Brand Storytelling: A Docu-Series | Vol. 1 | Stories vs Interruptions

At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, we hosted one-hundred and sixty people, all with a focus on creating and distributing great brand stories. Brands like Mondelez, Dr. Pepper, Hyundia, Pepsi, HBO, Dick’s Sporting Goods (have you seen the stories they are telling?), Netflix, and Marriott. Along with agency partners, filmmakers, and media companies, all people redefining the roles of media and marketing. We seized the opportunity to talk to a couple dozen of these brand storytellers, and their agents, and the result was over 13 hours of video content. Brands, agencies, influencers, filmmakers, all sharing their views on the future of branded content and advertising. It’s a whole lot of GREAT stuff that anyone in advertising and media will want to watch. Today, we are publishing the first of five episodes. The duration of each of these “shows” is about 30 minutes. Not exactly “snackable.” These are shows that are intended for marketing teams, agencies, and media partners to watch together and (hopefully) discuss and apply to their own situation and storytelling strategy. As interruptive advertising is increasingly turned off, brands are turning on to creating content with intrinsic value. There is a big story unfolding in the world of media, marketing and advertising. Many feel it is the beginning of a new era that will be enabled by technology but led by creativity. It’s an exciting time and we are happy to be playing our role in this unfolding story. I hope you will watch and let us know how you valued the show.

This is a feature available to some sellers, which allows you to upload more visually engaging content to your product pages - of the caliber previously only available to Vendors. Here’s a screenshot of a product page we set up for a client at Bobsled Marketing with enhanced content. We’ll be doing a deep dive on this feature and its effect on conversion rates (if any), so stay tuned for that. Amazon launched a new men’s fashion brand called Buttoned Down, to compete with the likes of Brooks Brothers. Currently Buttoned Down is just mens dress shirts, but there are plans to expand into dress pants, sport shirts and sweaters in the future. So Amazon already has a few private label fashion brands that it launched earlier in 2016. But what’s interesting about this, is that it’s one the first Amazon private apparel brands to launch exclusively to Prime Members. You’ve heard me talk before about the ingenuity of the Prime program in getting members to buy more items from Amazon, more consistently. Prime members spend more than double what non-prime members do, and more than half of US households are now members. Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon has previously said that he wants people to feel irresponsible if they don’t have a prime membership. Prime-exclusive clothing lines might mean that another one of Prime’s main selling points, beyond free 2-day delivery, video and music content and other perks, is an assortment of exclusive products that non-members can’t access. I checked out the product reviews for these shirts so far. They are almost all “Vine Customer Review of Free Product” - meaning even Amazon is finding it hard to get genuine product reviews of its own products and needs to rely on the premium Vine service. Amazon Go launched - everyone would have heard about this new shopping concept by now, it was all over the news. More recently we heard that Amazon has registered Amazon Go as a trademark in the UK, so we could potentially see the concept launched in new markets outside the US. What’s funny is that Costco came out to say that, “well we had the same idea 20 years ago”. As pretty much everyone in this group is an entrepreneur, we all know that ideas mean nothing - it’s all in the execution. Everyone has thought while they’re standing in line at the grocery store - “there should be a way to go without cashiers” - but Amazon was the one to see past all the barriers that other retailers saw, and bring it to life. And my expectation is that they will now on-sell this technology to other retailers, just like Amazon on-sells excess cloud computing space through AWS and excess fulfillment capacity using FBA. The other interesting concept is how Amazon, previously very much an online only company, is now attacking physical retail in earnest. Ow with retail pop-ups in dozens of malls around the US, the impending launch of Project X (the click & collect grocery concept in Seattle), and now Amazon Go, there is more than just fleeting recognition that 1 in 8 retail purchases still happen offline. But as we’ve seen with Amazon Go, they won’t just look to replicate what already works in brick & mortar retail, they will be innovating hugely to make the buying experience more personal, and profitable.
