Sea Level Basics

57:14
Download at http://itsrainmakingtime.com/2010/nilsaxelmorner/ Perhaps the most graphically disturbing piece of information in the climate arena is the assertion that sea levels will rise to a catastrophic degree. An Inconvenient Truth scared many people, and the sea level issue continues to worry them. The imagery from the movie is still etched in our minds and hearts. Imagery is powerful even if it is untrue. It lingers in the subconscious mind, where it can affect our ability to think critically and receive whole-systems information. We must be vigilant to prevent this. In this show, Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner clarifies many misconceptions about rising sea levels and offers a comprehensive understanding of this subject. Dr Mörner is highly qualified to speak on the matter. He was the former President of International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA). Under his charge, when INQUA Commission on Sea Level Changes and Coastal Evolution, after deliberations and discussions at several international meetings, declared a possible sea level change of +5 cm ±15cm by the year 2100, it was based on a huge amount of world-wide data gathered by scientists from different parts of the globe. Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner got his Ph.D in geology in 1969, and has worked with sea level problems for 40 years in areas scattered all over the globe. As the head of Paleogeophysics & Geodynamics at Stockholm University, he worked with many different geological & geophysical problems. He organized two major international conferences: one on Earth Rheology, Isostasy and Eustasy in 1977 and one on Climate Changes on a Yearly to Millennial Basis in 1983. He has run several international field excursions through Sweedon and was President of the INQUA Commission on Neotectonics (1981-1989). He was President of INQUA Commission on Sea Level Changes and Coastal Evolution from 1999-2003. He headed the INTAS Project on Geomagnetism and Climate (1997-2003). In 2000, he launched an international sea level research project in the Maldives. Among his numerous publications, one may note the studies on: the interaction among isostasy and eustasy, the oscillating regional eustatic curve of NW Europe, the changing geoid concept, the redefinition of the concept of eustasy, the dynamic-rotational redistribution of oceanic water masses, the interchange of angular momentum between the hydrosphere and solid Earth, and finally the new sea level curve of the Maldives with an absence of signs of any on-going sea level rise. In 2008 he was awarded The Golden Condrite of Merit from University of Algarve (at an international sea level meeting in Portugal). Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner's extensive hands-on experience and 40 years of mindful focus bring valuable context to the climate change debate. Is the IPCC giving us an accurate picture? Tune in and find out!

Science Bulletins: Early Migration for Modern Humans

02:02
When did modern humans make their first appearance in Europe? A jawbone excavated in England and two molars found in southern Italy suggest that modern humans migrated northward thousands of years earlier than previously thought. These fossils were discovered and interpreted decades ago but recent analysis pushed back the age of the jawbone, while positively identifying the much-older molars as modern human. The latest Human Bulletin from the Museum's Science Bulletins program explains how this new data suggests a much longer period of interaction between humans and Neanderthals in northern Europe. Visitors to AMNH may view the video in the Hall of Human Origins until February 9, 2012. Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History. Find out more about Science Bulletins at http://www.amnh.org/sciencebulletins/.

OpenFLUID - Roujan catchment hydrology

00:10
The objective of this example is to simulate the hydrographs in different positions on the hydrographic network of a farmed catchment. We can observe the genesis of the runoff, the rise in water and the fall in level. Also, we can observe the spatial variability of the water volume and its increase from usptream to downstream The hydrological model MHYDAS (Modélisation Hydrologique Distribuée des Agrosystèmes - Distributed Hydrological Modeling of Agrosystems) is used in this example to simulate the infiltration-runoff partition on the agricultural fields, the routing on the fields and the routing into the hydrographic network. This model is composed of 4 coupled simulation functions for OpenFLUID. This model is applied to the studied zone (Roujan catchment, 0.91km2) which is represented by 609 spatial units of SU classes (agricultural fields) and RS classes (ditches network). Relations between these spatial units (oriented topology) are determined by the Geo-MHYDAS tool, with is based on several spatial information layers (DEM, vector geometry...) The animation shows the evolution of the logarithm of the simulated water volume (m3/s) for each ditch segment during the rain event of June 5th, 1997 (characterized by 25 mm total rainfall in 5 hours). This event is simulated with a 60 seconds time step between 6 am to 1 pm. Moussa, R., Voltz, M. and Andrieux, P., 2002. Regional News Network: After the Storm Could All The Flooding Have Been Avoided (November 2012)

