Cosmic Journeys - Earth in 1000 Years

31:13
This SpaceRip video is brought to you by MagellanTV https://magellan.tv/spacerip This edition of COSMIC JOURNEYS explores the still unfolding story of Earth's past and the light it sheds on the science of climate change today. While that story can tell us about the mechanisms that can shape our climate. it's still the unique conditions of our time that will determine sea levels, ice coverage, and temperatures. Ice, in its varied forms, covers as much as 16% of Earth's surface, including 33% of land areas at the height of the northern winter. Glaciers, sea ice, permafrost, ice sheets and snow play an important role in Earth's climate. They reflect energy back to space, shape ocean currents, and spawn weather patterns. But there are signs that Earth's great stores of ice are beginning to melt. To find out where Earth might be headed, scientists are drilling down into the ice, and scouring ancient sea beds, for evidence of past climate change. What are they learning about the fate of our planet... a thousand years into the future and even beyond? 30,000 years ago, Earth began a relentless descent into winter. Glaciers pushed into what were temperate zones. Ice spread beyond polar seas. New layers of ice accumulated on the vast frozen plateau of Greenland. At three kilometers thick, Greenland's ice sheet is a monumental formation built over successive ice ages and millions of years. It's so heavy that it has pushed much of the island down below sea level. And yet, today, scientists have begun to wonder how resilient this ice sheet really is. Average global temperatures have risen about one degree Celsius since the industrial revolution. They could go up another degree by the end of this century. If Greenland's ice sheet were to melt, sea levels would rise by over seven meters. That would destroy or threaten the homes and livelihoods of up to a quarter of the world's population. With so much at stake, scientists are monitoring Earth's frozen zones... with satellites, radar flights, and expeditions to drill deep into ice sheets. And they are reconstructing past climates, looking for clues to where Earth might now be headed... not just centuries, but thousands of years in the future. Periods of melting and freezing, it turns out, are central events in our planet's history. That's been born out by evidence ranging from geological traces of past sea levels... the distribution of fossils... chemical traces that correspond to ocean temperatures, and more. Going back over two billion years, earth has experienced five major glacial or ice ages. The first, called the Huronian, has been linked to the rise of photosynthesis in primitive organisms. They began to take in carbon dioxide, an important greenhouse gas. That decreased the amount of solar energy trapped by the atmosphere, sending Earth into a deep freeze. The second major ice age began 580 million years ago. It was so severe, it's often referred to as "snowball earth." The Andean-Saharan and the Karoo ice ages began 460 and 360 million years ago. Finally, there's the Quaternary... from 2.6 million years ago to the present. Periods of cooling and warming have been spurred by a range of interlocking factors: the movement of continents, patterns of ocean circulation, volcanic events, the evolution of plants and animals. The world as we know it was beginning to take shape in the period from 90 to 50 million years ago. The continents were moving toward their present positions. The Americas separated from Europe and Africa. India headed toward a merger with Asia. The world was getting warmer. Temperatures spiked roughly 55 million years ago, going up about 5 degrees Celsius in just a few thousand years. CO2 levels rose to about 1000 parts per million compared to 280 in pre-industrial times, and 390 today. But the stage was set for a major cool down. The configuration of landmasses had cut the Arctic off from the wider oceans. That allowed a layer of fresh water to settle over it, and a sea plant called Azolla to spread widely. In a year, it can soak up as much as 6 tons of CO2 per acre. Plowing into Asia, the Indian subcontinent caused the mighty Himalayan Mountains to rise up. In a process called weathering, rainfall interacting with exposed rock began to draw more CO2 from the atmosphere... washing it into the sea. Temperatures steadily dropped. By around 33 million years ago, South America had separated from Antarctica. An ice sheet formed. In time, with temperatures and CO2 levels continuing to fall, the door was open for a more subtle climate driver. It was first described by the 19th century Serbian scientist, Milutin Milankovic. He saw that periodic variations in Earth's rotational motion altered the amount of solar radiation striking the poles. In combination, every 100,000 years or so, these variations have sent earth into a period of cool temperatures and spreading ice.

