What is Lean Process and Product Development ( LPPD)?

02:43
In this pithy animation and description, author and former product development executive Jim Morgan explains what an LPPD system is and how it consistently delivers profitable value streams and great products that customers love. After you watch it, make plans for you and your team to join early adopters of LPPD from industrial and service companies at the 2nd annual Designing the Future Summit, June 27- 28, 2019, in Traverse City, MI: https://www.lean.org/designfuture2019 MI: https://www.lean.org/designfuture2019 Like last year’s inaugural conference, the 2019 summit will go beyond broad generalizations “to be innovative” and dig into concrete LPPD practices that are creating new products and services with speed, precision, and exceptional quality. Plenary speakers include: • Tyler Schilling, president of TechnipFMC Schilling Robotics, and Andy Houk, vice president of product development; • Frank Paluch, executive vice president of Honda’s North American manufacturing operation, who spent five years as president of Honda’s R&D facilities in North America; • David Crawley, a founder of startup Ubiquity Robotics and former head of strategic initiatives at Cypress semiconductor; • Susan DeSandre, a former senior executive at Apple and Ford. • Steve Shoemaker, general manager of engineering for Caterpillar’s Earthmoving Division; • Andi Plantenberg, principle, FutureTight and a mentor to Silicon Valley startups, will give you the trade-craft for knowing when it’s time to kill an idea – and when to keep it going for a prosperous future. • Jim Morgan, senior advisor and founder of Lean Product and Process Development at the nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and co-author of Designing the Future, and The Toyota Product Development System will explain why product development is a natural and powerful leverage point for transforming the entire organization. Previously, he was a global engineering director at Ford during the product-led revitalization under CEO, Alan Mulally. • Jim Womack, LEI’s founding CEO, co-author of Lean Thinking and Machine That Changed the World, and author of Gemba Walks, will explore “Re-Thinking Value Creation in Product and Process Development” for a world in which customers often seek a solution to a complex problem involving many products rather than a single product. Breakout sessions and workshops include: • Giving Users a Voice in UX Design; • Industry Revolution Pulled by Lean Product and Process Development; • Managing Product Development in Healthcare with Visual Management (Obeya); • Set-Based Concurrent Engineering; • Visible Knowledge; • Craft Beer Game: Leading the Innovation Pipeline; • How to Develop New Value with the A3 Process; • Lean Process Creation: Why Developing a Product that Customers Actually; Want Requires a Great Process to Produce and Deliver It. History of Unreleased Apple Products

10:27
it isn’t very hard to believe that companies like Apple experiment with all kinds of different designs for their products, and most of those designs never seen the light of day. Well I looked all around the internet to find as many authentic designs and products that Apple actually created but decided not to release. And I realized that most of the products I came across were designed back in 1982 when Steve Jobs was twenty-eight. It was at this time when he realized that Apple was in a tough predicament. Because with the exception of the aging Apple IIe, the company’s products were failing against IBM’s PCs. And they all were ugly, especially the Apple III and soon-to-be-released Apple Lisa. So in this video, I don’t want to just rattle off a list of different prototypes and product concepts that never entered production, but I want to tell the story of this interesting period in Apple’s history where design became the company’s top priority. And it wasn’t just a simple matter of designing better computers, it was about creating a design language for Apple to unify their products and compete with bigger companies like IBM and Sony. It was during this period that Apple experimented heavily with their potential design direction, and this exploration resulted in numerous concept designs and concept products that, while never released, helped shape the future of Apple.

