What's hidden under the Greenland ice sheet? | Kristin Poinar

09:02
The Greenland ice sheet is massive, mysterious -- and melting. Using advanced technology, scientists are revealing its secrets for the first time, and what they've found is amazing: hidden under the ice sheet is a vast aquifer that holds a Lake Tahoe-sized volume of water from the summer melt. Does this water stay there, or does it find its way out to the ocean and contribute to global sea level rise? Join glaciologist Kristin Poinar for a trip to this frozen, forgotten land to find out. 14 Amazing Facts National Geographic Has Shared With Us

10:39
Humans may know a lot about the world, but there are still many questions that remain unanswered. What do the tops of the pyramids in Egypt look like? Can the Sahara Desert turn into a lush, green forest? Can an avocado kill a horse? Why is penguin poop necessary for survival? National Geographic has provided answers to your most burning questions. You can’t even imagine some of the things you don’t know about the world! After watching this video, you’ll be able to impress all your friends with these unbelievable facts. TIMESTAMPS: What sits atop the ancient Egyptian pyramids? 0:57 That’s a canary of a different color! 1:49 The Vatican prohibited copies of a special song 2:26 Crisscross patterns in the sea 3:25 Someone broke the beard off an ancient Egyptian mask artifact in a museum 3:51 Orchids are “Devil’s Plants” 4:35 A colorless rainbow 5:10 Is GPS really free? 5:49 You can move from city to city in Russia without changing homes! 6:15 Penguin poop is necessary for survival 6:45 Avocados are toxic to everyone but humans 7:18 Iceland cooks bread with the help of volcanoes 7:55 Ice balls aren’t a myth! 8:33 The Sahara isn’t always a hot desert 9:10 #nationalgeographic #unbelievablefacts #geographicalfacts Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Scientists discovered the Benben stone, which once sat atop the pyramid of Amenemhat III, around 1840 BCE in the Temple of Phoenix. In Egypt, the phoenix was thought to be able to create and resurrect. - Thanks to a special pigment in canary wings, they can change shades depending on what they eat. - Vatican doesn’t have a theme song, it did have a special piece that was performed once a year, which was kept secret for nearly 150 years. - The square shapes that appear in the ocean are known as “cross sea.” It happens when 2 wave systems occur in the ocean at oblique, or slanting, angles. - Back in 2014, an employee at the Egyptian Museum knocked off the beard of Tutankhamun’s burial mask! They tried to glue it back on, which did more harm than good to the artifact. - The flower from the forests of Colombia got the nickname of “Devil’s Orchid” thanks to its creepy appearance of a face with horns and red eyes in its middle. - The fog bow is a rare phenomenon that makes an appearance on foggy days, hence the name. - You may not pay to use GPS on your phone when you’re looking for the nearest Starbucks, but the US government spends $750 million a year to maintain the 24 satellites it uses! - Something as gross as penguin poop is crucial to maintaining Antarctica’s ecosystem! - Dogs and other animals like horses and cows can get very sick and even die from ingesting parts of avocados. - While most of us use ovens to cook delicious bread, Iceland uses what’s readily available to them: volcano heat! - While incredibly rare, natural ice balls actually exist! They look like perfect balls that only a human could manufacture, but these balls are formed by the wind. - According to Robert Korty, a researcher at Texas A&M University, the Sahara was tropical some 6,000 years ago! How the World Map Looks Wildly Different Than You Think

06:20
All of us have seen a world map at some point in our lives before, but it is very difficult to imagine how certain countries and parts of the world compare to each other in size that are far apart. In this video, I explore why the world looks very different than how it is portrayed in the Mercator Projection map. I then go on to explore how certain countries are unexpectedly larger or smaller than what they appear to be, and how some places looks wildly different than our perceptions. PS; Don't totally hate on the Mercator Projection, it's actually a really useful map for navigation and on keeping the correct shape of countries while sacrificing the size that we can all laugh about! Music is by Ross Bugden. He makes excellent music, please check out his channel! The Most Complex International Borders in the World

11:54
In this video I look at some of the most complex international border. Of course, there are more complex borders in the world, but this video looks at some of my favourites. I look at the 3 enclaves countries of the world: Vatican City, San Marino and Lesotho. As well as Campione d'Italia, an Italian exclave which is an enclave of Switzerland. I then take things up a notch and look at enclaves within enclaves. The town of Baarle which is in the Netherlands and Belgium is an incredibly complicated border. But not quite as much as the Cooch Behar region of India and Bangladesh. This is followed by a look at the odd situation of Bir Tawil, the only unclaimed land on Earth outside of Antarctica (which is itself a place for complex borders!) I finish off the video by looking at the island of Cyprus, which may look like a borderless island, but is in fact far from it! **COPYRIGHT INFORMATION** *IMAGES* All images used are: public domain; licensed under Creative Commons with attribution; or used with permission. What causes these dramatic shifts in temperature that thaw our planet and then throw it back into a state of deep freeze? What Would Happen If All Ice On Earth Melted?

