Eric Rignot: Ice Sheet Systems and Sea Level Change (Sea level rise)

41:57
Scientific Discipline: Cryosphere Speaker: Eric Rignot (NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory) Abstract Modern views of ice sheets provided by satellites, airborne surveys, in situ data and paleoclimate records while transformative of glaciology have not fundamentally changed concerns about ice sheet stability and collapse that emerged in the 1970's. Motivated by the desire to learn more about ice sheets using new technologies, we stumbled on an unexplored field of science and witnessed surprising changes before realizing that most were coming too fast, soon and large. Ice sheets are integrant part of the Earth system; they interact vigorously with the atmosphere and the oceans, yet most of this interaction is not part of current global climate models. Since we have never witnessed the collapse of a marine ice sheet, observations and exploration remain critical sentinels. At present, these observations suggest that Antarctica and Greenland have been launched into a path of multi-meter sea level rise caused by rapid climate warming. While the current loss of ice sheet mass to the ocean remains a trickle, every mm of sea level change will take centuries of climate reversal to get back, several major marine-terminating sectors have been pushed out of equilibrium, and ice shelves are irremediably being lost. As glaciers retreat from their salty, warm, oceanic margins, they will melt away and retreat slower, but concerns remain about sea level change from vastly marine-based sectors: 2-m sea level equivalent in Greenland and 23-m in Antarctica. Significant changes affect 2/4 marine-based sectors in Greenland - Jakobshavn Isbræ. and the northeast stream - with Petermann Gl. not far behind. Major changes have affected the Amundsen Sea sector of West Antarctica since the 1980s. Smaller yet significant changes affect the marine-based Wilkes Land sector of East Antarctica, a reminder that not all marine-based ice is in West Antarctica. Major advances in reducing uncertainties in sea level projections will require massive, interdisciplinary efforts that are not currently in place but are getting there. Projection scenarios are overwhelmingly conservative, pushed up by observations, awaiting more detailed knowledge of ocean circulation, winds, ice-ocean interaction, and mechanics of rapid ice fracture, not to mention the mere definition of static boundaries (ice thickness and sea floor bathymetry). https://agu.confex.com/agu/fm15/meetingapp.cgi/Paper/60094 Related The John F. CIrcle – Critical Infrastructures: case Waterland, The Netherlands

03:10
In January 2016, it was 100 years since several dike breaches caused a great flood in the Waterland region of The Netherlands. Water Board Hollands Noorderkwartier wanted to raise awareness for flood risk and flood impact. A flood scenario similar to the conditions in 1916 was used to analyse the effects on critical infrastructure networks and cascading effects between these networks. The Water Board wants to use the results to gain more knowledge on the interdependencies between important networks within their region and how society is dependent on them.

Hydrodynamic Modeling On The Northwest European Shelf And North Sea

52:34
In this webinar we will focus on the continuous development and improvements in the operational tide-surge models of the Northwest European Shelf and in particular the North Sea and adjacent shallow seas and estuaries. For the Netherlands, accurate water-level forecasting in the coastal region is crucial, since large areas of the land lie below sea level. The importance of providing precise and reliable warnings is only enhanced by the presence of movable barriers such as the Eastern Scheldt Barrier and the Maeslant Barrier in the Rotterdam Waterway, which require the decision to close to be taken in advance and only when strictly necessary. In the past years a new generation tide-surge model (Dutch Continental Shelf Model version 6) has been developed covering the northwest European continental shelf, with a uniform cell size of about 1×1 nautical miles. During the model development many potential sources of error have been addressed, in particular through the use of parameter estimation techniques to decrease uncertainty in time-independent parameters. While this model has a tide representation that is substantially better than comparable models of this scale, increased model resolution in coastal regions (such as the Dutch estuaries and shallow seas like the Wadden Sea) is essential for improving the representation of higher harmonics and non-linear tide–surge interaction there. In addition a steady-state Kalman filter has been implemented to increase the predictive quality for the shorter lead times (up to approximately 12 h). We will show that Delft3D Flexible Mesh (Delft3D FM) produces accurate model results. In addition, developments and opportunities made possible by Delft3D FM are discussed. For example, by making use of the new flexibility that the unstructured grid allows, we have optimized the grid. This significantly reduces the computation time, while the accuracy remains of the same order. Finally, we will discuss on-going research including the development of a 3D transport model for the same area and a possibly baroclinically induced annual modulation of the M2 tide. The webinar was given by Mr. Firmijn Zijl (senior researcher, Deltares).

