Fashion your future: Think more like a fashion designer | Suzi Vaughan | TEDxQUT

12:26
We live in times of unprecedented, disruptive change and uncertainty and most people find it challenging to thrive in those circumstances. If ‘design thinking’ is the new black, then thinking like a fashion design may just be the next big thing! This talk takes the idea of design thinking and translates it into a series of very practical tips that you can employ yourself, every day to help you think more optimistically in times of uncertainty and ambiguity. Professor Suzi Vaughan has settled (for now) in Brisbane, Australia having studied, lived and worked in Europe and Asia. After graduating from St Martins School of Art in London with a Ba Hons in Fashion, she started her professional career as a fashion designer, later moving into fashion education. Since 2011 she has been part of the executive team of a large Australian university. With over thirty years’ experience of design practice and teaching, she has become an advocate for the power and potential of design thinking. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

iStyle TV INTRODUCES YOU TO THE NEXT GENERATION OF AUSTRALIAN FASHION DESIGNERS

08:39
For over 20 years the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney has been showcasing the works of top fashion graduates from 4 of Sydney’s leading fashion design schools. From glow in the dark ink and piercings to spot, dots and circles I’m going to introduce you to the next generation of Australian Fashion Designer’s. Illustrating their unique design signatures and technical skills, the 2015 display includes: Mat Lee from Fashion Design Studio, TAFE NSW, Sydney Institute; Leah Williams from Raffles College of Design and Commerce; Vanessa Emirian from University of Technology, Sydney; and Rebecca Kendrick from Whitehouse Institute of Design. Each year the annual Student Fashion display showcases the work of top fashion graduates from four Sydney-based fashion design schools. Vanessa Emirian University of Technology, Sydney Spots, dots and sculptural forms feature throughout Vanessa’s graduate collection, Circulate. She uses traditional tailoring techniques alongside labour-intensive needle felting to create these pieces, which revolve around her ‘…wacky obsession with the limitless possibilities of the circle’. Rebecca Kendrick Whitehouse Institute of Design Rebecca has playfully deconstructed the basic white dress shirt in this collection. Unconventionally, she has inserted sleeves and collars into the necklines of gowns and tops. She has also chosen fabric to fall elegantly around the body – drapery is a core element of her collection. Mat Lee Fashion Design Studio TAFE NSW Mat uses many techniques and materials in his work including, flocking, knitting, digital printing, foil, glow-in-the-dark ink, plastics and glitter. Inspired by artist Yoko Ono’s minimalism and clean lines, Mat has created outfits that attempt to give confidence for any age or gender. Leah Williams Raffles School of Design and Commerce Leah’s graduate collection, Twisted trickery, explores perception through the use of geometric shapes. Inspired by German graffiti artist ‘1010’ and Swiss painter Felice Varini, Leah has used layering and piecing to create optical illusions and depth in her work. Student Fashion 2015 From Saturday 28 March – 23 August 2015 Powerhouse Museum, 500 Harris Street, SYDNEY Free with general admission: $15 adult, $8 child/concession, $38 family