Culture as Product: Designing a Great Company Culture - Justin Rosenstein - Lean Startup Week 2017

17:39
The most successful tech companies share a product design passion for perfecting every detail of their user experience; those that don’t tend to hit a wall and often flame out once in market. But there's another design imperative forming in the conversation about what makes a world-class tech company. In this talk, Asana co-founder Justin Rosenstein presents a new approach to thinking about your startup's culture from the ground up, mapping the idea of intentional culture design to the familiar tenets of product research, design, and management when thinking about how to create and maintain a winning culture ""roadmap"" in your organization. Justin makes the case that using this culture roadmap maximizes the results of your company (from revenue to retention), helps your organization adapt to market shifts, and manifests the full potential of your business. Justin Rosenstein is the co-founder of Asana, the fast-growing work tracking app for teams. Asana’s mission is to help humanity thrive by enabling all teams to work together effortlessly. He’s also the primary author of Wavelength, an online publication for teams who aspire to do great things together—through a mindful, purposeful approach. Justin has driven the development of products that hundreds of millions of people use daily. At Facebook, he led projects such as the Like button and Facebook Pages, and designed the in-house project management system that Facebook still relies on. At Google, he managed several products in the communication/collaboration division, and created the initial prototype for Gmail Chat. Justin majored in math and got part way through a Master’s in Computer Science at Stanford. He is also a serious student of yoga, meditation, and cats.

Integration by Parts... How? (NancyPi)

18:00
MIT grad shows how to integrate by parts and the LIATE trick. To skip ahead: 1) For how to use integration by parts and a good RULE OF THUMB for CHOOSING U and DV, skip to time 2:46. 2) For the TRICK FOR CHOOSING U and DV (the LIATE memory trick) skip to 10:12. Nancy formerly of MathBFF explains the steps. Follow Nancy on Instagram: https://instagram.com/nancypi Twitter: https://twitter.com/nancypi WHEN to use INTEGRATION BY PARTS: If you have an integral to evaluate, and you don't already know how to integrate it, as is, then see if you can simplify it somehow with algebra. If not, try doing a substitution, like U-Substitution. If U-Substitution does not help, then you may need to use the INTEGRATION BY PARTS formula. RULE OF THUMB: The first step to use Integration by Parts is to pick your "u" and "dv". As a general rule of thumb, whichever factor in your integrand gets simpler when you take the derivative of it, make that your u. Then make the other factor your dv (and include the dx in this dv). Note: This works if the part you chose for dv does not get any bigger or more complicated when you integrate it. After you've picked u and dv, then find du by differentiating u, and find v by integrating dv. Finally, plug everything into the integration by parts formula and simplify. TRICK: You can instead use an acronym memory trick to choose the right "u". The acronym LIATE stands for Logs, Inverse trig functions, Algebraic functions, Trig functions, and Exponentials (in that order). If you follow those letters, LIATE, in sequence, whichever type of function you find first that you have, make that your u. Then, make the next thing you find your dv. Once you've picked u and dv this way, the steps are the same as above. Find du by differentiating u, and find v by integrating dv. Then use the IBP (integration by parts) formula and simplify for the answer. For more of my calculus and math videos, check out: http://nancypi.com

VeChain THOR (VET) - Top 10 Reasons To Invest - News & Predictions! Ultimate Guide

