Westward Expansion: Crash Course US History #24

12:44
In which John Green teaches you about the Wild, Wild, West, which as it turns out, wasn't as wild as it seemed in the movies. When we think of the western expansion of the United States in the 19th century, we're conditioned to imagine the loner. The self-reliant, unattached cowpoke roaming the prairie in search of wandering calves, or the half-addled prospector who has broken from reality thanks to the solitude of his single-minded quest for gold dust. While there may be a grain of truth to these classic Hollywood stereotypes, it isn't a very big grain of truth. Many of the pioneers who settled the west were family groups. Many were immigrants. Many were major corporations. The big losers in the westward migration were Native Americans, who were killed or moved onto reservations. Not cool, American pioneers. America’s Westward expansion was fueled by both Manifest Destiny and a desire to grow the nation and its resources — though at a cost: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/manifest-destiny As Americans continued to stream West on the name of Manifest Destiny, American Indians saw their lives changed forever as they moved from practising resistance to lives on reservations: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/from-resistance-to-reservations

Thomas Jefferson & His Democracy: Crash Course US History #10

13:19
In which John Green teaches you about founding father and third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson is a somewhat controversial figure in American history, largely because he, like pretty much all humans, was a big bundle of contradictions. Jefferson was a slave-owner who couldn't decide if he liked slavery. He advocated for small government, but expanded federal power more than either of his presidential predecessor. He also idealized the independent farmer and demonized manufacturing, but put policies in place that would expand industrial production in the US. Controversy may ensue as we try to deviate a bit from the standard hagiography/slander story that usually told about old TJ. John explores Jefferson's election, his policies, and some of the new nation's (literally and figuratively) formative events that took place during Jefferson's presidency. In addition to all this, Napoleon drops in to sell Louisiana, John Marshall sets the course of the Supreme Court, and John Adams gets called a tiny tyrant. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Thomas Jefferson is remembered as the Founding Father responsible for saying all men are created equal in The Declaration of Independence: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/the-declaration-of-independence Jefferson didn't always practice what he preached though, as seen in his mixed views on American Indians: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/excerpts-from-thomas-jefferson-s-writings-on-american-indians Follow us! http://www.twitter.com/thecrashcourse http://www.twitter.com/realjohngreen http://www.twitter.com/crashcoursestan http://www.twitter.com/raoulmeyer http://www.twitter.com/thoughtbubbler http://www.twitter.com/saysdanica Like us! http://www.facebook.com/youtubecrashcourse Support CrashCourse on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/crashcourse

The Greatest Land Deal in History: The Louisiana Purchase and the Destiny of America (2003)