25 WORST Architecture Fails You Have To See To Believe

10:17
You will not believe the architecture fails found around the world. These architecture fails are classic examples of how NOT to design a building. These are 25 biggest architecture fails you’ll ever see. Some of the architecture fails you are about to see are simple oversights. But these simple oversights create some of the bizarre buildings. See our full list of biggest architecture fails (and our photo credits and sources) and be sure to leave a comment on the video to let us know of other architecture fails we might have missed: http://list25.com/25-biggest-architecture-fails-youll-ever-see/ Did you enjoy our video on architecture fails? Now we’re not saying these buildings are ugly (not all of them anyways) but the architects might have missed something while trying to design them. Take the leaning tower of Pisa. It was built on soft marshy land which is why today it leans. Then there’s the secret intelligence service building which is not secretive at all. Oh, and let’s not forget about the Walt Disney Concert Hall which was built with shiny metal plates. The problem with this design is that the plates would catch the sun, magnify its rays, and reflect it to poor bystanders. These are a few examples of some of the architecture fails found on today’s video. Check out our video to learn about the Ray and Maria Stata Center, W.E.B. Du Bois Library, the Longaberger Company’s home office, the Grand Lisboa hotel, and others. Get ready because these are 25 biggest architecture fails you’ll ever see. What's hidden under the Greenland ice sheet? | Kristin Poinar

09:02
The Greenland ice sheet is massive, mysterious -- and melting. Using advanced technology, scientists are revealing its secrets for the first time, and what they've found is amazing: hidden under the ice sheet is a vast aquifer that holds a Lake Tahoe-sized volume of water from the summer melt. Does this water stay there, or does it find its way out to the ocean and contribute to global sea level rise? Join glaciologist Kristin Poinar for a trip to this frozen, forgotten land to find out. 16 Incredible Maps That Look Different Than You Think

06:19
Geography is often wrongly associated with boring maps and old facts about the world. However, it always depends on how it’s taught – and today, we’re going to make it more fun. Here're 16 amazing maps that will change your perspective of the world forever (at least, you won’t feel bored looking at them!) Other videos you might like: 12 Strange US Geography Facts No One Told You About https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJvZJpQ2jfA& 10 Smallest Countries You Never Knew Existed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHaXOzVyHzI& 15 Dramatic Changes on Earth Revealed by NASA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7txs0SPaJw& TIMESTAMPS: The real size of Greenland 0:30 What if Australia was at the same latitude as Russia and Europe 1:06 The right size of Mexico 1:49 Antarctica 2:12 Now, let’s see what the real size of Russia is 2:40 Alaska 3:10 China and India 3:31 Africa 4:08 The six largest countries along the equator 5:00 Bonus 5:37 SUMMARY: - Let’s take a look at Greenland. It’s a huge country, right? However, when we shift its position to the same latitude of the USA, it’s clear that Greenland is nowhere near as big as we thought! - Look at how the shape of Australia has changed when it’s moved to the north. It’s now within the Arctic Circle, much closer to the pole, so it becomes stretched. - We used to think that Mexico isn’t that big, but let’s move it to the north. Now, what do you see? It seems that Mexico is quite a large country! - Russia is not only the largest country in the world but also the most northerly. But when we move Russia to the equator, we can see that it’s actually two to three times smaller. - Let’s take a closer look at Alaska and how its size gradually changes as it’s moved towards the equator. It’s becoming smaller, smaller, and even smaller. - All of the countries on the African continent look quite small in their normal positions, right? That’s because they’re located at or close to the equator. What Would Happen If All Ice On Earth Melted?

What Would Happen If All Ice On Earth Melted? ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/r5jd1F Many people have wondered what would happen if all the glacial ice on the planet melted. Some believe that it would be a water world with no land in sight, while others think that could never happen. But the Earth is changing in more ways than you might think on its own. Many might wonder how much of the Earth’s current global warming trend is affected by humans. Regardless of who is to blame, whether the planet is just going through a natural phase in its evolution, or if we are responsible, the evidence shows that the planet is getting warmer and warmer every year. But just how much of the planet could end up covered in water if all the glacial ice melted? We hope you enjoyed the video. Do you have an idea on how we could stop global warming? Let us know in the comments. If you enjoyed watching this video, then make sure to like, subscribe, and turn on notifications so you’ll be the first to know when a new episode arrives. 5 "Impossible" Things That Can Happen On Other Planets

