When to use Oracle Database Bitmap Indexes Lesson 1

00:49
This tutorial will identify some use cases for Oracle bitmap indexes, including some of the more advanced capabilities. See all lessons, free, at http://www.skillbuilders.com/when-to-use-oracle-bitmap-indexes. Indexing your Oracle Database for best performance? There are cases, depending on data structures and queries, where b-tree indexes are not useful (e.g. scan access paths perform inadequately). In these cases, bitmap indexes may be a better solution. Bitmap indexes are a powerful tool, but they need to be used with care. Inappropriate use may cause problems worse than those they solve. The tutorial covers somewhat more advanced cases such as using bitmap join indexes to denormalize a snowflake schema, and to enable star transformations in queries that join fact tables to several dimension tables. This training will benefit any Oracle DBA administering a Data Warehouse or VLDB and "power" developers working in same. Instructor: Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson, SkillBuilders

Analyzing and Troubleshooting Oracle Parallel Execution

01:58:45
Presented by Randolf Geist 8th May 2013 Oracle parallel execution, a feature of the Enterprise Edition, allows you to automatically distribute the processing of a SQL statement execution among multiple worker processes. This requires additional effort when analysing and troubleshooting such parallel executions, since it adds complexity that is simply not there with normal serial execution where only a single process is involved. In this webinar, Randolf Geist, provides an overview of what these additional challenges are and how these can be approached. Why Won't Oracle Use My Index - 12c Attribute Clustering - Lesson 1

01:46
Sometimes a poor clustering factor is the cause when Oracle Database cost based optimizer does not choose to use an index. With Oracle 12c (12.1.0.2 EE) offers a new feature that can really help - "Atrribute Clustering". This is implemented with a new keyword on CREATE TABLE - "CLUSTERING BY LINEAR ORDER". In this Free Tutorial from SkillBuilders and Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson, you'll get a brief refresher on clustering factor and a demonstration of CREATE TABLE - "CLUSTERING BY LINEAR ORDER" - so the CBO will use your index! In this first lesson, John will provide a brief review of clustering factor. See all 6 lessons - FREE - at http://www.skillbuilders.com/12c-attribute-clustering

This is continuation to Part 70. Please watch Part 70 from SQL Server tutorial for beginners. A dirty read happens when one transaction is permitted to read data that has been modified by another transaction that has not yet been committed. In most cases this would not cause a problem. However, if the first transaction is rolled back after the second reads the data, the second transaction has dirty data that does not exist anymore. SQL script to create table tblInventory Create table tblInventory ( Id int identity primary key, Product nvarchar(100), ItemsInStock int ) Go Insert into tblInventory values ('iPhone', 10) Dirty Read Example : In the example below, Transaction 1, updates the value of ItemsInStock to 9. Then it starts to bill the customer. While Transaction 1 is still in progress, Transaction 2 starts and reads ItemsInStock value which is 9 at the moment. At this point, Transaction 1 fails because of insufficient funds and is rolled back. The ItemsInStock is reverted to the original value of 10, but Transaction 2 is working with a different value (i.e 10). Transaction 1 : Begin Tran Update tblInventory set ItemsInStock = 9 where Id=1 -- Billing the customer Waitfor Delay '00:00:15' -- Insufficient Funds. Rollback transaction Rollback Transaction Transaction 2 : Set Transaction Isolation Level Read Uncommitted Select * from tblInventory where Id=1 Read Uncommitted transaction isolation level is the only isolation level that has dirty read side effect. This is the least restrictive of all the isolation levels. When this transaction isolation level is set, it is possible to read uncommitted or dirty data. Another option to read dirty data is by using NOLOCK table hint. The query below is equivalent to the query in Transaction 2. Select * from tblInventory (NOLOCK) where Id=1

AskTOM Office Hours: Hash Joins and Database In-Memory

01:13:30
Held on April 20 2018 Andy Rivenes (@TheInMemoryGuy) and Maria Colgan (@SQLMaria) focused on a deep dive into hash joins and how they are used with Database In-Memory to make joins lightning fast. The session began by reviewing how traditional hash joins work and then addressed Bloom filters and how Database In-Memory uses them to effectively turn hash joins into scan and filter operations. The use of Join Groups was then discussed as a way to further enhance join performance in 12.2 and beyond. Oracle Tuning Tutorial - Long Full Table Scans Part 5 of 5

02:44
See all 5 tutorials, free, at SkillBuilders.com/OracleTuningFullTableScans. In summary, serial full table scans were always indirect before 11.2, parallel scans always direct before 11.2. These are the two critical parameters. That hidden parameter _serial_direct_read, remember, defaults to auto so your application may start behaving very differently as you upgrade from 11.2.01 or 11.2.02. Parallel_degree_policy, that defaults to manual. But again, it becomes an option when you go to 11.2 to enable the automatic facility which allows not only automatic tuning to the degree of parallelism but also enables the ability to make indirect reads when doing a full table scan.