11:05
As seen in this mid-November 2012 broadcast of "Richard French Live" - an Emmy Award winning interactive, progressive news talk show on the Regional News Network (RNN) - Stony Brook University (SBU) oceanography professor and storm surge expert Dr. Malcolm Bowman provided insight into superstorm Sandy's flooding in the metro New York area and the possiblity of storm barriers. The eight-minute interview with Bowman, during which he also discussed the controversy over climate change, was followed by a debate-style panel discussion with French and some guests about whether or not the flooding could have been avoided. RNN is a independent 24/7 content provider who's network reaches more than six million homes throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. "If we had implemented these barriers by now," Bowman said, "there would have been no damage to New York from the ocean." These barriers are high tech. In one design, a wall lies flat at the bottom of the harbor, pivoting up when needed to block the storm surge. And they've proven effective in other major coastal regions, like London and the Netherlands, operating 24 hours a day. But one proposal for New York's harbor runs upwards of $6 Billion and skeptics say that the barriers may not work on long stretches of coastline, like the Jersey Shore. But, with damage estimates from superstorm Sandy reaching into the billions ($20 billion and, perhaps, beyond), many are saying it is now time to consider new ideas. During the broadcast, French asks Bowman: "What would you say to those who say this is just a 1 in 100 year type phenomenon. We shouldn't be building policy around something we haven't seen before." "If you look at Hurricane Irene and now Hurricane Sandy, we have two 100 year events 12 months apart," says Bowman. "So, I feel we are in an era of changine weather patterns that we have to take very seriously. And, I'm not going to say that we're going to have an event like this every year, but in our planning for the protection of New York City and the surrounding area, we need to rethink our policy." On the topic of climate change, Bowman says, "I'm not saying that Irene and Sandy proved climate change, but they are consistent with climate change. It's like building a case and they are Exhibits A and B. We're going to see Exhibits C, D, E and F coming along that we must be prepared for." How could a barrier like the ones used overseas work in New York? Bowman says, "What I've been proposing is a five-mile barrier from the northern tip of New Jersey (Sandy Hook) across to Far Rockaway in New York. This would be a six-lane toll road interstate highway with the water flow underneath, like an elevated causeway. There would be large gates that shipping can pass through. Under normal conditions, the gates would be slammed shut." "The advantage of this particular location over other we've looked at," Bowman continues, "is that it would form complete protection for Staten Island, the south shore of Long Island, Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Airports, Port Elizabeth in New Jersey, Manhattan's business district, the Raritan river communities - all those communities that have suffered so dreadfully [as a result of Sandy]." In terms of prioritizing what to protect, Bowman says: "[Though] we cannot save the whole East Coast from the ravages of climate change, rising sea level and extreme storms, we have to focus on New York City and it's importance on the global scene - it's the center of finance, medicine, science, the arts and [home to] 8-12 million people." For the last decade, New York Sea Grant (NYSG) has provided principal funding to Bowman and SBU's School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) Storm Surge Research Group to work on storm surge science, coastal defense systems and policy issues related to regional protection of New York City and Long Island. The Group was initially formed to develop coastal early warning system for emergency response against flooding in Metropolitan New York. Big Ice Sheets Doing Big Things: Why It's a Big Deal

01:13:49
This loss of ice in areas of the World such as Antarctica and Greenland is causing an increasing rate of sea-level rise, making it critically important to provide accurate predictive models as a basis for policymakers and citizens to take action. The challenges to science are great, and a more detailed understanding of ice-sheet dynamics is urgently needed. In an illustrated lecture, the fourth in a series of programs in 2011 presented through a partnership between the Science, Technology and Business Division of the Library of Congress, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, scientist Robert Bindschadler presents his theories as to why this is occurring. Speaker Biography: NASA scientist Robert Bindschadler is an expert on glaciers and ice sheets. Climate Wikience: Mean Sea Level Pressure

00:12
Climate Wikience is freely available at http://wikience.donntu.edu.ua Climate Wikience provides 3D interactive visualizations for over 700 global climate datasets for up to 169 years. Those include 3D isolines for pressure, temperature, humidity, 3D surfaces for water vapor, cloud properties, and 3D cyclone tracks. A user is not required to download or store any data files. The data are retrieved in real time over Internet from the remote datacenter as necessary. All time points within claimed periods are always available for immediate visualization by a mouse click. This removes the feeling of a "heavy data" in spite of their volumes and complex formats making for the first time their exploration as light and simple as a slideshow view. Climate Wikience significantly broadens the research audience of vast climatic datasets and offers unprecedented opportunities to better understand and, hence, prepare and adapt to storm events, heat waves, floods, severe weather conditions and future climate.

