Once formed, they climb back towards the surface. On their way, cap rocks can impede their progress and they accumulate in reservoir rocks. Here they constitute hydrocarbon fields, which can be identified by interpreting seismic data (a sort of echography). The data is obtained with the help of a seismic ship. To confirm the interpretations of seismic data, two types of drilling gear exist. Each is adapted to a range of depth of water (down to more than 2500 meters). The platform seen here is a semi-submersible, which floats and retains its stabilised position by means of anchors fixed on the seabed. Platforms at sea are used not only for drilling but also for the production of hydrocarbons. This production consists of the separation of oil, gas and water, before the oil and gas is taken by pipeline towards a mainland terminal. Where it is impossible or too expensive to link the field to the coast by a pipeline, an FPSO ship is used (Floating Production Storage and Offloading barge). Onboard, the hydrocarbons and the water are separated. The oil is stored prior to being loaded on tankers and the gas is re-injected into the reservoir rocks. Gas from a field is taken to land through an underground gasoduct to a processing plant. There, if the gas is to be transported by sea, it is converted into liquid obtained by cooling it down to --163°C. When it arrives at the plant terminal, the liquid natural gas (LNG) is returned to its gaseous state in a re-gasification plant, before being introduced into the local gasoduct network. The LNG is stored in tanks before re-gasification. The crude oil is transported in a petroleum tanker, the capacity of which can attain 200 000 tons. It is commonly called a "super- tanker". The terminals capable of receiving such giants are few and far between. The ships used to transport the crude oil produced on an FPSO ship are of a much smaller capacity. The crude oil, before being refined, is stored in the port in the large capacity tanks. The natural gas is preserved in reservoirs (artificial or natural). It is ready to be injected by pumping into the gasoduct network for industrial and domestic use or as fuel in power-generating stations. As far as the crude oil goes, it is transported by oleoduct to the refinery. There it undergoes a number of transformations and blending. Moreover, as you can see from the test made on a Bosch engine test bench, the use of the additive enables you to get some more horse powers and to reach speeds that are more than 10 km/h higher, besides a more regular engine operation. This allows to further reduce LPG consumpion, with an estimated saving of 5-10% on cars with a mileage higher than 30.000 km. Shake well before use. Put the rubber hood onto the loading point and press down for about 30 seconds, so that the spray can empties completely. Perdido is the deepest floating oil rig (platform) in the world at a water depth of about 2450 meters operated by the Shell Oil Company in the Gulf of Mexico. The Perdido is located in the Perdido fold belt which is a rich discovery of crude oil and natural gas that lies in water that is nearly 8000 feet deep. The platform's peak production will be 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. At 267 meters, the Perdido is nearly as tall as the Eiffel Tower. An oil rig is a large structure with facilities to drill wells, to extract and process oil and natural gas, and to temporarily store product until it can be brought to shore for refining and marketing. Heavier fractions (kerosene, diesel) are used as fuels and lubricating oils as well as to boost petrol production by cracking the larger molecules into smaller fragments. It shows the composition of a typical Australian crude oil and the end use of petroleum products. Although alkanes are useful as fuels, alkanes are unreactive and as a consequence not very useful starting materials for the petrochemical industry. Alkenes however, with their reactive double bond, are ideal starting molecules for synthesis reactions. Ethene (ethylene) and propene (propylene) In particular, are important raw materials for the production of a huge range of synthetic carbon compounds including plastics, pharmaceuticals, insecticides and industrial chemicals. Ethene is the most versatile and widely used raw material in the petrochemical industry. However because very little ethene is found in natural gas or crude oil, it must be produced from other hydrocarbons by a process known as ‘cracking’. ‘Cracking’ is a chemical process by which hydrocarbons with higher molecular masses are converted to hydrocarbons of lower molecular mass. During this process chemical bonds within the hydrocarbon molecules are broken. Since ethene is a very simple molecule it can be synthesised from many different hydrocarbons. Ethene is usually produced in one of two ways: • catalytic cracking of some of the fractions separated during petroleum refining, or • steam (thermal) cracking of ethane and propane from natural gas deposits. Catalytic