What is Branded Content
Founder of Pickford Media, Zoe Winther, talks branded content - a massive trend in 2016 that will continue into 2017. Branded content is a different type of advertising to traditional TV and online ads we're used to. Branded video content is more about the soft sell - it's often relatable, funny and shareable. Branded content is storybased, and generally tells a story using the product being advertised. A great example of this is Dove's 'Real Beauty' series; they are incredibly emotional and relatable, and we really only discover the video is an ad at the very end. Branded videos usually work in one of two ways: more broadly relatable, which are often funny and 'edgy', or on the flip side aimed at a very specific targeted audience. One of the main things to consider is hitting the right tone. You must understand your audience and who you're targeting. Remember Stoner Sloth? It just didn't hit the mark it was trying to and became the target of thousands of jokes online. We're going to see brands putting out more and more of this high production values, sleek branded content as audiences get more and more savvy and not wanting to be directly 'sold' to. Brand Storytelling: A Docu-Series | Vol. 1 | Stories vs Interruptions
At the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, we hosted one-hundred and sixty people, all with a focus on creating and distributing great brand stories. Brands like Mondelez, Dr. Pepper, Hyundia, Pepsi, HBO, Dick’s Sporting Goods (have you seen the stories they are telling?), Netflix, and Marriott. Along with agency partners, filmmakers, and media companies, all people redefining the roles of media and marketing. We seized the opportunity to talk to a couple dozen of these brand storytellers, and their agents, and the result was over 13 hours of video content. Brands, agencies, influencers, filmmakers, all sharing their views on the future of branded content and advertising. It’s a whole lot of GREAT stuff that anyone in advertising and media will want to watch. Today, we are publishing the first of five episodes. The duration of each of these “shows” is about 30 minutes. Not exactly “snackable.” These are shows that are intended for marketing teams, agencies, and media partners to watch together and (hopefully) discuss and apply to their own situation and storytelling strategy. As interruptive advertising is increasingly turned off, brands are turning on to creating content with intrinsic value. There is a big story unfolding in the world of media, marketing and advertising. Many feel it is the beginning of a new era that will be enabled by technology but led by creativity. Then there's MailChimps brilliant campaign to create lots of different brands that sound a bit like them - MailShrimp, KaleLimp, JailBlimp and more - each with their own entertaining results. Finally, fashion brand Ivyrevel partnered with Google and influencer Kenza to create a dress through data. Facebook and the Branded Content Policy Change has left business page owners scratching their heads wondering what they can and cannot share. At the end of April, 2016 Facebook made the announcement that they would start enforcing a part of their TOS that had never been enforced before. They would be cracking down on what a Branded page could share from sites or other pages that they did not own. This seems to come down to Facebook not getting a cut of money when pages and profiles voluntarily share links to other business sites and pages. Guess Facebook is really going to force the pay to play rule. Heck here are 2 articles that talk about this Facebook Change and as you read you may notice that if a page or profile shares a link to your business site, that business may be charged for advertising that they don't even know about.