56:49
The Louisiana Purchase (French: Vente de la Louisiane "Sale of Louisiana") was the acquisition of the Louisiana territory (828,000 square miles) by the United States from France in 1803. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0375707611/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0375707611&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=de1da799c6a17bcfed467910e2f7378d The U.S. paid fifty million francs ($11,250,000 USD) and a cancellation of debts worth eighteen million francs ($3,750,000 USD) for a total of sixty-eight million francs ($15,000,000 USD). The Louisiana territory included land from fifteen present U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. The territory contained land that forms Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska; the portion of Minnesota west of the Mississippi River; a large portion of North Dakota; a large portion of South Dakota; the northeastern section of New Mexico; the northern portion of Texas; the area of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Continental Divide; Louisiana west of the Mississippi River (plus New Orleans); and small portions of land within the present Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. Its population was around 60,000 inhabitants, of whom half were colored.[1] The Kingdom of France controlled the Louisiana territory from 1699 until it was ceded to Spain in 1762. Napoleon in 1800, hoping to re-establish an empire in North America, regained ownership of Louisiana. The dream of a new empire failed[why?] and Napoleon decided to sell Louisiana to the United States. The Americans originally sought to purchase only the port city of New Orleans and its adjacent coastal lands, but quickly accepted the bargain. The Louisiana Purchase occurred during the term of the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson. Before the purchase was finalized, the decision faced Federalist Party opposition; they argued that it was unconstitutional to acquire any territory. Jefferson agreed that the U.S. Constitution did not contain explicit provisions for acquiring territory, but he did have full treaty power and that was enough. After the early explorations, the U.S. government sought to establish control of the region, since trade along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers was still dominated by British and French traders from Canada and allied Indians, especially the Sauk and Fox. The U.S. adapted the former Spanish facility at Fort Bellefontaine as a fur trading post near St. Louis in 1804 for business with the Sauk and Fox.[37] In 1808 two military forts with trading factories were built, Fort Osage along the Missouri River in western present-day Missouri and Fort Madison along the Upper Mississippi River in eastern present-day Iowa.[38] With tensions increasing with Great Britain, in 1809 Fort Bellefontaine was converted to a U.S. military fort, and was used for that purpose until 1826. During the War of 1812, Great Britain and allied Indians defeated U.S. forces in the Upper Mississippi; the U.S. abandoned Forts Osage and Madison, as well as several other U.S. forts built during the war, including Fort Johnson and Fort Shelby. After U.S. ownership of the region was confirmed in the Treaty of Ghent (1814), the U.S. built or expanded forts along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, including adding to Fort Bellefontaine, and constructing Fort Armstrong (1816) and Fort Edwards (1816) in Illinois, Fort Crawford (1816) in Prairie du Chien Wisconsin, Fort Snelling (1819) in Minnesota, and Fort Atkinson (1819) in Nebraska. The American government used $3 million in gold as a down payment, and issued bonds for the balance to pay France for the purchase. Earlier that year, Francis Baring and Company of London had become the U.S. government's official banking agent in London. Because of this favored position, the U.S. asked the Baring firm to handle the transaction. Francis Baring's son Alexander was in Paris at the time and helped in the negotiations.[39] Another Baring advantage was a close relationship with Hope and Company of Amsterdam. The two banking houses worked together to facilitate and underwrite the Purchase. Because Napoleon wanted to receive his money as quickly as possible, the two firms received the American bonds and shipped the gold to France. Napoleon used the money to finance his planned invasion of England, which never took place. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisiana_Purchase

Klondike Alaska: A Rail History

01:29:30
For most people, railroads in Alaska and the Yukon are synonymous with the Alaska Railroad and the White Pass and Yukon Railroad whose passenger cars provide tourists with vistas of awe-inspiring terrain. That same terrain provided enormous challenges for early settlers of both territories. Railroads were an integral part of overcoming those challenges. Dozens of other railroads also laid track in Alaska, the Yukon, and northwest British Columbia and provided the means to transport supplies to settlements and to transport the region’s raw materials to outside markets. Klondike Alaska charts the history of many of those railroads. ©KUAC 2005 DVD's of this program are available for purchase at www.kuac.org.

For most of you, Warren Buffett needs no introduction: his track record speaks for itself. What makes Buffett unique among the world's richest men is that he made his fortune not by innovating in the tech industry or by inheriting billions, but by making successful stock picks for over half a century. Despite his immense fortune, Buffett retains the humbleness of his upbringing. Born right at the start of the Great Depression, Warren saw the great poverty of the 1930s firsthand. He was lucky enough to be born to a congressman, Howard Buffett, who could provide for his family despite the crisis. Nevertheless, Buffett learned to value money from an early age. In school his love of math and thriftiness naturally led to entrepreneurial ambitions. He sold Coca Cola to his fellow students, bought and operated pinball machines and eventually bought an entire farm to rent out. After graduating university he went to work for his favorite teacher, Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing. Using Graham's teachings, Buffett made many successful stock picks and outperformed the stock market by a factor of 4. Ironically, Warren's only bad investment was purchasing Berkshire Hathaway itself, which at the time was a struggling textile company. Buffett bought Berkshire just to fire its CEO and later regretted the move; indeed, he sold the company's textile business later on and used it purely as an investment vehicle. Today, Berkshire Hathaway is the world's largest conglomerate and Buffett is one of the richest men alive thanks to it. Where US Politics Came From: Crash Course US History #9