VeChain THOR (VET) - The Ultimate Guide - News, and Partnerships! Must Know These BEFORE You Invest! ➥➥➥ SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS ➥➥➥ Never miss a Mineable video. Subscribe ⇢ https://mineable.com/Subscribe Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/mineable_ Check out our website: https://mineable.com As the crypto market suffers from the speculation bubble that fueled it in 2017 and early 2018, Vechain continues to add partners and legitimacy. VeChains partnerships span continents, corporations, and even governments and this is just the beginning. VEN is much more than a Supply Chain and Logistics solution. From partnerships with BMW, the wine industry and even the Chinese government, this is how Vechain (VET) is taking over the world one step at a time. Keeping the World Honest VeChain is the brainchild of Sunny Lu. a former Asian division chief information officer of the $170 billion powerhouse Louis Vuitton. the world’s most valuable luxury brand. At Louis Vuitton, Sunny saw the rampant toll forgeries can take on a brand first hand. It’s one of the most pirated luxury brands in the world. Based on estimates, Louis Vuitton loses about $4.6 billion in sales and hundreds of millions more in diminished brand value annually due to counterfeiting. The company also spends $17 million per year fighting fakes. In 2015, Sunny decided to tackle global counterfeiting head-on. He took his deep industry knowledge and his team to craft a solution that’s already gaining enormous traction. This is where Vechain steps in; here’s a simple overview of how the VeChain solution works VeChain provides companies with an encrypted smart chip or QR code with a unique ID. The company embeds the chip or QR code on the product. Then, it scans the unique product ID and stores it on the blockchain. The company can track the product during each phase of its life cycle... from origination to user. Because the blockchain is tamper-proof, companies know the products they send or receive are authentic. It’s a low-cost, easy-to-use solution. And companies are lining up to use it. VeChain is a product that the company has been developing since 2015: it is a blockchain-based ledger that helps record large-scale logistics for enterprises. With an original focus on anti-counterfeiting, Vechain has seen its blockchain idea expand to insurance, automobiles, luxury goods, and more. And it's being used today - both with physical RFID tags the company has developed and now in part of a recently announced partnership with BYD to work on a carbon credit system. Clearly, one can argue that Vechain is the blockchain platform that is about to change the world as we know it. It is offering solutions that the corporate world has been grappling with for years, and as it continues to resolve them, you can bet that its value will grow. The use-cases are just too astronomical to ignore. Governments, cities, and multinational companies are already using VeChain’s technology. When the sun shines again on the crypto market projects like VeChain will be among the first to skyrocket higher. And that’s just the beginning. #Vechain #VET #Altcoins #News

I want a PS4 Pro but it is low on the priority list and I may wait for the Playstation 5. And for those interested, I have a 50 inch LG TV. Once again it is not high on my priorities but I want to upgrade this to a 60 inch 4k TV in the future. I capture my footage with the Elgato HD60s Capture card. I highly recommend this for anyone else who is recording videos. Check out this link to see more about it: https://amzn.to/2MQeb7L. Another product that I use from Elgato is the Elgato Streamdeck, I also recommend any streamers to check this out: https://amzn.to/2u7usNJ. I am currently saving for a new desktop. My fans know the struggles that I have with my current laptop! The laptop that I use for all of my editing and streaming is a MSI GE60 2QD Apache. It comes packed with an Intel core i7 processor and a NVIDIA GTX950M Graphics card. It has 8GB memory with a further 2GB dedicated memory on the graphics card. It does the job but I cannot wait for the day that I can stream longer than 4 hours without it crashing! The desktop is a priority and the one I am looking at is this: https://amzn.to/2lZcZUh. ALM-PLM Integration with Siemens Digital Industries Software

04:08
ALM-PLM integration leverages developments in integration technology to ensure that organizations have a single, cohesive product ecosystem, with multi-directional linking of ALM and PLM data and processes. Learn more https://www.plm.automation.siemens.com/global/en/products/software-engineering/plm-alm-integration.html Integrating product and software development is not an easy hill to climb, but companies need to begin climbing if they haven’t already. Almost everywhere today, the landscape is one of division. Product development teams manage hardware requirements, design, testing and production using a product lifecycle management platform. Software development teams manage software requirements, design, testing, building and deployment using an application lifecycle management platform... if they are lucky. Often as not, ALM is a cobbled-together amalgamation of office documents and point solutions that can’t manage and trace artifacts and information such as requirements and test cases across functional boundaries. The interoperability and data federation at the core of the ALM-PLM integration extends the traceability and transparency from software engineering workflows to systems-driven product development (SDPD) processes. Stakeholders work in their familiar environments, with embedded user interfaces enabling the seamless coordination of interrelated workflows in real‐time. When binaries are produced and tested in Polarion, they can be published to the Teamcenter bill of material, thus providing a truly integrated mechanical, electrical and software BOM for the product. The Big Bang: Before and After | Peter Atkins and Jim Baggott