11:41
What Would Happen If All Ice On Earth Melted? ► Subscribe: https://goo.gl/r5jd1F Many people have wondered what would happen if all the glacial ice on the planet melted. Some believe that it would be a water world with no land in sight, while others think that could never happen. But the Earth is changing in more ways than you might think on its own. Many might wonder how much of the Earth’s current global warming trend is affected by humans. Regardless of who is to blame, whether the planet is just going through a natural phase in its evolution, or if we are responsible, the evidence shows that the planet is getting warmer and warmer every year. But just how much of the planet could end up covered in water if all the glacial ice melted? The Arctic isn’t the same as it was today as it was, say… 100 years ago. Temperatures there have been rising at twice the normal rate which has been sparking some very alarming changes unlike anything seen in recorded history. 87% OF Antarctica Peninsula Glaciers have melted since 1945. Now the regions sea ice is declining by 13% percent each decade. Scientific predictions that foresaw an ice-free Arctic Ocean during the summer between 2040 and 2050 may come to pass even sooner than we thought. A lot of people will think ‘well that’s no big deal… just get everyone to move to higher ground’. Sounds like a simple solution. However, aside from the fact that billions of people would be displaced, there would be more to worry about now that all the Arctic ice has melted. What is not commonly known is that the Earths’ poles not only get less direct sunlight than lower latitudes, but the sea ice is white, and therefore reflects most of the sunlight that hits it back out into space. That reflectivity called ‘albedo’ helps keep the poles cold and limits the heat absorption from the Sun. But that’s not all. Scientists have known for a long time that the Arctic tundra and marine sediments contain large frozen deposits of methane gas which, if released into the atmosphere, will increase greenhouse gases. So as the Arctic Sea ice melts, this source of methane will increase. Think runaway greenhouse effect which likely helped destroy the atmosphere on Mars along with the solar winds that stripped the planet of its atmosphere. But that’s not all. During this time there could be massive Earthquakes if the ice melted fast enough. One of the more uncommonly known things is that all that ice has some serious weight and suppression to it, and it has been holding down the Earth, and global warming has already bled the frigid continent of about 2.7 trillion tons of ice with over half those losses occurring in the last 5 years. Most climate scientists agree the main cause of the current global warming trend is human expansion of the greenhouse effect… warming that results when the atmosphere traps heat radiating from Earth toward space. Some of the things you can do are to buy anything reusable and be conscious of garbage and waste and try to recycle everything. Saving gas by walking more or taking the bus can help, as well as planting trees. But it takes more than just a handful of people to make a change, it takes everyone to make an impact. Perhaps humanity will embrace this global threat on our planet and governments will act fast enough to possibly reverse the damage. And for those people who procrastinate, the time for action is now…because we just may have an ally in our own Sun… We hope you enjoyed the video. Do you have an idea on how we could stop global warming? Let us know in the comments. WHAT IF WE STILL LIVED ON SINGLE SUPERCONTINENT?

07:04
Subscribe! Because SMART IS THE NEW SEXY: https://goo.gl/JTfP6L Once upon a time, from about 300 million to 200 million years ago, there was a supercontinent called Pangea. In other words, all the land in the world was one giant supercontinent surrounded by the ocean. But 175 million years ago, this continent started to break down, eventually forming the seven continents we have today. The continents have since "drifted" apart because of the movements of the Earth's crust, known as plate tectonics. Some continents have maintained their puzzle piece-like shapes: Look at how eastern South America tucks into western Africa. But what would the world look like now if that split had never happened? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: http://facebook.com/enjoy.science/ The Bright Side of Youtube: https://goo.gl/rQTJZz 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

How Earth Would Look If All The Ice Melted

02:45
We learned last year that many of the effects of climate change are irreversible. Sea levels have been rising at a greater rate year after year, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change estimates they could rise by another meter or more by the end of this century. As National Geographic showed us in 2013, sea levels would rise by 216 feet if all the land ice on the planet were to melt. This would dramatically reshape the continents and drown many of the world's major cities. What if Scandinavia United? How Powerful Would It Be?

