Breaking News - Stanley Gibbons sees losses more than double

03:14
AutoNews- Losses at the world’s oldest stamp business Stanley Gibbons more than doubled last year as it admitted that its future lies in the hands of the bank lending it money. The 162-year old company, which deals in stamps, coins, antiques and fine wine, posted trading losses of £8.8million in the year to March, up from £3.9million the previous year.It said this was a result of a decline in trading in all divisions, particularly investments and its rare coins business AH Baldwin. Revenues also fell from £59.1million to £42.5million.Chairman Harry Wilson said: ‘[…] the group is currently in default on its bank facilities and the Company remains dependent upon the bank's ongoing support.‘There can be no guarantee that the bank will provide facilities beyond 31 May 2018 and the Company is likely to require access to further liquidity in the intervening period.’But he added that in case of failed talks with the bank, the board had ‘reasonable grounds’ to believe that the group will finance itself by disposing of assets or from another finance provider.Shares fell 14 per cent, or 1.33p, to 8p in morning trading following the update. The group has seen its fortunes deteriorate after a string of failed historic acquisitions and a slowdown in the stamps and collectables market. It has been trying to offload non-core assets in a bid to raise cash such as its interiors business, which however it has failed to sell in full. The division made an operating loss of £5.2million in the year. The deterioration of Stanley Gibbon’s financial situation comes as it put itself up for sale in June as part of a review being led by finnCap, with private equity firm Disruptive Capital thought to be interested. However Disruptive later said it was not making an offer for the firm, despite having held discussions with it.

A stamp dealer is a company or an individual who deals in stamps and philatelic products. It also includes individuals who sell postage stamps for day to day use or revenue stamps for use on court documents. Stamp dealers who sell to stamp collectors and philatelists are of many kinds and their businesses range from small home operations to large international companies. Dealers may sell by mail order, at stamp fairs, at their own retail premises, through postal auctions or by sending packets of stamps on approval to collectors. Increasingly, dealers sell on internet auction sites like eBay or Delcampe. Dealers also vary in the type of material they handle, ranging from a general stock to highly specialised firms who only trade in particular countries or topical areas. Stamp catalogues principally evolved from stamp dealer's price lists, though today most stamp catalogues no longer represent a retail price list. The Stanley Gibbons catalogue is an exception that, in principle, still shows the price at which they would sell a particular stamp over the counter at their London shop, or by mail order, if they had it in stock and it was in the exact condition outlined in the notes at the start of the catalogue. In practice, many items are not in stock, or are not in the same condition, or the price at which the stamp is for sale differs for some other reason from that shown in the catalogue. The Gibbons catalogue was originally published as a penny price list in November 1865.[1] Unlike some other markets, such as stocks and shares, the majority of transactions in the philatelic or stamp market take time Postage stamp collecting began at the same time that stamps were first issued, and by 1860 thousands of collectors and stamp dealers were appearing around the world as this new study and hobby spread across Europe, European colonies, the United States and other parts of the world. The first postage stamp, the Penny Black, was issued by Britain in 1840 and pictured a young Queen Victoria. It was produced without perforations (imperforate) and consequently had to be cut from the sheet with scissors in order to be used. While unused examples of the Penny Black are quite scarce, used examples are quite common, and may be purchased for $20 to $200, depending upon condition. People started to collect stamps almost immediately. One of the earliest and most notable was John Edward Gray. In 1862 Gray stated that he "began to collect postage stamps shortly after the system was established and before it had become a rage".[3] As the hobby and study of stamps began to grow, stamp albums and stamp related literature began to surface, and by the early 1880s publishers like Stanley Gibbons made a business out of this advent. Children and teenagers were early collectors of stamps in the 1860s and 1870s. Many adults dismissed it as a childish pursuit but later many of those same collectors, as adults, began to systematically study the available postage stamps and publish books about them. Some stamps, such as the triangular issues of the Cape of Good Hope, have become legendary. Stamp collecting is a less popular hobby today than it was in the early 20th century, but today it is estimated that about 25 million people enjoy the hobby in the United States, while worldwide the estimated numbers of stamp collectors is around 200 million. Tens of thousands of stamp dealers supply them with stamps along with stamp albums, catalogues and other publications. There are also thousands of stamp (philatelic) clubs and organizations that provide them with the history and other aspects of stamps. Today, though the number of collectors is somewhat less, stamp collecting is still one of the world's most popular indoor hobbies.[4] In 2013 the Wall Street Journal estimated the global number of stamp collectors was around 60 million.[5] (note: source Wikipedia stamp collecting / Wikipedia stamp dealer find us on GOOGLE under: rare "stamp dealer california" stamp dealer san francisco california stamp dealers california "stamp dealers san francisco ca" stamp dealers marin county "stamp dealers contra costa ca" stamp dealers contra costa california http://youtu.be/94LlrKuJh58 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_collecting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stamp_dealer