04:48
Peter Atkins discusses the ideas in his book Conjuring the Universe with fellow science writer Jim Baggott. They talk about The Big Bang, what the absolute ‘nothing’ that preceded it means; about uniformity, symmetry, and the conservation laws at the heart of the universe; about time, energy, and causality; and about ‘nothing’ splitting into two precisely equal and opposite ‘somethings’. https://global.oup.com/academic/product/conjuring-the-universe-9780198813378 Professor Peter Atkins is a fellow of Lincoln College in the University of Oxford and the author of about seventy books for students and a general audience. His texts are market leaders around the globe. A frequent lecturer in the United States and throughout the world, he has held visiting professorships in France, Israel, Japan, China, and New Zealand. He was the founding chairman of the Committee on Chemistry Education of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and was a member of IUPAC's Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division. Peter was the 2016 recipient of the American Chemical Society's Grady-Stack Award for science journalism. Jim Baggott is a freelance science writer. He was a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Reading but left to work with Shell International Petroleum Company and then as an independent business consultant and trainer. His many books include Mass: The quest to understand matter from Greek atoms to quantum fields; Higgs: The Invention and Discovery of the 'God Particle'; and The Quantum Story: A History in 40 Moments © Oxford University Press

Quality first and foremost: We work only with the very best stone. It all starts in the quarry where we identify the optimal extraction point where the purest material is located. Whilst this means a more limited quantity, it also ensures that the stone we choose has a uniform tonality and will stand the test of time, maintaining its colour across the decades once it has been installed. Every single product passes through the hands of our team for finishing and a final quality check. We’ve been working with natural stone in this way for over 70 years across 3 generations. Craftsmanship meets innovation: In 2013 we received an award from the Italian President recognising us as the most innovative company in Italy in the natural stone sector. In fact many of our innovations are on show in the Los Angeles Science and Technology Museum. We take raw stone, transforming it into unique and exclusive products by combining proprietary technology and techniques with the expertise and human touch of our team of artisans. An indelible bond with the quarries just a stone’s throw away from our Tuscan headquarters, together with obsessive attention to detail and an innate ability to anticipate and reinterpret design trends, are the characteristics which have long distinguished us and meant that we set the global benchmark when it comes to innovation in the natural stone sector. ‘Total Look’ design: We are one of just a very few companies in the world who can deliver a Total Look environment encompassing surfaces, bathroom products and home décor pieces all in beautiful natural stone. We focus on a selective range of stones which create an elegant, versatile and consistent colour palette across products designed, manufactured, tested and certified to guarantee absolute client satisfaction. Green philosophy: Respect for the environment is integral to who we are and what we do and in fact we were the first company in the world to manufacture a product on an industrial scale using offcuts. Lithoverde®, the world’s first recycled stone material, is 99% composed of discarded stone and as such contributes LEED points, in recognition of its positive impact on the environment. Bespoke solutions & 360-degree support: Our goal is to ensure that each and every client loves their Salvatori product and so we are with you every step of the way, from offering design and engineering expertise through to providing guidance about installing, treating and caring for your stone. All our products have been developed so as to minimise any risk of installation problems whilst our Plug&Play bathroom products reduce time and costs thanks to their fast and stress-free installation system. Every product is accompanied by installation guides, video tutorials and technical sheets.

Dr. Mike Peters, President of the Connected Car Division, HARMAN CES2018 Consumer Electronics Show