7 Facts about Tuvalu

More information about the video content bellow: 1. In the southern Pacific Ocean, few island nations enchant visitors quite like Tuvalu. Comprising nine small islands with a population of only about 10,000, Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries in the world. Formerly part of a larger area islands under British control, Polynesians on Tuvalu voted to separate from the Gilbert Island in 1974. Four years later, Tuvalu gained independence. 2. Funafuti Conservation Area is one of the best places to catch some beautiful natural sights including reefs, channel and a gorgeous lagoon. Thanks to its marine life diversity, it is an excellent spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. 3. Nui, Tuvalu is one of the most important islands in Tuvalu. The permanent settlement is on the main islet of Fenuatapu in Nui, Tuvalu. The Nui Island consists of 11 main islets. All the islets are separated by passages. The sea gushes through the passages from ocean to the lagoon. During low tide, people can walk across these passages from islet to islet. 4. The National Research Council in the United States predicted that by 2100 global sea levels would rise 55 inches due to climate change. If that prediction holds true, the rising sea levels could damage the country’s coral roots and wipe out Tuvalu altogether. By 2012, there was already coastal erosion, a result of the rising sea level, excavation for construction, and extreme weather. 5. The origins of the people of Tuvalu are addressed in the theories regarding migration into the Pacific that began about 3000 years ago. During pre-European-contact times there was frequent canoe voyaging between the nearer islands including Samoa and Tonga. Eight of the nine islands of Tuvalu were inhabited; thus the name, Tuvalu, means "eight standing together" in Tuvaluan. Possible evidence of fire in the Caves of Nanumanga may indicate human occupation for thousands of years. 6. The tiny island-nation of Tuvalu receives a yearly payment of almost $2.2 million for doing nothing at all. The is the money that the Tuvalu government receives from royalties from the country’s domain name, .tv! This ammount is about ten per cent of the government's total revenue. Domain name income paid most of the cost of paving the streets of Funafuti and installing street lighting in mid-2002. 7. Parents and children in Tuvalu usually do not have cordial relationships. However, relationships between grandparents and grandchildren, adoptive parents and adoptive children, and mother’s brother and sister’s child tend to be warm and affectionate. Within the family, you will notice that there is the most constrained cross-sex interaction between siblings, first, second, and even third cousins. Even today, they have to avoid each other totally except for things considered most necessary. Climbing Gunung (Mount) Agung - Bali's most sacred volcano

04:00
This video shows the climbing (or rather descending) of the sacred volcano Gunung (Mount) Agung, the holiest mountain in Bali, Indonesia. The highest point of this stratovolcano is 3142 m (or 9583 ft) According to the Balinese the volcano Gunung Agung is a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe. The most important temple on Bali - Pura Besakih - is the Mother Temple and is located on the slope of the mountain. Therefore the mountain may not be climbed on holy days. Gunung Agung is an active strato volcano and last erupted in 1963-1964. The mountain has a large and very deep crater which occasionally belches smoke and ash. From a distance, the mountain appears to be perfectly conical, despite the existence of the large crater. From the peak of the mountain, it is possible to see the peak of Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok, although both mountains are most often covered in clouds. 09/2017 ALERT STATUS: Due to current increased seismic activity and frequent tremors and lava flows (according to locals) under and on the volcano it is no longer possible to go trekking or climbing on or near mount Agung. Since mid September 2017 thousands of local people and tourists have been evacuated as authorities fear that the holy volcano might erupt. In fact there is currently a no go perimeter of 8 to 12 km from the summit. The last time Mount Agung erupted was in 1963-1964 killing an estimated 1100 people. The scuba diving resorts catering to tourists north of the volcano and close to the USAT Liberty wreck are within the perimeter and thus are no longer operational at the moment. More info on their websites and with your tour operator. The Airport in Denpasar, Ngurah Rai International may become unavailable in case of an eruption, so check before booking your air ticket to Bali. It seems the sea connection by slow ferry from Lombok to Bali is still operational. Melting Ice, Rising Seas (Part Two) - Dr Steve Rintoul, Research Team Leader, CSIRO Australia

