Hunger Games co-producer and Duke alumnus Bryan Unkeless returned to campus to speak to students interested in the entertainment industry. More entertainment news -- The Duke Union hosts a talk by Golden-Globe nominated actor Joseph Gordon Levitt November 15 in Page Auditorium. A cloak of invisibility. A device designed by graduate student Nathan Landy shields objects from detection by electromagnetic waves. It improves on a previous cloak developed by Duke Professor David R. Smith. A former president of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe, spoke at Duke's Fuqua School of Business about his country's economic and social changes. Uribe is planning to start a university in Colombia and met with Duke administrators to learn more about the U.S. education system. The Duke Arts Festival wrapped on campus. For two weeks students presented music, dance performances, photography and more.

Hollywood Film Scoring at Berklee: Orchestral Recording Techniques

02:43
Berklee students collaborate on composing, performing, and recording to picture in an innovative three-pronged course that mirrors the process of creating a Hollywood-style film score from the first written note to the final mastered piece. Students approach the collaboration from three directions—as engineers and producers (course: Orchestral Recording Techniques), as composers, conductors, or score readers (course: Advanced Orchestration), and as performers (course: Studio Scoring Orchestra). In this unique learning opportunity, students in Berklee’s Film Scoring, Music Production and Engineering (MP&E), and Ensemble departments learn not only their piece of the film scoring puzzle, but how their role intersects with all others in order to deliver the desired result, a simulation of the Hollywood process made possible by Berklee’s state-of-the-art Shames Family Scoring Stage studio, which, like some other Berklee facilities, was designed by the renowned Walters Storyk Design Group. Credits: Recorded in the Shames Family Scoring Stage at Berklee College of Music Video by 4Reel Productions Teo Karakolev: video producer Kevin Greene: camera operator Sam Harchik: camera operator Feri Gutierrez: field recordist Interviews by Mike Keefe-Feldman and Bryan Parys Produced by Mike Keefe-Feldman, Digital Strategy and Communications

What if... Hollywood got history right?

01:05:56
Dr Peter Field, Associate Professor of History, College of Arts • Is there a premium on truth in movies? • Does Hollywood's take on history come to us with a specific slant? • What if Hollywood actually got history right? Hollywood at the beginning of the twenty-first century stands as America's most valuable export, grossing billions of dollars worldwide. With so many eyeballs watching its movies, Hollywood is also the number one purveyor of stories about America and its history. In just the last year audiences have enjoyed Hollywood's take on slavery, civil rights, the assassination of Osama bin Laden and the triumph of Abraham Lincoln—to name only a few. How sensible, then, to ask if Hollywood has gotten its history right.
