Saving Endangered Sea Turtle from Entangled Fishing Line - Hawaii 11.15.11

08:44
We deeply love and respect sea life and its natural cycles. Under normal circumstance we would never touch a sea turtle but this was anything but normal for the turtle. We came across this Green Sea Turtle at the bottom of the ocean while snorkeling. She was lethargic and barley moving. Upon closer look, it was noticeable that she was not moving her front flippers. She hovered near us for 30 minutes. We thought she was dying.... and she was. This beautiful Honu had become entangled in a fishing line that was wrapped tightly, multiple times around her neck and both of her front flippers making it impossible for her to move them or inhale a full breath of air. If she moved her front flippers, the fishing line would act as a noose, further tightening around her neck. She was in a life or death situation. Due to the extenuating circumstances and understanding that minutes would mean life or death for this precious Honu, human instinct to save the life of another in need, set in. We do not recommend or condone handling an endangered sea turtle. But in this unique set of circumstances, it felt like the right and only choice. She was brought closer to shore, where we were able to untangle her promptly, gently and release her safely back into the sea. Each time we cut one layer that was strangling her, she would reach her head above the water and take a huge gasp of air and look at us. When her flippers were free, she immediately began moving them with a felt sense of relief. It is illegal to kill, capture or harass sea turtles. All six species of sea turtles in the US are protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Royalty Free Music: "The Lonely Smurfer" by Johnny Hawaii (http://johnnyhawaii.bandcamp.com/)"

9 Wild Animals That Saved Human Lives

08:27
You've probably heard a lot of stories of pets saving their owners. However, history knows many cases of wild animals saving people's lives! We usually think of wild animals as beautiful yet dangerous, but they can be also capable of compassion and understanding. Here're 9 fascinating stories about wild animals who saved humans from danger. Other videos you might like: 13 Tips on How to Survive Wild Animal Attacks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkFFq11j6dQ 10 Exotic Animals You Can Keep as Pets at Home https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqK4qRK0nRA& 13 Survival Hacks That Never Work in Real Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o90yH5_fMbY& TIMESTAMPS: The whale that protected a woman from a shark 0:22 The beavers that comforted a young boy 1:12 The beluga whale that rescued a diver 2:11 The lions that saved a kidnapped girl 2:55 A deer that scared away an attacker 3:47 The elephant that saved a girl from a tsunami 4:31 The gorilla that guarded a little boy 5:13 The bear that protected a man from a lion 6:24 The giant sea turtle that carried a woman on its back 7:12 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Humpback whales are extremely protective of their babies, always looking out for predators. So maybe it was simply a natural instinct for a whale to shield a helpless woman from a large, dangerous shark! - A boy had to spend the night outside. When he woke up the next morning, he was really surprised to see 3 wild beavers sleeping against him! The temperature had dropped below zero, so if it wasn't for them, the young boy would most probably have frozen to death. - One woman developed a cramp in her leg and found that she couldn't swim! The beluga whale in the tank noticed that something was wrong and grabbed the woman's leg, leading her to the surface and therefore saving her life. - Back in 2005, a terrifying event happened to a 12-year-old Ethiopian girl. She was walking home from school when 4 men abducted her. The police started looking for the girl right away, but they had almost no leads for over a week. Finally, they found the girl safe and sound in the company of 3 adult lions! - A young woman in Ohio was leaving a party at about 1 a.m. and decided to walk home on foot. An unknown man who grabbed her and hit her! He was just about to drag her into a field when he suddenly saw a deer who’d been woken up by the sounds of the woman struggling. This scared the man away, and he fled the scene immediately. - In 2004, the southwest coast of southern Thailand was hit by a horrifying tsunami. Among the people who tried to flee from the tsunami was an 8-year-old girl. An elephant carried her to higher ground on its back and protected her from the approaching waves. - A boy fell into a gorilla enclosure and passed out from a severe head injury. Jambo, one of the gorillas, instantly made it clear that the boy was protected, staying with him until zoo employees and medical workers arrived. - A mountain lion attacked a man. The man did his best to protect himself when the bear he'd been watching before suddenly attacked the lion. These 2 had a serious battle for some time until the lion fled as fast as it could. - In 1974, a 62-year-old woman found herself in a life-or-death situation when the ship she was on was wrecked. Nonetheless, she made it home alive — thanks to a giant sea turtle who came to her rescue! Sea Turtle with Straw up its Nostril - "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS

08:07
This is the original video! Filmed by Christine Figgener, marine biologist at Texas A&M University. ***WARNING: Graphic Content & Inappropiate/ Strong Language!*** This video shows graphically why plastic waste is detrimental to marine life, especially single-use plastics (such as straws, which are one of the most redundant items). This turtle suffers from an item that is human-made and used by most of us frequently. The research team around Christine Figgener (Texas A&M University) found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril and they removed it. SAY "NO" TO PLASTIC STRAWS, AND ANY KIND OF ONE-TIME USE PLASTIC ITEMS! If you would like to support our research and conservation efforts in Costa Rica, please think about donating to our GoFundMe Campaign http://gofundme.com/wuhvd6zj UPDATES The Plastic Pollution Coalition just launched their "No Straw" Campaign in collaboration with us. Take the No-Straw-Pledge and learn more: http://www.plasticpollutioncoalition.... ----- The Story behind the viral video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLN52... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4MPHb... OUR STORY: My research team found a male Olive Ridley sea turtle during an in-water research trip in Costa Rica. He had a 10-12 cm PLASTIC STRAW lodged in his nostril. After initially thinking that we are looking at a parasitic worm, and trying to remove it to identify it, we cut a small piece off to investigate further and finally identified what we were REALLY looking at. After a short debate about what we should do we removed it with the plier of a swiss army knife which was the only tool available on our small boat (not intended for overnight stays), since we were on the ocean, in a developing country, a few hours away from the coast and several hours away from any vet (probably days from any vet specialised in reptiles, not to mention sea turtles) and x-ray machines. Plus, we would have incurred a penalty (up to time in jail) on ourselves by removing the turtle since that is beyond our research permits. He did very obviously not enjoy the procedure very much, but we hope that he is now able to breath more freely. The blood from the shoulder is from a 6mm skin biopsy we took previously to this event for a genetic study (part of our permitted research), which usually doesn't bleed much, but which started bleeding while restraining the turtle. We disinfected the air passageway with iodine and kept the turtle for observation before releasing him back into the wild. The bleeding stopped pretty much immediately after the removal of the straw, and when we released him, he swam happily away. The turtle very likely swallowed the straw while ingesting other food items and then either expelled the straw together with the redundant sea water through her nostrils, or regurgitated the straw and it ended up in the wrong passageway. The nasal cavity of sea turtles is connected directly to the palate (roof of the mouth) by a long nasopharyngeal duct. If You Ever See This on the Beach, Cry for Help!

