George Condo Interview: The Way I Think

39:03
George Condo was part of the 1980s wild art scene in New York. In this video, recorded in his New York-studio, the iconic artist shares his life-long love of drawing and thoughts on his artistic expression, which he describes as “artificial realism.” ”I kind of draw like you’re walking through the forest, where you don’t really know where you’re going, and you just start from some point and randomly travel through the paper until you get to a place where you finally reach your destination.” Condo studied music theory at college, but soon realised that it was too formal and rigid for him, and that he needed an art form that would give him more freedom. However, he still approaches his art like a musician, working fast and following the rhythm of the drawing or painting without “missing any of the notes.” The tempo, he feels, is very important when it comes to art. Condo wants his work to contain clear references to the different artists – from Picasso to Velasquez – they’re inspired by, but with a twist. His painting or drawings are about finding a way in which one can capture a person’s humanity through a portrait – capturing not just the outside but also the inside. Moreover, Condo aims to “turn negatives into positives”, portraying “the ordinary characters that make up our lives, whether it’s the janitor or the bus driver or the school teacher or the principal or the mailman or the truck driver. These are not the glamorous people that you see on the cover of Vogue Magazine, but they are what the world is composed of. And to give them a spot in the world is what I always admired about Rembrandt to a certain degree…” “I love drawing as much as painting, so why not make your paintings from your drawings, but literally have there be no defined sort of hierarchy between the two mediums?” Condo started making “drawing-paintings”, where you can’t distinguish e.g. paint from pastel, or a line made with a paintbrush or a line drawn in from and thus making the two mediums equal: “There’s no real difference between figurative painting or abstract painting, ‘cause it’s all painting to begin with… You don't’ have to follow any rules as a painter. If you’re making an abstract painting it doesn't mean eventually it can’t morph into a figurative one.” When a famous art historian asked Condo what he called the form of work he did, Condo thought of the description “artificial realism”. Artificial realism gives the painter the opportunity to go back and paint something in a realistic way while still portraying all that which is artificial in our world. In continuation of this, he finds that now everything seems to be “artificial realism” with the fake news that is all around us: “Art is the truth, and everything else is a lie.” George Condo (b. 1957) is an American contemporary visual artist working in the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. Condo mixes input from art history’s masters – such as Velasquez, Manet and Picasso – with elements of American Pop Art. He distorts and renews this material so that it stands out and becomes his own: a kind of strange hybrid that blurs boundaries between the comic and the tragic, the grotesque and the beautiful, the classic and the innovative. As part of the wild art scene in New York in the early 1980s, Condo was close to painters such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and worked for Andy Warhol’s Factory, applying diamond dust to silkscreen. Condo’s work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney Museum, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Broad Foundation in Los Angeles, Tate Gallery in London, Centre George Pompidou in Paris and Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art in Oslo, among others. He is the recipient of an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (1999) and the Francis J. Greenberger Award (2005). Condo lives and works in New York City. George Condo was interviewed by Kasper Bech Dyg at his studio in Soho, New York City in September 2017. Highlighting a range of media—including painting, sculpture, photography, video, ceramic, textile, and printmaking—the exhibition explores the myriad ways in which artists are responding to issues of personal, local, and global relevance. Special thanks to the Tessa Wedberg and Aaron Gum for their hard work and dedication in making this video to promote "Art Seen," and to Routine Escorts for donating their music to the project. The Golden Ratio Coloring Book by Rafael Araujo - An Artist's Viewpoint and Review

