How To Attend a Muslim Friday Prayer Service (Jum’ah)

03:25
Watch more How to Celebrate Ramadan videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/217206-How-To-Attend-a-Muslim-Friday-Prayer-Service-Jumah Step 1: Find a Friday prayer service Use Muslim acquaintances or a Website to find a Friday prayer service near you. Most are held around lunchtime. Tip Friday prayer services do not always happen in a mosque. University students often arrange Friday prayers in an empty hall or auditorium. Mosques in urban areas host prayers in satellite locations, such as downtown office buildings or even churches. Step 2: Purify your intention As with all acts in Islam, take a quiet moment to purify your intention, affirming that you plan to attend Friday prayers for God’s sake alone. Tip While Friday is usually a holiday in Muslim-majority countries, it’s a regular workday elsewhere, and some men are not able to attend as a result. Do your best to fit Friday prayers into your work schedule. Step 3: Take a shower or bath If you are able and you have time, take a shower or bath on Friday morning, as this practice was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad, who advised his followers to keep clean. Step 4: Dress in clean, modest clothes Dress in clean, modest clothes. For men, this means no shorts. For women, this means covering the arms and legs, avoiding tight or revealing clothing, and bringing along a headscarf. Tip Cologne is recommended for men, but perfume for women should be avoided. Step 5: Remove your shoes When entering the mosque or prayer area, remove your shoes. This is the moment of truth for your socks! Step 6: Enter prayer area with right foot first Enter the prayer area with your right foot first. If the mosque is segregated according to gender, women should enter the women’s area, and men should enter the men’s area. Tip If you have small children, you may prefer to leave them at home. If you need to, however, you can bring them. Children of all ages are a common sight at Friday prayers. If a child is very disruptive, or if a baby can’t stop crying, however, you may have to leave with them. Step 7: Offer voluntary prayer If you are Muslim, offer two cycles of voluntary prayer, known as tahyatul masjid salah, which means literally, 'the prayer to greet the mosque.' Tip If you are not Muslim, take a moment to sit quietly and offer your own prayers. Step 8: Sit next to other congregants on the floor Sit next to other congregants on the floor. Choose the available space closest to the front of the room. In other words, the front rows should be filled first, particularly because the back rows should be left open for latecomers. Step 9: Listen to adhan Listen as a fellow congregant gives the adhan, or call to prayer. This means the Friday prayer service has begun; refrain from talking at this point. Step 10: Sit quietly & listen to imam Sit quietly and listen while the imam, or prayer leader, offers a sermon, or khutbah. The first half the khutbah is the longest, followed by a brief period when the imam will sit down and offer silent prayers. Then he will stand again to deliver the shorter final section of the sermon. Tip A sermon will always open and close with words in Arabic. Hopefully, the language of the sermon itself will be one you understand. If not, be patient and ask someone near you for a translation when it is over. Step 11: Listen to iqaamah After the sermon, a man will stand to give the iqaamah, a shortened version of the call to prayer, which indicates the prayer itself is about to commence. Step 12: Line up shoulder to shoulder Stand up and move so you are standing shoulder to shoulder with the people on your left and right, forming a straight line that faces the qibla, or direction pointing to Mecca. Your shoulders, arms or feet can be lightly touching other people’s. Tip If you are not Muslim, ask someone where you can sit to observe the prayers. Generally, non-Muslims should not join in the prayer. Step 13: Perform salat Perform two cycles of the ritual prayer, or salat, following along with the imam. Step 14: Greet other people When the prayer is over, be sure to greet the people praying on either side of you when they are finished, either by shaking their hands and saying, 'May Allah accept your prayers,' or by simply smiling. Step 15: Make a charitable contribution If you wish, make a charitable contribution as you leave. Boxes for contributions are generally available near the exit. Did You Know? The Prophet Muhammad was known for giving short sermons, but don’t expect everyone to follow that lead—some sermons can last more than an hour.

