The Great Gatsby Party: Your Definitive Fashion Guide

02:48
So you were invited to a Great Gatsby party – that's great! But you open your closet and realize you have no idea how to dress for it. That's... not so great. Never fear! As always, we've got your back on this one. The Twenties were all about sparkle and flair. Jazz was the cultural language of the decade, and this was reflected in the fashion world. Women, finding new social freedoms, wore free-flowing and revealing cocktail dresses. These “flapper dresses” were often bejeweled from head to toe. Today, you can find modern flapper dresses by major designers! Check out our collection of Great Gatsby dresses here: http://picvpic.com/flapper-dress/shop... At a Great Gatsby Party, your shoes should speak as loud as your dress. Go with a classy and dignified pair of Mary Janes, or an extravagant strap heel. You should try to stay within a ritzy color scheme. Think gold, silver, or black. Men might have a little easier time dressing for a Great Gatsby party. As you probably expected, in the Roaring Twenties men wore suits. And only suits. A black, cream, or dark blue suit is a safe bet. If you’re feeling a little more experimental, try a dark red, light blue, or even a green suit. Shop incredible Great Gatsby costume ideas here: http://picvpic.com/products?search=suit What should both men and women never show their face at a Great Gatsby party without? A hat! Hats were ubiquitous in the Jazz Age, and no one would dare attend a party, mush less leave their house, without their hat. Men should always go with a bowler, a fedora, or a straw hat. Just be careful with the fedora – it can very easily ruin an otherwise-ok outfit. As for women, well they have a lot of options for headgear. Check out our full analysis here: http://picvpic.com/fashion101/2015/gr... Make sure your Great Gatsby dress or Great Gatsby costume looks best at the party! And make sure to like this video and subscribe to our channel. Stay tuned in so you don’t miss a thing!

All of the men were always dressed to perfection. Top hats and three piece suits were a must. This hairstyle is a longer layered haircut. You will need to have an understanding of graduation and square shape layering. You will also need to understand the concept of a visual blend vs. a technical blend. Most recently actors such as Sean Penn and Ryan Gosling have worn this hairstyle in the movie Gangster Squad which represents the 1920's time period

Roaring Twenties: Jack Hylton & His Orch - I Must Have That Man, 1929

03:14
Jack Hylton and His Orchestra – I Must Have That Man, Fox-Trot from he Broadway production “Blackbirds Of 1928” (Fields – McHugh) with Vocal Refrain (by Sam Browne), HMV 1929 (UK) NOTE: "Blackbirds Of 1928" was a hit Broadway musical revue that starred Adelaide Hall and Bill Bojangles Robinson, with music by Jimmy McHugh and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. It contained the hit songs "Diga Diga Do", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" and "I Must Have That Man" all sung by Adelaide Hall. The show had been designed to present the comedienne Florence Mills after the sensational success of her all-black revue “Blackbirds” in London, in 1926. However in 1927, Florence Mills died of appendicitis and Adelaide Hall was asked to replace her. The Blackbirds of 1928 started its life as a floorshow at Les Ambassadeurs Club on 57th Street, New York, the orchestra was conducted by the popular New York band leader Roger Wolfe Kahn. The show was a great hit and it was taken as a tryout to Atlantic City. There, it achieved a great success again and in May 1928 it was opened at the Liberty Theatre in Broadway. It ran for 518 performances, becoming the longest running all-black show on Broadway. It was directed by producer Lew Leslie and the orchestra, called the Famous Blackbirds Orchestra was conducted by Felix Weir. In 1929 the Broadway production opened at the Moulin Rouge in Paris, where it became the hit of the season. In Paris it ran for three months before returning to the USA for an American road tour. Here, one of immortal hits from that revue is played by enormously popular British dance band Jack Hylton with the refrain sung by male (!) performer (Sam Browne). During the Jazz Age it was however quite a common practice when the song, written originally for the stage female performer, was released later on records as a dance hit and with not much concern about either male or female performer. And this is a case. Such recordings are today very much searched for by LGTB activists and often presented in anthologies as examples of the “gay culture” of the 1920s or 1930s – while the reason of that somewhat sensational “sexual ambiguity” in such performances is rather simple and not related to sexual likes of the performer. Of course, a slideshow to such presentation cant’ be otherwise than photographs of several most “wanted” men of the 1920s/30s!