cracking and petroleum fractions: The proportions of different fractions obtained by the fractional distillation of petroleum usually do not match the demands of the market. There is greater demand for some fractions than for others. For example, the market for the gasoline fraction used as petrol for motor vehicles is huge but the demand for higher boiling point fractions is not as great even though these heavier fractions may make up more than 50% of the crude oil. Oil refineries have developed methods in which fractions containing hydrocarbons of higher molecular mass can be ‘cracked’ to produce hydrocarbons with a lower molecular mass. The fractions used (called feedstock) are the higher molecular mass fractions for which there is less market demand. The products of cracking include short chain alkanes that can be used as petrol, branched chain alkanes that improve the performance of petrol, alkenes, particularly ethene (ethylene) and propene (propylene), and hydrogen. The following equation represents the cracking of decane to produce octane and ethene. Cracking of petroleum fractions was first achieved by heating the fraction to very high temperatures in the absence of air. This process, called thermal cracking, was very expensive because of the energy required to maintain these high temperatures. It was also difficult to control the production of the end products as there are many different places where bond breaking could occur. An important development was the use of catalysts, which allowed the process to be carried out at much lower temperatures. This process, called catalytic cracking or ‘cat cracking', is carried out in a catalytic cracker like the one. Many gas reactions in industry are catalysed using solid inorganic catalysts onto which the gaseous reactants are adsorbed. These catalysts adsorb the reactants, thereby weakening their bonds and reducing the activation energy for the reaction. The main catalysts for the catalytic cracking of petroleum fractions are a group of silicate minerals called zeolites. Zeolites are crystalline substances composed of aluminium, silicon and oxygen. The catalyst is usually in the form of a fine powder that is circulated with the feedstock in the catalytic cracker. Zeolite crystals have a three-dimensional network structure containing a large number of tiny pores or channels similar to honeycomb. The reactant molecules are adsorbed in these pores where their reactions are catalysed. It is possible to synthesise zeolites with pores of different sizes. Specific zeolites have been developed that can be used with different feedstock and provide greater control of the products formed under different conditions of temperature and pressure. Steam Cracking of ethane and propane: The second method of ethene production involves converting ethane and propane to ethene by a process known as steam cracking. This is a form of thermal cracking and is the major source of ethene in the petrochemical industry. Ethane from natural gas deposits is fed a hot metal tube with steam.

In this video I show fixing an LPG vaporiser and talk about other common faults and fixes for car LPG injection systems. LPG systems for cars are great at swing money, but do need some maintenance. In the ten years of maintaining this car it has been mainly the injectors and vaporiser/reducer that has needed fixes or improvements. Please take care not to release large amount of Lpg gas. Work outdoors, don't smoke! The LPG system should have cut out solenoid valves at the tank and before and after the vaporiser, which means that when the ignition is off the gas supply will be isolated at all sections of the system. Check that this is the case. If you do that it is safe enough to work on. It is however your responsibility and no liability for damage is accepted for any advice implied from watching this. A recent bulletin issued by the Department of Health (DoH) on the supposed health risks of using Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) to power motor vehicles is apparently causing an uproar in the local LPG industry. Industry insiders called the DoH warning "alarmist" and said that it may have come as a result of intense lobbying by certain oil companies. "Oil firms that have not jumped into the LPG bandwagon will continue to lose market share as the transport sector and even private motorists turn to using LPG," the same insiders said. The DoH warning was reportedly based on numerous complaints of headaches, nausea and respiratory problems by drivers of LPG-converted taxi cabs. Meanwhile, Gates LPG Conversion proprietor Jere Myles Fregil told viewers of Practical Business (www.practicalbusiness.tv) last October 25 that the governments of several developed countries are actually giving tax incentives to motorists who convert their cars to run on LPG. He explained that health-related complaints associated with LPG-converted vehicles are more likely due to cheap or faulty conversions, which often lead to gas leaks.