15:41
Dedicated to all things on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, the Antarctic Report (https://www.antarcticreport.com) is an online portal published by Camino, a digital content and publishing company based in Auckland, New Zealand. The site showcases the hard science which underlines the importance of Antarctica as a bellwether of global climate change. It also highlights the continent's unique political status, as well as the exceptional demands its environment places on people and equipment, and the romantic allure for travellers and explorers as the least discovered continent on the planet. The Antarctic Report was born out of the highly successful World Science Week, which brought together more than 2,000 of the world’s leading scientists, researchers and government science advisors for a series of international science summits in Auckland during August and September 2014. These major global gatherings included the 31st triennial General Assembly of the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the 6th biennial Open Science Conference of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR). Many of the scientists took part in a series of public lectures sponsored by the Royal Society of New Zealand and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, with the support of both the University of Auckland and AUT University where the presentations were held. 'Melting Ice, Rising Seas' was a presentation by five of the world's leading experts on the current state of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and surrounding Southern Ocean, how climate change is impacting upon them, and the consequences for Planet Earth as the 21st century progresses. (The video recording of the seminar presented here is the second of four). Dr Stephen Rintoul is a physical oceanographer and climate scientist with a long-standing interest in the Southern Ocean and its role in the earth system. His research has contributed to a deeper appreciation of the influence of the Southern Ocean on global climate, biogeochemical cycles and biological productivity. He uses ships, satellites, floats and instrumented seals to explore the Southern Ocean and has led fourteen oceanographic expeditions to the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Dr Rintoul was a Coordinating Lead Author of the Oceans chapter in the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). 2015 officially hottest year on record

02:11
뜨거웠던 2015년…기온•온실가스•해수면 높이 모두 역대 최고 The state of the world climate isn't that great,... according to the latest data. 2015 was the hottest year on record both on land and at sea. On top of that,... symbolic milestones have also been reached on average temperatures and carbon dioxide concentrations. Kim Hye-sung has the details. 2015 was the hottest year since climate records began. According to the "State of the Climate" report by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released on Wednesday, last year was the first time that Earth's surface temperature exceeded those from the early and mid 19th century by more than one degrees Celsius. The report said the higher temperature was due to a combination of long-term climate change and a strong El Nino weather pattern. While 2015 saw the strongest El Nino in more than 50 years, the phenomenon was a short-term trigger to a long-term global warming caused by human activity. Concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide levels at Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, exceeded 400 parts per million for the first time. Sea levels also rised about 70 millimeters higher than the 1993 average, when detailed measurements first began. And the rapid changes in the climate led to extreme weather events in 2015. There were 101 recorded tropical cyclones last year, 20 more than the annual average from 1981 to 2010. In June last year, a severe heatwave claimed over 1,300 lives in Pakistan and 12 countries including Russia and China saw unusually high annual average temperatures. But what is more troubling about the report is that El Nino is likely to have an even greater impact on global surface temperatures this year. Already, according to NASA, the earth's surface temperatures and Arctic sea ice extent have broken numerous records through the first half of 2016. And the newly released climate report adds to increasing evidence demonstrating that unless immediate action is taken to address climate change, our planet will continue on a path leading to a very grim future. 2016 Lecture 06 Maps of Meaning: Part I: The primordial narrative

01:37:57
Our experience takes narrative form, under the influence of biological, cultural and uniquely individual forces. This is partly because our minds are based in social cognition. Experience manifests itself comprehensibly as the unknown itself, the great dragon of chaos; the unknown as we experience it, the great mother; culture, the great father, and the individual, the center of conscious being, Each of these categories manifests itself in action. Each has a positive and negative element. Want to support this channel? North America Ice age

43:45
FROM SHORT MINI ICE AGE TO LONG ICE AGE GLACIATION Global warming peaked in 1988 and slowly ending the Interglacial Warm Holidays to begin the short Mini Ice Age affecting all spectrum. After a return to short warming period, we expect a U-turn to long sleep of Ice Age Glaciation. It happened many times in the past, each time resetting Human evolution. During this shortcoming Ice Age, there won't be enough space to grow food and for comfort living, except between the two 33° latitudes north and south of the equator which is not enough lands, and there won't be enough cheap and fresh drinking water neither for mass survivals. Our SEAWAPA project is to harvest fresh drinking water from the 7 month monsoons and rains, the melting ice from Tibet and from the most abundant tropical cyclones region in the world on top of Lao mountain range, transfer it below via gravity by producing electricity, food, and goods, at the same time, distribute them to far-flung floating agricultural modules, to newly built megacities, and to industrial complex across the equator, between the tropical cyclones zone, connecting them to other continents, avoiding post ice age big melt danger. Once done, we can tap into the Primary Water Cycle for larger scale space programs, build Hyperloop transport system for universal distribution of drinking water, food, goods, electricity and heat, all year round. The heat and coldness redistribution across the world will minimize risks caused by Ice Age and post-Ice Age. Asteroids mining and universal commodity dispersion will allow humanity to progress beyond "Sustainability", and to solve other risks. http://SEAWAPA.org

The Magic Trick of the Century!