5 Cool Dance Moves from the 1920s

03:06
5 Rare films with some cool dance moves from the 1920s - the Black Bottom, Waltz, Salsa, Charleston and Foxtrot - popular dance styles in the Jazz Age. The roaring twenties! The age of the flapper! The Black Bottom - became popular in the 1920s, which could be danced solo or as a couple, or, as in this case, in a group. Waltz - The waltz actually goes back to around 1770, but enjoyed a renewed period of popularity in the 1920's. Salsa - The salsa originated in New York but has clear influences from Latin America, incorporating dance styles from Cuba, Colombia and Puerto Rico. The Charleston is named after Charleston, South Carolina. The rhythm craze was started by a broadway show tune called The Charleston. The Foxtrot - you'll note the smoothness of this dance. Usually danced to big band music. It is similar to the waltz, except in a 4 4 time signature. Originated in the 1910s, but was most popular in the 1930s. Roaring 20s - Al Lentz's Orch. - Sam, the Old Accordion Man 1927

02:49
Al Lentz and His Orchestra, with Vocal Chorus by Al Lentz -- Sam, The Old Accordion Man (W.Donaldson), Columbia 1927 (USA) NOTE: To my regret, I could not find any photo of Al Lentz's dance orchestra nor any substantial information about that very good American dance band. For sure, they were issuing some of the best selling dance records in the Roaring Twenties, yet Al Lentz in person had been forever trapped within the pits of oblivion, as it seems. Not a single information about him is available in the internet sources. Therefore, all we can do is enjoy his dance pieces, among which "Sam, the Old Accordion Man" belongs to the best. See another hot recording made by them in 1927 http://youtu.be/OF-YhiOZXNc One more important note: due to a copyright problem with the photo materials, I had to suspend temporarily the availability of my latest clip: Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" by Hal Kemp's Orchestra. As soon as I make another version, it'll be back in YT. 04:00
The official music video for "Our Apartment" off 'We Don't Have Each Other' - the debut album from Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties. OUT NOW on Hopeless Records! ► Get it on iTunes: http://smarturl.it/wedonthaveeachother --- Lyrics: I pictured our apartment in the middle of Brooklyn and I pictured the bedroom and how the floor's still a mess. I pictured your office in mid-town Manhattan. I pictured you walking in. I bet you're late again, but your make-up's straight and you're smiling. It's just like it's always been. I had lunch with your sister and she told me it's over, that you're calling your lawyers, that you're not coming back. She says that she's sorry. Your whole family likes me. She don't know what you're thinking but she knows that it's bad. So, I walked back home, turned the shower on. I let the washing machine turn the water cold. I'll read it over again—the lines of the note you left. I keep hoping that I'll forget, that the words changed while I slept but I've got my doubts. You're staying at your parents house and I'm sleeping on the couch. I can't stand our bed without you. I found enough of your hairpins to build you a monument, a statue to loneliness. Breathe it in. Let it go. I caved a piece of the drywall in. I'm replaying the argument. I'm icing my swollen fist. It's a lie and this isn't a home, no, no. I'm just skin and bones. I broke my cell phone cause it won't fucking tell me when you're coming home. --- Follow Aaron West on Twitter: @thisisaaronwest Follow Aaron West on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties Subscribe for more great videos: http://hopel.es/HRYouTube Follow Hopeless Records on Twitter: @HopelessRecords http://www.aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties.com http://hopelessrecords.com