04:30
Listen as Dr. Mike Peters, President of the Connected Car Division, HARMAN walks us around Harman's Hard Rock Casino CES2018 display. ================ Samsung press release: "Integration is Our Secret Weapon": Samsung and HARMAN Executives Discuss the Next Chapter for Driving January 10, 2018 Since Samsung acquired HARMAN in 2017, the companies have poured considerable focus and investment dollars into connected car technology to help deliver what will be the next chapter for driving and communication on the road. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Dr. Mike Peters, President of the Connected Car Division, HARMAN, about what we can look forward to in the automotive industry, including the new Digital Cockpit platform that is being demonstrated at CES 2018. Q. What is the purpose of the Digital Cockpit, the new automotive electronics platform that was unveiled by HARMAN and Samsung at CES 2018? Mike Peters (Peters): With the Digital Cockpit, we wanted to bring together several previously distinct computing domains into one platform. The former infotainment system, the instrument cluster, audio and lighting controls, and connected ADAS features are brought together in a single hardware and software package. This allows the OEM to bring a much more intuitive, easy-to-use and visually-integrated approach to cockpit design. Q. What were the insights and thinking that helped you create the Digital Cockpit? Peters: Consumer demand is dictating that the car become an extension of the connected lifestyle rather than being a product of a siloed industry. This means in-car technology needs to replicate the smartphones and smart audio experiences people enjoy at home or the office. By integrating this into the Digital Cockpit and creating more “hands-free” tools like voice activation, haptic controls and smartphone projection, HARMAN can help OEMs meet this demand while still keeping drivers safe and focused on the road ahead. Q. How will the Digital Cockpit connect with other IoT devices? How important was it to incorporate this level of connectivity from the outset? Peters: The Digital Cockpit can connect to devices, such as a driver’s smartphone, seamlessly. In a premium configuration, it weaves together a driver’s entire connected lifestyle across the Internet of Things through a multi-display layout that leverages HARMAN’s Ignite Platform. Peters: This means the in-car user experience can be personalized for the driver and passenger via services such as virtual personal assistants, portable profiles, augmented reality and more. This also allows for Android to be integrated on four displays – a first for the industry. Having an agnostic platform was important to us as the collaboration between OEMs and suppliers is the only way future mobility will be successful. Q. What are the strengths of the HARMAN-Samsung automotive electronics business? Peters: Indeed, the synergies between HARMAN and Samsung have astounded me. Becoming part of Samsung has accelerated the depth and breadth of resources for innovation and synergy across all of HARMAN’s business: from the car to home and everything in between. What I admire most about our relationship with Samsung is the balance our companies offer each another. Together, we increase innovation through scale, resources and competencies, leveraging Samsung’s global scale, R&D and distribution channels, and HARMAN’s deep heritage in automotive technology. Integration is our secret weapon, and an open ecosystem encourages collaboration to accelerate innovation and bridge ecosystems. At CES this year, we’re showing that while the in-car experience is fueled by technology, it’s ultimately human at heart. With this mantra driving our mission, we’re becoming the leader in connectivity and autonomous driving. Q. What are the challenges you need to overcome? Peters: The automotive technology market is also a crowded one, and with the excitement of autonomy on the horizon, there’s even more clutter to cut through. We’re no longer just in competition with other automotive suppliers, but are part of a future of mobility revolution, along with suppliers, OEMs, tech companies and even rideshare startups fighting for a piece of the pie. Mahavira believed in “karma” and transmigration of the soul (Atma).. On good or bad karmas, the soul creates its own present or future. The body dies, but the soul is immortal. 4. Jains lay great emphasis on Equality.man may be good or bad according to his karma and not on his birth. 5. Jiva acts, feels and wills. It suffers and dies. KFC के बारे में 5 बाते जो कोई नहीं जनता | FACTS ABOUT KFC | INDIAN HOT TOPICS