13:57
In which John Green teaches you where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the US constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months. Then the contentious debate about the nature of the United States began, and it continues to this day. Washington and his lackey/handler Alexander Hamilton pursued an elitist program of federalism. They attempted to strengthen the central government, create a strong nation-state, and leave less of the governance to the states, They wanted to create debt, encourage manufacturing, and really modernize the new nation/ The opposition, creatively known as the anti-federalists, wanted to build some kind of agrarian pseudo-paradise where every (white) man could have his own farm, and live a free, self-reliant life. The founding father who epitomized this view was Thomas Jefferson. By the time Adams became president, the anti-federalists had gotten the memo about how alienating a name like anti-federalist can be. It's so much more appealing to voters if your party is for something rather than being defined by what you're against, you know? In any case, Jefferson and his acolytes changed their name to the Democratic-Republican Party, which covered a lot of bases, and proceeded to protest nearly everything Adams did. Lest you think this week is all boring politics, you'll be thrilled to hear this episode has a Whiskey Rebellion, a Quasi-War, anti-French sentiment, some controversial treaties, and something called the XYZ Affair, which sounds very exciting. Learn all about it this week with John Green. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Much of America's politics came from debates between democratic republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist Alexander Hamilton: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/alexander-hamilton While Jefferson would go on to become president, Hamilton heavily influenced President George Washington who set many American political ideals in his farewell address that Hamilton helped craft: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/washington-s-farewell-address Follow us! http://www.twitter.com/thecrashcourse http://www.twitter.com/realjohngreen http://www.twitter.com/crashcoursestan http://www.twitter.com/raoulmeyer http://www.twitter.com/saysdanica http://www.twitter.com/thoughtbubbler Turn on the captions. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media? _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. The War of 1812 - Crash Course US History #11

12:43
In which John Green teaches you about the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and its former colonial overlord England. It started in, you guessed it 1812. The war lasted until 1815, and it resolved very little. John will take you through the causes of the war, tell you a little bit about the fighting itself, and get into just why the US Army couldn't manage to make any progress invading Canada. And yes, Canadians, we're going to talk about the White House getting burned down. The upshot: no territory changed hands, and most of the other bones of contention were solved prior to the actual war. Although nothing much changed for the US and England, the Native Americans were the big losers. Tecumseh was killed, and the Indian tribes lost a lot of territory. Watch as John lays it all out for you. Also, check out #1812problems on Twitter. It's awesome. The Quakers, the Dutch, and the Ladies: Crash Course US History #4

11:38
In which John Green teaches you about some of the colonies that were not in Virginia or Massachussetts. Old New York was once New Amsterdam. Why they changed it, I can say; ENGLISH people just liked it better that way, and when the English took New Amsterdam in 1643, that's just what they did. Before the English got there though, the colony was full of Dutch people who treated women pretty fairly, and allowed free black people to hold jobs. John also discusses Penn's Woods, also known as Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania was (briefly) a haven of religious freedom, and William Penn dealt relatively fairly with the natives his colony displaced. Of course, as soon as Penn died, the colonist started abusing the natives immediately. We venture as far south as the Carolina colonies, where the slave labor economy was taking shape. John also takes on the idea of the classless society in America, and the beginning of the idea of the American dream. It turns out that in spite of the lofty dream that everyone had an equal shot in the new world, there were elites in the colonies. And these elites tended to be in charge. And then their kids tended to take over when they died. So yeah, not quite an egalitarian paradise. In addition to all this, we get into the Salem Witch Trials, the treatment of women in the colonies, and colonial economics. Oh yeah, one more thing, before you comment about how he says we're talking about the American Revolution next week, but the end screen says Seven Years War, consider that perhaps the Seven Years War laid the groundwork for the revolution to happen. Also, turn on the subtitles by clicking the CC button. You'll like them. The Louisiana Purchase: A Treasury of Forgotten Details and New Insights (2003)

