Marketing Minute 104: “Your Competitive Advantage in Personal Branding” (Marketing Yourself)
When you think of your personal or professional brand, hopefully you already know the value of conducting a personal raw materials assessment. You explore your six raw materials categories and, among other discoveries, you learn what your current and potential strengths are. But when it comes to marketing yourself, you need to think far beyond what you’re good at and start to explore what distinguishes you from the “competition.” You need to determine your core competencies and whether they constitute a sustainable competitive advantage. Core competencies at a personal branding level are the key skills or capacities or knowledge that you have that help you to be competitive in the marketplace. Ideally, these are the favorable factors that make you unique. More importantly, they contribute to your “competitive advantage,” which is what helps you to get a particular job or earn a raise or make a sale or acquire venture capital. But do not focus only on your strengths. You have a number of other attributes that are unique to you and will always distinguish you from others. When considering core competencies from a personal branding perspective, consider how your various unique attributes can be developed to help you gain a sustainable competitive advantage in your particular marketplace. **Be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don't miss any future episodes of Monday's Marketing Minute, where you’ll learn about: - Marketing Strategy and Tactics - Brand Development - Personal Branding and Professional Branding - Marketing Yourself - Marketing Leadership - Self-Improvement - and whatever relevant and related topics come our way. **Also, connect with me on any of the following: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonymiyazaki Twitter: https://twitter.com/sensiblefolk Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sensiblefolk/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/AnthonyMiyazaki

Marketing Minute 103: “Core Competencies and Sustainable Competitive Advantage” (Marketing Strategy)
Many marketers spend their time saying that their companies are amazing at this or that, or that their products are incredible or that their service is outstanding, but in today’s world of high technology, many of your competitors can claim the same superlatives that you’re using to describe your brand, product, or organization. So one of the most important exercises you can perform from a marketing strategy perspective is to clearly identify your group’s “core competencies” and your “competitive advantages.” Your core competencies are the main strengths or abilities or knowledge or capacities that your organization has that allow it to be competitive in the marketplace. They aren’t just a list of what you’re good at, but what you’re good at that distinguishes you from the competition. These core competencies may contribute to your brand’s competitive advantage, which is what allows you to beat out the competition for target audiences in particular product categories. Other contributors to competitive advantage might be location or brand reputation or legal protection. If the advantage can be held for a long period of time, it’s considered a sustainable competitive advantage. Remember… Before marketers communicate to their audiences, they need to know what differentiates their brands, organization, and products from the competition. You cannot claim to be better if you’re not different.

What is COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE? What does COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE mean? COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE meaning - COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE definition - COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Competitive advantage is a business concept that describes the attribute of allowing an organization to outperform its competitors. These attributes may include access to natural resources, such as high-grade ores or a low-cost power source, highly skilled labor, geographic location, high entry barriers, etc. Access to new technology can also be considered as an attribute of competitive advantage. Competitive advantage is the leverage that a business has over its competitors. This can be gained by offering clients better and greater value. Advertising products or services with lower prices or higher quality interests consumers. Target markets recognize these unique products or services. This is the reason behind brand loyalty, or why customers prefer one particular product or service over another. Value proposition is important when understanding competitive advantage. If the value proposition is effective it can produce a competitive advantage in either the product or service. The value proposition can increase customer expectations and choices. Michael Porter defined the two ways in which an organization can achieve competitive advantage over its rivals: cost advantage and differentiation advantage. Cost advantage is when a business provides the same products and services as its competitors, albeit at a lesser cost. Differentiation advantage is when a business provides better products and services as its competitors. In Porter's view, strategic management should be concerned with building and sustaining competitive advantage. Competitive advantage seeks to address some of the criticisms of comparative advantage. Competitive advantage rests on the notion that cheap labor is ubiquitous and natural resources are not necessary for a good economy. The other theory, comparative advantage, can lead countries to specialize in exporting primary goods and raw materials that trap countries in low-wage economies due to terms of trade. Competitive advantage attempts to correct this issue by stressing on maximizing scale economies in goods and services that garner premium prices (Stutz and Warf 2009). The term competitive advantage refers to the ability gained through attributes and resources to perform at a higher level than others in the same industry or market (Christensen and Fahey 1984, Kay 1994, Porter 1980 cited by Chacarbaghi and Lynch 1999, p. 45). The study of this advantage has attracted profound research interest due to contemporary issues regarding superior performance levels of firms in today's competitive market. "A firm is said to have a competitive advantage when it is implementing a value creating strategy not simultaneously being implemented by any current or potential player" (Barney 1991 cited by Clulow et al.2003, p. 221). Successfully implemented strategies will lift a firm to superior performance by facilitating the firm with competitive advantage to outperform current or potential players (Passemard and Calantone 2000, p. 18). To gain competitive advantage, a business strategy of a firm manipulates the various resources over which it has direct control and these resources have the ability to generate competitive advantage (Reed and Fillippi 1990 cited by Rijamampianina 2003, p. 362). Superior performance outcomes and superiority in production resources reflect competitive advantage (Day and Wesley 1988 cited by Lau 2002, p. 125). The quotes above signify competitive advantage as the ability to stay ahead of present or potential competition. Also, it provides the understanding that resources held by a firm and the business strategy will have a profound impact on generating competitive advantage. Powell (2001, p. 132) views business strategy as the tool that manipulates resources and creates competitive advantage, hence viable business strategy may not be adequate unless it possesses control over unique resources that have the ability to create such a unique advantage.

