Diffusion of Innovation Theory : The Adoption Curve

03:34

Early adopters are quick to try a new product before anyone else while laggards are the last to try something and may not try it at all. In this short video we introduce you to each of these different types of people in society and explain why they try new things when they do.

PRODUCT-LEVEL INNOVATIVENESS

05:48
http://academlib.com/3683/management/signal_interpretation#360 Introducing a new product to a market is no trivial act. Such a behavior represents the physical manifestation of the considerable time, energy, knowledge, and capital committed to the research, development, and marketing of the product. As such, new product introductions are credible commitments that have particular significance among observers of the innovator firm's behavior.22 In the context of signaling theory, the significance of credible commitments is that behaviors backed by tangible decisions lend credence to the behaviors and are therefore given greater weight in signal interpretation. For example, in the mid-1990s when Apple Computer was struggling, Microsoft publicly announced its intention to continue developing its popular Microsoft Office suite for the Macintosh platform. The announcement was later supported by Microsoft taking an equity position in Apple. Many analysts interpreted this investment as a demonstrable, or credible, commitment of Microsoft's long-term commitment to building products for the Macintosh platform. Given that new product introductions inherently represent specific and tangible resource commitments made by the innovator firm, even allowing for differences in the scale of the new introduction (i.e., a regional versus global product launch), such introductions are ripe for signal interpretation. ...

ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL

01:09
http://academlib.com/3684/management/organiational_level#371 I n an imitation decision, there are additional considerations beyond those that exist at the level of the new product offering. Innovation does not occur in a vacuum, and although parsing information at the product level is vital, such information is inextricably confounded with the firm introducing the innovation. Indeed, there is arguably considerable informational value in understanding the characteristics of the innovator firm itself from the signals it sends by introducing innovative new products. Thus, while considering the innovativeness of a new product is necessary when developing an imitation strategy, it is not sufficient. We suggest therefore that prospective imitators go beyond the product level and look for insights at the organizational level of the innovator firm in crafting a prospective imitation response. Specifically, we suggest two characteristics of the innovator: its innovative history, and its market competency, as salient organizational influences on imitation decision making. ...

What is DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS? What does DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS mean?

04:13
What is DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS? What does DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS mean? DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS meaning - DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS definition - DIFFUSION OF INNOVATIONS explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Diffusion of innovations is a theory that seeks to explain how, why, and at what rate new ideas and technology spread. Everett Rogers, a professor of communication studies, popularized the theory in his book Diffusion of Innovations; the book was first published in 1962, and is now in its fifth edition (2003). Rogers argues that diffusion is the process by which an innovation is communicated over time among the participants in a social system. The origins of the diffusion of innovations theory are varied and span multiple disciplines. Rogers proposes that four main elements influence the spread of a new idea: the innovation itself, communication channels, time, and a social system. This process relies heavily on human capital. The innovation must be widely adopted in order to self-sustain. Within the rate of adoption, there is a point at which an innovation reaches critical mass. The categories of adopters are innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. Diffusion manifests itself in different ways and is highly subject to the type of adopters and innovation-decision process. The criterion for the adopter categorization is innovativeness, defined as the degree to which an individual adopts a new idea. The concept of diffusion was first studied by the French sociologist Gabriel Tarde in late 19th century and by German and Austrian anthropologists and geographers such as Friedrich Ratzel and Leo Frobenius. The study of diffusion of innovations took off in the subfield of rural sociology in the midwestern United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Agriculture technology was advancing rapidly, and researchers started to examine how independent farmers were adopting hybrid seeds, equipment, and techniques. A study of the adoption of hybrid corn seed in Iowa by Ryan and Gross (1943) solidified the prior work on diffusion into a distinct paradigm that would be cited consistently in the future. Since its start in rural sociology, Diffusion of Innovations has been applied to numerous contexts, including medical sociology, communications, marketing, development studies, health promotion, organizational studies, knowledge management, and complexity studies, with a particularly large impact on the use of medicines, medical techniques, and health communications. In organizational studies, its basic epidemiological or internal-influence form was formulated by H. Earl Pemberton, who provided examples of institutional diffusion such as postage stamps and standardized school ethics codes. In 1962, Everett Rogers, a professor of rural sociology, published his seminal work: Diffusion of Innovations. Rogers synthesized research from over 508 diffusion studies across the fields that initially influenced the theory: anthropology, early sociology, rural sociology, education, industrial sociology and medical sociology. Using his synthesis, Rogers produced a theory of the adoption of innovations among individuals and organizations. Diffusion of Innovations and Rogers' later books are among the most often cited in diffusion research. His methodologies are closely followed in recent diffusion research, even as the field has expanded into, and been influenced by, other methodological disciplines such as social network analysis and communication.

Production of YUKIZNA

06:29
We had started the product development project under the collaboration with Tama Art University objecting the expansion of our newly invented fastening product business. In its process, leather puzzle that we did not expected at all, YUKIZNA was born. Even though we had strongly believed so much potentiality of the product ever since the beginning, due to YUKIZNA’S atypical innovativeness, we had spent a lot of time for searching the right collaborating partners. Finally we had encountered Astro-Tech, electronic manufacture located in Minami Sanriku, whose entire property had been flown by Tsunami in March 2011, with whom Builmatel had gotten along very well, found many values in common, and agreed to make YUKIZNA be a part of Japanese culture. Since then, we had done hundreds and thousands try and error using a lot of sheets to reach out the actual YUKIZNA, the most sophisticated leather weaving system.

What is TECHNOLOGY GAP? What does TECHNOLOGY GAP mean? TECHNOLOGY GAP meaning & explanation

03:02
What is TECHNOLOGY GAP? What does TECHNOLOGY GAP mean? TECHNOLOGY GAP meaning - definition - TECHNOLOGY GAP explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. The technology gap theory a model by Porsner 1961, describes an advantage enjoyed by the country that introduces new goods in a market. As a consequence of research activity and entrepreneurship, new goods are produced and the innovating country enjoys a monopoly until the other countries learn to produce these goods: in the meantime they have to import them. It is based on two forms of lags, that is, demand lag and imitation lag. Demand lag refers to the time it takes from creating a new product, up to when it is accepted locally, at this point, exports are equal to zero and there is test marketing as well as product activation. This lag also reaches up to a point when the importing countries slowly accept the newly developed product due to lack of awareness. Imitation lag refers to the time when the product is now fully accepted by the importing country and there will be a rise in exports, hence producers in the importing country will start imitating the new product. this process`s length depends on the innovativeness and the amount of R&D the importing country spends on deveoping the product. Thus, international trade is created for the time necessary to imitate the new goods (imitation lag). This lag has several components, that Posner (1961) classifies (from the point of view of the importing country) in the following categories: 1. foreign reaction lag. This is the time between the successful utilization of the innovation by entrepreneurs in the innovating country and the new goods becoming regarded, by some firms in the importing country, as a likely competitor for their products. 2. domestic reaction lag, which is the time required for all firms in the importing country to become aware of the competition from the new good. 3. learning period, which is the time required for the importing country's firms to learn to produce the new good, and actually produce and begin selling it on the domestic market. According to Posner, to get the total net lag, one should subtract from the imitation lag a demand lag, that is, the time elapsing between the introduction of the new good in the innovating country and the appearance of a demand for it in other countries (some time elapses before the other countries' consumers come to know of the new good and acquire a taste for it). Imports of the new good will therefore take place only in the period of time resulting from the difference between the imitation lag and the demand lag.