Breaking News - Stanley Gibbons' investment arm goes into administration

08:04
Stanley Gibbons has been the respectable face of the highbrow world of philately – stamp collecting to you and me – since it was founded back in 1856, but its trustworthy reputation has come into question this week.On Tuesday the AIM-listed company confirmed its postage stamp investment business had gone into administration, leaving hundreds of investors who bought rare stamps with the promise of a 'buyback guarantee' in limbo. The Guernsey-based subsidiary is in possession of £12.6million worth of rare stamps but has about £54million of liabilities relating to the buyback guarantees, plus a further £11million in undefined liabilities and another £6.5million which it owes to the parent company. The scheme – which guaranteed customers at least 75 per cent of the book value of their stamps at the end of a given period – was stopped last year amid concerns about just how safe the guarantees were. With Stanley Gibbons revealing last month that it was in default on its bank facilities, investors will be hoping this isn’t the sign of things to come. Shares took a licking, down 26.7 per cent to 5.12p.Toilet roll maker Accrol Group had a bit of a stinker as well after it issued another profit warning and unveiled plans to raise funds through a heavily discounted share placing.Chairman Peter Cheung said the past few weeks had been 'extremely challenging' and the company – which supplies loo and kitchen roll to retailers including Aldi – expects to just about break even or post a slight underlying loss this year.Accrol has suspended its final dividend and axed 89 jobs to cut costs and try to keep it in the black. In the same announcement, the group said it plans to raise £18million through a placing of 36 million shares at 50p each – a steep discount to the stock’s mid-market price of 132p before suspension on 5 October. Unsurprisingly, Accrol shares plunged 71.3 per cent to 39.1p.Those two shockers aside, it’s not been a terrible week for those on the junior market, with the AIM All Share advancing 0.4 per cent, or 3.9 points, to 1,028.7.It was a similar performance from the blue chips this week as the FTSE 100 also added 0.4 per cent, or 26.5 points, to 7,407.2.E-commerce enabler blur Group was one of those lifting the junior market higher following a short but sweet statement on Thursday. The company – which has overhauled its board and raised fresh cash in recent months – told investors it is on an upward trajectory, with third quarter gross profit and revenue ahead of first-half levels.Management expects to see another quarter-on-quarter improvement in the final few months of the year as well, thanks to new customer wins and ‘encouraging’ repeat business. Shares jumped by a third to 6.14p.Bagir Group was another back in fashion this week, more than doubling in value to 2.47p as a major Chinese textile company took a majority stake and agreed to help the tailor win new business.Shangdong Ruyi Technology, one of China’s top 100 multi-national enterprises with listed subsidiaries in China, France and Japan, will invest US$16.5million for a 54 per cent holding. It’s paying 3.5p per share for its holding – a 155 per cent premium to the price before the shares were suspended on Monday but about the same as last December’s fundraising. Since then there have been two profit warnings due to a slowing flow of orders.Bagir boss Eran Itzhak said having Shandong as a key shareholder and partner would enable it to exploit the opportunity presented by its Ethiop1

