Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/06/difference-between-window-height-and.html In this video we will discuss 1. Difference between window height and document height 2. How to detect if the user has scrolled to the bottom of the page $(window).height() - Returns height of the browser window i.e browser viewport $(document).height() - Returns height of HTML document $(window).scrollTop() - Returns the current vertical position of the scroll bar What is the difference between window height and document height The window height is what you see (i.e browser viewport), but the document height includes everything below or above the visible area. How to detect if the user has scrolled to the bottom of the page Here is the formula to detect if the user has scrolled to the bottom of the page if (verticalScrollBarPosition == $(document).height() - $(window).height()) { floatingDiv.html('Reached the bottom of the page'); } Why window height and document height are the same in Google chrome Without DOCTYPE tag Chrome reports the same value for both window height and document height. Include the following DOCTYPE declaration <!DOCTYPE html> Example used in the demo <!DOCTYPE html> <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var floatingDiv = $("#divfloating"); var floatingDivPosition = floatingDiv.position(); $(window).scroll(function () { var scrollPosition = $(window).scrollTop(); if (scrollPosition >= floatingDivPosition.top) { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'fixed', 'top': 3 }); } else { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'relative', 'top': 0 }); } floatingDiv.html('Window Height = ' + $(window).height() + '<br/>' + 'Document Height = ' + $(document).height() + '<br/>' + 'Vertical Scrollbar Position = ' + scrollPosition ); if (scrollPosition == $(document).height() - $(window).height()) { floatingDiv.html('Reached the bottom of the page'); } }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial;"> <table align="center" border="1" style="border-collapse:collapse"> <tr> <td style="width:500px"> <div> Main Page Content </div> </td> <td style="width:150px; vertical-align:top"> Side panel content <br /><br /> <div id="divfloating" style="background-color:silver; width:150px; height:150px"> Floating Div - Keeps floating as you scroll down the page </div> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html> In our next video we will discuss how to load data like facebook as you scroll down the page.

Using regular expressions in JavaScript

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/01/using-regular-expressions-in-javascript.html What is a Regular Expression A regular expression is a sequence of characters that forms a search pattern. Let us understand the use of regular expressions with an example. The following strings contain words and numbers. From the string we want to extract all the numbers. Bsically the program should work with any string. Mark-9 Tim-890 Sam-10 Sara-9902 Result : 9, 890, 10, 9902 908ABC12XYZ34 Result : 908, 12, 34 $1 $2 $901 ABC(100) Result : 1, 2, 901, 100 Here is what we want the page to do 1. User enters the string in the first textbox 2. When "Process String" button is clicked, the numbers should be extracted from the string and displayed in the text area element. It will be very complex and error prone if we have to achieve this without using regular expressions. [input type="text" id="txtBox" style="width:250px" /] [br /][br /] [input type="button" value="Process String" onclick="processString()" style="width:250px" /] [br /][br /] [textarea id="txtArea" rows="4" cols="30"][/textarea] [script type="text/javascript"] function processString() { // Clear the textarea element document.getElementById("txtArea").value = ""; // Retrieve the user intput from the textbox var inputString = document.getElementById("txtBox").value; // Regular expression should be in 2 forward slashes // // Letter g at the end of the regular expression performs a global match // match() method returns all substrings that match the given regular expression var result = inputString.match(/\d+/g); if (result != null) { // Add the retrieved numbers to the textarea element for (var i = 0; i [ result.length; i++) { document.getElementById("txtArea").value += result[i] + "\r\n"; } } } [/script]

JavaScript substring example

Since it's job is to return the last index of the specified value, this method searches the given string from the end to the beginning and returns the index of the first match it finds. This method returns -1 if the specified value is not present in the given string. Example : Retrieve the last index position of dot (.) in the given string var url = "http://www.csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com"; alert(url.lastIndexOf(".")); Output : 42 Simple real time example where lastIndexOf and substring methods can be used In the head section of the webform, include the following script section function getDomainName() { var url = document.getElementById("txtURL").value; var domainName = url.substr(url.lastIndexOf(".")); document.getElementById("txtDomian").value = domainName; } Finally set the onclick attriibute of the button to call the JavaScript function [input type="button" value="Get top level domain" style="width: 300px" onclick="getDomainName()" /]

