Front-End Development, HTML & CSS, Javascript & jQuery by Jon Duckett | Book Review

05:56
Front End Development Book Review | HTML & CSS and JavaScript & JQuery by Jon Duckett. Learning is so important and although there is an abundance of online learning platforms for front-end development, a good book about HTML, CSS, and JavaScript may just be what the doctor ordered. I bought these book years ago and I have to say it’s refreshing to see a book about programming and code that is written by a human for actual humans. It’s billed as Don't forget to subscribe https://goo.gl/6vCw64 👍 HTML & CSS - http://amzn.to/2rTJuH7 JavaScript & JQuery - http://amzn.to/2slKsxk “A book about code that doesn't read like a 1980s VCR manual... It's not just for programmers, it's written and presented to make it easy for designers, bloggers, content and e-commerce managers, marketers to learn about the code used to write web pages…” I agree with that statement. ⭕The one book I regret not having as a beginning web developer || Jon Duckett JavaScript & jQuery

04:44
As self-taught web developers, we understand the need for quality educational investments. With the high costs of bootcamps, colleges, and online courses that still leave a lot of developers unemployed, even the most educated of developers often find themselves exploring the internet for additional resources. My gateway into web development were two books by Mark Myers. He is the author of the Smarter Way Series, and both his HTML/CSS book along with his JavaScript book advanced my learning like no other materials before it. They were also a really good deal at less than twenty dollars each. Then there was the Jon Duckett JavaScript & jQuery book. I'd heard a LOT of great things about it...But $40? Come on, now. That was a little expensive for me, especially since I was't 100% sure I wanted to do this as a career. Fast forward two years, and I finally got around to snagging it. My only regret? That I didn't buy it when I was an aspiring web developer. This is a beautiful book that is absolutely packed with must-know web development concepts concerning JavaScript and jQuery. And even though it's 2018 and we're looking away from jQuery, it still has its uses (it's also used a lot in previous coding projects, so knowledge of it is still important). In this video, I give a little show and tell of this book, and what I love about it. This enables developers to create abstractions for low-level interaction and animation, advanced effects and high-level, themeable widgets. The modular approach to the jQuery library allows the creation of powerful dynamic web pages and Web applications. The set of jQuery core features—DOM element selections, traversal and manipulation—enabled by its selector engine (named "Sizzle" from v1.3), created a new "programming style", fusing algorithms and DOM data structures. This style influenced the architecture of other JavaScript frameworks like YUI v3 and Dojo, later stimulating the creation of the standard Selectors API.[6] Microsoft and Nokia bundle jQuery on their platforms.[7] Microsoft includes it with Visual Studio[8] for use within Microsoft's ASP.NET AJAX and ASP.NET MVC frameworks while Nokia has integrated it into the Web Run-Time widget development platform.[9] Overview[edit] jQuery, at its core, is a Document Object Model (DOM) manipulation library. The DOM is a tree-structure representation of all the elements of a Web page. jQuery simplifies the syntax for finding, selecting, and manipulating these DOM elements. For example, jQuery can be used for finding an element in the document with a certain property (e.g. all elements with an h1 tag), changing one or more of its attributes (e.g. color, visibility), or making it respond to an event (e.g. a mouse click). jQuery also provides a paradigm for event handling that goes beyond basic DOM element selection and manipulation. The event assignment and the event callback function definition are done in a single step in a single location in the code. jQuery also aims to incorporate other highly used JavaScript functionality (e.g. fade ins and fade outs when hiding elements, animations by manipulating CSS properties). The principles of developing with jQuery are: Separation of JavaScript and HTML: The jQuery library provides simple syntax for adding event handlers to the DOM using JavaScript, rather than adding HTML event attributes to call JavaScript functions. Thus, it encourages developers to completely separate JavaScript code from HTML markup. Brevity and clarity: jQuery promotes brevity and clarity with features like chainable functions and shorthand function names. Elimination of cross-browser incompatibilities: The JavaScript engines of different browsers differ slightly so JavaScript code that works for one browser may not work for another. Like other JavaScript toolkits, jQuery handles all these cross-browser inconsistencies and provides a consistent interface that works across different browsers. Extensibility: New events, elements, and methods can be easily added and then reused as a plugin. History[edit] jQuery was originally released in January 2006 at BarCamp NYC by John Resig and was influenced by Dean Edwards' earlier cssQuery library.[10][11] It is currently maintained by a team of developers led by Timmy Willison (with the jQuery selector engine, Sizzle, being led by Richard Gibson). jQuery also has an interesting software license history.[12] Originally licensed under the CC BY-SA 2.5, it was relicensed to the MIT license in 2006.[13] At the end of 2006, it was dual-licensed under GPL and MIT licenses.[14] As this led to some confusion, in 2012 the GPL was dropped and is now only licensed under the MIT license.[15]