Great Britain 1840-1980's Stamp Collectors Gold Mine! A rather fat little stock book stuffed with mint and used stamps, often with a semi- specialized bent (perhaps this is a specialized collectors storage / to be checked book), begins with an 1840 1d black (3 big margins, light pmk), then many 1841 1d red imperfs incl jumbo margins, 2d blue imperfs incl Maltese Cross pmks, pair, etc; Line engraved perforated 1d & 2d issues in need of study, surprisingly not much QV surface printed (although items to £300 seen) but masses of KEVII mint & used; KGV unsorted mint & used definitive issues incl mint multiples, also commems inc sets, wmk varieties etc; KEVIII booklet panes; KGVI incl coils, wmk varieties, duplicated high values with many selected for nice cancels; QEII similar incl duplicated high values. Collectables specialist Stanley Gibbons has been around since 1856 but its future independence, if not its very survival, must be in doubt.Full year results released last week revealed the extent of the mess left behind by previous management.Group turnover in the year to the end of March declined to £42.5 million from a (restated) £59.1 million the year before. The adjusted loss before tax widened to £11.1 million from £4.9 million, while reported loss before tax deepened to £30.2 million from £27.9 million. On the plus side, total borrowings reduced to £16.5 million from £21.9 million a year earlier, but shareholders would also have been alarmed to learn that there has been a further 48% fall in the net asset value, resulting from one-off restructuring costs, continued difficult trading conditions and the ongoing legacy of the group's investment contracts, which included guaranteed buy-backs.Due to the group's net assets being below £20 million, the group is currently in default on its banking facilities and remains dependent upon its bank's ongoing support.'There can be no guarantee that the bank will provide facilities beyond 31 May 2018 and the company is likely to require access to further liquidity in the intervening period,' last Monday's statement said.Like another fondly remembered name from our childhood, Hornby, the famous business has gone seriously off the tracks this decade.Arguably, it all started to go wrong when the previous management decided to leverage the Stanley Gibbons name and set up an electronic platform to rival that of eBay.This was a good idea, but the execution was lousy.Well, look at this page on eBay, which has a copy of the superhero comic Flash up for offer at a cool $1.5 million. No one could blame Stanley Gibbons for wanting to get a share of that kind of business, but the old management soon found itself out of its depth when it came to setting up a robust e-commerce trading platform. The online collectables business, The Marketplace, launched in 2015, was an 'ill-conceived, badly managed project which was allowed to severely over-run budgeted expenditure,' according to Harry Wilson, who took over as chairman of Stanley Gibbons in May 2016 and wasted little time in moving the group's headquarters from the cosy backwater of Jersey to London.Chief executive Michael Hall and chief financial officer Donal Duff stepped down from the board as a result of the geographical shift.Whether the move from the Channel Islands to the mainland was just a fig leaf to spare the blushes of the former management is not known but it is possible to draw some conclusions from Wilson's subsequent comments. The twin acquisitions of the fine wine and antiques trader Noble Investments and the art and furniture specialist Mallett were 'poorly managed' according to Wilson.'[The acquisitions] failed to instill a cohesive, UK-based management structure with adequate challenge and competition for capital,' Wilson said a year ago when the can of worms at Stanley Gibbons was opened a bit wider with the release of fiscal 2016's full-year results.Wilson said the firms were not properly integrated, a drain on investment and left the business in too much debt.In an era when interest rates have been at their lowest levels since records began, alternative investments have boomed in popularity; as a world leader in stamps and other collectables, Stanley Gibbons should have benefited from that boom.Instead, it was brought to its knees, prompting1