15:48
Artist / Author: Rafael Araujo  Title of the Book: Golden Ratio Coloring Book Publication date of book: June of 2016 Published by: Phi Arts PTY Ltd. Of Australia Availability on Amazon: As of Sept 20, 2016, not available with no availability date showing; may eventually be POD or Paper Weight: Heavy, Cream, 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches, Suitable for wet media for colorists About the artist: https://rafaelaraujoart.com/ Rafael Araujo is an architect and illustrator born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1957. For over 40 years he has been drawing beautiful illustrations of nature, entirely by hand. At an old drafting table, he adeptly renders the mathematical brilliance of nature with just a pencil, compass, ruler and a protractor. He was 15 when he first observed intelligent patterns in the work of nature and learned about PHI, the Golden Ratio. This ratio equals 1.618 and is found everywhere in the realm of nature. By applying the Golden Ratio in his geometric formulas the secret of nature's beautiful designs unfolded before his eyes. In his illustrations he leaves the construction lines intact to highlight this natural mathematical framework. Rafael has been featured in CNN World, Wired Magazine, WWF, and exhibited at Stanford University and many other prestigious galleries. With his work it is his greatest hope to inspire a much needed love for our natural environment. Illustrations in the book: 25 Level of coloring competency needed: Intermediate to Advanced Disclaimer: Reviewer has purchased the book directly from the Artists via a Kickstarter campaign to finance publishing the book. The minimum pledge to receive a copy of the book was about $42.00 (USD). This level was supposed to receive: 2 collectable first edition copies of Rafael Araujo’s Golden Ratio Coloring Book and a pdf with all drawings featured in the book so you can print them out and practice. The buyer ONLY received one book and no pdf drawings. So there was a little disappointment that I didn't receive what was promised in the Kickstarter pledge amount. UPDATE (09/28/16): I have been contacted by the publishing house and artist's representative. It seems they were having issues with the shippers not sending out the correct number of books and/or product in the correct Kick-Starter level and they are working diligently to correct and fix those issues to those who have pledged Kickstarter funding. I am pleased that the publisher contacted me within 48 hours of my post/review/video and have designated a second shipped book to me (per my Kickstarter pledge level) and have offered other 'compensation' for my concerns, for which I am very pleased. Please do consider purchasing this book! Lovely, artistic pages and drawings inside. The Reviewer has no financial connection to the artist / author of this book. TwinTown: An exhibition of new artwork by Korean and European artists

03:29
Twin Town at the KCCUK runs from the 18th September - 24 October 2012 The Korean Cultural Centre UK is pleased to present Twin Town, an exhibition of new artwork by Korean and European artists. Minae Kim and Phyllida Barlow, with guest Jenny Dunseath. Jiho Won and Tariq Alvi. Chanmin Park and Erasmus Schröter Twin Town is made up of three 'pairs' of artists, bringing together a Korean artist with a European counterpart. These pairs (one of which includes a guest) are based on lines of practice; sculpture, installation and photography. This approach deliberately veers away from making an exhibition easily tick-boxed as a Korean art show and instead opts to show art by artists from Korea alongside art by artists from the UK and Germany. In this way Twin Town also acknowledges the wider fact that contemporary artists from all sides of the world can be found working next to one another. Curatorial concerns are less about collaboration and more about ideas of influence and change. The exhibition plays with the idea of a twin; a lost, known or rival sibling, together at birth but divided by time. South Korea let's not forget has a twin, of which few know anything about. Twin Town is the title because what influences and changes us is both familiar and strange, a twin encounter. Twin Town is curated by Jeremy Akerman and managed by Ji Hye Hong.
Why is Modern Art so Bad?