jQuery add event handler to dynamically created element

09:15
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/04/jquery-add-event-handler-to-dynamically.html In this video we will discuss, how to add event handlers to dynamically created elements. Let us understand this with an example. The following example, allows us to dynamically create new list item (li), attach a click event handler and add it to the unordered list (ul). This happens when you click "Add a New List Item" button. The problem with this approach is that we are binding a click event handler to every list item. This means if you have 500 list items, then there will be 500 event handlers in the memory and this may negatively affect the performance of your application. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { var newListItem = $('<li>New List Item</li>').on('click', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('ul').append(newListItem); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html> A better way of doing the same from a performance standpoint is shown below. In this example, the click event handler is attached to the listitem (li) parent element (ul). Even if you have 500 list items, there is only one click event handler in memory. So how does this work 1. When you click on a list item (li), the event gets bubbled up to its parent (ul) as the list item (li) does not have an event handler 2. The bubbled event is handled by the the parent (ul) element, as it has a click event handler. 3. When a new list item is added dynamicaly, you don't have to add the click event handler to it. Since the newly created list item (li) is added to the same parent element (ul), the click event of this list item also gets bubbled upto the same parent and will be handled by it. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('ul').on('click', 'li', function () { $(this).fadeOut(500); }); $('#btnAdd').on('click', function () { $('ul').append('<li>New List Item</li>'); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input id="btnAdd" type="button" value="Add a New List Item" /> <ul> <li>List Item</li> <li>List Item</li> </ul> </body> </html>

Horizontal jQuery Accordion

25:22
A Horizontal Accordion displays several elements at once. They expland and contract to focus on specific element. In this video tutorial, I use jQuery, HTML and minimal CSS. You can use this in a page design to display several popular posts or pages. Then users can click on each one to expand it and read more about that item. This allows the storage of a lot of info in a small space. The horizontal accordions tend to be used more with photographs. There is one small problem with this accordion. It flickers in Firefox. Not a lot. And only if the first item you choose is the last item in the accordion. It's a weird Firefox quirk. Firefox just seems to enjoy flickering. So it that's a big deal, don't use it. This accordion works in Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer 9 and above. I also do a cool trick where I turn the text sideways with cascading style sheets! http://www.technoblogical.com/web-design/ Providing training since last Tuesday http://www.technoblogical.com/ Thanks for watching!

jQuery each function

Use of jQuery each function 2. How to exit from each function in jQuery 3. Implicit iteration in jQuery 4. Performance considerations when using jquery each function jQuery each function is used to iterate over the items in a collection. For each item in the collection the anonymous function is called. The index of the element and the element itself are passed to the anonymous function. $('li').each(function (index, element) { alert(index + ' : ' + $(element).text()); }); To refer to the current element that we are iterating over you can also use this keyword. $('li').each(function (index) { alert(index + ' : ' + $(this).text()); }); If you don't care about the index and just need the text of the list item, then you can get rid of the index parameter $('li').each(function () { alert($(this).text()); }); Replace < with LESSTHAN symbol and > with GREATERTHAN symbol How to exit from each function in jQuery : To exit from each function, return false. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { if ($(this).text() == 'UK') { return false; } alert($(this).text()); }); }); </script> Implicit iteration in jQuery : The $('li') selector returns all list item elements. Notice that we are calling the css() jquery function on the jquery collection itself. In this case, css() method implicitly iterates over each element in the entire collection. <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').css('color', 'red'); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <ul> <li>US</li> <li>India</li> <li>UK</li> <li>Canada</li> <li>Australia</li> </ul> </body> </html> There is no need to explicitly iterate over each element in the collection. Most jQuery methods implicitly iterate over the entire collection. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { $(this).css('color', 'red'); }); }); </script> Performance considerations when using jquery each function <html> <head> <title></title> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('li').each(function () { $('#divResult').html($('#divResult').html() + '<br/>' + $(this).text()) }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <ul> <li>US</li> <li>India</li> <li>UK</li> <li>Canada</li> <li>Australia</li> </ul> <div id="divResult"></div> </body> </html> From a performance standpoint, there are 2 problems with the above code. 1. jQuery needs to search the DOM for div element with id = divResult, for each list item in the collection. Since there are 5 list items, jquery searches the DOM 5 times for the same div element with id = divResult. The performance of the above code can be improved by caching the divResult element. 2. The DOM element (div element with id = divResult) is being updated on each iteration. Again this is bad for performance. To improve the performance build a string variable with the required data on each iteration of the loop. Once the loop has completed, update the DOM element with the value that is present in the string varibale. This will ensure that the DOM element is updated only once and this is much better for performance. The following is much better from a performance standpoint. <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var result = ''; $('li').each(function () { result += '<br/>' + $(this).text(); }); $('#divResult').html(result); }); </script>