06:08
What if Scandinavia (Norway, Denmark & Sweden) united into United Scandinavia? What would their economy be like? Would it be one of the most powerful countries? What exactly is Scandinavia? The countries of Scandinavia are Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. We might also refer to the Scandinavian Peninsula, or Fennoscandia, which also comprises Finland and parts of Russia. Moreover, we talk about Nordic countries, and these include Iceland, Greenland and Faroe Islands. But today we are talking about three countries alone, and they are Sweden, Denmark and Norway. The countries have similar customs and cultures, and the languages are not far apart. The EU tells us the citizens of all these countries will likely be able to read each other’s language, although Swedes and Norwegians can have trouble understanding spoken Danish, even though the Danish and Norwegian languages are the most similar. Now, let’s look at what would happen if those countries finally came together, in this episode of the Infographics Show, What if Scandinavia United? 240 million years ago to 250 million years in the future

12:25
This animation shows the plate tectonic evolution of the Earth from the time of Pangea, 240 million years ago, to the formation of Pangea Proxima, 250 million years in the future. The animation starts with the modern world then winds it way back to 240 million years ago (Triassic). The animation then reverses direction, allowing us to see how Pangea rifted apart to form the modern continents and ocean basins. When the animation arrives back at the present-day, it continues for another 250 million years until the formation of the next Pangea, "Pangea Proxima". This question often come up. " Why dont you show East Africa rifting away from the rest of Africa?". Here's why: - Often, oceans open around a three-armed rift system called a “triple junction”. Only two arms of a triple junction open to form ocean basins. . In the case of East Africa, the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are the two successful rifts. The East African rift sytem, starting at the Afar Triangle, in Ethiopiais an aulacogen or “failed arm” of a triple junction The East African rift system is a failed rift, much like the Benue Trough in the South Atlantic or the Labrador Sea in the North Atlantic. - Let’s step back and ask the question, “What caused the rifting of the Red Sea , Gulf of Aden and East Africa in the first place? Though the Afar hotspot certainly helped to weaken the lithosphere, The driving force that caused the rifting was the subduction (beneath Eurasia , i.e., Iran) of oceanic crust attached to the northern margin of Arabia. (There was ocean an ocean between Arabian and Iran.) This subducting slab “pulled” Arabia northward tearing it away from Africa. This subduction zone has been completely destroyed by the collision of Arabia and Eurasia (Zagros Mountains). Consequently, there is no longer any “plate tectonic forces” acting on the African rifts and they will not continue to open. - Also, if we look at the plate tectonic neighborhood of East Africa, we see that the dominant motion of plates in the western Indian Ocean is N-S, rather than E-W . In fact, a new subduction zone is just beginning in the central Indian Ocean (a zone of diffuse earthquakes ~ 5-10 S) that will continue to pull Australia and Antarctica northward towards Asia. In other words, there is no room for East Africa to expand towards the east. Rather the east coast of Madagascar will become a strike-slip margin accommodating the continued, northward movement of the Australian-Antarctic plate. I hope this explanation is helpful. Of course all of this is scientific speculation, we will have to wait and see what happens, but this is my projection based on my understanding of the forces that drive plate motions and the history of past plate motions. Remember: “The past reveals patterns; Patterns inform process; Process permits prediction.” Notice how the areas of green (land), brown (mountains), dark blue (deep sea), and light blue (shallow seas on continents), changes throughout time. These changes are the result of mountain-building, erosion, and the rise and fall of sea level throughout time. The white patches near the pole are the expanding and contracting polar icecaps. The first part of the animation is a global view. The second part of the animation is a closeup view. This animation contains original music by C.R. Scotese, as well as an "easter egg" at the end. Yet more complex international borders in this sequel. In this video I look at even more enclaves and exclaves: the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Then I move onto the Uzbekistan-Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan border. Then I look at the exclaves of Germany within Belgium, the disputed border between India, Pakistan, and China. Croatia has complex border with 2 of its neighbours - Serbia and Slovenia. I finish by looking at the minor border irregularity between Sweden and Finland. Get some Bombas socks for 20% off! http://bit.ly/2PZuQLg Code: PRACTICAL The job of finding enough water, making it safe to use, and then reliably distributing it to the system customers with almost no downtime is a monumental task that requires a lot of infrastructure. And, probably the most visible component of a public water system is the elevated storage tank, also known as a water tower.