05:50
For two millennia, great artists set the standard for beauty. Now those standards are gone. Modern art is a competition between the ugly and the twisted; the most shocking wins. What happened? How did the beautiful come to be reviled and bad taste come to be celebrated? Renowned artist Robert Florczak explains the history and the mystery behind this change and how it can be stopped and even reversed. For a score of centuries, artists enriched Western society with their works of astonishing beauty. "The Night Watch"... "The Thinker"... "The Rocky Mountains." Master after master, from Leonardo, to Rembrandt, to Bierstadt, produced works that inspired, uplifted, and deepened us. And they did this by demanding of themselves the highest standards of excellence, improving upon the work of each previous generation of masters, and continuing to aspire to the highest quality attainable. But something happened on the way to the 20th Century. The profound, the inspiring and the beautiful were replaced by the new, the different, and the ugly. Today the silly, the pointless, and the purely offensive are held up as the best of modern art. Michelangelo carved his "David" out of a rock. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art just offers us a rock, -- a rock -- all 340 tons of it. That's how far standards have fallen. How did this happen? How did the thousand-year ascent towards artistic perfection and excellence die out? It didn't. It was pushed out. Beginning in the late 19th century, a group dubbed The Impressionists rebelled against the French Academie des Beaux Arts and its demand for classical standards. Whatever their intentions, the new modernists sowed the seeds of aesthetic relativism -- the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" mentality. Today everybody loves the Impressionists. And, as with most revolutions, the first generation or so produced work of genuine merit. Monet, Renoir, and Degas still maintained elements of disciplined design and execution, but with each new generation standards declined until there were no standards. All that was left was personal expression. The great art historian Jacob Rosenberg wrote that quality in art "is not merely a matter of personal opinion but to a high degree . . . objectively traceable." But the idea of a universal standard of quality in art is now usually met with strong resistance if not open ridicule. "How can art be objectively measured?" I'm challenged. In responding, I simply point to the artistic results produced by universal standards compared to what is produced by relativism. The former gave the world "The Birth of Venus" and "The Dying Gaul," while the latter has given us "The Holy Virgin Mary," fashioned with cow dung and pornographic images, and "Petra," the prize-winning sculpture of a policewoman squatting and urinating -- complete with a puddle of synthetic urine. Without aesthetic standards we have no way to determine quality or inferiority. Here's a test I give my graduate students, all talented and well educated. Please analyze this Jackson Pollock painting and explain why it is good. It is only after they give very eloquent answers that I inform them that the painting is actually a close up of my studio apron. I don't blame them; I would probably have done the same since it's nearly impossible to differentiate between the two. Learning watercolor with Youtube - Using an artist's speed painting video as a tutorial

03:22
It is no secret that Youtube has been a great learning source for me for years! In the last couple of them or so, watercolor has been my obsession theme. There are so many great independent artists willing to share their processes and jewels! One of my favorites has a channel called Artbybee7. In this video, I'm using one of her recent speed painting videos as a tutorial. I watched her video a few times and tried to re-create her idea, and even her color palette, by memory. I cheated at the end, watching her video again to see how she paints the window lights. Watch the original video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B6D8EcfTb8 She has an Etsy shop too: https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/Artbybee7Shop _____________ Materials used: Paper: Bee Paper Aquabee 100% Cotton watercolor paper - 6x9 in - 140lbs./300gsm Watercolors: St. Petersburg's White Nights • Cadmium Yellow Medium PY35 • Quinacridone Rose PR122 • Blue PB15 • Bright Blue PB15:3 • Ultramarine Blue PB29 White Ink: Dr. Ph. Augmented Reality (AR) as an Artist’s Tool for Equity and Access | Nancy Baker Cahill | TEDxPasadena

13:19
Multidisciplinary artist, Nancy Baker Cahill, believes in increasing dialogue through drawing, and uses innovative mediums such as virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) to defy boundaries and space. Through the use of exquisite photographs and videos of her creations, she demonstrates for the audience that she is fierce with talent and conviction. Growing up, Nancy was “under the impression that true artists had to be tormented and die in obscurity, but as it turns out, you don’t have to be solitary or tortured to make art.” Her passion for promoting equity and access will challenge everything you’ve ever thought about art as a medium for self-expression. Nancy Baker Cahill is an acclaimed multi-disciplinary artist and founder of 4th Wall, a free Augmented Reality (AR) app which allows users to place art in 360 degrees anywhere in the world. Nancy received her B.A. in Art from Williams College. From 2010-2012 she initiated and led a collaborative art project at Homeboy Industries called “Exit Wounds.” Works from this project were exhibited throughout Los Angeles as part of the Craft and Folk Art Museum (CAFAM)’s “Folk Art Everywhere” program. In 2015, she designed and led a collage workshop with homeless individuals under the aegis of a CAFAM grant. She is also the recipient of an ARC Grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation. Solo exhibition highlights include the Pasadena Museum of California Art, Ochi Projects, her Virtual Reality (VR) public art project on the IF (Innovation Foundation) sponsored Sunset Digital Billboards, and a VR/AR event at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) in April 2018. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