01:37
Want to see a magic trick 100-years in the making? You won't believe it until you see it! On December 29, 1916, the very first oil well in the Terrebonne-Timbalier Bay area of South Louisiana broke ground. In the century following, more than 52,000 oil and gas wells would litter the landscape, altering the hydrology and land cover of the fragile marsh environment. Companies dredged canals to reach remote pockets of carbon fuel, splitting the once cohesive marsh into isolated fragments of marsh grass. Once the marsh was split, the increased wave action from the boats going to and from the well sites, in addition to localized and regional subsidence and sea level rise, allowed salt water to penetrate farther into the land. The surviving lands, now inundated with salt water, started to shed their vegetation - the life-source of coastal ecosystems. Without the plants to trap and hold onto the sediment moving across the land, the marsh began to wash away. Once the edges washes away, the interior areas of the marsh became more exposed to the intruding salt water - both as a result of sea level rise and hurricane storm surge. Thus a feedback loop from Hell began, and more than 90% of the land in Terrebonne Bay on that day in December 1916 still stands today. The rest has been taken by the ocean, and all projections show this processes speeding up as the ocean continues to encroach upon communities still living on the last few ridges and levees that reach into the Bay like the flesh-less fingers of a hand. The coastal land loss crisis in Louisiana stems from a lethal mix of oil and gas production, dredging for navigation, and the combined forces of subsidence and sea level rise. This video shows the oil and gas development in the region from the first well in 1916, to the most recent well permitted in June 2016. Land loss over time was analyzed using aerial and satellite imagery, land surveys and topographic maps throughout the display period (USGS,NOAA). The causes of land loss over time, previously investigated by USGS/NOAA, have been paired with the well site and canal permits granted by local, parish, state and federal authorities. This video shows the finest resolution of land loss by cause to date, and the results are a startling, almost unbelievable erasing of land along the coast. To learn how one Native American community still standing on the coast is coping with and adapting to these changes, visit our online interactive story map: http://www.arcgis.com/apps/MapSeries/index.html?appid=75f4f8a0007f432b876d94ced6649422 Original music has been altered and/or modified by use of track speed, pitch, and cut, replayed and additional tracks added under Fair Use.

This was a Level 7 nuclear event, comparable only to Chernobyl. 1. Unheeded Warning Before the disaster even happened, there were industry experts who warned of mega tsunami-generating earthquakes hitting the area every 800 to 1100 years, with the next one being overdue. But those in charge dismissed such warnings. 2. No Good Robots During the crisis at Fukushima, high radiation levels at the plant made it desperately hard for human workers to do what they needed to do. Back in 2001, the Japanese had actually developed extremely capable robots that were deemed technical successes, but then a government task force concluded that a Chernobyl-scale disaster was never going to happen in Japan . The program was shut down and the robots were dismantled or donated. 3. Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant The Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant was the closest power plant to the earthquake epicentre, yet it successfully withstood the barrage. While the Fukushima Plant had sea walls up to 5.7 meters, Onagawa had it up to 14 meters. 4. Wrongful Evacuation Due to miscommunication between the evacuation authorities and the experts who were analysing the fallout, many residents were evacuated from pretty safe areas right INTO the radioactive plume. 5. Evacuation Deaths More people were killed by the evacuation process in Fukushima than by the actual earthquake and tsunami, the disaster itself. People died of fatigue, exhaustion, illness, suicides - losing their homes, not knowing where they would end up, cramped evacuation centres; the whole ordeal was taxing. 6. Geiger-Counter Hobby After the Fukushima disaster, random radiation hot spots were discovered in unexpected locations. Radiation levels as high as those in the no-go zone were detected as far as some Tokyo suburbs. This prompted many Japanese residents to take up a new hobby - walking with Geiger-counters through their city or village in search for random radiation levels to report. 7. Animal Guardian 55 year old Naoto Matsumura is the only man brave enough to live in Fukushima’s no-go zone. After the initial evacuation, he returned back to take care of the animals that were left behind. Not just his animals, but everyone’s. 8. Mutations There were a few small scale Fukushima discoveries. 9. Human Radiation Effects No one died from radiation exposure in Fukushima. And contrary to a well-publicised, yet poorly-executed, study that made the rounds in 2015, thyroid cancer rates in Fukushima children were actually lower than the national average. 10. Disobedient Hero Masao Yoshida was the manager of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant and on March 15th 2011, he lead a brave group, now dubbed ‘The Fukushima 50’ into the radioactive trenches. With cooling systems crippled and having run out of fresh water, Yoshida decided they would pump seawater straight from the ocean into the damaged reactors. Then corporate headquarters (TEPCO) ordered him to stop the seawater injection. They didn’t want the corrosive seawater to permanently damage their reactors. Feeling his superiors were inept for risking a colossal radioactive fallout, Yoshida disobeyed the direct order and continued with the seawater injection. Many experts now agree that his actions on that day arguably prevented a much greater catastrophe. ----------------------- ABOUT We do videos on interesting 'Asiany' topics - Asian stereotypes, Asian pop culture, Asian issues, Asian history, AMWF, and things you just didn't know about Asia! You Have the Right to Remain Silent – California Bill Strengthens Miranda for Kids