07:24
A lot of things happen on Earth, but there are still some things that just don't ever happen here. But, that doesn't mean that what's impossible here is impossible everywhere else in the universe. Whether it's clouds that rain rocks or glass, wind that's 29 times faster than sound, having 2 shadows or even being able to fly in some places, this is a collection of some of the most ridiculous places that we know of so far in our strange universe. This video was done in a collaboration with Second Thought, and you can check out his video here! If you're curious about flying on Titan and the research into that, I've attached a paper written by the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Leicester dated October 22nd 2013 which goes into a lot more detail than I could afford. Naked Science - Colliding Continents

50:13
Subscribe to Naked Science - http://goo.gl/wpc2Q1 Every other Wednesday we present a new video, so join us to see the truth laid bare... How were the continents formed? We walk over them without a second thought, but where did the land beneath our feet come from? We go back in time to the oldest rocks on earth, to see how the first continents formed on our fledgling planet. We see how continents are just lighter rocks, floating on a layer of denser molten rock, the mantle. Travelling to the bottom of the Grand Canyon we follow the process of erosion and sedimentation that created the landscape we see today. At the Giant’s Causeway, in Ireland, we tell the story of how a continent split into two, creating America and Europe, and in the Himalayas, we see how two continents colliding create the tallest mountains on earth. But what of the future? Using computer simulations, we trace the progress of the continents over the next 250 million years and discover that they will all merge into one.

The Most Complex International Borders in the World

11:54
In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites. I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland. I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh. This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!) I finish off the video by looking at the island of Cyprus, which may look like a borderless island, but is in fact far from it! **COPYRIGHT INFORMATION** *IMAGES* All images used are: public domain; licensed under Creative Commons with attribution; or used with permission. How much longer will the moderate climate that we’ve come to know as “normal” continue? What causes these dramatic shifts in temperature that thaw our planet and then throw it back into a state of deep freeze? How Earth Would Look If All The Ice Melted

02:45
We learned last year that many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century. As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities. What if the Mongol Empire Reunited Today?

05:48
The Mongol Empire at it's height took up 16% of all the land on Earth and controlled 1 out of every 4 people on the planet, a 13th century superpower. It's presence was very brief compared to other empires, but what if the Mongol Empire was suddenly recreated today with the same borders they had at their apex? This video attempts to answer that question using data analysis and statistics from readily available information and data. Music is The Wasteland by Ross Bugden. World war 2 Top 10 Fighter Planes (Videos)

22:42
World War II featured fighter combat on a larger scale than any other conflict to date. German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel noted the effect of airpower: "Anyone who has to fight, even with the most modern weapons, against an enemy in complete command of the air, fights like a savage against modern European troops, under the same handicaps and with the same chances of success." Throughout the war, fighters performed their conventional role in establishing air superiority through combat with other fighters and through bomber interception, and also often performed roles such as tactical air support and reconnaissance. Fighter design varied widely among combatants. The Japanese and Italians favored lightly armed and armored but highly maneuverable designs such as the Japanese Nakajima Ki-27, Nakajima Ki-43 and Mitsubishi A6M Zero and Italy's Fiat G.50 and Macchi MC.200. In contrast, designers in Great Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, and the United States believed that the increased speed of fighter aircraft would create g-forces unbearable to pilots who attempted maneuvering dogfights typical of the First World War, and their fighters were instead optimized for speed and firepower. In practice, while light, highly maneuverable aircraft did possess some advantages in fighter-versus-fighter combat, those could usually be overcome by sound tactical doctrine, and the design approach of the Italians and Japanese made their fighters ill-suited as interceptors or attack aircraft.During the invasion of Poland and the Battle of France, Luftwaffe fighters—primarily the Messerschmitt Bf 109—held air superiority, and the Luftwaffe played a major role in German victories in these campaigns. During the Battle of Britain, however, British Hurricanes and Spitfires proved roughly equal to Luftwaffe fighters. Additionally Britain's use of radar and the advantages of fighting above Britain's home territory allowed the RAF to deny Germany air superiority, saving Britain from possible German invasion and dealing the Axis a major defeat early in the Second World War.On the Eastern Front, Soviet fighter forces were overwhelmed during the opening phases of Operation Barbarossa. This was a result of the tactical surprise at the outset of the campaign, the leadership vacuum within the Soviet military left by the Great Purge, and the general inferiority of Soviet designs at the time, such as the obsolescent I-15 biplane and the I-16. More modern Soviet designs, including the MiG-3, LaGG-3 and Yak-1, had not yet arrived in numbers and in any case were still inferior to the Messerschmitt Bf 109. As a result, during the early months of these campaigns, Axis air forces destroyed large numbers of Red Air Force aircraft on the ground and in one-sided dogfights. In the later stages on the Eastern Front, Soviet training and leadership improved, as did their equipment. Late-war Soviet designs such as the Yakovlev Yak-3 and Lavochkin La-7 had performance comparable to the German Bf-109 and Focke-Wulf Fw 190. Also, significant numbers of British, and later U.S., fighter aircraft were supplied to aid the Soviet war effort as part of Lend-Lease, with the Bell P-39 Airacobra proving particularly effective in the lower-altitude combat typical of the Eastern Front. The Soviets were also helped indirectly by the American and British bombing campaigns, which forced the Luftwaffe to shift many of its fighters away from the Eastern Front in defense against these raids. The Soviets increasingly were able to challenge the Luftwaffe, and while the Luftwaffe maintained a qualitative edge over the Red Air Force for much of the war, the increasing numbers and efficacy of the Soviet Air Force were critical to the Red Army's efforts at turning back and eventually annihilating the Wehrmacht. Meanwhile, air combat on the Western Front had a much different character. Much of this combat was centered around the strategic bombing campaigns of the RAF and the USAAF. Axis fighter aircraft focused on defending against Allied bombers while Allied fighters' main role was as bomber escorts. The RAF raided German cities at night, and both sides developed radar-equipped night fighters for these battles. The Americans, in contrast, flew daylight bombing raids into Germany. Unescorted Consolidated B-24 Liberators and Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers, however, proved unable to fend off German interceptors (primarily Bf-109s and FW-190s). With the later arrival of long range fighters, particularly the North American P-51 Mustang, American fighters were able to escort daylight raids far into Germany and establish control of the skies over Western Europe.

