Collecting Seashells & Learning Shell Names at Sanibel Island, FL - Seashell capital of the world!
Visit Sanibel Island, FL with us! Learn seashell names and look at our shell collection! Tell us if you go shelling and which seashell is your favorite! Sanibel Island, Florida is the shell capital of the world and definitely deserves that title. The most amazing shells can be found there. Plus the water is warm, the beaches aren't crowded and the waves are small. We always have a great day with family and friends soaking up the sun (make sure to wear sunscreen!) and shell hunting. When going to Sanibel, we always pack lunch, bring an umbrella for shade and our new favorite beach toy is a pool raft. The beach is shallow and the waves are small so floating around in the ocean on a raft is perfect! A couple shovels, little beach buckets, towels, lots of sunscreen, a rolling beach cart and you are all set! Great summer activity for the whole family! Or therapeutic to walk along the shore and look for sea shells by yourself. :) Most important tip is to not take anything that has something lining in it. Usually the shells are empty but sometimes you will find a FL fighting conch with something lining in the shell and we just leave those where they are. A couple times we have found sand dollars but they are still living so we don't take them. When they are alive, the sand dollars are grey in color as opposed to white how we always see them in stores. We have visited Sanibel Island quite a few times and always go shelling for beautiful shells. We go looking for sea shells in the Summer and in the Fall as the weather is always beautiful in FL. In our shell collection, we have turkey wings, shark eyes, flyspeck ceriths, Florida fighting conch shells, lots of little tiny shells, alphabet cones, Atlantic giant cockles, apple murex, rose murex, lightning whelk, slipper snail sea shells, scallop shells, lettered olives and some seashells that we aren't sure what they are called. Hope you had fun at Sanibel beach with us and going shelling! Hope you go shell hunting too! Tell us your favorite shell. Was it a small shell? A big seashell? Pink? Orange? Brown? Love to hear from you! Please subscribe to my channel: http://www.youtube.com/SillyAvacadoTime?sub_confirmation=1 Music from Jukedeck - create your own at http://jukedeck.com

Sea Shells
A sea shell is a hard, protective outer layer created by an animal that lives in the sea. The shell is part of the body of the animal. Empty seashells are often found washed up on beaches by beachcombers. The term seashell usually refers to the exoskeleton of an invertebrate which is an animal without a backbone. Most shells that are found on beaches are the shells of marine mollusks, partly because many of these shells endure better than other seashells. Seashells have been used by humans for many different purposes throughout history and pre-history. Seashells are commonly found in beach drift, which is deposited along strandlines on beaches by the waves and the tides. Shells are very often washed up onto a beach empty and clean, the animal having already died, and the soft parts having rotted away or having been eaten by either predators or scavengers. Bivalves are often the most common seashells that wash up on large sandy beaches or in sheltered lagoons. They can sometimes be extremely numerous. Very often the two valves become separated. There are more than 15,000 species of bivalves that live in both marine and freshwater. Examples of bivalves include clams, scallops, mussels, and oysters. The majority of bivalves consist of two identical shells that are held together by a flexible hinge. The animal's body is held protectively inside these two shells. Bivalves that do not have two shells either have one shell or they lack a shell altogether. The shells are made of calcium carbonate and are formed in layers by secretions from the mantle. Bivalves are mostly filter feeders; through their gills, they draw in water, in which is trapped tiny food particles. Some bivalves have eyes and an open circulatory system. Bivalves are used all over the world as food and as a source of pearls. Seashells have been used as a medium of exchange in various places, including many Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean islands, also in North America, Africa and the Caribbean. Seashells have often been used as tools, because of their strength and the variety of their shapes. Giant clams have been used as bowls, and when big enough, even as bathtubs and baptismal fonts. Many different species of bivalves have been used as scrapers, blades, clasps, and other such tools, due to their shape. Some marine gastropods have been used for oil lamps, the oil being poured in the aperture of the shell, and the siphonal canal serving as a holder for the wick. Because seashells are in some areas a readily available bulk source of calcium carbonate, shells such as oyster shells are sometimes used as soil conditioners in horticulture. The shells are broken or ground into small pieces in order to have the desired effect of raising the pH and increasing the calcium content in the soil. Sea Shells (1956)
Balham, London. M/S of a dining room with simplistic decor and furniture; Millicent Rich enters and places a large sea fan on the sideboard. C/U of the fan as commentator talks of the harvest of the sea bed that is finding a place in contemporary design; Millicent is Europe's only woman importer of shells. We then see Millicent in a living room; she sits on a simple couch and examines a large starfish; several exotic shells are spread out on the table before her. Commentator talks of the shells making a striking contrast to the right-angled shape of modern furniture by Terence Conran - which is presumably what we see here. She picks up a large conch shell and turns it over in her hands, then a huge Spider shell from Africa. M/S of a three Murex shells and an African bust on a sideboard. Millicent walks back into the dining room with a bowl of shells. She places a Green Ear shell, a Baby Giant Clam and a Scorpion Shell on the table; then picks up various other exotic shells from the bowl and turns them over in her hands. Picking up a small shell with a green centre, she places it on her finger to show it could be made into a ring. M/S of Millicent shows she is wearing some shells as earrings; C/U of these Episcopal Mitre shells. C/U of the bowl of shells. Note: on file are cameraman's notes and a small news cutting about Millicent. FILM ID:41.1 A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ. EXPLORE OUR ONLINE CHANNEL, BRITISH PATHÉ TV. 'Treasures Of The Ocean' - Canvas Painting using Sea shells and Corn Silk | Acrylic |
Ocean has always been the deepest and the most ligitimate metaphor I use to express about my personality. You really can't tell if the ocean is just grey by looking at it from the shore or if it's truly got treasures deep unless you're genuinely wanting to swim down in saline, not fearing the sharks and believing your intuitions to be true. All of us are like that somewhere, are we not? 🌊😄 . . Coming to the video, I have used small and medium sized shells and Sweet Corn Silk (corn hair) to create the texture and stamped on fingers dipped in acrylic colours - care free-on my virtually real, white, A3 dimensioned canvas sea bed. I call it - 'Treasures Of the Ocean'. . . Let me know how you like it in the comments section.