08:29
How do you recognize something that you can touch and something you have to run away from as fast as possible? Here is a list of the most dangerous sea creatures you can meet and how to recognize them! There are so many different species living in the ocean! Some of them are beautiful, some are deadly, and some are both. TIMESTAMPS Fire Coral 0:40 Flower Urchin 1:20 Cone Snail 1:50 Portuguese Man-of-War 2:32 Snea snakes 3:54 Lionfish 4:51 Chironex 5:39 Surgeonfish 6:15 Indonesian needlefish 6:59 Triggerfish 7:34 SUMMARY - Fire Coral. These small organisms can sting, and the effect can be not very serious and it can be quite bad. A stung person may have severe pains, feel nauseated and even vomit, which is not the best thing to do when you are underwater. - Flower Urchin is both very beautiful and very deadly. It contains toxins that can cause anaphylactic shock, convulsions and finally death. You can get poisoned if you step on it when you are in the sea or the ocean. - Scientists say that just one drop of the cone snail’s poison is enough to kill 20 people! Just one drop! - The most mind-blowing fact about Man-of-War is that technically we should call it Men-of-War, and refer to it not as «it», but «they», and here is why: it’s an animal that is made up of a colony of organisms cooperating together. Man-of-war has tentacles that can be 30 feet long, which it uses to paralyze and kill fish and other small creatures. - Sea snakes are much more venomous than their land-living friends. As it turns out, they have to be like that because they hunt fish, so what they need to do is immobilize their prey very quickly not to let it escape. - Many people call the lionfish the most beautiful sea creature in the world. You can find them in the Caribbean and Eastern Atlantic. Lionfishes are not deadly — they do have a venom, but it’s not lethal. However, the pain you will experience if you get stung is so severe that people say you might wish you were dead. - Chironex doesn’t have any teeth, but it’s dangerous as hell. If a person gets stung, they will have excruciating pain, red inflammation in the stung area and heart dysfunction. - Surgeonfish are easily spooked, so you should be extra careful if you see one of them. Don’t make any unexpected fast moves. The good news is, surgeonfish are not aggressive unless, of course, you provoke them. - Indonesian needlefish live in tropical and subtropical waters of the oceans. They, as the name suggests, have a very sharp, needle-like beak, and they are especially dangerous when they hurl themselves out of the water. - Triggerfish is mostly friendly, but only until you are a threat to its nest. The most dangerous are females — if you approach its nest even accidentally, it will bite you. Thankfully, the bites aren’t poisonous, but triggerfish have extremely sharp teeth, so the injuries it can cause need serious medical attention. Endangered Species: Worth Saving from Extinction?

Species are going extinct at crazy high rates. Does it matter? TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. https://learn.kqed.org/topics/5 Species are going extinct at crazy high rates. Does it matter? Find out in this video. ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and investigates the research behind controversial and trending topics in the news. Hosted by Myles Bess. *NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY* SUBSCRIBE by clicking the RED BUTTON above. Follow us on Instagram @kqedabovethenoise What does it mean when a species goes extinct? A species goes extinct when there are no longer any more of that species left on earth. That species is gone forever aka extinct. What is the 6th mass extinction? Throughout earth’s history there have been five major mass extinction events-- where a large percentage of species died out. Scientists estimate that we are in the middle of the 6th mass extinction event right now, where species are dying out at 1,000 to 10,000 times baseline extinction rates. Why should we care if a species goes extinct? Moral and ethical arguments to try to prevent species extinction include reasons like all life has a right to be here, or that we owe it to our grandchildren to protect species so they can see them in the wild. Species also impact the ecosystems they are a part of; plants and animals depend on each other in an ecosystem for things like food and shelter, so if one species dies out, then that could affect other species in an ecosystem. For example sea otters live in kelp forests and eat sea urchins, and when they were hunted almost to extinction the sea urchin population increased and ate all the kelp-- destroying the kelp forest habitat. What are ecosystem services? Ecosystem services are the collective benefits we get from ecosystems. Ecosystems provide us with a lot of great things like natural resources and water, and are home to living things we depend on-- like insects that pollinate our crops and decomposers that get rid of our waste. Ecosystems are healthiest when they are the most biodiverse. Saving Endangered Sea Turtles