04:51
Take Action: http://fairsentencingforyouth.org/miranda-rights-for-youth/ Currently in California, children—no matter how young— can waive their Miranda rights. When law enforcement conducts a custodial interrogation, they are required to recite basic constitutional rights to the individual, known as Miranda rights, and secure a waiver of those rights before proceeding. The waiver must be voluntarily, knowingly, and intelligently made. Miranda waivers by juveniles present distinct issues. Recent advances in cognitive science research have shown that the capacity of youth to grasp legal rights is less than that of an adult. This is especially true for very young, developmentally disabled, or cognitively delayed children, and for those with mental health problems.

Sandi Matsumoto - What We Can Learn from California’s Central Valley Streams

20:32
Sustainable Groundwater Management: What We Can Learn from California’s Central Valley Streams Sandi Matsumoto1, The Nature Conservancy, [email protected], CC 19165966671 Groundwater is intimately connected to surface water, which has profound implications for sustainable water resource management. California has historically overlooked this important interaction and as a consequence, decisions about groundwater extractions have generally failed to address the resulting impacts to surface flows and aquatic ecosystems such as rivers, wetlands and springs. This has contributed to a loss of approximately 95 percent of the historical wetlands and river habitat in California’s Central Valley. With the passage of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), groundwater sustainability agencies across the state will soon be required to manage groundwater resources to avoid causing undesirable results to groundwater levels and interconnected groundwater and surface water. These groundwater levels and areas of interconnection support groundwater-dependent ecosystems (GDEs). Therefore, an important first step in sustainable groundwater management is to understand how groundwater pumping impacts surface water, including streams, and GDEs. To build the case for ecosystem protections now found in SGMA, The Nature Conservancy completed a study to illustrate how groundwater pumping is affecting streams and rivers in California’s Central Valley. The report uses an integrated hydrologic model to reconstruct the historical impacts of groundwater use on groundwater levels and stream flow conditions. Our study focused on the state’s Central Valley because of its importance in California’s overall water supply. We used a model developed by the Department of Water Resources (DWR) to simulate the Central Valley’s hydrologic conditions during the years from 1922 to 2009, a period during which groundwater production grew threefold. The results reveal profound impacts to the stream flow conditions due to increased groundwater pumping. Across the Tulare Basin, San Joaquin Basin and Sacramento Valley these changes have differed in magnitude, but share a similar trend. In areas with hydraulic connection between groundwater and surface water, increases in groundwater extraction continue to cause declines in groundwater levels that reduce stream flow. In many of these historically interconnected areas, declines in groundwater levels have caused segments of streams to change from gaining to losing reaches. In other words, portions of streams that once gained surface flows from groundwater were converted to losing reaches, where surface flows are being lost to groundwater. This reversal from gaining streams to losing streams has been most dramatic in the Tulare Basin, which converted largely by the 1920’s, with the San Joaquin Basin largely converting in the 1960’s. Our results indicate that the Sacramento Valley may be at a tipping point in this transformation, with some areas likely beginning to lose stream flows to groundwater. The results of our study pre-date the extended drought that began in 2011 and it is likely that the drought has exacerbated stream depletions. In addition, our study illustrates that the effects of groundwater pumping can take years – even decades– to recover. This means that the full extent of the impacts of groundwater pumping during the drought will continue to plague California for many years.

Forecasting Ashfall Impacts from a Yellowstone Supereruption

56:47
Presenter: Larry Mastin, USGS Hydrologist - Yellowstone is one of a few dozen volcanoes on earth capable of "supereruptions" that expel more than 1,000 cubic km of ash and debris. - The plumes from such eruptions can rise 30 to 50 km into the atmosphere, three to five times as high as most jets fly. - Yellowstone has produced three supereruptions in the past 2.1 million years. The most recent was 0.6 million years ago. - Eruptions this large can create their own continental- scale wind field, pushing ash more than 1,000 km against the prevailing, ambient wind field.