01:05:21
Thomas James Fleming (born July 5, 1927) is an American military historian and historical novelist and the author of over forty nonfiction and fiction titles. His work reflects a particular interest on the American Revolution, with titles such as Liberty! The American Revolution And The Future Of America, Duel: Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, and the History of America and Washington's Secret War: The Hidden History of Valley Forge. He is the only author ever to have won main selections for the Book-of-the-Month Club in both fiction and nonfiction categories. He is best known for his appearances in C-Span, PBS, A&E, and the History Channel. After brief stints as a newspaperman and magazine editor, he became a full-time writer in 1960. His first history book, Now We Are Enemies, an account of the Battle of Bunker Hill, was published that same year. Since then, Fleming has published a long list of books about various events and figures of the Revolutionary era. He has also written about other periods of American history, and has written over a dozen well-received novels set against various historical backgrounds. He said, "I never wanted to be an Irish-American writer, my whole idea was to get across that bridge and be an American writer.[1] Immersing himself in American history, and writing books on Colonial families and military men, helped him build such a bridge. Besides his well-received early novels, with stories set in the waning days of Irish-American political power, Fleming has published acclaimed biographies of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin. He has written extensively on the American Revolution and both world wars. Seven of his novels trace the fortunes of one family in particular, the Stapletons, through different historical periods: "These novels are my exemplars of how people are hammered by history, tortured by it, absorbed by it. They say a lot about the American experience." Starting with the Revolution, Fleming says, Americans have been torn by what he calls "the great dichotomy:" the clash between American ideals and brutal political and economic realities. It was a conflict he saw firsthand as a sailor aboard the warship USS Topeka in the Pacific at the close of World War II, and later while he was conducting research for a history of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He lived at West Point from 1964 to 1968,) and interviewed officers and their families as the controversy over America's involvement in the Vietnam War intensified. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Fleming_(historian)

In 2006, Suroosh Alvi was one of a handful of journalists who was able to get into the massive guns market in Pakistan's tribal areas -- home base for the Taliban since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He returned to Pakistan this month and found the entire country was a "powder keg ready to explode." To see where VICE goes to next, check out: http://www.vice.com/the-vice-guide-to-travel

August 25th – This Day in Stock Market History For more, visit: https://www.begintoinvest.com/august-25/ August 25th, 1987 – The Dow Jones Industrial Average reaches record 2722.42, which would ultimately be the market’s high before the 1987 crash. However, despite the worst day in stock market history on October 19th, 1987, stocks would recover to their pre-crash 1987 levels in less than two years. The Dow would be back over 2,722 by August 24th, 1989. August 25th, 1995 – Berkshire Hathaway announces its purchase of GEICO for $70 per share, $2.3 billion. On this day 1995, Geico shares would rise $12.875 to $68.625 per share. Berkshire Hathaway shares (A-Class) would rise $600 to $25,400 per share. Buffett made his first purchase of GEICO for Berkshire in 1976 (500,000 shares at $2 1/8!). By 1982 Berkshire would accumulate 35% of GEICO shares, and build a position that would represent half of Berkshire’s equity investments! Then, GEICO began aggressively repurchasing its own shares, a move that would eventually result in Berkshire owning 51% of the company. On this day in 1995, Buffett bought the remaining 49%. Best August 25th in Dow Jones Industrial Average History: 1933 – Up 3.61%, 3.66 points. Worst August 25th in Dow Jones Industrial Average History: 2008 – Down 2.08%, 241.81 points. Monsanto was one of four groups to introduce genes into plants, and was among the first to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops. Monsanto was one of the first companies to apply the biotechnology industry business model to agriculture, using techniques developed by biotech drug companies. Monsanto's roles in agricultural changes, biotechnology products and lobbying of government agencies and roots as a chemical company have surrounded the company in controversies. The company once manufactured controversial products such as the insecticide DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange and recombinant bovine growth hormone. Its seed patenting model was criticized as biopiracy and a threat to biodiversity. In September 2016 Monsanto agreed to accept Bayer's offer to purchase the company for $66 billion, pending regulatory approval. Rare Things Sold on the Black Market