A WONDERFUL OLDE TYME COLLECTION of British Empire (no GB) and word-wide stamps spanning the 1850's to the 1930's (mostly 19th Century issues) arranged by country on many 100's of old "Rapkin" album pages housed in a large special box with leather strapping (dated inside "1951") and rich in old stamps which must catalogue many £100,000s! From a time when it was possible to find lots of early & classic issues but there was much less information about postmarks, watermarks, plate flaws and the many other things which excite the modern collector! A full Antigua to Wurttemberg range with so many 'jam- packed' displays of old stamps it's difficult to suggest highlights but we do see early classics from Argentina, Australia & all the States (New Sth Wales from Sydney View imperfs, etc), Brazil, Canada & all her Provinces (such as Newfoundland from 1860 6d orange- vermilion, P.E.I. from SG 1,etc - plus plenty of 19th Century Canada), Cape of Good Hope triangulars (17), Ceylon imperfs, Egypt from GB 'used in', France & some colonies, Gambia imperf Cameo's, the German States, India from 1854 imperfs, the Italian states, Netherlands from the 1854 imperfs (incl 5c mint), New Zealand from the imperf Chalons, Norway from 1855 imperf, Persia from Lion classics, St Helena early surcharges, Swiss imperfs, USA with masses of 19th Century - THIS BARELY 'SCRATCHES THE SURFACE' of this incredible old collection which lesser auctions would probably divide into 100's of smaller lots! 6 Postage Stamps from Guinea-Bissau: Locomotives

00:38
1989 philatelic series with locomotives. Beautiful stamps. Stamp collecting is the collecting of postage stamps and related objects. It is related to philately which is the study of stamps. It has been one of the world's most popular hobbies since the late nineteenth century with the rapid growth of the postal service.[1] Stamp collecting proved to be an almost perfect hobby for collectors because there was a never ending stream of new stamps as each country sought to advertise its distinctiveness through its stamps. Stamp collecting is generally accepted as one of the areas that make up the wider subject of philately, which is the study of stamps. A philatelist may, but does not have to, collect stamps. It is not uncommon for the term philatelist to be used to mean a stamp collector. Many casual stamp collectors accumulate stamps for sheer enjoyment and relaxation without worrying about the tiny details. The creation of a large or comprehensive collection, however, generally requires some philatelic knowledge and will usually contain areas of philatelic studies. Postage stamps are often collected for their historical value and geographical aspects and also for the many subjects depicted on them, ranging from ships, horses, and birds to kings, queens and presidents.[2] Stamp collectors are an important source of income for some countries who create limited runs of elaborate stamps designed mainly to be bought by stamp collectors. The stamps produced by these countries may exceed their postal needs, but may also feature attractive topical designs that many collectors desire. It has been suggested that John Bourke, Receiver General of Stamp Dues in Ireland was the first collector. In 1774 he assembled a book of the existing embossed revenue stamps, ranging in value from 6 pounds to half a penny, as well as the hand stamped charge marks that were used with them. His collection is preserved in Dublin.[3] Postage stamp collecting began at the same time that stamps were first issued, and by 1860 thousands of collectors and stamp dealers were appearing around the world as this new study and hobby spread across Europe, European colonies, the United States and other parts of the world. In 1862, Gray stated that he "began to collect postage stamps shortly after the system was established and before it had become a rage".[4] As the hobby and study of stamps began to grow, stamp albums and stamp related literature began to surface, and by the early 1880s publishers like Stanley Gibbons made a business out of this advent. Stamp collecting is a less popular hobby in the early 21st century than it was a hundred years ago. In 2013, the Wall Street Journal estimated the global number of stamp collectors was around 60 million.[5] Tens of thousands of stamp dealers supply them with stamps along with stamp albums, catalogues and other publications. There are also thousands of stamp (philatelic) clubs and organizations that provide them with the history and other aspects of stamps. Today, though the number of collectors is somewhat less, stamp collecting is still one of the world's most popular indoor hobbies. Stamp beautiful.

How to tell if your stamp collection is worth anything?

03:43
I've tried listing on eBay, each stamp and realized that it's very difficult to price and valuate your stamp collection unless you've really spent a lot of time learning all the variables. My advice on how to answer the question "Are my stamps worth anything?" Take it to a stamp collector who know's his stuff. That really is the best way, but that being said it does take some time and they may charge a fee, or charge a fee and then offer to purchase your collection and absorb the fee.
