UK volunteer, said the residents of northern Scotland stood a “family good chance” of seeing the lights on Thursday.Mr Case advised that the lights would be best seen between 9pm and midnight, and urged all skygazers to stay on the lookout for clear skies.BBC weatherman Matt Taylor also said that “cloud cover permitting”, the Aurora Borealis would appear to viewers in Northern Ireland and Scotland. What are the Northern Lights? The Aurora Borealis is the interplay of charged particles ejected from the sun being thrust into the atmosphere by solar winds. When the particles begin to interact with Earth’s natural magnetic field, they start to have an interesting effect on the gases we breath everyday. Mr Taylor explained: “The sun is of course not a solid object – fluctuations on that, solar flares off that, so that sends highly charged particles right through the atmosphere towards us. “As it reaches out atmosphere it interacts with the oxygen and nitrogen molecules, and that is what causes the colours.“It get’s them excited basically, causes a little bit of a tickle and they shine different colours of light – the greens and yellows when it’s oxygen and the reds and purples when it’s nitrogen.”But the phenomenon is not just limited to Earth and scientists have recorded Aurora effects on the distant world of Saturn. Aurora borealis over UK, Northern Lights

01:10
Northern Lights, Aurora borealis lights up Britain's night sky Полярное сияние (северное сияние) — свечение (люминесценция) верхних слоёв атмосфер планет, обладающих магнитосферой, вследствие их взаимодействия с заряженными частицами солнечного ветра. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions.
[UK] Northern Lights X Big Bud Autoflower Window sill grow [Day 103]

Quick update on the autoflower grow, this seed was grown only on the window sill with about 3 or 4 hours of direct light a day. She should have finished a while ago but there are still alot of white hairs on the lower growth so I believe I will have to crop the top buds and leave the bottom ones going a few more days. Been watered with nothing but distilled water for a little over 14 days now.

Phenomenal view of the Northern Lights captured from someone's backyard

01:08
This breathtaking display of the Northern Lights was captured on Senja Island, Norway. The person who filmed it said they had no intention to record this, but eventually did as the light show was so impressive. The Northern Lights are also known as Aurora Borealis, which is the name given to the light displays that occur in the northern hemisphere. It is caused by electrically charged particles from the sun that collide with gases on the Earth's atmosphere. The auroras that occur in the southern hemisphere are called Southern Light or Aurora Australis. -------------------------------------------------- Follow BI UK on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1Nz3jG3 Follow BI UK On Facebook: http://bit.ly/1VWDkiy Read more: http://uk.businessinsider.com/?IR=C -------------------------------------------------- Business Insider UK is the largest business news site for British readers and viewers in the UK.