jquery floating div

13:36
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/05/jquery-floating-div.html In this video we will discuss, how to create floating div using jQuery. We want the div element in the sidebar to be floating and always visible as we scroll down the page. Example : In this example we are using position() and scrollTop() functions. The object returned by position() function has top and left properties, which can be used to know the current top and left positions (coordinates). We are using this function to find the top position of the div element that we want to keep floating as we scroll down. To get the current vertical position of the scroll bar, we are using scrollTop() function. As we scroll and when the current vertical position of the scroll bar becomes GREATER THAN the top position of the div element, then we want the div element to start floating. To do this set position style to fixed. A fixed position element is positioned relative to the browser window. So as you scroll down it will be floating in the browser window. If the current vertical position of the scroll bar becomes LESS THAN the top position of the div element, then we don't want the div element to float, so we set position style to relative. A relative position element is positioned relative to itself. So if you set position to relative and top to 0, it will continue to stay where it is without floating. <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { var floatingDiv = $("#divfloating"); var floatingDivPosition = floatingDiv.position(); $(window).scroll(function () { var scrollPosition = $(window).scrollTop(); if (scrollPosition >= floatingDivPosition.top) { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'fixed', 'top' : 3 }); } else { floatingDiv.css({ 'position': 'relative', 'top' : 0 }); } }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial;"> <table align="center" border="1" style="border-collapse:collapse"> <tr> <td style="width:500px"> Main Page Content </td> <td style="width:150px; vertical-align:top"> Side panel content <br /><br /> <div id="divfloating" style="background-color:silver; width:150px; height:150px"> Floating Div - Keeps floating as you scroll down the page </div> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>

JavaScript popup window

11:54
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/01/javascript-popup-window_22.html In this video we will discuss, how to open a popup window using JavaScript. To open a popup window, use window.open() method. All the parameters are optional. window.open(URL, name, features, replace) URL - URL of the page to open. If URL is not specified, a new window with about:blank is opened name - Specifies the target attribute or the name of the window. _blank - URL is loaded into a new window. This is the default value if not specified. _parent - URL is loaded into the parent frame _self - URL replaces the current page _top - URL replaces any framesets that may be loaded name - name of the window features - Must be a comma-separated list. Some of the browsers does not support these features. menubar (yes/no) - Shows or hides the browser menu toolbar (yes/no) - Shows or hides the browser navigation bar location (yes/no) - Shows or hides the address field status (yes/no) - Shows or hides the status bar resizable (yes/no) - Whether or not the window is resizable scrollbars (yes/no) - Whether or not to display scroll bars top(pixels) - The top position of the window left(pixels) - The left position of the window height (pixels) - The height of the new window width (pixels) - The width of the new window replace - Specifies whether the URL creates a new entry or replaces the current entry in the browser history. Works only if the url is loaded into the same window. true - URL replaces the current document in the browser history list false - URL creates a new entry in the browser history list No parameters are passed to window.open() method. Since URL is not specified, a new window with about:blank will be opened. [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="window.open()" /] Most modern browsers open new tabs instead of separate windows. If you want to open the popup in a new window, one workaround I have found is to specify the URL, name, and features(height and width) parameters. This may not work in all browsers and it also depends on user's browser preferences. [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="window.open('http://google.com', '_blank', 'height=200,width=200')" /] When name parameter is set to _self, the new window replaces the current window [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="window.open('http://google.com', '_self')" /] Specify where you want the new popup window to be positioned using top and left features. [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="window.open('http://google.com', 'My Window', 'height=300,width=300, top=400, left=400')" /] Disable scrollbars and resizing. Works in IE but not in Chrome. [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="window.open('http://google.com', 'My Window', 'height=300,width=300, scrollbars=no, resizable=no')" /] To close pouup use window.close() method. [input type="button" value="Open popup" onclick="openPopup()" /] [input type="button" value="Close popup" onclick="closePopup()" /] [script type="text/javascript"] var popup; function openPopup() { popup = window.open("http://google.com","My Window", "height=300,width=300") } function closePopup() { popup.close(); } [/script]

Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/01/how-to-create-image-slideshow-using.html In this video, we will discuss creating a simple image slideshow using JavaScript. We will be using setInterval() and clearInterval() JavaScript methods to achieve this. We discussed these functions in detail in Part 34 of JavaScript Tutorial. When you click "Start Slide Show" button the image slideshow should start and when you click the "Stop Slide Show" button the image slideshow should stop. For the purpose of this demo we will be using the images that can be found on any windows machine at the following path. C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures At the above location, on my machine I have 8 images. Here are the steps to create the image slideshow using JavaScript. Step 1 : Open Visual Studio and create a new empty asp.net web application project. Name it Demo. Step 2 : Right click on the Project Name in Solution Explorer in Visual Studio and create a new folder with name = Images. Step 3 : Copy the 8 images from C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures to Images folder in your project. Change the names of the images to 1.jpg, 2.jpg etc. Step 4 : Right click on the Project Name in Solution Explorer in Visual Studio and add a new HTML Page. It should automatically add HTMLPage1.htm. Step 5 : Copy and paste the following HTML and JavaScript code in HTMLPage1.htm page. [img id="image" src="/Images/1.jpg" style="width: 150px; height: 150px" /] [br /] [input type="button" value="Start Slide Show" onclick="startImageSlideShow()" /] [input type="button" value="Stop Slide Show" onclick="stopImageSlideShow()" /] [script type="text/javascript"] var intervalId; function startImageSlideShow() { intervalId = setInterval(setImage, 500); } function stopImageSlideShow() { clearInterval(intervalId); } function setImage() { var imageSrc = document.getElementById("image").getAttribute("src"); var currentImageNumber = imageSrc.substring(imageSrc.lastIndexOf("/") + 1, imageSrc.lastIndexOf("/") + 2); if (currentImageNumber == 8) { currentImageNumber = 0; } document.getElementById("image").setAttribute("src", "/Images/" + (Number(currentImageNumber) + 1) + ".jpg"); } [/script] Finally run the application and test it.

Bringing back the 1990s: The revenge of JavaScript Style Sheets (Steve Kinney)

40:00
Talk given at Full Stack Fest 2017: https://fullstackfest.com JavaScript Style Sheets (JSSS) was a technology introduced by Netscape in 1996. Chances are, you’ve never heard of JSSS, since it was available in Netscape Communicator 4.0. They allowed you to define custom styling rules for your web pages. You’re probably more familiar with its competitor at the time—Cascading Style Sheets. JavaScript Style Sheets were pretty cool, though. JSSS allowed the developer to use the full weight of the language, including functions and conditionals to style the DOM. You could use variables and conditionals. You could calculate values dynamically. You had the weight and power of the JavaScript programming language at your disposal. The obvious spoiler alert here is that CSS won and JSSS lost, right? It’s not that simple. A lot of the ideas from JSSS have slowly been creeping back into our toolset. SASS brought a lot of programming logic back into styling our applications. CSS has even picked up variables and the ability to do calculations along the way. Finally, the React community has been—maybe unknowingly—bringing JSSS back from the dead. In this talk, we’ll take a good hard look at JSSS and discuss what it got right and wrong, why CSS won, and the ways in which JSSS has had enduring legacy after its untimely demise. Steve is a senior front end engineer at SendGrid where is works on building a rich WYSIWYG editor for building HTML emails. Previously, he was the director of the front-end engineering program at the Turing School of Software and Design in Denver, Colorado where he taught JavaScript and other technologies to aspiring developers from across the country. He is a recovering New York City public school teacher and recently learned how to drive a car.