Roaring Twenties: Doin' the Raccoon - The Knickerbockers, 1928

03:08
Doin’ the Raccoon, Fox-Trot (Coots-Klages) –The Knickerbockers (Ben Selvin’s Orchestra) with Vocal Refrain, Columbia 1928 (USA) NOTE: The first American generation after the Great War were the young men, who still were children in 1910s, but in the mid- or the late 1920s they already were the University students. In many ways, they demonstrated disapproval to their parents or their elder brothers, whom they considered as mentally poisoned by the War. Playing jazz, driving speedo automobiles or motorcycles, plus-fours or baggy men's pants, short haircut, knee-long skirts and smoking cigarettes (by the women), as well as the collegiate “rah-rah” talk were their visible and audible marks of distinction. In their clothing, the raccoon coats – floor length, no less – were all the rage for both sexes. Also: many young men of the time wore the raggedy hats pulled low over their eyes or set at a jaunty angle - a “gangsta” look was highly esteemed in those circles... Even their sock made shift from function to fashion: fathers sported only black, brown or white socks, while their “raccoon style” sons bought socks with geometric patterns to match their vests, ties and handkerchiefs (- which climbed from their dungeons in the jacket’s pocket up in the breast pocket, where they shone with bright colors and modern patterns). While women’s clothes were getting more and more scanty, men’s were going the other way: the floppy pants called the “Oxford bags” with their cuffs 24-iches across were obligatory for the good looking man… All those details were supposed to emphasize the flippancy, the airness and the arrogance of the bearer, especially when he or she happened to be the student of one of the Ivy League East Coast universities. Certainly, it took big money and a lot of time to keep up with the “swanky look” in those times… ab-so-lute-ly!

'We Don't Have Each Other' - the debut album from Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties - is out now on Hopeless Records! ► Get it on iTunes: http://smarturl.it/wedonthaveeachother --- Lyrics: Hey, Dianne, could you pick up the phone? I know that you're listening. Baby, I know that you're home and I know where I went wrong. Don't you leave me alone. Could you pick up the phone? I'm lost at a truck stop somewhere in the South. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm figuring it out. I locked myself in this phone booth; read you the number aloud. Now, I'm waiting it out. If I lay here long enough, maybe the bugs will eat me whole. If I stay here long enough maybe the night could take me home. I won't let go, even if you say so. No, I won't let go. Hey, Dianne, I've been trying to quit. I went from a pack and a half a day to this e-cigarette bullshit. It don't give me what I want but it stops them coughing fits. Oh, I know how you hate it. Hey, Dianne, I know I fucked up. It's just when we lost the baby, I kind of shut off. I know I never listened. I wasn't there for you enough. I'm a fuck up. I had a dream I flew back North and the plane went down before we hit New York. You didn't come to the funeral. I hope you'd come to the funeral. --- Follow Aaron West on Twitter: @thisisaaronwest Follow Aaron West on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties Subscribe for more great videos: http://hopel.es/HRYouTube Follow Hopeless Records on Twitter: @HopelessRecords http://www.aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties.com http://hopelessrecords.com

Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties - Grapefruit

04:13
'We Don't Have Each Other' - the debut album from Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties - is out now on Hopeless Records! ► Get it on iTunes: http://smarturl.it/wedonthaveeachother --- Lyrics: Hey, Holy Ghost, why'd you leave me? Where'd you go? I know we ain't spoke in so long, but I've gotta know if I'm alone. If I start drinking, I'm gonna be the town drunk. You always said I should lighten up, so I'm gonna lighten up. I'm gonna lighten up. So long. I'm sorry that I wasn't who you want. If I can't make you happy, I'm no good for anyone. So long. I'm sorry that I was who you you'd want. If I cant make you love me... I shut you out after the funeral, mired in doubt. You thought a family would help. I was struggling. You could tell. When we got the news that you were pregnant we painted a room pink and orange like a grapefruit. I know how bad you wanted this too. I know it killed you. In all my dreams, I'm in the house that I grew up in. I'm trying to be half the man I know my dad is, or was. I see me as a father looking over a daughter who grew up to be just like you and now that's just a thread I can't hold onto. It's just an open wound. Hey, Holy Ghost, why'd you leave me? Where'd you go? Right when I fucking need you, I'm all alone. I'm all alone. So, I'll start drinking. Yea, I'll be the town drunk. I'll be a burden on everyone. --- Follow Aaron West on Twitter: @thisisaaronwest Follow Aaron West on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties Subscribe for more great videos: http://hopel.es/HRYouTube Follow Hopeless Records on Twitter: @HopelessRecords http://www.aaronwestandtheroaringtwenties.com http://hopelessrecords.com