Increasing Roles of Seismic Measurements in Geotechnical Eng. -2008 Buchanan Lecture by Stokoe

02:39:02
The Spencer J. Buchanan Lecture Series on the GeoChannel is presented by the Geo-Institute of ASCE. For more information about the Geo-Institute: www.geoinstitute.org The 16th Spencer J. Buchanan Lecture in the Department of Civil Engineering at Texas A&M University was given by Kenneth H. Stokoe on Nov. 14, 2008. "The Increasing Roles of Seismic Measurements in Geotechnical Engineering" Abstract: OVERVIEW The geotechnical engineer has always been faced with the problem of characterizing near-surface materials. The near-surface region is often within 10 to 100 m of the ground surface. Traditionally, field exploration programs have involved boring, sampling, and penetration testing. In the 1960s, in situ geophysical measurements began to be employed in geotechnical engineering. This work primarily involved seismic (stress wave) measurements which were adapted from exploration geophysics. Seismic measurements were used to characterize geotechnical sites (e.g. layering, top of bedrock, depth to water table) and geotechnical materials (e.g. stiffnesses in shear and compression). The real demand for seismic measurements grew out of the need to evaluate the dynamic properties of near-surface soils, specifically the shear-wave velocity, Vs. Shear-wave velocity is a key parameter in soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Today, however, in situ seismic measurements are used in many more applications as discussed in this lecture and in the articles included in the booklet. About Kenneth H. Stokoe: Dr. Stokoe has been working in the areas of in situ seismic measurements, laboratory measurements of dynamic material properties, and dynamic soil-structure interaction for the past 35 years. He was instrumental in developing the crosshole seismic method for in-situ shear wave velocity measurement to the method that has been adopted as the standard by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM D4428M) and the method that is used by geotechnical engineering firms worldwide. He has also developed a combined torsional shear/resonant column system which is now used by many universities and private firms in the U.S., Europe and Asia to evaluate dynamic material properties. In the last 30 years, Dr. Stokoe has conducted major research efforts in the areas of: 1. nondestructive testing (NDT) of pavements, runways and geotechnical systems, and 2. laboratory evaluation of soil and rock stiffnesses under cyclic and dynamic loading conditions. He and his colleagues have developed the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) method for testing geotechnical and pavement systems and structural components. Dr. Stokoe has conducted major studies using the SASW method to evaluate earth dams for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, the Icelandic government and Delft Geotechnical Laboratories and to evaluate debris slides for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Italian government. He has also conducted comparison studies of the downhole seismic method with the SASW method for the U.S. Geological Survey and has performedextensive SASW investigations at the proposed high-level nuclear storage site at Yucca Mountain for the U.S Department of Energy. Dr. Stokoe has participated in numerous demonstration projects involving SASW testing of airport runways and taxiways over the past 20 years. Testing has been performed at McDill, Homestead, and Tyndell Air Force Bases. Testing was also performed at the Cannon International Airport in Reno, Nevada and the Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa, California. Over the past 10 years, Dr. Stokoe has applied the SASW method at John F. Kennedy Airport to evaluate changes beneath runways and taxiways due to micro-tunneling activities. As part of his activities in NDT of pavements, Dr. Stokoe and his colleagues have been actively involved in developing dynamic linear and nonlinear analyses for modeling and understanding falling weight deflectometer (FWD) measurements. He and Dr. Roesset have presented and published papers at the Transportation Research Board Meeting in this area. They have been successful in extracting the static pavement response from the dynamic FWD test as well as calculating the depth to bedrock from free vibrations of the pavement system in 120- to 180-ms long records. 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation?