02:48
A hospital for rehab, research and release of one of Earth’s oldest living animals. More information on this story at . Additional content at http://www.insidescience.org/. (Inside Science TV) – Buckwheat, Mikey, Beaker, Barney, Alfalfa, Newman, Goober and Barnacle Bill are just a few of the sea turtles currently being treated at The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida, a landmark animal hospital dedicated to ensuring that sea turtles – some of the oldest animal species on Earth – survive and thrive in the face of extinction. Armed with three ambulances and a dedicated team of biologists, zoologists, veterinarians and staff, The Turtle Hospital treats up to 200 turtles a year, and since 1986, it has released 1500 back into the wild. The need for facilities like the Turtle Hospital is huge. Sea turtles have been around a long, long time: By some estimates, their ancestors date back over 100 million years. Unfortunately, modern species of sea turtles haven’t had it easy. All six sea turtle species in US waters are listed under the Endangered Species Act, and worldwide, sea turtle populations have fallen since last generation. The dangers facing the turtles are numerous, according to Bette Zirkelbach, a biologist at the hospital. “The biggest threat is human impact,” she said, “and that varies from pollution, to trash in our water, fishing line entanglement, [and] boat strikes.” And tackling sea turtles’ complex healthcare needs requires a surprisingly sophisticated battery of tools. "We do blood transfusions, we give the turtles IV nutrition, we do physical therapy—things you might not think of with a sea turtle,” said Zirkelbach. Commonly, Turtle Hospital veterinarians have to address a disturbing trend: sea turtles’ eating of plastic debris, which has increased worldwide since 1985. Turtles mistake the bits of plastic for food – and in the case of “Barnacle Bill,” a 170-pound loggerhead sea turtle treated by the Turtle Hospital, the plastic builds up in their intestines, starving them unless it’s removed. When Barnacle Bill, was found floating, veterinarians used a bronchoscope to look inside his lungs and were able to clear plastic from his intestine. During the turtle's exam, the researchers also discovered that one of Barnacle Bill's lungs is smaller than the other one. Barnacle Bill will remain at the hospital until a permanent home at an aquarium or zoo can be found. Until then, veterinarians will add weights to Barnacle Bill's back to help him stay underwater. The Hospital also treats turtles suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a viral disease ravaging sea turtle populations worldwide. It’s thought that small leeches stuck to the turtles pass along a virus similar to the human herpes virus. If an infection takes hold, the virus causes tumors to grow all over the turtles’ bodies – large enough to affect their sight, swimming, and snacking. The problem hits close to home: “This is a virus that affects over 50 percent of the green sea turtle population,” said Zirkelbach, including ones in Florida. To treat cases of fibropapillomatosis in turtles like “Osborne,” a recently captured green sea turtle, veterinarians with the Turtle Hospital use tools like laser scalpels to remove fibropapilloma tumors. This is especially important for Osborne, who suffered from tumors around his eyes. Doctors are hopeful that the procedure will save Osborne’s eyesight. “We’re doing a lot of critical care," said Zirkelbach."A lot of state of the art medical care, we do blood transfusions, we give the turtles IV nutrition, we do physical therapy … things you might not think of with a sea turtle.” Despite the challenges, the successes of Turtle Hospital keep staff members like Zirkelbach motivated. “To take an animal that would not have otherwise survived, to help mitigate for the human impact that’s out there, fix a turtle up and put him back out into the wild—there’s nothing like it,” she said.

Can conservation save our ocean? | The Economist

27:05
The ocean is facing its greatest ever challenge - overfishing, pollution and climate change are all threatening the health of a resource on which the whole world depends. Click here to subscribe to The Economist on YouTube: http://econ.st/2G3TH9d The crew of this ship is on a mission to try and save one of the most endangered sea creatures on the planet. They’re in the middle of a marine protected area in Mexico - a conservation zone where certain types of fishing are banned. Local fishermen are poaching a species of fish that is so highly prized in China, they can make tens of thousands of dollars in just one night. With ocean life under threat from overfishing, pollution and climate change, could marine protected areas be the answer? Near the Mexican fishing town of San Felipe, on the The Upper Gulf of California... Conservation group, Sea Shepherd is working with the authorities to help enforce a Marine Protected Area - or MPA. A designated section of ocean to be conserved, managed and protected. Maintaining rich, diverse ecosystems is key for the health of the Ocean - and ultimately the survival of humanity. But ocean life is under threat. From plants to micro-organisms and animals, species are disappearing forever. Marine Biologist Patricia Gandolfo and the rest of the Sea Shepherd crew are here to stop poachers. Caught up in the nets of the criminal gangs and local fishermen is one particularly rare porpoise - the Vaquita. Worldwide there are thousands of sea species currently threatened with extinction. Losing just one species from the food chain can have a disastrous effect on an entire ecosystem. After it’s sold on, the Totoaba’s swim bladder can fetch up to $100,000 a kilo in China, where it’s prized for its medicinal properties. Critics disapprove of Sea Shepherds use of direct-action tactics in some of their campaigns, but in the Gulf of California, their presence is welcomed by the Mexican government. Globally, the fishing industry employs 260 million people, but many more subsistence fishermen depend on the ocean for their income. Local fisherman here claim protecting the ocean has limited how they can fish, destroying their way of life. Yet doing nothing may ultimately present more of a threat to their livelihoods. Currently Marine Protected Areas make up only 3.6% of the world’s ocean but a growing number of scientists are calling for 30% to be protected by 2030. Cabo Pulmo now has a thriving eco-tourism and diving industry. The environmental rewards provided by the MPA to the local community have been valued at millions of dollars a year - Far more than they ever made from fishing. The ocean is facing its greatest ever challenge - overfishing, pollution and climate change are all threatening the health of a resource on which the whole world depends. Marine protected areas can come in many forms. But if they are to be effective, they must align the need for conservation with the needs of those who depend on the ocean for survival. In order to avoid disaster–and to ensure a sustainable supply of fish for the future–far more of our ocean needs urgent protection. 10 Easy Ways to Survive a Wild Animal Attack

