Agile Transformation Tips - Change Model | Part 1

16:20
What are the most important parts of an Agile transformation, and is your company focusing on the right parts? Watch Part 2: https://youtu.be/4xzHTF27Dog There are certain issues that you will always run into no matter which Agile transformation focus you have. Learn about Construx's approach to Agile transformations from Steve McConnell, the world renowned author of the software classic: Code Complete. The research presented in this video is based on Construx’s 10 year of experience helping companies with Agile transformations & 20 years of experience helping companies with software development transformations. Commonly the emphasis in an Agile Transformation is on the “Agile” part and there is little focus on the “transformation”. When companies focus on the details of “Agile” they often struggle or fail. The emphasis should be on on “transformation”. Agile is important, but it is not the make or break focus of an Agile Transformation. This video series focuses on the details of organizational change, inspired by Mary Lippitt and Tim Knoster. For change to succeed you need to have vision, consensus, skills, resources, incentives and an action plan. When you have these in place your Agile Transformation is more likely to succeed. Inspect and adapt applies to Agile Transformations as much as to Agile software projects. Agile Transformation Tips - Adoption Model | Part 2

16:49
More and more companies are going through an Agile transformation. This second part of our Agile transformation lecture series focuses on what is known as the adoption model. There is a common pattern that we see in Agile transformations. Steve McConnell, the highly regarded author of Code Complete and CEO of Construx, discusses how companies are commonly adopting Agile during their transformations. Why do pilot projects sometimes go so well, but taking the practices organization wide fail or struggle outright? The adoption model helps to explain this observation. Below is a common pattern we see when it comes to an Agile transformation. Step 1: Organization commits to the Agile Transformation Step 2: Initial pilot to transform to Agile is successful Step 3: Organization wants to expand the use of Agile Step 4: Second or third Agile project attempted but stumbles or fails Step 5: Agile transformation is abandoned The specific model we use is inspired by Everett Rogers and Geoffrey Moore. For any new practice (Agile transformations included) changes start with innovators who are highly risk tolerant. However, these innovators are not very representative of organizations at large. The adoption of Agile travels through the change adoption model from left (innovators) to right (laggards). The different groups have very different attributes and characteristics. The early adopters make an Agile transformation look easy, which isn’t necessarily a good thing, because Agile transformations are over generalized from this experience. Code Complete Essentials - Focussing on Interfaces

11:52
In this Code Complete course excerpt, Steve McConnell discusses the highly problematic differences when programming “through” vs. “to” the interface. Take a free trial of this course here: http://bit.ly/1nOx8um In modern programming languages, or currently popular programming languages, we don’t have good support for real encapsulation. Without encapsulation, abstraction breaks down. This introduces subtle semantic coupling between the client code and the implementation, which increases overall complexity. In the words of P.J. Plauger, “It ain’t abstract if you have to look at the underlying implementation to understand what’s going on.” This is really an issue, and the industry could pay a lot more attention to the abstractions that presented in the interfaces. Without abstraction, encapsulation breaks down. If the interface doesn’t tell how to use the class, a natural response is to read the implementation to learn how the class works. This is “business as usual” for most software projects. We as an industry need to do a much better job of creating interfaces that other programmers can actually use. Focus more on interfaces. Implementation affects code quality. Interfaces affect longevity, extendibility, ability to scale up a system, etc. For more information about Construx, visit http://www.construx.com

5 Keys to (Successful) Large Scale Scrum | Construx

12:55
What are some common pitfalls of implementing large scale scrum with SAFe, DAD, LeSS, Nexus, etc? Jenny Stuart, Vice President of Consulting at Construx software, gives you five keys for successful large scale scrum. Be sure to get our white-paper, Succeeding With Scrum at Scale: http://bit.ly/1plO9gu 1. Establish individual co-located teams. Dev team, product owner and scrum master should be in a single location. Try to minimize the communication issues both inter-team and intra-team by locating each scrum team (as much as possible) in a single geography. The structure becomes more rational and focus becomes on coordination between the teams not between and within the teams. 2. Create a product-level definition of done. What does it take to bring the overall product to a releasable state every sprint? Having the definition of done on a team level is not enough. 3. Address system architecture implications. Will an architecture simply emerge, no matter the size of the team? 150, 500 or 1000 people? That way lies disaster. You don’t need big design up front, but mind the architecture to prevent large scale issues. 4. Converge frequently. You want to be building a near releasable product and integrate the work of all scrum teams as often as possible, even at the story level. At a minimum the work of all the teams needs to be coming together inside of the sprint after you’ve completed the work. Convergence within the sprint is the most desirable. 5. Create product-level feedback loops. How do we know that we are actually building a near releasable quality product? We need to bring in place opportunities to look across all the work of the teams and do product reviews or demos. These should ideally happen the day after the sprint concludes. Scaling scrum is complex, minimizing these issues can make scaling much easier. Success does not come overnight, but reducing complexity and following these tips are one step to success. Are User Stories Requirements?

03:53
Are user stories requirements? Earl Beede, Construx Senior Fellow, gives two reasons why they are NOT requirements. 1. It's not a requirement because of the definition of requirement. Earl's definition? A requirement is: A decision that we impose on the implementation. 2. Requirements are very often in a context, there's a whole story to be told. The Definition of Done

15:37
How do you know when you are truly done on a software project? Watch this Brain Cast where Earl Beede discusses the definition of done. What does it mean on a software project to be done? We work on all kinds of things in projects: requirements, designs, testing, plans, stories, prototypes, specs. How do we know when we are done with this kind of stuff? You don't want to be overdone or underdone, this just causes frustration. We see lots of things that are overdone, and lots of things that are underdone when we look at real-life client cases. Our four criteria for good enough are: sufficiently complete, appropriate for the environment, sanity checks and feedback from stakeholders. This video will help you find the right level of "doneness". For more information about Construx, visit http://www.construx.com

Secrets of the Agile Scaling Gurus - Webinar with Steve McConnell

57:11
As small-team success becomes more commonplace with Scrum and Kanban, organizations are shifting their focus to succeeding with Agile development on large projects. Many organizations have tried SAFe, and others have experimented with Nexus/SoS, LeSS, DaD, and other approaches. Yet few organizations appear to be fully satisfied with any of their approaches. Why not? What are these organizations missing? In this presentation, award winning author Steve McConnell unpacks more than 20 years of experience guiding organizations as they transition from small projects to large. He explains the key principles underlying all successful scaling approaches. He identifies common scaling pitfalls. And he explains what is really different about scaling projects in Agile environments.

How to Choose an Agile Scaling Framework - Construx

50:12
Enterprises that adopt Agile development practices typically want to apply them to projects both large and small. The most proven Agile methodologies—Scrum in particular, along with its supporting practices—is fundamentally a small-team-level practice aimed at managing workflow for 5-9 people at a time. These Agile practices can be highly effective at the team level, but they do not address large project issues of geographically distributed teams, management, architecture, requirements, and other large project issues. This webinar introduces additional practices needed to succeed with Scrum on a large, geographically distributed team, including necessary coordination, communication, integration, and architecture.
