Abstract: Purpose -- This thesis examines to what extent disclosing product placement influences the brand awareness, the attitude toward the brand and purchase intention of the placed products. Design/methodology/approach -- In a unique cooperation with the largest commercial broadcaster of the county an online experiment has been carried out, using a 2 (product placement disclosure present vs. product placement disclosure absent) experimental design. A non-student sample, a real program and a real product placement were used. Furthermore, the legislation was followed into greatest detail. Findings -- Disclosing product placement has been found to positively influence the effectiveness of product placement as an advertising mechanism. However, this positive effect is restricted to brand recall only. Attitude toward the brand and purchase intention did not differ significantly between the disclosure and no-disclosure condition. Practical implications -- Two main practical implications stem from this research. Firstly, for the Government it is advised to alter the regulations, as this regulation is expected to benefit advertisers instead of protect consumers. Increasing disclosure times might be a good strategy. Secondly, for advertisers, there is no reason to believe that the change in regulations will have negative consequences. Moreover, when advertisers use product placements as a tool for the creation of brand awareness, particularly brand recall, product placement might be even more effective than before. Originality/value -- To the best of our knowledge no study has investigated the effect of this type of product placement disclosure and product placement on its effectiveness in television shows. Moreover, since the (European) Government has made it mandatory for implementing product placement as an advertising instrument, the findings of this research can be considered of considerable value. Finally, this is the first study to examine the influence of disclosing product placement on behavioral outcomes, in this case purchase intention. Ah, product placements. Amazing marketing elements that has led to unnatural dialog and awkward scenes in some of your favorite movies. I had no idea what a product placement was as a young boy, I just found myself craving Reece Pieces after watching E.T. lured into Elliot’s bedroom with candy (that’s called kidnapping by the way). I wasn’t the only one. After the movie captured the hearts of everyone around the world in the early 80’s, Reece’s saw a 65% increase in sales. This was just one of many films that saw truly great results from product placement. When Tom Cruise felt the need for speed in Top Gun and sported aviators, sales increased over 40%. Hell, even the number of men enlisting in the Academy was up over 500%! This wasn’t even the first time Jerry Maguire helped a company’s bottom line. A few years’ prior Mr. Cruise slid across his parent’s floor in his underwear with a white shirt and…Ray Ban sunglasses, which resulted in 360,000 pairs sold across America. Just to complete the sunglasses hat-trick Ray Ban saw similar results when Will Smith was off fighting the scum of the universe in Men in Black with an estimated 5x revenue boost for the company. Fun fact, the brand didn’t even have a logo or a brand mention during the entire film, however, Will Smith managed to fit it in his theme song for the movie. What do all of the examples above have in common? Actually 2 things. 1. They are all great movies. Not only a personal opinion, reviews would agree. 2. Each product featured in the movies had incredible results for the brands. For every great product placement, there are about 30 awful examples that both diminish the piece of content (the movie) and hurt the brand its self. In 2012 the reboot of Spider-Man, the tech world was in an uproar when Peter Parker used a Bing search instead of the more acceptable Google, citing that it was unrealistic for a millennial genius to use Bing (you know they actually own a 20% search market share). Michael Bay’s fourth installment of the Transformers franchise received an outpour of criticism as he managed to fit in 55 separate brands into the movie. 55. Let that sink in. Not that the producers of the movie cared much, Transformers 4 made over one billion in dollars at the box-office, a staggering number when you consider the movie was completely torn apart by the critics. The brands also suffered, despite the first movie generating big numbers for GM the latest installment was so crowded with brands, no one could stand out and brand recognition was almost impossible and incredibly annoying to the viewers. Forget the fact that the movie was a box office success, it was a pretty bad movie. Read the reviews and you will see this was universally considered a piece of garbage. So what is the key to success? Well, this is where we have to take off our movie business hats and start looking at it from a content quality POV. The key is making the products fit in naturally within the story, let’s go back to E.T. Steven Spielberg was not tasked with fitting Reece Pieces into his script, the plot point was just there to enhance the story and it made perfect sense to insert a brand. Aviators were what pilots wore when they flew (hence the name) so once again, it made sense. James Bond is an over-the-top cool spy so of course he would drive a luxury car and would any doubt that the Dodge Charger is a perfect fit for Vin Diesel’s character in the Fast and Furious franchise? Toy Story is an enchanting movie about the life of toys, of course there are well-known toys in the movie…it makes sense. So when sponsoring a piece of content or creating an original piece for part of a brand make your product or service fit into the story, not the other way around. This will keep the content quality high, engage the audience and if done correctly, will result in positive reaction to your own product or service.

The main reason why I've always recommended Amazon as the go-to affiliate network for beginners is because of the vast array of new products that are introduced on a daily basis. Along with that, Amazon is a complete SELLING MACHINE! What I mean by that, is they have drilled their conversion rates down to the last detail. Typically I can convert traffic I send to Amazon from my affiliate sites around 12%. The reason why it works so well is that the moment people land on Amazon, they are automatically switched into "buyer mode". Meaning, they know the only thing left for them to do is BUY. What that means, is all you have to do is get people to Amazon's site, and they literally do the selling for you. Here are some tips for beginners trying to break into the Amazon Affiliate Partner Program. Tip 1: Pick a niche you are passionate about, and confirm other people are passionate about it. the best way to do this is to type the main keyword of your niche into Amazon's search box. If you see dozens and hundreds of products related to your niche (with lots of product reviews) it's typically a good niche to get into. Tip 2: Create a blog and create tons of content related to your niche. You don't (nor shouldnt) sell affiliate offers in every piece of content. Ideally, you want to aim for a content to promotion ration of 5:1. This is what Google is looking for. Always keep Google happy. Tip 3: Tap into social media by creating a YouTube channel, Facebook fan page, and more. Funnel your audience to a squeeze page, and then from their pitch your affiliate review pages. Tip 4: If you're a beginner, it's important that you realize it make take more than a few days before you start making sales. While it is possible to earn affiliate commissions with Amazon within a few days of creating a campaign, realistically you shouldn't expect to start making sales within the first 14-30 days. It takes time for your website to carve out a space on the internet. However, if you are determined and post 1 new blog post and 1 new video each day for your first 30 days, you hold a way higher chance of earning affiliate commissions within the first 30 days. Tip 5: Combine other offers from other affiliate networks with your Amazon promotions. You can make big money outside of Amazon as well. All in all, I believe that Amazon Affiliate Marketing is best for beginners to start with. It has so many different niches that you can tap into that competition isn't much of an issue even in 2017.