jquery animate function

The following example animates the div element, while changing the font-size property of the div element from its initial size to 50 pixels over a period of 2000 milli-seconds (2 seconds). <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#myButton').click(function () { $('#myDiv').animate({ 'font-size': '50' }, 2000); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <input type="button" id="myButton" value="Animate" /> <br /><br /> <div id="myDiv"> jQuery animate function </div> </body> </html> Syntax of jquery animate function .animate( properties [, duration ] [, easing ] [, complete ] ) Animate function has 4 parameters. Only the first parameter (properties) is the required parameter. Rest 3 are optional. properties - An object of CSS properties and values duration - The duration for animation in milliseconds. Default is 400. easing - Easing function to use for the transition. Default is swing. You could also use linear. complete - A function to call once the animation is complete What is jQuery easing Easing is a technique where the speed and/or direction of animation are changed while the animation is in progress. Easing can make the animation start off slow and gradually speed up, start up fast and gradually slow down, and a whole host of other effects. The difference between linear and swing easing is very subtle. The following page shows all the easings provided by jQuery UI https://jqueryui.com/easing The following example increases the height and width of the image to 400 pixels on mouseover. On mouseout the height and width are reduced to 100 pixels. <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#myImage').on({ mouseover: function () { $(this).animate({ 'height': 400, 'width': 400, }, 3000); }, mouseout: function () { $(this).animate({ 'height': 100, 'width': 100, }, 3000); } }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <img id="myImage" height="100" width="100" src="/Images/Tulips.jpg" /> </body> </html> In the following example, several calls to animate() method are chained together. By default these calls are placed into a queue to be executed one after the other in series rather than executing all of them simultaneously in parallel. <html> <head> <script src="jquery-1.11.2.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function () { $('#myImage').click(function () { $(this) .animate({ 'left': '300' }) .animate({ 'top': '200' }) .animate({ 'left': '10' }) .animate({ 'top': '10' }); }); }); </script> </head> <body style="font-family:Arial"> <img id="myImage" height="100" width="100" style="position:absolute" src="/Images/Tulips.jpg" /> </body> </html> Please note: By default, all HTML elements have a static position, and cannot be moved. To modify the position , set the CSS position property of the element to fixed, absolute or relative.

What is $document ready function in jquery

10:24
Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/03/what-is-documentreadyfunction-in-jquery.html In this video we will discuss 1. What is $(document).ready(function() in jquery and when to use it 2. Difference between $(window).load and $(document).ready $(document).ready is a jQuery event. It fires as soon as the DOM is loaded and ready to be manipulated by script. This is the earliest point in the page load process where the script can safely access elements in the page's html dom. This event is fired before all the images, css etc.. are fully loaded. The following example works, because the jquery code that adds the event handler to the button is inside the ready() function, which ensures that the DOM is fully loaded before this piece of code is executed, so the JavaScript can find the button element in the DOM and adds the click event hanlder. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="Scripts/jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(document).ready(function () { $('#button1').click(function () { alert('jQuery Tuorial'); }); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Me" /] [/body] [/html] In the following example, we have removed the ready() method. When you click the button now, you don't get the alert. This is because the jQuery code is present before the button element, so by the time the jQuery code is executed the button element is not loaded into DOM. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="Scripts/jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $('#button1').click(function () { alert('jQuery Tuorial'); }); [/script] [/head] [body] [input id="button1" type="button" value="Click Me" /] [/body] [/html] To make this example work, you have 2 options 1. Place your jQuery code in $(document).ready function OR 2. Place your script at the bottom of the page just before the closing [/body] element $(window).load event fires when the DOM and all the content on the page (images, css etc) is fully loaded. Since the window load event waits for images, css etc to be fully loaded, this event fires after ready event. The following example proves the above point. When you run the page with the following script, notice that the alert in ready function is displayed before the alert in load function. [script type="text/javascript"] $(window).load(function () { alert('Window loaded'); }); $(document).ready(function () { alert('DOM Loaded and ready'); }); [/script] In most cases, the script can be run as soon as the DOM hierarchy has been fully constructed. So ready() is usually the best place to write your JavaScript code. However, in your application there could be scenarios where you should be using $(window).load over $(document).ready. For example, let's say we want to display the actual image dimensions (Height and Width). To get the actual image dimensions, we will have to wait until the image is fully loded, so the jQuery code to get the height and width should be in $(window).load event. Example : If you use $(document).ready() instead of $(window).load() the height and width will be displayed as 0. [html] [head] [title][/title] [script src="Scripts/jquery-1.11.2.js"][/script] [script type="text/javascript"] $(window).load(function (){ $('#div1').html("Height = " + $('#Image1').height() + "[br/]" + "Width = " + $('#Image1').width()) }); [/script] [/head] [body] [div id="div1"][/div] [img src="Chrysanthemum.jpg" id="Image1" /] [/body] [/html]