02:00:59
What may have started as a science fiction speculation—that perhaps the universe as we know it is a computer simulation—has become a serious line of theoretical and experimental investigation among physicists, astrophysicists, and philosophers. Neil deGrasse Tyson, Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium, hosts and moderates a panel of experts in a lively discussion about the merits and shortcomings of this provocative and revolutionary idea. The 17th annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate took place at The American Museum of Natural History on April 5, 2016. 2016 Asimov Panelists: David Chalmers Professor of philosophy, New York University Zohreh Davoudi Theoretical physicist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology James Gates  Theoretical physicist, University of Maryland Lisa Randall Theoretical physicist, Harvard University Max Tegmark  Cosmologist, Massachusetts Institute of Technology The late Dr. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific and influential authors of our time, was a dear friend and supporter of the American Museum of Natural History.  In his memory, the Hayden Planetarium is honored to host the annual Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate — generously endowed by relatives, friends, and admirers of Isaac Asimov and his work — bringing the finest minds in the world to the Museum each year to debate pressing questions on the frontier of scientific discovery.  Proceeds from ticket sales of the Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates benefit the scientific and educational programs of the Hayden Planetarium. 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: De-Extinction https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LnAtMeSVeY&index=1&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2016 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Is the Universe a Simulation? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgSZA3NPpBs&index=2&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2015 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Water, Water https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSF79uS3t04&index=3&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2014 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Selling Space https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbmFeEIKBFI&index=4&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2013 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Existence of Nothing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OLz6uUuMp8&index=5&t=25s&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ 2012 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: Faster Than the Speed of Light https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qlLW60wOjo&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=6 2011 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate: The Theory of Everything https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eb8_3BUHcuw&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&index=7 Rose Center Anniversary Isaac Asimov Debate: Is Earth Unique? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ji_GdAk9vU&index=8&list=PLrfcruGtplwGKzxDI_Ne06NlpOKt-yonZ&t=25s *** Subscribe to our channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_c... Critical Steps to Tackle India's Water Crisis - An Interactive Session with Dr. Ravi Chopra

46:34
India is in the midst of a little recognized water crisis. It will become more severe due to reducing rainy days every monsoon as a result of global warming. Water harvesting in big dams is outmoded in the context of our 'new' understanding of the last century regarding the nature of rivers and their functions. Spring shed development and farm ponds help us harvest water where rain falls and where it is needed. We also need to look at need cultivation approaches to increasing crop yields with less utilization of water. Finally, we have to focus on water quality so that the increasingly scarce resource becomes more usable. Dr Ravi Chopra is a recipient of IIT-Bombay's 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr Ravi Chopra is Member, Development Staff at People's Science Institute, Dehra Doon. The Institute is a non-profit public interest research and development organization, known for its pioneering work in the areas of water resources management, environmental quality monitoring, disaster mitigation and conservation of rivers. Between October '13 and April '14 Dr Chopra chaired an Experts Body to examine the environmental damage caused by hydropower dams in Uttarakhand. It was appointed by India's Ministry of Environment and Forests on the order of the Supreme Court. Between 2009 and 2013 he was an Expert Member of the National Ganga River Basin Authority chaired by then Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh. Dr Chopra has served on various committees of the Union Ministries of Rural Development and Water Resources, India's Planning Commission and the state governments of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. Recognizing that redressal of the problems that he works on is often in the hands of legislators, Dr. Chopra maintains regular contact with the senior leaders of India's various political parties at the state and national levels. Euphrates Shield The Rising Storm

01:08:20
(Isa 21:1) The burden of the wilderness of the sea. As whirlwinds in the South sweep through, it cometh from the wilderness, from a terrible land. (Isa 21:2) A grievous vision is declared unto me; the treacherous man dealeth treacherously, and the destroyer destroyeth. Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Media; all the sighing thereof have I made to cease. (Isa 21:3) Therefore are my loins filled with anguish; pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail: I am pained so that I cannot hear; I am dismayed so that I cannot see. (Isa 21:4) My heart fluttereth, horror hath affrighted me; the twilight that I desired hath been turned into trembling unto me. (Isa 21:5) They prepare the table, they set the watch, they eat, they drink: rise up, ye princes, anoint the shield. (Isa 21:6) For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a watchman: let him declare what he seeth: (Isa 21:7) and when he seeth a troop, horsemen in pairs, a troop of asses, a troop of camels, he shall hearken diligently with much heed. (Isa 21:8) And he cried as a lion: O Lord, I stand continually upon the watch-tower in the day-time, and am set in my ward whole nights; (Isa 21:9) and, behold, here cometh a troop of men, horsemen in pairs. And he answered and said, Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the graven images of her gods are broken unto the ground. (Isa 21:10) O thou my threshing, and the grain of my floor! that which I have heard from Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you. http://www.dailysabah.com/war-on-terror/2016/08/24/turkish-military-launches-operation-euphrates-shield-to-clear-daesh-from-northern-syria http://www.dailysabah.com/war-on-terror/2016/08/24/operation-euphrates-shield-to-continue-until-ypg-retreats-pm-yildirim-says http://www.dailysabah.com/war-on-terror/2016/08/24/us-military-contributing-to-turkeys-jarablus-offensive-us-official-says http://www.dailysabah.com/columns/nagehan-alci/2016/08/27/euphrates-shield-turning-point-for-middle-east http://www.longwarjournal.org/archives/2016/08/turkeys-operation-euphrates-shield-is-a-message-to-the-kurds.php http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inpictures/2016/08/operation-euphrates-shield-ends-isil-rule-jarablus-160825085704650.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baghdad#Etymology http://rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/260820162 https://www.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-foreign-minister-arrives-baghdad-strengthen-ties/ http://rudaw.net/english/kurdistan/27082016 http://www.thebandsoftime.com/notes/euphrates-shield-the-rising-storm