Please note: The recitation is read out aloud for the purpose of demonstrating what needs to be said during prayer. Some prayers require the recitation and other aspects to be said silently. For further details, please consult your local Islamic centre. For step by step instructions on how to perform the Salah, please watch "My Prayer - Step by Step Guide to Salah" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKblG-Zoagk Prayer is a unique training and developmental program which, if well and devotedly performed, can achieve for a Muslim many valuable spiritual, physical, and ethical gains. Salah is the daily ritual prayer enjoined upon all Muslims as one of the five Pillars of Islam. It is performed five times a day by all Muslims. Salah is a precise worship, different from praying on the inspiration of the moment. Muslims pray or, perhaps more correctly, worship five times throughout the day: · Between first light and sunrise. · After the sun has passed the middle of the sky. · Between mid-afternoon and sunset. · Between sunset and the last light of the day. · Between darkness and midnight. Each prayer may take at least 5 minutes, but it may be lengthened as a person wishes. Muslims can pray in any clean environment, alone or together, in a mosque or at home, at work or on the road, indoors or out. Under special circumstances, such as illness, journey, or war, certain allowances in the prayers are given to make their offering easy. Having specific times each day to be close to God helps Muslims remain aware of the importance of their faith, and the role it plays in every part of life. Muslims start their day by cleaning themselves and then standing before their Lord in prayer. The prayers consist of recitations from the Quran in Arabic and a sequence of movements: standing, bowing, prostrating, and sitting. All recitations and movements express submission, humility, and homage to God. The various postures Muslims assume during their prayers capture the spirit of submission; the words remind them of their commitments to God. The prayer also reminds one of belief in the Day of Judgment and of the fact that one has to appear before his or her Creator and give an account of their entire life. This is how a Muslim starts their day. In the course of the day, Muslims dissociate themselves form their worldly engagements for a few moments and stand before God. This brings to mind once again the real purpose of life. These prayers serve as a constant reminder throughout the day to help keep believers mindful of God in the daily stress of work, family, and distractions of life. Prayer strengthens faith, dependence on God, and puts daily life within the perspective of life to come after death and the last judgment. As they prepare to pray, Muslims face Mecca, the holy city that houses the Kaaba (the ancient place of worship built by Abraham and his son Ishmael). At the end of the prayer, the shahada (testimony of faith) is recited, and the greeting of peace, "Peace be upon all of you and the mercy and blessings of God," is repeated twice. Though individual performance of salah is permissible, collective worship in the mosque has special merit and Muslims are encouraged to perform certain salah with others. With their faces turned in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, the worshipers align themselves in parallel rows behind the imam, or prayer leader, who directs them as they execute the physical postures coupled with Quran recitations. Although not religiously mandated, individual devotional prayers, especially during the night, are emphasized and are a common practice among pious Muslims. Full Muslim prayer (with English subtitles)

05:32
Muslim prayer with English subtitle translation. A Muslim is obliged to pray at least five times a day: once before sunrise; at noon; once in the afternoon; at sunset and once at night. During prayer he or she is to focus and meditate on God by reciting these words in order to reaffirm and strengthen the bond between creator and creation. This has the effect of guiding the soul to peace and truth. Such meditation is intended to help maintain a feeling of spiritual peace, in the face of whatever challenges work, social or family life may present. The five daily acts of peaceful prayer are to serve as a template and inspiration for conduct during the rest of the day, transforming it, ideally, into one single and sustained meditation: even sleep is to be regarded as but another phase of that sustained meditation. Last Call to Prayer from China Hui Ethnic Lens for female only mosques 中國唯一女性伊斯蘭清真寺