How to find seashells in Jamaica #findseashells #seashells
I heard the best time to go to Burwood Beach in Jamaica to find shells is right after a big storm. Searching for seashells along a sun-lined, sandy beach is a coastal pastime enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Even the most avid seashell collectors, however, have trouble finding large, intact gems straight from the ocean floor. With a little knowledge and a lot of patience, though, you can unearth some of the best shells your collection has seen. Instructions 1 Grab your plastic bag and head to the beach's shoreline. Walk along the point where the shore stops, picking up and bagging any shells you find. 2 Observe areas that seem to be pushing debris -- seaweed, trash, rocks or seashells -- toward the shore. Head to that area and wait for the tide to come in. Pick up any shells that wash up. 3 Walk a little deeper into the water to see what lies on the bottom of the ocean floor, going in only about ankle deep. This will allow you to grab shells you see before they're picked up by the motion of the tide. Act quickly if you see a shell, though, so you can catch it before the tide comes in. 4 Reach to the bottom when the water is muddy or murky, or when the reflection is too bright to see to the bottom. Feel for foreign objects. If you feel a lot of different textures, there's a good chance they may be rocks and seashells. Sweep your hand along a few inches of the ocean floor, scooping up what you come in contact with. 5 Go through the items you've grabbed. Finding seashells of any type, small or large, may indicate the presence of more below. If you find only small, pebble-like rocks and lots of sand, move on to a different area of the beach. 6 Test various spots in the shoreline, sticking your foot a few inches into the water not too far from where the shore ends. See if many items pass under your foot, aside from sand, when the tide comes in. If you have seashells or rocks trapped just underneath the sand below your foot, the current from the shoreline activity will forcefully try to pull them toward the beach. 7 Look around the beach, keeping an eye out for children who may also be collecting seashells. Move to areas closer to them where shells may be abundant. Just don't completely invade their territory or take shells that you see others reaching for. Beachside etiquette is especially important when it comes to children. 8 Visit out-of-the-way or deserted areas of the beach, which may be untapped resources for shells. 9 Search the various crevices and cracks of any rock formations that extend into the ocean. Shells can become trapped in these holes when the current breaks on the rocks. Shells may also be hidden in seaweed or in other items that wash ashore. Coil Rope Around A Mason Jar, Then Glue On Small Seashells For A Beautiful Nautical Candle
If I had to pick my ideal home decoration, I would definitely choose candles. Not only do candles give rooms a certain, soothing glow, but they release pleasant aromas into the air around them. Gorgeous candle jars can also spruce up your household’s decor or mark the celebration of special holidays. If you are looking for a creative way to adorn your living space, consider making one of these stunning nautical candles! These ocean-inspired crafts are not only incredibly simple to make, but they will remind you of sunny days spent out on the sand. Check out the material list and craft instructions below. Then, watch the video for step-by-step directions. Materials: Mason jar jute rope scissors hot glue gun and glue sticks striped scrapbook paper (for anchor cutouts) strings of pearl beads craft sand small, white candle small seashells dried starfish Directions: Cut a piece of rope that will fit around the rim of a Mason jar, then hot glue it into place. Cut a second, longer piece of rope and loop it twice through the original piece. Tie a knot and allow the rest of the rope to dangle. Loop the dangling rope around the rim and glue it into place. Lace the cutout of an anchor (or another popular nautical symbol) through the rope before gluing down. Continue looping the second rope strand around the jar, thickly coiling it near the base. Keep the rope in place using the hot glue gun. Hot glue small seashells around the coiled section of rope. Glue the beaded string of pearls along the diagonal rope strand. Fill the jar with craft sand and drop a handful of small seashells inside. Bury a small, white candle halfway in the sand. Consider further decorating the jar by gluing starfish or extra pearls to the glass. If you love this beach-themed, DIY project, please SHARE with your friends and family on Facebook!

How to Drill Holes in Seashells.....my first attempt!
How to drill holes in seashells. I tried both methods, dry on the stationary dremel, with a diamond drill bit, (after watching the dremel video) and wet with the hand held attachment and holding the shell. The wet version I liked the best it was easier for me, I felt I had better leverage with the hand held attachment. The dry version I tried, I saw flames....that frightened me so I don't really recommend that way....for the wet version, I used a big container, fill it up with water, mark where you want to drill, get shell wet, DO NOT SUBMERGE HAND HELD ATTACHMENT INTO WATER. just the tip of the the diamond drill bit is enough. I first go in at a 90 degree angle, (a slight slant), then straight on.....if shell is really hard, I pulse it up and down a bit. That seems to work really quickly and I love it.