This is similar to Facebook. As you scroll down on the page more data will be loaded. When the page is initially loaded we want to retrieve and display the first 50 rows from the database table tblEmployee. As we scroll down and when we hit the bottom of the page we want to load the next set of 50 rows. Stored procedure Create procedure spGetEmployees @PageNumber int, @PageSize int as Begin Declare @StartRow int Declare @EndRow int Set @StartRow = ((@PageNumber - 1) * @PageSize) + 1 Set @EndRow = @PageNumber * @PageSize; WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT Id, Name, Gender, Salary, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY ID ASC) AS ROWNUMBER From tblEmployee ) SELECT * FROM RESULT WHERE ROWNUMBER BETWEEN @StartRow AND @EndRow End HTML page <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var currentPage = 1; loadPageData(currentPage); $(window).scroll(function () { if ($(window).scrollTop() == $(document).height() - $(window).height()) { currentPage += 1; loadPageData(currentPage); } }); function loadPageData(currentPageNumber) { $.ajax({ url: 'EmployeeService.asmx/GetEmployees', method: 'post', dataType: "json", data: { pageNumber: currentPageNumber, pageSize: 50 }, success: function (data) { var employeeTable = $('#tblEmployee tbody'); $(data).each(function (index, emp) { employeeTable.append('<tr><td>' + emp.ID + '</td><td>' + emp.Name + '</td><td>' + emp.Gender + '</td><td>' + emp.Salary + '</td></tr>'); }); }, error: function (err) { alert(err); } }); } }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <h1>The data will be loaded on demand as you scroll down the page</h1> <table id="tblEmployee" border="1" style="border-collapse:collapse; font-size:xx-large"> <thead> <tr> <th>ID</th> <th>Name</th> <th>Gender</th> <th>Salary</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody></tbody> </table> </body> </html>

We want to retrieve data from the following database table tblEmployee using asp.net web service and jQuery AJAX Step 1 : Create SQL Server table and insert employee data Step 2 : Create a stored procedure to retrieve employee data by ID Step 3 : Create new asp.net web application project. Name it Demo. Step 4 : Include a connection string in the web.config file to your database. Step 5 : Add a class file to the project. Name it Employee.cs. Copy and paste the following code. namespace Demo { public class Employee { public int ID { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public string Gender { get; set; } public int Salary { get; set; } } } Step 6 : Add a new WebService (ASMX). Name it EmployeeService.asmx. Copy and paste the following code. using System; using System.Configuration; using System.Data; using System.Data.SqlClient; using System.Web.Services; namespace Demo { [WebService(Namespace = "http://tempuri.org/")] [WebServiceBinding(ConformsTo = WsiProfiles.BasicProfile1_1)] [System.ComponentModel.ToolboxItem(false)] [System.Web.Script.Services.ScriptService] public class EmployeeService : System.Web.Services.WebService { [WebMethod] public Employee GetEmployeeById(int employeeId) { Employee employee = new Employee(); string cs = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings["DBCS"].ConnectionString; using (SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection(cs)) { SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("spGetEmployeeById", con); cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure; SqlParameter parameter = new SqlParameter(); parameter.ParameterName = "@Id"; parameter.Value = employeeId; cmd.Parameters.Add(parameter); con.Open(); SqlDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader(); while(rdr.Read()) { employee.ID = Convert.ToInt32(rdr["Id"]); employee.Name = rdr["Name"].ToString(); employee.Gender = rdr["Gender"].ToString(); employee.Salary = Convert.ToInt32(rdr["Salary"]); } } return employee; } } } Step 6 : Add an HTML page to the ASP.NET project. Copy and paste the following HTML and jQuery code <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#btnGetEmployee').click(function () { var empId = $('#txtId').val(); $.ajax({ url: 'EmployeeService.asmx/GetEmployeeById', data: { employeeId: empId }, method: 'post', dataType: 'xml', success: function (data) { var jQueryXml = $(data); $('#txtName').val(jQueryXml.find('Name').text()); $('#txtGender').val(jQueryXml.find('Gender').text()); $('#txtSalary').val(jQueryXml.find('Salary').text()); }, error: function (err) { alert(err); } }); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> ID : <input id="txtId" type="text" style="width:100px" /> <input type="button" id="btnGetEmployee" value="Get Employee" /> <br /><br /> <table border="1" style="border-collapse:collapse"> <tr> <td>Name</td> <td><input id="txtName" type="text" /></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Gender</td> <td><input id="txtGender" type="text" /></td> </tr> <tr> <td>Salary</td> <td><input id="txtSalary" type="text" /></td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> In our next video we will discuss how to call an asp.net web service that returns JSON data using jQuery AJAX.