07:52
Unlike their peers around the world, Muslim women in China are enjoying having female-only mosques and getting a unique opportunity to develop their religious knowledge. "I feel so blessed to have a mosque I can visit," 80-year-old Ma Guifang told China Daily on Tuesday, November 20. "Not many female Muslims enjoy such a privilege." For the past 20 years, the elderly Muslim lady from the Hui ethnic group has been attending this women-only mosque, a phenomenon unique to China. The province's Muslim women are proud of being able to take care of their mosque. Ma Lan, the 46-year-old caretaker, rises at 4 am to shovel coal into the boiler to ensure a good supply of hot water for the washing ritual. She even cooperates with other female worshippers in keeping the mosque clean and ready for daily prayers and Friday congregation, which gathers about 150 worshippers. "Women do all the work here, no matter how physical it gets," Ma said. The mosque is financed solely by donations from female worshippers and visitors as well. "We receive about 2,000 to 3,000 yuan ($321 to $481) a month," imam Tao Jinling said, pointing at the list of donors and how much they gave. "Around 20 to 30 people come to the mosque every day. The number rises to around 150 during the Juma prayers on Friday." According to official data, China has 20 million Muslims, most of them are concentrated in Xinjiang, Ningxia, Gansu, and Qinghai regions and provinces. Unofficially, Muslim groups say the number is even higher, stating that there are from 65-100 million Muslims in China — up to 7.5 percent of the population. In general, during Muslim prayers, women may not lead men but may lead other women, which is the case of females leading prayers in female-only mosques in China. In Islam, the majority of jurists maintain that a woman is allowed to lead her fellow sisters in congregational prayer if there is no man to lead the congregation. Education Chinese Muslims praise efforts of the women-only mosques in educating females about their religion. "Only China has women's mosques, but this is not a common practice among Chinese Muslims," said Jin Rubin, secretary-general of the China Islamic Association. "But one thing for sure is that women's mosques can provide them with a better level of education, which Islam greatly encourages." Wang Yuming, director of Lanzhou's Xihu mosque, which also runs a school for women, agrees. "Muslims care about education for women because we believe they are the lighthouse of the family," he said "Their influence helps to keep our society stable." The school costs the mosque about 500,000 yuan every year, but Wang believes it's worth the cost. "In addition to teaching the women about the Qur'an and Islam, we also teach them basic math and urge them to tell their children to stay away from drugs," he said. "Female Muslims deserve a decent level of education and the mosque is the best place to provide that. "Now that winter has come, we have to make sure the classrooms are warm enough to allow elderly students with arthritis to sit through the classes without pain," said Wang. Studying at the school for five years, Ma Lanying, 76, said that learning is a lifelong activity for Muslims. "I feel so proud that I can understand the Qur'an and know exactly what the prayers mean," said Ma, who walks 45 minutes to school every weekday. Determined to change her life, Ma Aizheng, who worked as a nurse before she retired, said she makes time to study at home in the afternoon after classes finish at 11:30 am. "Studying the Qur'an has become a spiritual support for me," said Ma. "I didn't have time when I was working and now I have a lot catching up to do." more information at http://youtube.com/user/cosmeticmachines

I am so so so very sorry about the length of the video - I cut out so many questions in order to make this fit the 25min limit I had promised myself not to cross. I might add some more Islam Q&A among the Random Q&A I shall be making next in shaa Allah - because I did record many many more answers but..man I know how to blabber and come on..in my defense these are important matters! :-D PS! Special salute to the bump that decided to arrive on my forehead right in time for the recording! PS! I just watched the video myself, and I feel like I come across a tad hard, and wallahy this was totally not my intention! In shaa Allah next one will be more goofy! :-D Explanation of Terms: Hadeeth - In Islamic religious use is often translated as "prophetic traditions", meaning the corpus of the reports of the teachings, deeds and sayings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). In shaa Allah - if God so wills Dawah - Inviting people to understand Islam. Imaan - Faith Taraweeh - Extra Prayers Tahajjud - Also known as the "night prayer" is a voluntary prayer, performed by followers of Islam. It is not one of the five obligatory prayers required of all Muslims, yet still, the Islamic prophet, Muhammad as been recorded as performing the tahajjud prayer regularly and encouraging his companions to offer it to God for its many rewards and benefits, and a way to purify the soul, enabling it to approach the Realm of God.