10:24
Governments might try to make laws in order to make it illegal to purchase certain goods and products but what they don’t know isn’t going to hurt them right? Rarer objects might be a little more difficult to obtain which will certainly add to their price once they find a potential buyer. Whether they’re rare antiquities acquired from looting museums, to certain types of cells which can actually make you look younger, here are rare things sold on the black market! But first, we asked you guys in our most insane private jets video which private jet you’d rather have, Air Force One, Trump Force One and Vlad Force one! We think killer wolf has the right answer here so we’ll go ahead give you a shout out in today’s video! Let us know in the comment section if you think any of these black market items deserve to be legal or why you think they should remain illegal and maybe we’ll feature you in an upcoming video. 13. Aztec Antiquities People who are able to steal artifacts from a lost civilization are really stealing more than just something with monetary value. It doesn’t have They’re stealing knowledge that just simply can’t be replaced. In Mexico City in 1985, 140 of the most valuable Aztec, Mayan and other pre columbian artifacts were from the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico on Christmas Eve! This was not a holly jolly christmas morning for anthropologists! It seems clear that the crooks studied their history and went right for all the wrong reasons. This was the largest heist on pre columbian artifacts ever! Many of the artifacts were made from valuable raw materials like gold or jade. This photo here show’s Pacal’s burial mask made of jade, to give you an idea what was robbed here! Officials couldn’t really put an exact number on how much the heist was worth because of how unique and historical important the items were. Some estimated as much as 32 million dollars but who knows how much they would sell for on the black market! Somehow the objects were recovered, but aztec antiquities are some of the most highly sought after on the black market. 12. Counterfeit Cash Many of us have been short on cash at times and kind of wish we could just print it out at home instead of having to go to work. But that’s against the law. Although the government has made steps in recent years to make our money less vulnerable to counterfeiters, we still come across it sometimes. The country of Peru seems to be one of the biggest leaders of this practice and in 2012, a raid took place in the capital city of Lima, where police found 2 million dollars in phony cash and 1.5 million euros. This is just a very small fraction of how much is made in this country. The laws for committing this crime in south america, is just a slap on the wrist, with the culprits only getting a warning their first time, and the 2nd time, only having to spend a few nights in jail. The notes would have most likely been used in a drug deal, and smuggled into other Central American countries. 11. Bearpaws It’s not just drugs customs and police are seizing. The wildlife black market is booming as well. Bearpaw bear parts are in high demand in China. The bearpaw soup has been a delicacy since china’s shang dynasty and was made more popular once King Zhou would partake in eating some. In 2013 Chinese officials caught two Russian men attempting to bring 213 severed bear paws into China along the Mongolian border. Once bear paws cross the border, their value increases 10 times since it’s used in a controversial soup. Bear paws can fetch a price of about 1000 bucks each in some cases. They can even be resold to be worth even 2000 dollars each making the business quite lucrative. The demand for this has skyrocketed in recent years and many believe this could lead to the black bear becoming endangered in parts of Asia. 10. Sea Cucumbers SEa cucumbers aren’t cucumbers of all and in fact, they’re bottom dwelling sea creatures somewhat similar to sea urchins or starfish. The demand for sea cucumbers is rising but people aren’t supposed to be eating them because they play a vital role in keeping large coral reefs alive. T’s gotten to be such a problem that even mexico is getting involved with shipping sea cucumber into China. Although they probably don’t look like something you want to eat, sea cucumber is said not only taste good but also be very nutritious, helping reduce the chance of getting heart disease, high in protein and even help with bone density. All those benefits would come at a high price of course. One Kilogram of Sea Cucumber can fetch a price anywhere from 435 dollars to 1000 plus. Just use your chopsticks carefully, because these things can get slippery!

How an Average Family in Tokyo Can Buy a New Home

11:57
Coming to Japan from Canada (and the crazy housing market that is Vancouver), I was surprised to find out that the average family could afford a brand new house, even in the city of Tokyo. In this video I explore how this is possible. CORRECTION: The stats I gave for median annual household incomes in the United States and Canada are not quite right. I explain why in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61FnnmvFhHY. What if home prices go up dramatically and rents don't? How can we compare home prices to rents to figure out what to do. This older tutorial (low-res, bad handwriting) walks us through this. It is about housing but similar thinking can be applied to any rent-vs-buy decision (spoiler alert, Sal did eventually buy a home). The formula for selling a million-dollar work of art

04:04
Some dead sharks are worth $12 million. The biggest factor in the price of art often isn't quality, or effort – it's branding. But when a new artist steps into the art market, he or she has no reputation – no branding. That's where art dealers come in. They promote, educate, and help artists to gain fame and success. To learn more about the economics of the art market, you can get Don Thompson's "The $12 Million Stuff Shark" here: https://www.amazon.com/Million-Stuffed-Shark-Economics-Contemporary/dp/0230620590 Vox.com is a news website that helps you cut through the noise and understand what's really driving the events in the headlines.
