It’s the time when things such as women’s suffrage, reproductive rights, and general social and economic justice were fought for, and won. Labor reform and increased wages took hold, and the movement eventually won a number of important concessions, from the elimination of child labor to the establishment of the 40-hour workweek, but not every battle ended in conclusive success. You Ask, I Answer: How to Measure Brand Equity?

09:33
Marcus asks, "How do you measure brand equity?" Huge question, but the answers have been well known for decades. Watch the video for the full answer. One of the best summaries of brand equity measurement comes from the [Spring 1996 California Management Review](https://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.edu.documents/33893776/Aaker_1996_Measuring_Brand_Equity_Across_Products_and_Markets.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIWOWYYGZ2Y53UL3A&Expires=1528287887&Signature=xVrNNCvN1u5hhFAEkjP5qeVgO%2B4%3D&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DAaker_1996_Measuring_Brand_Equity_Across.pdf). In that review, Professor David Aaker cites the following 10 dimensions of brand equity measurement: - Price premium - Satisfaction/loyalty - Perceived quality - Brand leadership and innovation - Perceived value - Brand personality - Organizational associations - Brand awareness - Market share - Price and distribution indices When this paper was written in 1996, based on a 1995 book, the Internet wasn't really a thing yet. Professor Aaker cited the exceptional expense and difficulty of measuring these dimensions. Today, thanks to our hyper-connected world, you can measure far more of these without ever leaving your desk. For several of them, the gold standard remains market research by a highly-qualified market research firm like Edison Research. For others, digital marketing analytics and customer data will provide the needed insights. Blend them together and weight them appropriately for your organization and industry. What is Integrated Marketing?

03:21
To learn more about integrated marketing for SMEs please get in touch: http://tribuscreative.com In this video we offer a short introduction to the principle of integrated marketing. By implementing a considered strategy and cost-effective marketing mix, small to medium sized businesses can reach new markets, win customers, make more sales, and build brand equity. Transcript [VO]: You want your business to grow -- you want to win more customers and make more sales. But how do you do that when budgets are tight, and your time is limited? Some of your competitors have plenty of cash to throw around and make a noise. They can run expensive TV ads, or buy full-page spreads in the national newspapers to build their brands. So how can you -- the smaller business owner -- compete? The answer lies in integrated marketing. Meet Tom. He owns Tom's Tours -- an independent travel company. Tom creates one-of-a-kind travel packages for his customers. He's not competing directly with the big holiday companies, but in the past he has struggled to get his voice heard. He used Facebook and Twitter when he had the time, and every now and then took out adverts in newspapers and magazines. The problem was his marketing was irregular, and his messaging inconsistent. His brand didn't build up any momentum. Then he adopted Integrated Marketing. For a fixed monthly budget, Tom's Tours now publishes a weekly blog post with travel ideas and tips. The posts are then promoted through social media and a monthly email newsletter. The newsletter also features content from the Tom's Tours YouTube channel, where customers are encouraged to upload videos from their holidays. In the peak holiday booking periods, the company runs print, online and radio ads, and in the quieter months, special offers and promotions. And once or twice a year he publishes a survey and report that gets him free media coverage in newspapers and magazines. Now, a potential customer experiences a consistent message across a multitude of marketing channels. And because each element of marketing is no longer working in isolation, they serve to amplify each other. Tom's voice is now being heard. But it doesn't stop there because that voice begins to resonate with other people. They become fans on Facebook, followers on Twitter, subscribers on YouTube, commenters in forums and on blog posts. They're no longer just customers, they're advocates and ambassadors. In fact, they act like a tribe, echoing Tom's message to a wider audience. The result? Tom's Tours wins more customers, and makes more sales. So, if you want your business to grow, try integrated marketing. You'll be amazed at how effectively it will build your brand.

How To Distribute Startup Equity (The Smart Way) | Dan Martell

04:17
Having issues deciding how to split up the equity in your business between your team (co-founder), advisors and potential investors? In this video, I provide some guidelines and some major DON'TS when thinking about startup equity. Are you an entrepreneur? Get free weekly video training here: http://www.danmartell.com/newsletter + Join me on FB: http://FB.com/DanMartell + Connect w/ me live: http://periscope.tv/danmartell + Tweet me: http://twitter.com/danmartell + Instagram awesomeness: http://instagram.com/danmartell Related Videos - To Raise or Not To Raise Venture Capital https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syfMR9Akxqo - The 3 Secret Agreements You Make When Accepting Venture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syfMR9Akxqo - Startup Balance With Kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2NsSWYs-20 Okay. Due to popular demand, I’ve decided to finally tackle the billion dollar beast. And while it’s not easy to have a conversation about startup equity without putting the faint of heart to sleep, it’s territory that simply can’t be overlooked. Because for any growth-oriented entrepreneur entertaining the idea of handing out equity in their company, the math absolutely matters… And one small misstep can be the difference between accelerated growth or the speed pass to startup hell. So if you’ve ever wondered what a healthy equity breakdown looks like for all key stakeholders (founders, advisors, investors and team members)... … then give this new video a quick spin. As you can see, used appropriately, equity can be an amazing way to incentivize team members and attract key advisors and investors. Like I did with Uber’s Travis Kalanick But if you don’t enter the conversation with clear knowledge of the right benchmarks to shoot for… … then you’re setting yourself up to either give too much away or lose talent and investors to other startups playing a much sharper numbers game. So get your numbers right. Make the right offers. And then step up to the plate and use equity for the growth accelerant it is. To splitting the pie… (and watching it grow), – Dan Don't forget to share this entrepreneurial advice with your friends, so they can learn too: https://youtu.be/hWA1b8owinc ===================== ABOUT DAN MARTELL ===================== “You can only keep what you give away.” That’s the mantra that’s shaped Dan Martell from a struggling 20-something business owner in the Canadian Maritimes (which is waaay out east) to a successful startup founder who’s raised more than $3 million in venture funding and exited not one... not two... but three tech businesses: Clarity.fm, Spheric and Flowtown. You can only keep what you give away. That philosophy has led Dan to invest in 33+ early stage startups such as Udemy, Intercom, Unbounce and Foodspotting. It’s also helped him shape the future of Hootsuite as an advisor to the social media tour de force. An activator, a tech geek, an adrenaline junkie and, yes, a romantic (ask his wife Renee), Dan has recently turned his attention to teaching startups a fundamental, little-discussed lesson that directly impacts their growth: how to scale. You’ll find not only incredible insights in every moment of every talk Dan gives - but also highly actionable takeaways that will propel your business forward. Because Dan gives freely of all that he knows. After all, you can only keep what you give away. If you watch this week’s video and follow through on the 3 questions… your company will look drastically different by this time next quarter. Why am I so confident making that prediction? The Hireback Question (People) The third question might come as a punch to the gut if you’ve been feeling like things just aren’t syncing up with some of your team members. Virtual equity, sustainable branding and stopping the Fisher's loop (Erik Schoppen)