19. Ocean Bathymetry and Water Properties

50:37
The Atmosphere, the Ocean and Environmental Change (GG 140) Plate tectonics and ocean bathymetry are discussed. Bathymetry is the study of ocean depth, which is affected in some regions by plate tectonics and mantle dynamics. Mid-ocean ridges are formed at plate boundaries where mantle material is rising to the ocean crust and solidifying as it cools to form new ocean crust material. Seamounts are volcanoes that have formed from molten mantle material pushing up through the ocean crust, but these volcanoes lie below sea level. These features are measured using acoustic depth profiling. Ocean water properties, such as temperature and salinity, as well as the methods used to measure them are also discussed. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Plate Tectonics 17:12 - Chapter 2. What Scientists Are Seeing Over Antarctica

08:34
NASA's Operation IceBridge has launched its Antarctic 2012 campaign, flying high-priority missions measuring polar ice from a base of operations at the tip of Patagonia on the Strait of Magellan. They have even made a return visit to the Pine Island Glacier, the site of last year's discovery of a massive rift in the ice. Sea ice doesn't always hold the allure of a massive ice sheet, or a crevassed blue glacier spilling between mountains, but it comes in array of shapes and sizes and has its own ephemeral beauty. Operation IceBridge studies sea ice at both poles, and also runs across interesting formations on route to other targets. Operation IceBridge returned to the Pine Island Glacier twice in 2012, and NASA glaciologist Kelly Brunt discusses the implications of the glacier's impending calving event. Operation IceBridge has now returned to the Pine Island Glacier, not once, but twice in 2012. And the year-old giant crack in the glacier, poised to create an iceberg the size of New York City? Well it's still there, and that iceberg has yet to break free. But the rift has grown longer, much wider, and spawned a secondary crack. Before we talk about when that mighty berg will be born, let's take a look at the IceBridge missions themselves. IceBridge's first return to the region was a high altitude flight over the entire region, including the Thwaites, Smith, and Kohler glaciers. After this campaign is over, scientists will be able to compare this broad survey with previous years' measurements in order to better document the rapid and widespread changes in the region over time.

Seeking Ways to Reduce Overfishing

03:00
From VOA Learning English, this is the Agriculture Report in Special English. The pressure to feed Asia's growing population has led to dangerous levels of overfishing near Pacific coastlines. An example can be found in Sindangan, a fishing town in the southern Philippines. Wild catches are falling while prices are rising. One fisherman says the area's once healthy fish stocks are in danger because of an increase in the number of fishing boats.Across the South China Sea, fish catches near shore have dropped since the 1980s. That drop has pushed fishermen farther offshore and into bigger boats. An official with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, says some fishing methods are destructive. Benjamin Francisco says the use of fine mesh nets or explosives catch young fish before they can ever reproduce. This hurts fish stocks. The fish warden in Sindangan says most of the local fishermen use fine mesh nets. But these nets have been banned for years because they catch very young fish.To deal with problems like this the FAO has been supporting the idea of licensing systems. The aim is to limit the number of fishing boats on the water. Asia has the world's largest fishing fleets. They represent nearly three million of the world's four million fishing vessels. And most estimates say that the numbers are increasing. In Hong Kong, there are increased efforts to supervise fleets and to ban trawling for fish near shore. More than $200 million is being spent in an effort to increase catches by small fishing operations. But Hong Kong's measures are costly. FAO official Benjamin Francisco says a lot of governments in Asia do not have enough money or the ability to copy them. For VOA Learning English, I'm Alex Villarreal.