09:20
How to survive bear or shark attack? What should you do if you are bitten by a snake? Here're some tips on what to do when you encounter a wild animal and how to survive wild animal attacks. When we meet some wild animals on a picnic or in the woods, we get scared. But we usually don't know what to do in each case as we might not fully realize the danger and act properly. Any warm-blooded animal might be a carrier of rabies. This is a lethal disease that can't be cured. The disease is transmitted through a bite or spit. However sweet an animal seems, you'd better not touch it. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Meeting a moose in the woods 0:27 Meeting a moose or a boar on the road while driving 1:39 Meeting a hedgehog 2:25 If you're attacked by an angry boar 2:58 If there's a bat in your apartment 3:31 If a coyote, a fox, or a jackal noticed you 4:21 If a nestling has fallen out of its nest 4:50 If a dolphin is near you while you're swimming in the sea 5:19 If a dolphin has been washed ashore 6:19 Meeting a shark in the open sea 6:57 Some extra tips 7:59 SUMMARY -Never approach moose calves or make any abrupt movements. -Don’t Press the car horn or blink the lights if you see a moose or a boar on the road. Slowly stop if the animal appears on the road. -Never touch a hedgehog barehanded as you might catch a whole variety of infections, only take it with you if it’s wounded. -Don’t try to outrun an angry boar, climb up a tree instead. -Don’t panic if you find a bat in your apartment. Put on some thick gloves and carefully take it. -Never try to play with a fox, coyote, or a jackal no matter how cute it looks. Instead, stretch out your arms or clothes to give the impression that you have increased in size. -Only try to save a nestling if it has visible damage. -Don’t think that a dolphin can do absolutely no harm to you. Swim away from it if you can. -If you see a dolphin ashore, don’t carry it back to the sea. Speak to rescuers or the coast guard and wait for help near the dolphin. -In case you ever meet a shark, stay still and defend yourself. Punch it on the nose with all your might and try to leave the water. -Don't let your pets play with wild animals. Don't feed wild animals. Never touch young animals. Their parents will be aggressive. What we are doing to protect sea animals

03:27
Every year more than one hundred thousand whales, dolphins, seals and turtles are caught in abandoned, lost and discarded fishing gear. The scale of the problem is staggering with an estimated 640,000 tonnes of fishing equipment left in our oceans each year. That's why World Animal Protection founded the Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) to stop fishing gear entering our oceans, promote best practice when removing ghost gear from the seas, helping protect marine animals from harm: http://ow.ly/AsE530cljst

The resulting blindness, immobility, and other impairments can end in death. The center has surgically treated many sea turtles, but that brings other risks, like secondary infection. Working with the University of Florida the hospital has now employed electrochemotherapy, which allows local treatment with anti-tumor agents, sparing the body extra exposure. Electric pulses help affected cells take the agents in. FP afflicts all green sea turtle populations. This procedure could offer them a better future. Wild Animals That SAVED Human Lives!

