Jon and Brittni visited Udacity in the Bay Area, filming some new content for their Design Sprint Nanodegree program! They ended up getting a nice tour of their lovely offices and having a nice discussion about whether or not they think university is worth your while.
We're working on more detailed video about how to get started in Product Design, but in this video you'll get to know how Jon and Brittni feel about university and how much it helped them in their careers.

Awesome music from http://www.bensound.com
Today we’ll look at a 4 steps tutorial that will help you better draw in 3D.
It’s a perfect training for whom face the Malediction of the Blank page, where you may face these challenges:
◾Can’t visualize any shape in 3d on a 2D paper
◾Or just no inspiration
◾So you feel paralysed.
Note:
I recommend you to watch the video about the Contour lines first – if you don’t know how to draw them.
http://thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-10...
The idea here is to create [Random products] without caring much about the real functions of the prodcut. However you will combine hardware details to give it a look of a product. This exercise allow you to train without complexing about the feasibility, and focus on researching new shapes. Observe hardware that surround you, identify the details and “Drag & Drop” these elements to your sketches:
◾Industrial: Screw, joints, cables, grooves…
◾Functional: Power cords, button, tab, icons…
◾Commercial: Logo, barcode, product specification, illustration…
Random product sketches - Step by StepThe 4 steps of the [Random product]
Step 1 Draw random shapes.
Fill your paper of few random shapes.
Step 2 Draw the contour lines
Even if these shapes are flat, play with the contour lines to give them a 3D volume appearance.
Try to represent it with the minimum of lines.
Step 3 Draw more contour lines
To give more definition to your shapes, add more contour lines.
Step 4 Add details
You don’t care much about the “real” functions, you just try to assemble different details together to make your shape looks like a product. Details will bring life to your shape.
Assignment of the day:
Take few objects such as phone, mp3 players, mouse, camera, kitchenware… observe them and practice the “Random product” challenge.
If you can do that, the day you need to create a product from a brief, your might visualise better some shapes without putting your pen on paper yet.
There will be side benefits to this training:
◾You will improve your quality of lines
◾Improve your vision in 3D
◾Get more familiar to the Happy accident (create new shapes randomly)
◾Put in practice your memory of forms
◾And let your ideas flow faster.
Have fun ! And let me know how it goes. :)

Students of product design episode 7 covers how to give a concept design presentation to a small group, but the techniques can be used for presentations to much larger audiences and will also help with portfolio presentations.
A concept design presentation doesn't begin when you sit down in front of the client with a set of drawings, or when you're preparing those drawings a week before. It starts the moment you first meet the client, you need to build relationships. One key to this is to just be interested in the client, people are interesting and with just about everything in life things always go far better if you show you're interested in them. I once saw a quote by Bill Nye, 'Everyone you will ever meet knows something you don't'. So before the presentation, keep talking to your main contact, keep them updated with progress, be interested in what they're up to and their suggestions, good design, good relationships, good business is about continuous communication. The presentation doesn't end once you have shown the last concepts either. You need to close the presentation, by managing expectations, letting the client know when you will need a response to hit the next deadline, helping the client reach an informed decision, agreeing the next stage etc.
With any set of concepts, you'll have your favourite, often there's one that's stronger than the others, but any one of the designs a client chooses will be a good outcome, because they will be one of you or your teams designs, you can't loose, unless the client doesn't like any of them. If theres a design you're presenting that you really don't want them to choose, why is it in your presentation. Unless you have to present a series of concepts that a group of people came up with. Then there may be one you don't like, because we all like different things, but as long as it answers the brief, doesn't create confusion or you can't give a strong argument for leaving it out, then it should be included it in your presentation, to give the client breadth of choice. This is important to consider when you work in a team and also a good argument if it is your design that another member is trying to exclude.
There are masses of useful links out there to help so as promised in the video, here are some links not necessarily specific to product design which I like and think will be useful:

This is a good link to how to deal with clients who want to feature creep:
https://community.uservoice.com/blog/when-to-build-requested-feature/
In the video I briefly cover how to calm nerves and one relaxation technique that has really helped me, relaxing my shoulders. This is a good link to more relaxation techniques and ways to deal with nerves.

Finally if you have specific questions not answered by a Google search, then you can always post a question on the forums at core77.com to get advice from industry professionals.
I hope you enjoy 'Students of Product Design Episode 7' and it helps when you have to give a concept design presentation.

More on the Industrial Design sketching blog: http://thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-10...
When you sketch an object, most of the time you can’t possibly draw the full set of Perspective:
Horizon line
Vanishing points
Converging lines.
However, it’s SUPER ESSENTIAL to always keep in mind the perspective rules to make sure that your sketch is correct.
With practice, your brain will end visualising the converging lines intuitively. Make sure to train your perspective skills drawing many simple shapes such as cubes from different views.
VERY IMPORTANT: the converging lines are one of your Best friend !!
The lines looks parallel, but they are not. They slightly diverge. If one day, your sketch looks “awkward”, and you wonder why ? Check your converging lines. It will solve a lot of mistakes. Without them, you can’t possibly imagine to draw in “3D” from your imagination. So, each time you get to practice, visualise them or draw them with a light pressure with your pen.
Hint: as we can see the top of the razor head, it means the razor is below the Horizon line (also called the Eye level).
I did this sketch with the software Sketchbook Pro, with a Cintiq 22HD. If you also love sketching on tablet, I warmly recommend you guys to download that awesome and light drawing software (Free trial). Product and transport designers love it! The lines looks natural.
Note that you can get it in any platform”: Mac, Windows, Ipad, Android. The Samsung Pro note 12.2 include Sketchbook Pro by default.
I hope this sketching Tip has been helpful. Let me know your feedback in the comments.
See yah for the next Tip of the day!