05:39
Virtual equity: A bottle of water with no branding costs maybe 20 cents as water is almost free. The price of a branded bottle of water is about 1,50 and we pay for the brand’s virtual equity because it's not an existing. We cannot hold it, cannot touch it. People are willing to pay for the trust in their brain. It is actually mental equity that is based on trust. And Doppler comes with an awareness product that represents another kind of branding and charges 14,50 EUR which a ludicrous amount of money for an empty bottle. By using Doppler adds a message to our personality. It suggests that if someone is using Doppler that person is probably more aware of environmental issues therefore maybe a better person. Sustainable branding: Sustainable brands’ have other purpose than only make money. The organizations have to be financially healthy and through their activity they make the world a better place. The triangle of people, planet, profit or prosperity is ingrained n their business model. A good organization with sustainable branding is incorporating all these aspects. New Names & Nicknames in Higher Ed Brands

15:18
This week, Ken completes his 3-part review of higher ed branding in 2015 with a look at “New Names & Nicknames,” from DMZ to uVic! (Part 1 was “Cautionary Tales & Cautious Rebrandings” https://youtu.be/m2LF3rGiMLc . Part 2 was “Bold New Brands of 2015” https://youtu.be/pxmRfUfzZ5o .) Without a doubt, institutions are loathe to lose decades of brand equity and recognition by changing their names. Generally it occurs only when the institution’s mandate has changed significantly, such as when a college gains university status, or an institute becomes a polytechnic. (Most recently it was SIAST becoming Saskatchewan Polytechnic.) For years we’ve also seen a pretty widespread trend toward dropping adjectives like “regional” and “community” from college names, and minimizing or eliminating the use of the word “college” itself. Last spring, Saskatchewan’s Southeast Regional College launched a bright new brand identity without the word “Regional.” The AUCC rechristened itself “Universities Canada” last year, launching a “dynamic” new visual identity using a diamond rather than a square, to symbolize convergence, such as at a crossroads, a town square, or a university quad. https://youtu.be/cYeXSlzYIsw Last year we also saw Fanshawe College announce the Don Smith School of Building Technology, UBC name the Peter A. Allard School of Law, and Wilfrid Laurier University rename the Laziridis School of Business & Economics. Higher ed more often shortens names than changing them completely, such as when Ryerson University’s Digital Media Zone adopted the official name “DMZ” last spring. Ryerson University itself launched a refreshed visual identity last summer, featuring fresh new colours, a slightly modernized typeface, and a bit of “out of the box” symbolism. The positioning strategy emphasizes 5 key differentiators from other Toronto institutions, and we look at two quick brand videos to see it in action. In keeping with our “nicknames” topic, Ryerson also revealed two abbreviated logos for use in informal situations, and social media. Q&A with Sheldon Levy: https://youtu.be/i3Y7Ln2slyc Mind & Action: https://youtu.be/INllQ597-1U Last February, the University of Victoria finally embraced the nickname, “uVic,” by which they have been affectionately known for years. The dynamic new brand includes refreshed colours, a new wordmark, and new graphic elements including a wavy “connective thread” and some playful birds, martlets, drawn from the coat of arms. https://youtu.be/gsARvoBJCoU One of the challenges to adopting a shorter name for marketing purposes is opposition from internal and external stakeholders. I think perhaps uVic learned from the example set by Western University back in 2012. Critics thought the name geographically inaccurate, although frankly there are dozens of “Northwesterns” and “Southwesterns” in the eastern US. The new identity solved many technical issues, and introduced an elegant system of sub-brands that is the nicest I have seen anywhere. So we’ve seen colleges and universities use several strategies to pave the way for a new name or brand. UCFV adopted an acronym, Malaspina a memorable icon, CBU stripped away all semblance of a logo, and uVic made it clear that the old logo will continue in widespread use. The real work of rebranding an academic community isn’t creative work at all; the most challenging aspects are consultation, research, consensus building, and easing the campus into a new identity. Too many top-tier ad agencies have underestimated this challenge, or badly mishandled it. It’s the aspect of higher ed brand strategy that I think is most exciting, and it’s the reason I developed my proprietary Brand Chemistry™ model. www.BrandChemistry.ca And this week’s #ICYMI: a new recruitment theme from Dalhousie University, “Find what drives you.” Nicely addresses concerns about an intellectually-challenging student experience. https://youtu.be/2ysWuPN62og Coming up next time: a surprise episode!