04:19
KFC, also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken,is an American fast food restaurant chain that specializes in fried chicken. Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, it is the world's second-largest restaurant chain (as measured by sales) after McDonald's, with almost 20,000 locations globally in 123 countries and territories as of December 2015. The chain is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands, a restaurant company that also owns the Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and WingStreet chains.[5] KFC Hot Wings and fries KFC was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders, an entrepreneur who began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky during the Great Depression. Sanders identified the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first "Kentucky Fried Chicken" franchise opened in Utah in 1952. KFC popularized chicken in the fast food industry, diversifying the market by challenging the established dominance of the hamburger. By branding himself as "Colonel Sanders", Harland became a prominent figure of American cultural history, and his image remains widely used in KFC advertising. However, the company's rapid expansion overwhelmed the aging Sanders and he sold it to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey in 1964. KFC was one of the first American fast food chains to expand internationally, opening outlets in Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Jamaica by the mid-1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, it experienced mixed fortunes domestically, as it went through a series of changes in corporate ownership with little or no experience in the restaurant business. In the early 1970s, KFC was sold to the spirits distributor Heublein, which was taken over by the R.J. Reynolds food and tobacco conglomerate; that company sold the chain to PepsiCo. The chain continued to expand overseas, however, and in 1987, it became the first Western restaurant chain to open in China. It has since expanded rapidly in China, which is now the company's single largest market. PepsiCo spun off its restaurants division as Tricon Global Restaurants, which later changed its name to Yum! Brands. KFC's original product is pressure fried chicken pieces, seasoned with Sanders' recipe of 11 herbs and spices. The constituents of the recipe represent a notable trade secret. Larger portions of fried chicken are served in a cardboard "bucket", which has become a well known feature of the chain since it was first introduced by franchisee Pete Harman in 1957. Since the early 1990s, KFC has expanded its menu to offer other chicken products such as chicken fillet sandwiches and wraps, as well as salads and side dishes, such as French fries and coleslaw, desserts, and soft drinks, the latter often supplied by PepsiCo. KFC is known for its slogans "Finger Lickin' Good", "Nobody does chicken like KFC" and "So good". If you found this video valuable, give it a like. If you know someone who needs to see it, share it. Oreo Biscuits Success Story | Oreo Milkshake | Mondelez International ( in Hindi )

04:19
On March 6, 2012, the famous cookie brand, Oreo, celebrated its 100th birthday. From humble beginnings in a Nabisco bakery in New York City, Oreo has grown to become the bestselling cookie brand of the 21st century generating $1.5 billion in global annual revenues. Currently owned by Kraft Foods Inc, Oreo is one of the company's dozen billion-dollar brands. Until the mid-1990s, Oreo largely focused on the US market - as reflected in one of its popular advertising slogans from the 1980s, "America's Best Loved Cookie". But the dominant position in the US limited growth opportunities and spurred Kraft to turn to international markets. With China and India representing possibly the jewels in the crown of international target markets due to their sheer size, Oreo was launched in China in 1996. The China launch was based on the implicit assumption that what made it successful in its home market would be a winning formula in any other market. However, after almost a decade in China, Oreo cookies were not a hit as anticipated, according to Lorna Davis, in charge of the global biscuit division at Kraft. And the team even considered pulling Oreo out of the Chinese market altogether. Oreo developed a launch strategy around taking on existing market leaders in the cream segment - Britannia, Parle, and ITC. Internally, they even have an acronym for this strategy - TLD (Take Leaders Down). The focus was to target the top 10 million households which account for 70 percent of cream biscuit consumption. Oreo launched in India in March 2011. It entered the market as Cadbury Oreos because Cadbury is a stronger brand name than Kraft, and initially focused on generating awareness and rapid trials. The product was sweetened to suit the Indian palate and Kraft exploited Cadbury's network of 1.2 million stores. The Made in India tag meant using locally-sourced ingredients, modification of the recipe to suit Indian tastes and possibly cheaper ingredients, a smaller size and competitive prices. Oreo launched its traditional chocolate cookie with vanilla cream at Rs 5 for a pack of three to drive impulse purchases and trials, Rs 10 for a pack of seven and Rs 20 for a pack of 14 for heavy usage. The cookie looks the same as its international counterpart with a motif of 12 florets and 12 dashes. #Oreo #Oreo_Milkshake #FMCG Share, Support, Subscribe !!! BOMBTRACK AT THE "NRW-CROSS-CUP" (Kreuzweingarten 2018)

05:10
…think global - act local! When it comes to the different disciplines of bicycle racing, it is Cyclocross in particular that has fascinated us the most over the last years. At the start of the 2018 / 2019 season we combined 6, already partially established single Cyclocross races under our own, small Cyclocross Cup: the “BOMBTRACK NRW-CROSS-CUP (powered by Alexrims)”. Whilst the series is local with its races being based in the area around Cologne, they cover all racing categories (Kids to Pros). There’s a small pot of prize money for each category and the fastest riders get their travel costs covered. Each race has a completely unique, creative course and whilst they all offer a competitive aspect it is the general focus on fun that helps to attract the large number of starters. The whole series was set up simply for the love of the sport, but the NRW-CROSS-CUP also offers us a brilliant playground for our latest product developments subsequent testing. We encourage you to take a look; if you’re local and like what you see, feel free to join the remaining race in Pulheim, December 15th – or get involved for the entire 2019/2020 season! Tech Knowledge Episode 2 - Neuromodulation