Great Lakes Water - NASA DEVELOP Fall 2012 @ Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative

03:57
As population and urban sprawl increase in the Great Lakes region, the interaction between humans and the near-shore habitat is escalating. Shoreline development contributes to an increase in stormwater discharge into the surrounding streams, rivers, and lakes, adversely impacting the water quality and raising concern for the delicate near-shore ecosystems. The U.S./Canadian Great Lakes are some of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, surrounded by large cities and agricultural expanses in a climatically wet region. These factors have contributed to the Great Lakes facing a substantial stormwater runoff impact and one that has become an important policy concern for the region. In order to effectively govern the impact of stormwater runoff, policymakers are in need of a more thorough and scientifically-based understanding of the impacts associated with the issue. This project looks to provide a synoptic view of the near-shore interaction by using NASA Earth observations to map and monitor both the land and water environments. Specific extreme precipitation events were identified through weather station data, as well as Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) observed rainfall measurements so that the impact of extreme events on water quality was analyzed. To monitor water quality levels following extreme rainfall/snowmelt events, a time series of maps of chlorophyll anomalies and total suspended sediment (TSS) were generated using MODIS products. The data from this suite of sensors was analyzed for relationships between shoreline-adjacent land cover and near-shore water quality to improve understanding of that interaction for policymakers and assist in the establishment of a baseline for future sustainable growth.
Armidale Class Patrol Boat 3D Interactive Walkthrough

12:02
Invenio Engineering Solutions and Navy Engineering Division are helping to define the delivery of scenario-based training on-board Armidale Class Patrol Boats (ACPB) for the Royal Australian Navy, using Invenio's REFINE concept. REFINE -- an acronym for Real time Engineering Fleet-training Interactive Naval Environment has been developed by Invenio using Dassault Systemes' software. http://refine.invenio.com.au This unique interactive training capability resulted in Invenio's appointment to develop a 3D interactive model of the Royal Australian Navy's Armidale Class Patrol Boat. Used initially to demonstrate the benefits of this technology, the ACPB 3D Interactive Model can be used as a baseline platform to deliver online induction training, with the option to extend to REFINE's full capabilities. Dassault Systemes' 3DVIA Studio, a triple-A rated game engine was chosen for this project specifically for its ability to directly import CAD geometry, both in the file-neutral STEP format and natively from Dassault Systemes' CATIA 3D CAD platform. In a typical game development workflow, 3D CAD data is too detailed and "heavy" to import directly into a game engine, requiring the data to be completely re-modelled into optimised polygons. As the inevitable engineering design changes arise at the source 3D CAD level, the optimised polygon re-modelling process needs to be repeated to incorporate those changes. This is a manual process, adding a substantial resource effort to a project and ultimately increasing the time and cost of delivery. With 3DVIA Studio, the remodelling of CAD data into optimised polygons is automated and efficient, completed in the export process which removes a large component of development time and cost from the project. Adding value, any changes to the source 3D CAD data can be automatically propagated to the 3DVIA Studio project and any subsequent interactivity contained within. Also, through the development and delivery of a 3DVIA Studio project, the customer not only receives immersive interactive content, it also receives a maintained engineering 3D CAD model.

Arsenic Contamination of Ground Water -- The Greatest Environmental Disaster of this Century

08:26
The first "West Bengal Peoples' Summit on Environment" was organised by Sabuj Muncha at Academy of Fine Arts Hall in Kolkata on 11th August 2012, where many issues related to our fragile environment and the continued inaction on the part of authority and indifferences to protect the environmental activists from the threats of groups with vested interest against environmental protection were discussed. The issues related to arsenic poisoning from drinking arsenic contaminated ground water were also discussed. More than 138 lakhs of peoples are at high risk of cancer and other related diseases from arsenic poisoning in 111 blocks of 12 district of West Bengal . Total population of severally arsenic affected 9 districts is 504 lakks and new areas are coming under contamination slowly. As depending on the degree of contamination , the manifestation of arsenic poisoning takes less than 7 to 8 years in case of sick & malnutritioned people and may take even 14 years in case healthy & nutritioned people , nearly 2 lakhs people so far diagnosed for arsenic related skin manifestation / cancer is only a tip of iceberg of this disaster. During the summit the representatives of the Sabuj Muncha were interviewed on the issue by ETV Bangla and 1st part of their documentation specially on Kolkata region were repeatedly telecasted on 26th and 27th August 2012. This should be the eye opener for population in Kolkata .
