This painting is available for purchase as a handmade oil painting reproduction from 1st-Art-Gallery.com - https://www.1st-art-gallery.com/Rembrandt-Van-Rijn/Christ-In-The-Storm-On-The-Sea-Of-Galilee.html The Storm on the Sea of Galilee is a masterpiece by the artist Rembrandt. I would recommend that you see this painting in person except for the fact that it was stolen in 1990 from the Isabel Stewart Gardener Museum in Boston. Today the painting is best known for the notoriety of the robbery. And that’s too bad. Because it overshadows the greatness of this work. It’s a large painting measuring over 5 feet high by 4 feet wide, and depicts the miracle of Jesus calming the sea, as related in the Book of Mark in the New Testament. As the story goes, Jesus and the twelve disciples are crossing the sea when their boat is caught in the most tremendous storm. The Sea of Galilee is actually just a large lake, however due to the large mountains surrounding the water, it’s vulnerable to unpredictable stormy conditions. The painting captures that moment when the boat, in the middle of the tempest, is foundering and just about to run aground. Some of the disciples are attempting to manage the boat while others are imploring Jesus to use his powers to end the storm. I always love these types of large involved paintings where you have all these tiny bits of action, and there’s no one better at this than Rembrandt. Our eye first goes to the brightest area of the painting, here at the mast where several apostles are trying to manage the sails. The eye eventually goes to this group of disciples surrounding Jesus rousing him from sleep, desperately begging him to act. Amidst the chaos Jesus remains calm. To his left one apostle is praying, a halo around his head. His faith is instructional; we don’t don’t ask for God’s help; we pray for God’s help. Behind him a man struggles with the tiller. And how about this frightened fellow. Look at the terror on his face. Then there’s this poor man, hanging over the side, retching. This one disciple is huddled, his back to the viewer. He has resigned himself to his fate. There are twelve apostles, and Jesus makes thirteen. But there are fourteen men on the boat. The odd man out, is this fellow, who bears a striking resemblance to Rembrandt himself. He's staring at us directly. What are we to read in this? Is the painter commenting on his own struggles with his faith? A painting of this size and complexity demands a composition up to the task. And in this Rembrandt does not fail. The composition has a beautiful architecture. The sky above and the waves below are shrouded in darkness, creating this portal, that directs our attention to the boat. Then there’s the shaft of the mast pulling us into the scene. The boat is tilted on the diagonal. Diagonally lines are extremely powerful elements in directing the eye. Furthermore, the boat hook, spinnaker pole and the tiller all point to Jesus. This is Rembrandt’s only seascape. But what an amazing singular execution. There is nothing this master couldn’t handle. Let us hope one of these days the painting is returned. Until then the museum has elected to keep an empty frame on the wall where the painting once hung. #stormontheseaofgalilee #rembrandt #rembrandtstormontheseaofgalilee #rembrandtoilpaintings #rembrandtartwork #rembrandtartanalysis https://youtu.be/k1yPxbHoHjk

Why did Rembrandt paint himself as a disciple of Christ? Why is he holding onto his hat and a rope on the boat? In this program we investigate the major challenges Rembrandt faced in his life and how he coped with the roughest times in life.

I made this video as part of a sermon on Luke 8:22-25, the storm on the Sea of Galilee. It was all-age worship and I wanted to do something different. It seemed to go down well, especially with the younger members. The music is Wagners Prelude to Flying Dutchman. The pictures were shoot at different times from our seaside house in Bacton.

This video was taken in December of 2012 in the midst of a rainy windy early morning in Galilee, Israel. The video is facing East looking over the Decapolis (or in modern geographical terms, En Gev. While I wouldn't call this is a storm, I would call it rainy and windy all of which contribute to a picture of what it must have been like for the disciples in a row boat going to the "other side." Luke 8:22. Or, at a period while Jesus calmed the storm or Peter and Jesus walking on water. Because of the nasty weather, I used a small handheld Sony HD cam with no tripod (which shows) and left my professional one in the dry.

So they set out, 23 and as they sailed he fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water and were in danger. 24 And they went and woke him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" And he awoke and rebuked the wind and the raging waves, and they ceased, and there was a calm. 25 He said to them, "Where is your faith?" And they were afraid, and they marveled, saying to one another, "Who then is this, that he commands even winds and water, and they obey him?" 26 Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. http://www.bible.is/ENGESV/Luke/8 Text Copyright: © 2001 Crossway and Good News Publishers All Rights Reserved. https://www.mormonchannel.org/watch/series/bible-videos The disciples' faith is tested before Jesus calms the stormy sea. Mark 4 :37-40 37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. 38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith? Put yourself in the boat with Jesus and his disciples. Pastor Heather Cowie reflects on the reactions to the storm as depicted in the painting by Rembrandt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Rembrandt_Christ_in_the_Storm_on_the_Lake_of_Galilee.jpg That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, "Let us go over to the other side." Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!" Mark 4:35-41

We boarded a boat in Tiberius and set out for a short trip on the lake. The sea of Galilee is the largest fresh water body of water in Israel. This morning it was relatively calm but it was easy to imagine what a storm on the water would be like. We stopped in the middle of the lake to hear a reading from Mark 6:47 where Jesus calms the disciples frightened by a storm to say "do not be afraid!" We shared our reflections and then prayed for those in our awareness that needed the calm of Jesus.

Have you ever wanted to visit the Sea of Galilee? Take a birds eye view of the fresh water lake Jesus spent the majority of his 3 years of ministry beside. This is where Jesus called 4 of his disciples among the fisherman (Matthew 4:18-20), calmed a storm (Matthew 8:23-27), walked on water (Mark 6:47-52), and fed 5,000 people with 5 loaves and 2 fish (Matthew 14:13-21). It is beautiful that we can have a tangible picture of where these miracles took place! Follow us: https://www.facebook.com/FIRMisrael https://twitter.com/FIRMisrael http://instagram.com/firmisrael

They wake Jesus and he simply tells the storm to stop! Retold using the clay animation technique, and narrated with a beautiful soundtrack, this video is sure to inspire in many ways.