Maintaining a Competitive Advantage
How do you maintain a competitive advantage? In this video, Karl Feldman walks through where to start — defining your targets, position, and differentiators. For more content just like this, connect with Karl & Hinge: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karlfeldman/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/KarlFeldman LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/153024/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/HingeMarketing Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HingeMarketing Professional Services Executive Forum: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3828540 It's a challenging market out there today. We've got a tight labor market, we've got competition up, down, sideways. Lot of consolidation happening out there. So, the big question we're going to talk about today is how do you maintain a competitive advantage? I'm gonna walk through a little bit of 101, kind of where to start. We recommend starting with defining your targets, position, and differentiators. So, first, understand who are your audiences that you're speaking to, what's your position to them, and what really sets you apart in the marketplace. Now, this is a lot easier said than done, but research can be a really strong tool to get there. The main point is to get inside the audience's head and understand what makes you special to them. Second, focus on building out the key infrastructure for your brand. So, once you understand your differentiators and who you're talking to, consider the infrastructure you're gonna need to get that message out there. Last, consider a holistic approach to your brand experience. When your audience first gains awareness of your brand, what is the first impression? When they're beginning to consider your brand against competition, what's your advantage? What's important to them at that point? And, their issues are going to shift and change as they move through selection and then make their final choice. So, consider your brand experience all the way through the client journey, and that will help you really clarify what you're saying, when you're saying it, and where you're saying it. If you'd like to learn more about this, check out hingeuniversity.com/differentiation. Thanks.

How To Build A Brand Online
Join Affiliate Marketing Mastery: http://www.affiliatemarketingmastery.com In this video, Stefan shares with you how to build a brand online. Building a brand is the ultimate competitive advantage in your business; it is what is going to allow you to succeed and prosper, long-term. Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon.com once said, “Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room”. A lot of business owners focus on building a business, rather than a brand. A study done by Inc. magazine and the National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) revealed that 80 percent of new businesses fail within the first five years. Marketing Strategy: Position Your Brand With An Array Of Interlocked Activities
http://www.MarketingBeyondAdvertising.com Is your marketing strategy or position in the marketplace built on a system of activities, or individual activities? This week's Monday Morning Marketing Quote is all about marketing strategy and describes how to correctly position your company, products or services for the long-haul. Our quote comes from the brilliant marketing strategist, and Harvard professor, Michael E. Porter and his book On Competition, Updated and Expanded Edition. "Strategic fit among many activities is fundamental not only to competitive advantage but also to the sustainability of that advantage. It is harder for a rival to match an array of interlocked activities than it is merely to imitate a particular sales-force approach, match a process technology, or replicate a set of product features. Positions built on systems of activities are far more sustainable than those built on individual activities." -- Michael E. Porter * Interlocked activities that reinforce your chosen position also boost your credibility in the eyes of the customer.