How to design a blog page in Figma - Part 1/2
-
In this video I'm gonna be designing a blog page. The design will have a centered navigation and text-wrapping background for the hero headline in the header. Then we'll design the main content section. Which consists of two columns an article section and a sidebar and finally we'll create the footer section. Overall this is a very minimalistic design, no pretty pixels. Good in terms of UX and Responsive Design.
-
In the next video I'll Code the UI. Basically we'll do the Code To UI video where i'll be developing this very design.

Dave and David2 brainstorm new uCurrent and other product design options.
Autoranging systems, low current measurement design, noise, overload, USB isolation, ADC's, Gold vs Platinum, marketing, market direction, and a host of other stuff in this often tangential session.
And what common component name did Dave pronounce embarrassingly wrong for his entire childhood?

Like any good designer, you have to be aware of what you want and how you want your product to function. It can’t be all about the aesthetics though that is definitely the minimum entry but you have to take a pragmatic approach to design. At the end of the day, you are in the business of creating a product that is useful and functional. Hopefully, you are making peoples lives easier with what you created.
On this episode we are going to sort of reverse design a product. This product in particular is a computer mouse made by Logitech. I have long been a huge fan of Logitech products ever since I bought the Formula Force Wingman Force Feeback Wheel back in 1999. Logitech does a great job of bringing a calm aesthetic to their intro computer mice. When it comes to gaming, the designs get pretty crazy and complex due to the amount of controls that are necessary for the games. However, when it comes to the mouse I am going to be discussing, you’ll see the reasons why I like them so much.
Check out the video and share your thoughts and comments about the design.

MORE ON THE BLOG: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-to-multiply-your-ideas-with-the-random-product-technique/
Today, may I share with you How we can train our brain to think faster at getting ideas?
As a beginner, we often face the blank page. We just start a project that our mind suddenly seams so empty we could hear the crickets. :P It is sometime source of stress or impatience. But don’t worry it’s normal. Getting ideas can be trained. Let me share you a technique I personally like as it gives us a lot freedom.
If you are new at Photoshop, feel free to get introduced to Photoshop brushes here:
http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-98-video-how-to-make-your-first-sketches-on-photoshop-interface-and-brush-introduction/
Explore ideas like how you could do with a Brainstorming. It’s somehow like a “Visual brainstorming” though. Most innovations come from idea association. That’s what we are going to work on.
This exercise use the Random product technique we saw in a previous article. The trick here is to keep drawing having your pen always in movement as well as you ideas will flow in your mind. (As usual do not use any eraser as it will stop your flow of ideas). Before starting, gather few inspiration pictures you like. Keep them in front of you, and spot some interesting details before starting to sketch for a couple of minutes. Then start ! From there you associate, dissociate, transform, extract the elements and import them in your sketches. Do not remain on only one sketch, do a few or as many as you can. Anytime, feel free to go back to a previous one or even combine the sketches you have done together. It’s really free !
For now the products you will draw may not make sense for the real world application – as you will more or less gather the elements randomly. But as soon as your brain will be more used to this “flow of ideas routine”, you will be even more prepared the day you have to follow guidelines. That’s how you will rise your chances to add in unexpected touch to the project. :)
As a Bonus,
I added a quick tutorial about Digital rendering with Photoshop. Let me know if it’s something that interest you. If you are, let me know in the comments, so I will do some more.

Product Creation Studio is a design and development firm consisting of engineering and industrial design—they help companies take their great ideas and make them into products. With hardware development and product development there are so many unknowns, people don’t hire them to do something that has been done one million times, they hire them to do something innovative and new which makes it difficult to tell customers from the start how the project is going to go. It’s important that project management represents reality, the role of the project manager is to help everybody understand what’s really going on in a project and build trust between the parties. Up until Product Creation Studio found LiquidPlanner, there was nothing that helped them capture the flexible, adaptive style of project management. Project management is about integrity, if you create a project plan and a client thinks you are going to follow the project plan exactly, that’s not true. Product Creation Studio work in a field where there are way too many unknowns—they have to be honest with themselves and their clients that the initial project plan is their best guess. What they promise is to always communicate with their clients in a timely manner, any changes and why those changes are happening—LiquidPlanner allows them to do this. LiquidPlanner is built on the idea that work changes and has allowed them to nip a lot of problems they had in the past, while boosting communication and visibility with clients. LiquidPlanner allows them to talk about what’s real, pushing them to collaborate and solve problems—more time is spent fighting with the problem rather than each other.