02:27
Meet Lorena, a “newbie” at Abbott who is thrilled to be part of the Abbott crew that runs 99,000 deep. You would be too if you’d worked as hard to reach a goal as she has. Now that she’s here, she’s on a mission to showcase this groundbreaking company … all while being awesome at her day job as a product expert in therapeutic nutrition. As part of her introduction to All Things Abbott, she’ll hear details about our life-changing tech straight from the experts involved in bringing them to be. Join her as she explores our health breakthroughs that are helping people live their best lives, every day. This is Tech Knowledge, an online video series about Abbott innovations. Settle in. It’s going to be a fun ride. Deep brain stimulation! Science fiction or science fact? You can trust Lorena to find out. Imagine going from complete independence — where you like, when you like, how you like — to being unable to control your arms to brush your own teeth. It can be crushing, mentally and emotionally. For many people living with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor*, that disruption of their daily lives is a stark reality. Enter neuromodulation and deep brain stimulation (it’s OK if you’ve never heard those words before), where scientists use electrical stimulation to disrupt — or modulate — signals in the body to treat the symptoms of movement disorders. Lorena meets Brittany, who introduces her to our Infinity DBS system equipped with directional lead technology. The leads allow more precise stimulation to maximize care while reducing unwanted side effects, all within reach via an iOS device. All within reach. For people diagnosed with Parkinson’s and ET, those are words of sweet relief. *There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET), but there are options available to treat symptoms. The first-line therapy is medication. Surgical treatments are also available. It’s important to discuss with your doctor what’s right for you along with the risks and side effects of each option, such as motor fluctuations or permanent neurological impairment.   As with any surgery or therapy, deep brain stimulation has risks and complications. Most side effects of DBS surgery are temporary and correct themselves over time. Some people may experience lasting, stroke-like symptoms, such as weakness, numbness, problems with vision or slurred speech. In the event that the side effects are intolerable or you are not satisfied with the therapy, the DBS system can be turned off or surgically removed.   Risks of brain surgery include serious complications such as coma, bleeding inside the brain, paralysis, seizures and infection. Some of these may be fatal. Google 2.0: Why MIT scientists are building a new search engine | Danny Hillis