09:22
Check out these Animals That SAVED Human Lives! This top 10 list of amazing stories of animals saving people's lives has some unbelievable stories you have to hear! Subscribe to World5List: http://goo.gl/cpJSA6 Check out our "Superpowers You Can Get RIGHT NOW!" video at: https://youtu.be/a6QmVdBTf0g Check out our "6 Places More Mysterious Than The Bermuda Triangle...?" video at: https://youtu.be/v9VarHk6_cY Check out our "8 Bizarre Things People Found in Their Pool" video at: https://youtu.be/gH7ywvBgXkE 8. She's One Of Us There's a lot of darkness in the world, and things such as kidnappings happen quite often, but in 2005, one girl found herself saved by an unlikely trio. Of lions!! This happened in Ethiopia, where a little 12-year-old girl was kidnapped by 4 men, with very bad intentions and one was trying to force her to marry him apparently but regardless, it wasn’t good. 7. Kevin and the Sea Lion There was a man named Kevin Hines, and for him, his life was becoming too much to bear. Hines was suffering from multiple mental disorders, including depression and being bipolar. These factors led him to try and commit suicide. He, like many others decided he wanted to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge and drown or hopefully end it all as he hit the water. 6. Jambo and Levan While zoos are a fun place to go, they can be dangerous if you don't follow the rules, such as not going into the animal pens. This is what happened to a little boy in the Jersey Zoo. In 1986, a 5-year-old boy named Levan Merritt was watching the gorilla pen when he accidentally fell in somehow, getting knocked unconscious in the process. 5. Battle of the Alphas When it comes to being out in the wild, there are plenty of animals to watch out for, such as lions and tigers and bears!! For Robert Biggs, it was just another day of hiking through the woods of California. As he was going on his way, he saw something: a couple of bears. A mother along with her young cub. He was wise enough not to try and provoke them, but, just observed them from a distance. 4. Dolphin Pack You often hear tales of dolphins saving human beings from sharks, but rarely is it seen quite like it was for Rob Howes and his friends and daughter. They were swimming in Whangarei (fun-gah-ray), New Zealand, when suddenly, seven dolphins appeared around them. Quite inexplicably. They just started to circle around the group as they kept swimming. While they were all flattered and excited to be swimming with dolphins they decided to head back. 3. Deer in your Headlights One of the biggest dangers on the road isn't other people, it's deer. But sometimes, a deer can save a life, such as one who helped a woman in Oxford, Ohio. This occurred in February of 2012, when a woman was just walking through the town when suddenly a man attacked her. He grabbed the woman and pulled her behind a nearby building. 2. Mila the Beluga Whale Whales are incredibly intelligent creatures, and often surprise us at how they are able to interact with other species and even us. Mila the Beluga was able to sense something was very wrong with one particular human, and saved her life. 1. The Dolphin and Dick Van Dyke Dick Van Dyke is one of the most famous actors in history. From TV shows, to TV movies, and of course, his legendary films with Disney and more have led him to being one of the biggest stars Hollywood has ever had. But even he needed help sometimes, including from a dolphin who literally saved his life.

Inspire our children to protect our oceans. A proven, beautiful teaching resource for every school.

03:40
Ocean plastic is a serious problem affecting every part of our planet, but with your help, we can inspire future generations to reverse this throwaway plastic culture that’s destroying our world. The real key to solving the issue is to inspire children from a young age about the problem - and this is where a little bit of help from you can make a direct difference in your community. With amazing success and proven results from schools and communities, we are Crowdfunding across the UK one county at a time to help end ocean plastics, using the Wild Tribe Heroes series of children’s books teaching primary school children about the problems and what they can do to fix it! The power to make this a reality is in your hands and we need your help! Please make a pledge at crowdfunder.co.uk/oceanplasticeducation This project is a social enterprise and all profits will be going to the One Million Pieces campaign to share this message with children around the world. The Wild Tribe Heroes are a collection of gentle engaging true stories about animals that find themselves in trouble when their lives are affected by humans. Deciding it was too dangerous for the little one to continue her leisurely swim, the pooch gently grabbed hold of her shirt with his teeth and dragged her towards the beach. The youngster found this highly amusing and let out pearls of laughter as she was guided towards safety. Saving Sea Turtles on World Sea Turtle Day!

