Thanks. :) Cut from Chinese movie "The Sino-Japanese War at Sea 1894" 2012. The Battle of the Yalu River ("Naval Battle of the Yellow Sea") was the largest naval engagement of the First Sino-Japanese War, and took place on 17 September 1894, the day after the Japanese victory at the land Battle of Pyongyang. It involved ships from the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Chinese Beiyang Fleet. The battle is also known by a variety of names: Battle of Haiyang Island, Battle of Dadonggou, Battle of the Yellow Sea and Battle of Yalu, after the geographic location of the battle, which was in the Yellow Sea off the mouth of the Yalu River and not in the river itself. There is also no agreement among contemporary sources on the exact numbers and composition of each fleet.

Birds of the Yellow Sea

12:59
The intertidal mudflats of the Yellow Sea contain the most important stopover sites for migratory shorebirds in the East Asian-Australasian Flyway - a flyway that has transported birds from breeding grounds in the Russian and Alaskan Arctic to wintering areas in Southern Asia, Australia and New Zealand for hundreds of thousands of years. The productivity of the Yellow Sea’s mudflats and the food they provide to migratory birds are critical to the survival of many species. This film provides a primer on the basic biological principles of migratory shorebird ecology and why the Yellow Sea is a critical international hub for bird migration. Film is also available in Korean, Mandarin, Japanese and Russian. Wetland Loss in the Yellow Sea

05:10
The Yellow Sea lies at the center of one of the most populated regions on earth. More than 420 million people live in it’s vicinity and the pressure on natural resources cannot be overstated. Already more than half of the Yellow Sea’s intertidal areas have been converted to land through a process dubbed “reclamation” and the pace of this reclamation is accelerating. If the remaining intertidal areas are lost, long distance migrant bird species and the livelihoods of people that make their living from these mudflats will be lost as well. Already, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper’s population has declined to only a few hundred individuals and the IUCN has stated “that unless major steps are taken taken to reverse current trends, the East Asian-Australasian Flyway is likely to experience extinctions and associated collapses of essential and valuable ecological services in the near future.” Through satellite imagery, animations and on the ground footage this film visualizes the scale and speed of changes that have occurred along the Yellow Sea’s coastlines in recent years. This film is also available in Korean, Mandarin, Japanese and Russian. Yellow Sea Trailer

02:00
South Korean director Na Hong-jin raised the bar for intelligent action thrillers with his pulsating debut feature The Chaser (2008). He returns with knives out for a powerhouse follow-up -- one primed for success East and West, as it's the first Korean film ever to be financed by Hollywood. Hugely ambitious and masterfully wrought, The Yellow Sea is a tour de force of gritty urban storytelling and brutal action, elevating the glorious excesses of the best Asian genre fare to the level of epic tragedy. Gu-nam (Ha Jung-woo) leads a squalid existence in China's crime-ridden Korean autonomous zone. He hasn't heard from his wife since she fled for Seoul six months before, and he's struggling with a ruinous gambling habit. Then colorful, wisecracking gangster Myun (Kim Yun-seok) offers Gu-nam an escape from his misery: all he has to do is travel to Seoul and kill a man. Starting with a harrowing journey in the hold of a cargo ship across the sea of the title, Gu-nam is plunged into a dark odyssey filled with violence and pain. The contract kill goes haywire, setting off a chaotic gang war and a massive manhunt for the (mostly) innocent Gu-nam; but the more he seeks redemption, the more he finds himself trapped in the corrupt underbelly of Korean society, learning to survive by killing, and filled with remorse. Na finds a perfect balance between Hitchcockian suspense, wicked black humor, slam-bang action and melancholy drama. The impressively textured production design is a purgatorial vision of garbage-strewn, fluorescent-lit slums; and the bravura chase sequences and bloody knife-and-axe fights have to be seen to be believed.

Sea of Revenge: New Korean Thrillers at NYAFF 2011

02:37
In 2007, the Korean film industry was over. Overproduction and too many star vehicles full of pretty boys and bad dialogue were driving audiences from the theaters. Then came the grim statistic that in 2007 only 10% of the movies made a profit. But suddenly, in 2008, two small films turned it all around. One was the handball movie, Forever the Moment, and the other was Na Hong-Jin's The Chaser. Na had one short film to his credit (an award winner from the Mise en Scene Film Festival) and with two mid-list actors (Kim Yoon-Seok and Ha Jeong-Woo) and almost no advertising, The Chaser was expected to come and go in a week. Instead, the unbearably tense thriller became a massive word-of-mouth hit, beating up Kung Fu Panda and taking a chainsaw to Iron Man at the box office. Suddenly, the Korean film industry realized that local audiences had an insatiable taste for take-no-prisoners thrillers with intricate, clockwork plots crafted around intense lead performances. With the support of the Korean Cultural Service New York, we've rounded up the best of this new breed. We'll have an encore presentation of the movie that started it all, The Chaser, with Na Jong-Hin in the house, and then we'll show you the movie that just might end it all, too, Na's latest, The Yellow Sea, fresh out of Cannes and ready to rumble. We're also bringing Korea's best action director, and longtime friend of the NYAFF, Ryoo Seung-Wan so that we can present his latest movie, The Unjust, which is the kind of sprawling, epic crime film that Sidney Lumet used to make about New York. Also screening is the lighter-than-air, tongue-in-cheek, Ryoo Seung-Wan-produced, Korean version of the Bourne movies, Troubleshooter. But if you like your action intense, The Man From Nowhere, makes Hollywood thrillers look positively lightweight. It was the biggest Korean hit of 2010, grossing more than any other movie, local or foreign, at the box office and winning a black duffle bag full of awards. We're also extremely excited to present an all-female version of the Korean thriller, Bedevilled, about a woman who returns to the repressive rural community she grew up in and who learns that the best way to combat sexism is with a razor sharp scythe. So come on down, light a cigarette, crack your knuckles and get ready to have a soju bottle broken over your head while you take six blasts of Korean thrillers right in the face. Trailer edited by Matthew Griffin, who'd like to retire to his home village in the country and eat kimchi.