Building Energy Data Visualization Solutions for Cities (Webinar)

01:13:14
With more and more cities, counties, and states gathering building energy and water use information through benchmarking programs, attention is beginning to shift to how to use that information in ways that can effectively raise market awareness, and encourage building owners to take the next steps to improve the performance of their buildings. Over the past 18 months a number of cities have launched data visualization platforms, to take their benchmarking data and present it on an interactive map that allows the public to quickly see variations in city wide performance, or drill down to learn more about the performance of individual buildings. Please join the Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) as we host a webinar to learn about three examples of data visualization mapping applications that have been developed to address this need: 1. Nikhil Nadkarni (Climate and Buildings Program Manager for the City of Boston) will discuss Boston’s Building Energy Reporting system, which was launched in October 2014 as a platform to share selected metrics on reporting buildings with the public. The City used its internal resources, including an existing web map and open data tools, to create this. 2. Jim Stanley (General Manager for Stamen Design) will discuss the Chicago Energy Benchmarking platform they developed for the city of Chicago, as part of the city’s participation in the City Energy Project. This platform has been developed as an open source “packaged” solution, allowing them to deliver a relatively low cost solution for other cities with similar needs. 3. Laurie Kerr (Policy Director for Urban Green) will discuss Metered New York, a platform that displays benchmarking data contextually along with other local information such as incentives. This was originally created for NYC by Urban Green, the New York Affiliate of the U.S. Green Building Council, but can be easily adapted for use by other cities because of its modular features and CMS-style back-end. Each of these presenters will provide a short demo of their platform, describe the high level project goals they were hoping to achieve, and shed light on the budget range, staffing, and other resource needs cities should anticipate for development, initial launch, and on-going maintenance.

Anonymous OpSafeWinter 2016 Re Engaged

04:11
Greetings, we are Anonymous. We come to you asking for your help in making life more bearable for those less fortunate. When compassion, tolerance and peace are hard to find, it falls to ordinary citizens to show there is still love and respect in the world. Operation Safe Winter remains focused on caring for human beings on multiple levels. The first level is the human level: this is the compassionate act of giving time, resources, or just an attentive ear to those suffering in homelessness and poverty. This includes people who are homeless in urban settings, rural communities and victims of the global refugee crisis. These individuals may have much to offer the global community, but they cannot do so without proper support and respect. The Second level of Operation Safe winter activity is on the systematic level: This is the act of calling out the greed and injustices that put all people at risk of homelessness. This is not limited to awareness efforts, but also vindicating anyone that is demonized, criminalized or otherwise harassed for attempting to help those in need. Anyone standing in the way of Operation Safe Winter’s noble mission should expect us! We ask you to help us help those who are suffering the most in our societies, we DO NOT ask for donations of money. Willingness to listen and even a smile can change a person’s day, but a blanket, some warm clothes or even a sandwich can change a person’s life. Never underestimate the positive impact you can have on the life of another. There are many ways to participate in the Operation Safe Winter. You can build or contribute to existing interactive maps showing the locations of shelter, soup kitchens, advice centre's, and services worldwide. It is often helpful to list the resources in your community. These lists can be shared online, in your community and with other members of Operation Safe winter trying to connect resources with people who need them. It may also be beneficial to coordinate with none profit, churches, community support initiatives, and activists in your area so long as they are dedicated to the mission of helping the homeless. Perhaps the most direct way to participate in Operation Safe Winter is to encourage volunteer units to help donations to be distributed out to those in need. Try to work with already established groups to maximize your efforts. Remember that donations such as shoes, socks, hats, gloves, coats, food and water are most critically needed. Anyone can join Anonymous and Operation Safe Winter. You do not need to be a hacker, you simply need to care. As individuals we can save lives, together we can change the world. We are Anonymous. We are legion. We may forgive but. We will never forget. Operation Safe winter continues Expect us.