01:01
There are a million reasons to love sea turtles. They swim thousands of miles in their lifetime, they’re some of the oldest living creatures in the world, and they can live just as long as humans! Today, we wanted to share a little bit about a special type of sea turtle, the olive ridley. Each year on the eastern coast of India, the olive ridley return for their famed, synchronized mass nesting. Over the past decade, studies have shown a decline in the number of turtles due to various threats to the nesting sites. For the past seven years, HSI India has been working hard to protect these creatures and give them a fighting chance.

07:08
There are a lot of stories about domesticated animals saving human beings from danger, and I guess most of these would relate to pet dogs, who are indeed man’s most loyal and trusted companion. But when it comes to wild animals, what we usually hear about is the perennial man-animal conflict caused largely by man’s constant encroachment into the animal territory. We have rarely come across cases where the wild animals have come to the aid of a human being in danger. Let’s look at 5 such rare cases today! Dogged By Traffic We've seen it in a thousand movies and TV shows, the heroes end up on a busy street and have to bob and weave through traffic in order to both stay alive! But you'd be surprised how many animals find themselves in traffic with no way out. In Santiago, Chile, a dog got clipped by a car, and couldn't drag itself out of the way. 10. Save the Horse! There are many times when animals will band together for a common goal. Getting food, building shelter, etc. But sometimes, it's surprising just how conscious they are of what they need to do in a dire situation. 9. Cats and Dogs Cats and dogs are usually rivals. They are rivals for the affection of humans, they don't seem to like each other, and it's often been played up by the media and even cartoons! But, in nature, anything can happen, including one saving the other. 8. No Monkey Business Here It's a fact that one of the biggest dangers to animals all over the world is humanity. Not just that humans hunt animals, both legally and not, but our actions and constructions directly affect them. Which is proven easily by this story of a monkey in India. 7. Don't Touch My Baby! In the wilds of Africa, there are a lot of predators you'd be wise to avoid. One of the biggest ones though are lions, who aren't afraid to chase down and kill bigger animals in order to get their food. And in this case, a pride of lions decide to go after a baby Water Buffalo. Perfectly within their capabilities. Yet, once they do, that's when things get crazy. 6. Stuck In The Mud Elephants are among some of the most majestic creatures in the world, and yet they are subject to countless dangers and trials that other animals face. Besides poachers, and predators, they also have to worry about getting stuck in a vat of mud. 5. Hopping Along When you think of a kangaroo you probably picture it bounding along the plains of Australia. Or of a Joey hanging out in its mother’s pouch! But what happens when something happens to that mama kangaroo bounding across the plains and the Joey is left all alone? 4. Dig Those Holes Here's a great story of a parent doing what it takes to save their family. A forest fire in Chile threatened a family of ten dogs, a mother and her nine puppies. To save them, the mother dug a hole under a metal container, which is extremely clever and a great presence of mind under some very stressful conditions!! 3. Two-For-One Special If you’re stuck in a river without a boat, usually, you're screwed. But in Kenya, a Wildebeest and a zebra found themselves saved by an unlikely ally...a hippo! Hippos can be very dangerous, and are known for being one of the deadliest animals in the world!! But in this instance, the hippo went out of its way to save these two baby animals. 2. Whale Of A Tale One of the oddities that the ocean throws at us sometimes is when whales become stranded on beaches or sandbars. Scientists are still trying to make sense of why this happens because as of right now, it remains a mystery. When it does happen though, it's big news. One time though it had a happier ending than most. 1. I'm Drifting, Dog Anyone who has been canoeing or kayaking knows that the worst possible thing that can happen is for you to lose the ability to row. If you have no way of guiding your boat, the river will do it for you, often with severe consequences. So what happens when that situation occurs...with dogs? Origins Explained is the place to be to find all the answers to your questions, from mysterious events and unsolved mysteries to everything there is to know about the world and its amazing animals!