For the most part it will probably be water. Apparently you can't get Big Macs everywhere. This map shows the countries that have McDonalds in red This time the countries in red drive on the right side of the road The countries in white are the ones that England has never invaded. There are only 22 of them These were all of the world's internet connections in 1969 And these are all the countries that heavily restrict internet access today These countries were all communist at one point in time These are the countries that don't use the metric system This is a map of where google street view is available These are all the landlocked nations of the world And this is what the world would look like if all the countries with coastlines sank This is a map of the all the rivers in the United States And these are all the rivers that feed into the Mississippi River This is a rather depressing map of the highest paid public employees in the United States And this is the United States on the moon This is the longest straight line you can sail. It goes from Pakistan all the way to Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia for a total of 20000 miles This is a map of 19th century shipping lanes that outlines the continents This map shows every country that has ever operated an aircraft carrier This map highlights the countries with the most skyscrapers in red and orange This map shows the world's largest donors of foreign aid These are all of the most photographed places in the world And this is all the places where you can get eaten by a Great White Shark

Top 25 Poorest Countries in the World | List 25

29:10
These countries share some common traits | List 25 The global economy is increasingly complicated and competitive. Countries are compelled to use whatever tools they have at their disposal to promote growth, attract business, and protect their economic interests. The international playing field is not level, however, and a number of unique disadvantages have made wealth creation and economic development nearly impossible in some parts of the world. The poorest countries in the world, regardless of continent or hemisphere, often share some common traits. In several cases, they were under European colonial control and only gained independence sometime in the last century. Many of the poorest countries have also recently been devastated by civil war or natural disasters. Poor populations are also often hamstrung by political corruption and instability, as well as inadequate infrastructure and public services. Lacking the stability, and resources necessary to develop well-rounded, valuable economies of innovation, the poorest countries in the world tend to be heavily dependent on agriculture -- both for subsistence and international trade. Further, the lack of economic activity in many of these countries has significant implications for public health and life expectancy. 24/7 Wall St. reviewed World Bank data on gross national income per capita based on purchasing power parity, or GNI per capita PPP, by country to identify the poorest countries in the world. This measure is commonly used to approximate average annual income. For reference, GNI per capita PPP in the United States is $54,151. In every country on this list, GNI per capita is below $3,000. Stay tuned to see top 25 poorest countries in the world. Please leave your comments or feel free to discuss in the comments section. Your feedback will be appreciated. Thanks for watching!! Like!