13:00
Read more at BigThink.com: Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Among other projects—you’re doing lots of stuff—you get involved in some very heady questions about the origins of truth on the internet. And this is where we’re getting folks because the work that Danny’s describing now in theory ultimately became a venture, right?Metaweb. Danny Hillis: So that’s right. So what I really thought is that what we need to do is have a way of representing the knowledge of the world in a way that machines can get at them, and take advantage of it—and that that should be shared. Everybody should be able to get at it. That is, in some sense if the human knowledge isn’t a shared resource—then what is? I mean what has civilization been doing all these years? So I created a company that built this database called Freebase. It was a free database. And the, and the company basically took any kind of public knowledge that we could get, information about anything and put it in machine-readable format. We were kind of creating with the idea that this is going to be useful to the world. We didn’t really have a business model. And we started building it up, and then it became useful to lots of different people including particularly all the search engines. So eventually Google bought it, of course. And then I got Google to agree to keep it open for three years, but they only kept the part that was already open open, and they started building it up. And so now Google has something called the Knowledge Graph which is the evolution of this. And it probably has about 100 billion different entities. So everybody in this room is in that graph. This building is in that graph. Peter Hopkins: Yes, I took a screenshot earlier of when you just Googled NeueHouse, and all of these different— Danny Hillis: That’s right. Neuehouse is obviously in the graph. So this event is, and yes. So anything like a person, a place, an event. Anything like that is in this huge knowledge base, and all the relationships between them are. So when you, for instance, print out a Google map, that is rendered from the Knowledge Graph; so the Knowledge Graph knows the bus schedules and it knows the address of the restaurant and the traffic. Peter Hopkins: It’s drawing all this information together around the thing that the searcher cares about. Danny Hillis: That’s right. So the map is just in some sense a custom rendering of a piece of the Knowledge Graph for your particular purpose. And also by the way, I don’t know – this doesn’t have any ads on it, but the other thing is that the ads are also like a lot of Knowledge Graph about what the products are about and whether—it probably has knowledge about you, specifically, and so on. So it’s gone way beyond the kind of public knowledge, also again it probably has very particular private knowledge about people too. Peter Hopkins: Now from Google’s perspective it’s safe to say that this is a quantum leap in terms of the original basis of its citation-based search model. All of a sudden it is now providing this multidimensional search that is drawing in way more richness. Danny Hillis: It still does the old kind of search. So right now when you, let’s say I put in museums of New York. You know, “museums in New York.” Well, it still does the old keyword search of searching for pages that have the word “museum” and the phrase “New York,” but it doesn’t—if you say “an exhibition in Manhattan” or something, you might have something that’s a museum in New York that actually didn’t use the word “museum” and “New York” on the page. But the Knowledge Graph knows that Manhattan is in New York, and it knows that exhibitions are in museums, or may know something is a museum even if it doesn’t use the word museum in its title.

Airbus Debuts A220, Rebranding the Bombardier CSeries Airliner – AINtv

03:03
Airbus has publicly launched the new A220 narrowbody airliner at the 2018 Farnborough Airshow following its acquisition and rebranding of Bombardier’s CSeries program. the A220 expands the Airbus portfolio into the 100-150 seat segment of the market, giving it a way to attract new customers who may go on to buy aircraft from its larger product ranges. The move is especially significant given that Airbus’s deadly rival Boeing seeks to expand its own product range through a proposed merger with Embraer’s commercial aircraft division. This will mean the U.S. manufacturer can offer both the Embraer E2 series and its own 737 Max family to compete with the A220/320 offering. Cast your vote at https://www.foreigninvestmenttrophy.be. Novartis invests in its production site in Puurs to drive the future of eyecare products. On February 27th, 2018, Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT) will be hosting its 6th consecutive Foreign Investment Trophy. The event will see 5 international companies – that announced or made an investment in the region of Flanders in the past year – compete for the Foreign Investment of the Year Trophy. One of the contestants is Swiss pharma giant Novartis. Koen Strobbe, general manager at Novartis Puurs, was happy to comment on the nomination during a tour at the company’s premises in Puurs, Flanders. “This place is called Hof van Coolhem, located in the heart of the asparagus region”, says Koen Strobbe, general manager at Alcon Novartis in Puurs. “Asparagus is a quality product that is obtained through diligent work and perseverance. We are happy to see these characteristics reflected in our employees as well. They are the reason why companies here along the Rijksweg are so successful.” “Alcon is one of the divisions of Novartis. We are a Novartis product site that makes eyedrops, eye ointment and viscoelastics. We also make ‘custom packs’: surgical packages that are used during cataract operations.” “Novartis has invested a lot in this production site recently, including a total investment of more EUR 100 million over the last 4 years. The main goal is to turn us into a site capable of producing biological products in the form of syringes. The first step was to build a new analytical laboratory that can analyze biological products. These investments have led to the installation of an isolator filling line.” “We produce over 220 million units of eyedrops. Our site is located in the heart of Flanders and Europe. We are an export-driven company: 98% of what we make is destined for export to 155 countries. From a distribution point of view, we are in the perfect spot. We can directly access the port, Brussels Airport … These are our main assets. Just come and see, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.” Discover the other nominees and vote for your favorite at https://www.foreigninvestmenttrophy.be. https://www.flandersinvestmentandtrade.com/invest