CCAMLR 101: How to Protect Antarctica's Marine Life

04:10
What is CCAMLR, and how can it protect the penguins, seals, whales, and other animals that live in Antarctica? Our whiteboard animation explains. At the height of the Cold War, countries came together to protect Antarctica as a place of peace and science. Unfortunately, the surrounding waters of the Southern Ocean were not protected. With no protections in place, fishing for tiny krill—the keystone of the Antarctic food web—increased dramatically. In response, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) was created in 1980. Its mandate was simple: to conserve Antarctic marine life. Despite that mission, promises to create marine reserves and protected areas in Southern Ocean waters have gone unfulfilled, even as climate change and industrial fishing increasingly threaten vulnerable areas such as the Ross Sea. But it isn’t too late to make good. CCAMLR must act now to create marine reserves and show the world that it is serious about protecting the most pristine and special place on the planet. Learn more at www.pewtrusts.org/ccamlr ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TRANSCRIPT Antarctica—the seventh and southernmost continent in the world—is the coldest, driest, and windiest place on earth. It and the surrounding waters of the Southern Ocean are home to more than 9,000 species that aren’t found anywhere else on earth, including leopard seals, orcas, 7 species of penguins…and polar bears… No, not polar bears! That’s the North Pole! Penguins and polar bears have never crossed paths. Antarctica has been called the world’s last frontier. It is a pristine corner of the planet that leaders have long seen value in preserving. In fact, at the height of the Cold War, the world’s leading nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, agreeing to protect the continent of Antarctica as a place of “peace and science.” Penguins and other species were saved! Well, their habitat on land was saved. But what about the waters where they hunted for food? Unfortunately, the entire Southern Ocean was left open to commercial fishing and other exploitation. This spawned a fishing frenzy for Antarctic krill, a tiny shrimp-like crustacean that is processed into animal feed and omega-3 supplements. They may not look like much, but krill form the base of the entire Southern Ocean food web. Without them, penguins and other predators are put at risk. Marine scientists, already worried about the devastating impacts of climate change on Antarctica, raised the alarm when they saw that the krill race was quickly expanding. World leaders responded in 1980 by creating the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, or CCAMLR. CCAMLR’s mandate is to conserve Antarctic marine life. Conserve: to keep something safe from being damaged or destroyed; to use something carefully in order to prevent loss or waste.. But while CCAMLR was responding to interest in krill, another fishing frenzy began—this time, for toothfish, a top predator in the Southern Ocean. Diners called it Chilean sea bass and fishermen called it “white gold” because the catch is highly valuable. Unfortunately, illegal fishing quickly wreaked havoc on populations of this important predator. As demand for krill and toothfish increased, it became clear a new approach was needed. And in 2009, CCAMLR had a bright idea. It designated the first marine protected area in the South Orkney Islands, keeping those waters free from industrial fishing. It was a good start, but they knew they needed to do more. So in 2011, CCAMLR committed to establishing a network of large marine protected areas around the Southern Ocean. It was a big promise that is backed by the best available science. Experts say that we should be designating almost a third of our oceans as highly protected in order to support sustainable, healthy oceans that are resilient to climate change. It’s been four years since CCAMLR’s promise and we are still waiting for this large network of marine protected areas around the Southern Ocean. Today, climate change and industrial fishing continue to threaten vulnerable areas like the Ross Sea, while less than 2% of the world’s oceans are highly protected! At a time when 85 percent of the world’s fisheries are in decline, we know we can do a lot better than that. But is not too late for CCAMLR to make good on their promise and return to their primary mission. Remember what the second “C” stands for? CCAMLR was created to conserve – conserve the Southern Ocean, its krill, penguins, toothfish and other marine life. But CCAMLR must act now to create marine reserves and show the world they mean business about protecting the most pristine and special place on the planet.
